Aberdeen Proving Ground Campgrounds (Military FamCamp), Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This review is for the new Shore Park Travel Camp that opened in June 2016.

There are 24 back-in sites and 5 cabins (cabins are not open at this time) on the campground site. Some sites will only accommodate RV's up to 30'. Most sites look fairly easy to get level on, but there are a few that a big rig might find difficult. The layout is a little "hinky" - depending on which site you have you could be backing in on your "bad/blind" side.

Right now it is pretty exposed but a large number of trees have been planted between and behind sites. Frankly, there may be some issues in the future with the placement of these. Even with the current openness we were not able to get a signal for our satellite at all due to the large trees on one side of the park. FYI - we use a tripod mounted dish that allows us to pretty much place it wherever. There was another Class A that pulled in on our side and soon moved to another site because they couldn't get a signal with their roof-mounted dish. They do not want ANYTHING placed on the grass areas without written permission.

Since everything is brand new and there haven't been a number of people there, the bathhouse is in excellent condition with the exception of some bad starters on the lights. Didn't use the laundry but 2 washers and 2 dryers may not make it going forward.

Sites are all concrete and the road is blacktop helping to keep things cleaner. The sewer connection is raised about 9" off the ground. No cable or wifi. We did not have an issue with service on either our Verizon Jetpack or T-Mobile phone hotspot.

Pet owners: APG is an active testing base so you do hear the blasting/gunfire - usually in the mornings. Not deafening but it can shake your rig if the gun is big enough. We camped at Aberdeen Proving Ground Campgrounds (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

APG is not a huge active duty military base (mostly civilian/contractor). The PX is very small but good for basics. Commissary is as good as any chain grocery store. Class VI is in the shoppette and is adequate. Fitness center is great. Gets pretty quiet after 5pm.

Bar Harbor RV Park & Marina, Abingdon, Maryland

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $59.00
Overall Rating:

We have stayed at Bar Harbor for the past two summers. In 2015 it was for an extended (3 months) period and for 3 weeks in 2016. (We have family close by, hence the long stays.) We had the same electric issue during our 2016 stay as a poster here did in 2015. The area was experiencing extreme heat which caused the local power company (BG&E) to dial back power to its customers during peak periods. The result was that our EMS would cut all power to our 50 AMP coach. We toughed it out by raising our AC temp a bit and not running microwave, hairdryer, etc. during those times. Oddly it didn't happen in 2015. Some sites can be tight and close to neighbors. Some will flood during heavy rains. It is an older park, but they do maintain the bathhouse well and the staff is very friendly & accommodating.

It may seem pricey to some, but if you consider the proximity to Baltimore it is one of the best places we have found to stay. We paid a long-term rate in 2015 and a weekly rate in 2016 that were less than the daily rate. They will also discount if you pay in cash. It is a convenient location for anyone wanting to visit the Baltimore area with access to both I95 and more local roads to travel. Some nice restaurants close by as well as just about any shopping one might need including RV repair.

It is a combination marina and RV park so the weekends tend to get busy, but there has never been an issue with loud or obnoxious people. It can be "iffy" getting a signal for satellite television with all the tall trees. We use a tripod mounted dish and were able to make it work last year on a different site - no luck this year. They do have cable which was fine for our stay. We camped at Bar Harbor RV Park & Marina in a Motorhome.
