Waldo's Beach Recreation Area, Fayetteville, North Carolina

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

Was told no fishing or boating due to repairs on the dam. Was NOT told the lake was completely drained two years ago and there Is not a lake even there. Playground has three play items and the slide is so rusty it is unusable. Old buildings open and unlocked filled with trash and junk next to an unfenced playground - extreme safety hazard and dangerous for kids. Electrical cuts out during high use times in certain areas of the park. Cash only! Warning and red flag - cash only. Cats (several cats!) roam the park all the time. Roads need grading and gravel - rain ran like stream down the center of the main RV parking area road. RVs on outer edge literally back up to personal homes less than 10 feet away. Without the lake this park seems to have run down. Had to repair the park water line at the ground level before hooking up to the RV. No manager or office on site that we could find. It Could be very nice with some maintenance and the lake. Website is misleading at this point in time. We camped at Waldo's Beach Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Amana Colonies RV Park, Amana, Iowa

Date of Stay: October, 2015 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Went for 3 days to attend Oktoberfest. Made reservations online MONTHS in advance, yet were still put out in the back 40, grassy area, with maybe 10 feet between our door and the camper next to us (though the park was only 3/4 full). Twice in a row they have done this to us, though there were much roomier sites available. Opening our awning it was literally less than 2 feet from the neighbors slide out. (Last year we couldn't open our awning, no room). Trees are almost nonexistent in the RV parking area, and you have to drive around and find your own picnic table and fire ring as there aren't enough to go around. The cost of $32.00 didn't include online reservation fees - and was for electricity and water only ($35 includes sewer). Nothing to do at the campground itself - must go into town for activities. We camped at Amana Colonies RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Things to do - Amana is pretty cool, love it there. Winery's nearby. Outlet shopping in Williamsburg with a really nice winery just north of there.

Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site-Campground, Petersburg, Illinois

Date of Stay: September, 2015 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

The park is dated, could definitely use some updates - but then Illinois is broke so doubt they are putting $$ into their parks. We had issues with the 30 amp electrical. Illinois doesn't refund at state parks, so we were without power for two nights. The host was very helpful on day 3 and suggested plugging into a 50 amp with a 30 amp adapter - that worked! Something with the 30 amp ground. (Wonder if this is common at this park as two other RVs had the same problem.) We camped at Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site-Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

If you have RV problems, see the RV dealer on Highway 123 to the east of Petersburg. I don't remember the name of the place, but it's the only one there (little dive of a place with used RVs). This guy is amazing!! We have a few issues that had been stumping repairmen left and right for the last two years. He figured it out in less than 10 minutes and told us how to fix it ourselves. Two months prior we had paid $200 in Davenport Iowa for the RV shop there to tell us nothing was wrong!

Lincoln's historic site - fantastic! Lincoln's library in Springfield is one of the best in the country. Lots to do in the area. Love the historic site - walking distance from the park and it was great! Small restaurant at the historic site with to die for sweet-rolls. Lots to do in Springfield.

Galesburg East Campground, Knoxville, Illinois

Date of Stay: May, 2015 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Same as all the other good reviews - near interstate, no noise, near town, etc. It is also on a lake and there is a beach and water slide/pool on the far side of the lake (admission price included in camping fee). The grandchildren loved the beach. Sites are large with plenty of grass and space between rigs. However, the roads are very, very narrow. It was difficult to get in and out of our site. Luckily no one was behind us when we arrived so we drove around the loop and across that site, across the grass, and into our site. Getting out was more difficult. The site hosts were absolutely wonderful! Can't say enough about them - very helpful, friendly, actually out meeting and greeting the campers! Will go back again. We camped at Galesburg East Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Shopping/dining in Galesburg. Beach and lake activities - canoe/paddle boat rentals, water slide. Nice 40 min drive up to the Quad Cities (Moline/Rock Island, Illinois and Davenport/Bettendorf, Iowa). Lots to do in the Quad Cities - John Deere, River Boat Cruise/tour, Rock Island Arsenal Civil War cemetery, and more!

Palace Campgrounds, Galena, Illinois

Date of Stay: May, 2015 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

Not too thrilled with this campground - too crowded, pool is packed every day, trees in the way of the awning, etc. We chose to leave the park every single day as it was not relaxing at all. It's the only one near Galena, IL. However, next time we are heading back to Palisades State Park and will drive up to Galena for the day. Even though Palisades is bigger, it's much more roomy and not so noisy. We camped at Palace Campgrounds in a Fifth Wheel.
