Charlestown State Park, Charlestown, Indiana

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here with the intention of using it as a base to explore the Louisville area. Although the location is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Louisville, it was ideal for us. The campground was beautifully maintained and mowed. Roads are plenty wide and all paved. Town is a couple miles away with a grocery store and most everything you need. Our site faced northeast and if we come back we would request this site again. The patio was huge. We camped at Charlestown State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If you're interested in going on the Bourbon Trail, consider a tour package. We used Mint Julep Tours and visited 4 distilleries with a small group of 12. The tour left from downtown Louisville, included lunch and got back in plenty of time for us to drive back to the campground before the sun set.

If you need a propane bottle filled, you will need to travel at least 7 miles south of town or further. The only propane we could find in Charlestown is the exchange-type bottles.

Taps RV Park, Asheville, North Carolina

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

Closest park to town and its attractions. The owner is friendly, helpful and attentive to the guests and works very hard maintaining this older property. We had an outage on our power pole during our stay, and he had an electrician out to repair it promptly. Sites are a bit tight, but perfectly adequate for our big rig. We camped at Taps RV Park in a Motorhome.

Lake Powhatan Recreation Area, Asheville, North Carolina

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We got lucky here and got a full hookup site long enough for our rig, deep in the trees in a beautiful spot. The volunteers and hosts are helpful and friendly. Lots are spacious and mostly shady. Site surface was gravel and featured a fire ring. We camped at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Schoodic Woods Campground, Winter Harbor, Maine

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

This park is only 1 year old and we found it quite by accident last spring while trying to find a place to camp by Acadia NP. We think we had the absolute best spot (B6) as it was long, level and surrounded on both sides by tall trees. The Rangers and volunteers at the office are friendly and helpful, and we were able to buy a trail map of the peninsula for a nominal fee that allowed us to hike the area and enjoy this beautiful place. Sites are well maintained and campground is mostly quiet, except for the occasional barking dog. Bears are a concern here, so all cooking tools, including grills had to be stored inside overnight. This is the Maine we were looking for when we planned our first trip to New England. We camped at Schoodic Woods Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a free shuttle all over the peninsula with a stop at the campground, so you can hike or bike a ways then get picked up by the shuttle for a ride back. Bike paths and hiking trails abound.

Mt Desert Narrows Camping Resort, Bar Harbor, Maine

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $73.00
Overall Rating:

We were able to get mail delivered here, and received a call from the office when our package arrived. Staff is friendly and helpful. The office/store has a nice selection of gifts and menus from nearby restaurants. Our pull through spot was level and had some shade. Unfortunately the rocks around our site and the road necessitated us backing out instead of pulling right out. We are a bit long (43') so this is understandable. Water pressure was fair. We had a full hookup, although this campground has many more sites without sewer than with. Dump site can snarl traffic around checkout time. Pump out service is also available. This park also charged a $4.00/day "resort fee". Good location for visiting Acadia NP and Bar Harbor. Can't speak to cleanliness of restrooms, showers and laundry as we did not use. We did notice that fire pits were not cleaned out when campers left, so new arrivals get whatever was there before. We camped at Mt Desert Narrows Camping Resort in a Motorhome.
