Bay View State Park, Mount Vernon, Washington

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Navigating the somewhat narrow paved access roadways should pose no problems, even for larger rigs. However, many of the sites are laid out at 90 degrees, not diagonal, to the access roadways. I think the reservation website does a good job of noting what size rigs are and are not appropriate for each site. The water supply was very palatable; it was not excessively chlorinated. The staff did a really great job on keeping the restrooms clean. We liked the shower layout in the older restroom near Site 30 better than the shower layout in the newer restroom near Site 15. There are two faucets at the sinks. One faucet has warm tempered water. I "assume" the other one was cold water. As I was using the sink to wash my hands and face, I didn't try the cold side. : ) I expect the brushy areas have bugs in season, but there were none in July. We liked the open lawn playfield area in front of Sites 10 to 30. It would be less dreary in the winter than many of Sites 39 to 76, the back loop in the trees. Sites 1 through 30 have water and power. I believe that the rest are dry camping sites. We camped at Bay View State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

This is a small park. We enjoyed visiting many of the local attractions including bicycle trails, hiking trails, waterfronts, and small-town shopping districts. The picture I posted is of the very limited view of the Bay from the back of Site 30.

Longview North / Mount St Helens KOA, Castle Rock, Washington

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $63.00
Overall Rating:

The spaces are quite variable in size. Most are very closely spaced together. We stayed at the upper terrace in row "A" and had a bit more space than most sites do. Many of the smaller sites require parking a tow vehicle across the front of the trailer, or in the overflow parking area. The layout on a hill offers nice views of the forested valley below over the roofs of the other RVs in the park. The restrooms were very clean and they do a lot of mowing and maintenance work, so it's a well kept facility. We could hear some distant road noise but it didn't really bother us. The wifi performance was really quite impressive, though it slowed some when the place filled for the weekend. Overall, we liked the place well enough to consider staying here again. We camped at Longview North / Mount St Helens KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

We liked the Cascade Select Market grocery store 3.0 miles down the hill in Castle Rock. The town is rather charming and has a little 1.6 mile bike trail along the river which was enjoyable too.

Salt Creek Recreation Area, Port Angeles, Washington

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is just an excellent place to stay. The other reviews appear to cover most of the points I might have mentioned. The proximity to the water can make it a bit chilly when it's warmer inland. The dry spaces are among the trees and are somewhat more private, but are generally not very long. Some of them have views of the Strait. We stayed in sites 26 and 36. We picked site 26 so we could back in our trailer and view the Strait from our rear-dinette (the rear of sites 25 through 32 face the Strait). We picked site 36 for our last night because that's what was available, but it turned out to have a nice view of the Strait and the sunset through the trees. The reservation fee adds $10 to the nightly rates. The reservation site is pretty good in showing the mapping and informing you of the site length. If you pick "sewer" as an amenity, there will be no sites because none are actually sewered except for the host site. There is a dump station on the site exit roadway. The park is enjoyable and includes some amenities for kids. We camped at Salt Creek Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

We were very taken by the Makah Museum (Makah Cultural and Research Center). We like to treat ourselves to dinner at Michael's Seafood & Steakhouse in Port Angeles when we are up this direction.

Lincoln Rock State Park, East Wenatchee, Washington

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is a wonderful place in the best tradition of Columbia River hydroelectric project campgrounds, all of which seem to enjoy ample irrigation and have lavish green lawns that serve as an oasis in this dry climate. Sewer hookups are available at sites in Loop B, but not in Loop C where our site (91) was located. My primary quibble would be that the swimming area is something of a backwater located next to the boat ramp and the water consequently isn't as clean and fresh as I would prefer. The geese which populate the area don't help in this regard, which is why I downgraded the cleanliness score. Overall, the facilities are really terrific, and the bike trail to Wenatchee is wonderful. We camped at Lincoln Rock State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Cape Disappointment State Park, Ilwaco, Washington

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

We paid $208 for five nights with power and water, including an $8 reservation "fee". Unlike some of the other Washington State park facilities, this one has tempered (warm) water at the restroom sinks which I really like as we basically depend on the restrooms when travelling in our small trailer. They also have genuine glass mirrors which is much better than scuffed-up metal ones! We camped at Cape Disappointment State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

We especially enjoyed riding our bikes on the Discovery Trail, some 8 miles of asphalt-paved trail about 10-foot-wide. The trail offers wonderful views of the ocean, grassy dunes and forest groves. The trail has lots of ups and downs and sometimes tight corners that force you to slow down; we thought it was great fun. Additional to the towns and attractions on the Long Beach peninsula, there are many museums and attractions on the Oregon side. Astoria, OR is about half an hour from the campground.

Memaloose State Park, Mosier, Oregon

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

We enjoyed this park's location as a jumping off point to explore the area. The lawns were very poorly irrigated, though dust was not a major issue. Most of the lawns were dormant in late August.

The large yellow jackets and ground squirrel populations are nuisances.

I carefully picked a site based on an aerial photo to enjoy some afternoon shade; the tree turned out to be dead, though still standing.

The showers are free. The water in the showers and at the sinks is temperature-controlled warm water. They provide paper towels. We camped at Memaloose State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Boardman Marina Park, Boardman, Oregon

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

The spaces are large and level with large well-irrigated grassy areas surrounding. Some have little "privacy fences", while others are in the open. Some spaces are fully exposed to the sun while others enjoy shade from large trees.

The designated swim area beach was not terribly inviting; the shoreline was muddy and the water was murky. We swam to the west of the baseball diamond and the water was also murky there. There are many ducks hanging around; we showered right after the swim.

The WiFi is OK when the park clears out, then very poor when the park is full in the evenings.

The bathrooms are dated and generally adequately clean.

We spent three nights. We have no kids, no boat, and don't fish. Next time, we would use this park as a great place to stop for a night or two, but not as a resort destination to stay for a week. We camped at Boardman Marina Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

A nice medium-sized grocery store, Select Market, is located about 1/2 mile across the freeway at 220 S. Main Street. For some reason it was not on the Garmin GPS under "grocery stores", so we resorted to the old-fashioned method of asking someone where to find a grocery store. : )

Bay Center / Willapa Bay KOA, Bay Center, Washington

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $39.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed in our 13' teardrop trailer. Site 7 was suitable for a 30-footer. The park roads are gravel and appear to offer easy maneuvering for large rigs. We didn't see many sites that would offer much privacy. The restrooms and showers are outstanding. The hosts and staff are wonderful with kids and sponsor many activities for them; it would be a terrific destination for a young family. Cable is apparently limited to six channels and internet is through Tengo; both are included at no additional charge but I did not try either. We camped at Bay Center / Willapa Bay KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The park has a 600-foot trail to the saltwater beach which faces west for sunset viewing. There are several destinations within about an hour's radius. Raymond and South Bend about a half-hour to the northeast and have restaurants and small museums. Cape Disappointment State Park and Long Beach are respectively about 45-minutes and an hour to the southwest.
