Topsail Hill State Preserve, Santa Rosa Beach, Florida

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

This is our third stay at Topsail Hill. Absolutely LOVE this place. Every other place is just a campground. This is just an excellent place to stay. Kid friendly. Adult friendly. Bring a bicycle. Lots of trails. Bring a flashlight for night bicycle rides. They also have a tram to take you to the beach and back if you don't have a bicycle or don't want to walk. Several bathroom locations. Big bathhouse that is air conditioned. Big laundry room with several washers and dryers that work nicely. I don't have one bad thing to say about Topsail. Its a nice, relaxing place to stay. We camped at Topsail Hill State Preserve in a Travel Trailer.

Henderson Beach State Park, Destin, Florida

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed July 4. First time here. Probably my last time here.

Very clean campground in the heart of Destin. Short walk to the beach. Friendly staff at the front gate. Long line to get in, but didn't wait long. They kept the traffic moving. Nice concrete trails through some dense undergrowth. Was extremely hot at campsites because there are very few trees for shade. Wouldn't recommend tent campers for the hot months of the summer. There are several trees that are dead at campsites. These need to be taken care of. Not a very kid friendly place to stay. Nothing to do besides go to the beach. Campground Host between loop A & B was walking around at bath house drunk, carrying a beer in his hand. He was yelling at kids for parking their bikes at the bath house and showing them a sign that he told them said 'no bicycles allowed'. It actually said 'closed for cleaning'. Not only was he drunk, but apparently he was too drunk to read. I thought that this was an alcohol free campground. (At least the Campground Host should refrain from drinking while representing the State of Florida.

Good points: very clean and neat campground in a good location.

Bad points: little to no shade, dead trees that could cause big problems, no lighting at campsites, VERY dark at night. Rude and drunk Campground Host. Poor use of space. There is enough space at this campground for at least twice as many campsites which would equal more money for Florida State Parks. The underbrush is so thick that you can't see the campsite next to you. Good if you like EXTREME privacy. Dryers at laundry area at loop A & B do not dry clothes; don't waste your time or money. We did three cycles and the clothes were still wet.

If you are looking for an excellent campground that's only a few dollars more to stay at, go about 10 minutes down Hwy 98 to Topsail Hill Wildlife Preserve State Park. It's kid friendly and adult friendly. Maybe Topsail has us spoiled :-) We camped at Henderson Beach State Park in a Travel Trailer.
