Bass Harbor Campground, Bass Harbor, Maine

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

Bass Harbor is a nice getaway on southwest Mount Desert Island. Close to the ocean, it's cool and breezy and the humidity isn't bothersome. They are well-organized and offer a restful environment. Our space 326 is shaded by pitch pines, so you must wash the sap off car and trailer. The office lent us a honey wagon to empty our sewage, but there are plenty of spaces with sewer hookups. Kids have their own playground. Outside sinks helped BBQ wash-up. Showers are always hot. Trash and recycling available. So close to the ocean you can hear the fishing boats, fog horns and bells. Sites are grassy with good access and pretty level.

Staff are very friendly and keep the place in good shape. We had campfires every night in the rock-lined fire pits and cooked in the coals. The bugs weren't that bad since this place often has a breeze.

This campground doesn't refund early departures or rainouts and you must pay upfront, so plan ahead.

Watch out for traffic; the roads are filled with people and vehicles. Most roads are narrow, two lane, so drive carefully with trailers and RVs. We camped at Bass Harbor Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Mount Desert holds Acadia National Park. Visit Cadillac Mountain for easternmost U.S. sunrise. Bar Harbor shops. Visit Acadia National Park's many events and trails: Jordan Pond popovers. Many park trails are handicap accessible. Natural Seawall tidal pools. Thunder Hole gives exciting wave action with splash and boom. Lobster pounds, gourmet foodie shops, normal supermarkets. See Bass Harbor Light House and walk the trails.

Sleepy Hollow Lake Campground, Akron, New York

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

We only stayed overnight, but we certainly could have stayed longer. This is a very large gated campground with well over 200 RV sites plus cabins and tenting. They have scheduled activities mostly on Saturdays, fish fry and BINGO on Fridays. Owners are friendly and helpful. We camped at Sleepy Hollow Lake Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

This park has so many activities you wouldn't need to leave. But there are many local attractions too. See the llama at the petting zoo next to the gate. Look for turtles at the lake. There's a store at the check-in station.

Fossil Rock Recreation Area, Wilmington, Illinois

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is mostly a residential park with some residual camping sites and tent sites. There are many lakes in the area, which used to be coal mining pits and strip mines. The campground has a swimming pond and fishing ponds, although recent rains flooded the ponds. The water has a heavy concentration of hydrogen sulfide, probably from previous mining activities, so bring a water filter. Most residents buy their drinking water locally. This is a quiet, gated community and the residents are generally friendly. The park has many local activities. We camped at Fossil Rock Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Bishop Lake Campgrounds at Brighton State Recreation Area, Brighton, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

Nice view of the pond from our site. Birdwatchers will love this one. This camp has a country feel with sunny spots, mature trees, good amenities. Good pull-through site. Canadian geese like the pond and the grass. Cranes graced us on the second morning. We camped at Bishop Lake Campgrounds at Brighton State Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Bear Spring Mountain Campground, Downsville NY, Walton, New York

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

Go here for a quiet, primitive experience. We backed the trailer into site 14 on the Launt Pond site, which was level, paved with natural stones. It's very green and wooded in the hills of Upstate New York. The address is Downsville, NY, a pleasant little town. The other site at this campground is for equestrians who bring their own horses. Launt Pond is quite scenic and you can hike a considerable number of trails in the connected Bear Springs Wildlife Management Area. There are no pull-through sites and no hookups. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit and you can and must buy the local firewood to avoid carrying wood pests. The on-site ranger is eager to help and keeps the place clean and working. Even without hookups, we recommend it. We camped at Bear Spring Mountain Campground, Downsville NY in a Travel Trailer.

Indian Lake Travel Resort, Manistique, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Lake front on Indian Lake with sand beach and wading area. This is a typical RV park with side-by-side areas closely arranged. There's an extra charge for using air conditioning of $1.00/day. But this campground is at the northern tip of Lake Michigan, so it stays cool. We camped at Indian Lake Travel Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Town & Country RV Park and Campground, Savage, Minnesota

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

Towne and Country Campground, Savage MN. This is an RV and travel trailer campground, not really optimized for tenting, but there are several family tenters here. We stayed in sites 19, 23 and 74. Sites are close, but good foliage makes them seem more separated. Full amenities, very close to Minneapolis. Full, modern shopping one mile south in Savage, Minnesota. Most of their RV sites are level with mature shade trees. Clean, well maintained, family atmosphere. Staff are friendly and help you back your trailer into your site. Showers and latrines are immaculate. Two washers, two big driers (quarters only). Small camp store in the office sells necessities. Surprise free random ice cream social in the game room on one day of our six-day stay! Rented a fire pit with wood bundle for only $5. Just added new sand to kids' playground and upgraded the Internet connection. Dump site turn-out is close to the entrance-exit. Highly recommended. We camped at Town & Country RV Park and Campground in a Travel Trailer.
