Glenwood Canyon Resort, Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Date of Stay: August, 2015 - $59.00
Overall Rating:

I was a bit concerned after reading through the reviews & the much discussed manager (I think he is one of the owners) but was relieved to find the staff was very helpful and courteous although they were well rehearsed in 'once your payment is processed there is are no refund' & 'we are sorry you are having trouble with the wifi, here is a password for the laundry room wifi or you may ENJOY the internet at the No Name Bar and Grill'. The implication here is there is no service guarantee or apologies. The camp wifi has an intentional filter on it - works great to access the park's own website & sometimes to download email, but everything else is filtered (verified with a scanner). Clearly the claim of wifi misrepresents the service. At least the Bar doesn't mind if you don't buy anything while you use a table. The whole place seems owned by the same people although everything in the park has a different legal name (bar, campground, rafting outfit, zipline) I assume all for some tax or legal liability setup.

The back in full sites are spacious but everything is gravel, some trees give some shade, summer afternoons can be hot. Sewer drains are oddly placed at the front of the site rather than back where dump valves are so I (and others) had to make a stop to buy another 10' of sewer hose to reach. They have no cable and local air channels are limited to a couple children's channels, PBS and some rerun UHF channels.

The lower campsites (smaller rigs) are right on the river and quite beautiful but very closely packed together and just across the river is the train track. Not a problem up the hill where we were but definitely a trade off for being next to the river. They have some cute cabins along the river. You could fish right from your campsite if inclined.

Pluses: Location - the canyon is beautiful. Access for big rigs is good both for backing in and turning around. We camped at Glenwood Canyon Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Rafting trips right on site a short walk across the parking lot. Guides were good, safety conscious and equipment was in good condition.

Bike rentals in town can take you up the the canyon for a 16 mile downhill ride. Beautiful scenery.

Safeway, City Market (Kroger), Walmart in town. Lots of good restaurant choices nearby, Near some of best flyfishing rivers in the country.
