Tanbark Campground, Dickson, Tennessee

Date of Stay: July, 2012 - $13.00
Overall Rating:

We paid the Passport America rate for our site at this distinctly no-frills campground. The park has easy access from Interstate 40. The office staff was pleasant. The campground has gravel roads. Four blacktopped, 30 amp pull-through sites and a few additional 50-amp pull-through sites were readily available. Most of the other sites appeared to be occupied on a seasonal basis. The bathroom facilities were hard-used but clean. The free Wi-Fi was so slow one simply quit trying to use it. Overall, this is a decent over-nite stop at a bargain-basement price. We camped at Tanbark Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Cloud Nine Park, Hot Springs, Arkansas

Date of Stay: July, 2012 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

We paid the Good Sam rate. This park is literally on a mountain top. One reaches it via a paved, curvy, and somewhat steep 1/4 mile private road. The sites are level, well-drained, and have a great view. The Wi-Fi is free and fast. The temperature atop the mountain is 10 degrees cooler than Hot Springs (where it hit 104 during our stay). We found the hostess/manager to be a charming and informative character. This is a great campground. We camped at Cloud Nine Park in a Travel Trailer.

Park Ridge RV Campground, Van Buren, Arkansas

Date of Stay: June, 2012 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

We paid the Good Sam rate. The park is a study in contrasts. It boasts a beautiful location, good layout, and is well shaded by many large trees. The teenager who checked us in and took us to our site was pleasant and efficient. But there is a dark side. The Wi-Fi was free and functioned. The office porch is filthy, and the office is dark and smells. the laundry room is semi-clean at best, although the broken machines from 2 years ago have been replaced by functioning well-used ones. The pre-teen manager's son roars about the campground on a quad-runner, stirring up dust from the gravel roadway. Still, it is an acceptable place to overnight, or to base camp while touring Van Buren or Fort Smith. We camped at Park Ridge RV Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Enchanted Trails RV Park & Trading Post, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Date of Stay: June, 2012 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

We paid the Passport America rate. This park has large, pull-through sites in a largely graveled area. It is clean and well laid out. Part of the staff are friendly. Six vintage restored travel trailers are available for nightly rental. The park location offers easy access to the old Route 66 highway eastward through Albuquerque. This park is close to Interstate I-40, and the road noise may bother some. We will gladly return again. We camped at Enchanted Trails RV Park & Trading Post in a Travel Trailer.

Big Texan RV Ranch (formerly Amarillo Ranch RV Park), Amarillo, Texas

Date of Stay: June, 2012 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

We paid a discounted rate based on our Passport America affiliation. Access to and from the interstate is quick and simple. Staff are friendly and helpful. One is escorted to one's site. Interior roads are paved, and sites are level. A free shuttle to a local steakhouse is available. The campground provides free coffee and donuts for campers from 8-9 each morning. A water park is directly adjacent to the campground entrance. We camped at Big Texan RV Ranch (formerly Amarillo Ranch RV Park) in a Travel Trailer.

Cherry Hill Mobile Home Park, Tulsa, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: June, 2012 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This is a decent value for an overnight stop. It is a convenient on/off from the interstate. Wi-Fi is available at the office building in the laundry room. Although the RV sites are adjacent to semi-permanent mobile homes, the park is quiet, shady, and clean. We camped at Cherry Hill Mobile Home Park in a Travel Trailer.

Hwy 160 RV Park, Highlandville, Missouri

Date of Stay: June, 2012 - $8.00
Overall Rating:

This is a no-frills park located behind an antique mall. There is no bathhouse, but the restroom inside the mall is available during business hours. Very pleasant owner-managers. This is an inexpensive bargain stop when visiting Branson, which is 15 miles away. We paid the Passport America rate. We'll gladly return when in the area again. We camped at Hwy 160 RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Deer Ridge Camping Resort, Richmond, Indiana

Date of Stay: June, 2012 - $19.00
Overall Rating:

We paid the Passport America rate. This is an older park that is reasonably well maintained. We have stopped here almost annually, and find the PA-assigned sites to be clean and nicely shaded from the afternoon/evening sun. Campground staff are consistently courteous, but their moods are visibly "variable". We camped at Deer Ridge Camping Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Wilderness RV Resorts at Silver Springs, Silver Springs, Florida

Date of Stay: February, 2012 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

This is an exceptionally well cared-for and attractive park with a gated entrance and exit. There is a diner-restaurant on the premises (a nice feature), but the food operation business is for sale and there appears to be some dissension in the ranks of diner staff. Wi-Fi is now free, but tends to be a bit slow at times. Modem hookups are available in the lodge, and these are lightning fast. This a good rural campground in which to kick back or to sample the features of the Ocala Silver Springs area. We have achieved geezer status, and for those our age I'd have rated this a "10", but the lack of playgrounds results in our overall "9" rating. We camped at Wilderness RV Resorts at Silver Springs in a Travel Trailer.

Ja-Mar RV Resort, South, Port Richey, Florida

Date of Stay: February, 2012 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

This is a suburban park located just off Route US-19 in Port Richey. The majority of the sites are permanent or seasonal, but this is a Passport America campground as well, and member sites are available year-round as long as one makes reservations for a minimum of seven days. The management is quite friendly, competent, and firm. Although this is an older park, it is exceedingly well cared for, and makes a great base camp location from which to sample the Orlando and Tampa-area attractions. Or just kick back, which is another prime reason for our continued visits. We camped at Ja-Mar RV Resort, South in a Travel Trailer.

Wekiva Falls RV Resort, Sorrento, Florida

Date of Stay: February, 2012 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We camped here as participants in a 200-RV Passport America rally. The cited rate was included in our rally fee. Three years ago, new ownership began to rebuild a once-fine park that had fallen into disrepair. It is now a thoroughly enjoyable campground with many features. One of these is a small lake/swimming area with a mighty fountain that is located in a large ravine which bisects the park. There is a fee for Wi-Fi access, which we elected not to use. We hope to return in the future. We camped at Wekiva Falls RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Small, well-upgraded campground with an enthusiastic, friendly young couple as owner/managers. It is a fine overnight stop and is on our "glad to return again" list. We camped at Walkabout Camp & RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

South of the Border, Dillon, South Carolina

Date of Stay: February, 2012 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

This is an almost automatic overnight stop for us on our trek down I-95 to Florida. The rate listed included our AARP discount for a full-hookup pull-through site, which was level and paved. The park decor is aged and a bit tacky - though freshly painted. The entire "SOB" complex may be undergoing a renewal or freshening. Free Wi-Fi is now available in the RV park and the motel offices. And some of the tackiest merchandise has disappeared from the shops. We camped at South of the Border in a Travel Trailer.

Ja-Mar RV Resort, South, Port Richey, Florida

Date of Stay: October, 2011 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

We paid the daily Passport America rate for our 18-day stay (one must stay a minimum of 7 days to qualify for that PA rate). This is a suburban RV park, the majority of whose residents are older seasonal types who arrive about late October and depart about April. A limited number of sites are retained for shorter-term visitors. We would recommend reservations. The park is almost 36 years old, and has had constant improvements and upgrades. It is proudly managed in a friendly manner and maintained by several generations of its founding family. It makes a fine base camp for visits to Disney, Tampa, and other attractions: or simply to kick back and relax with a sequence of novels. Two items to note: (1) As with most older parks, individual sites are not overly large, and (2) the Wi-Fi is almost totally limited to the combination library/computer room (and one must bring one's own laptop). We've visited yearly for 3 of the past 4 years. And we will return again. We camped at Ja-Mar RV Resort, South in a Travel Trailer.
