Ohio Turnpike - Vermilion Valley Service Plaze, Amherst, Ohio

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We have been greatly impressed by our previous stays at Ohio Turnpike service areas with RV parking facilities. This one was not as impressive. The sites were level and the electrical boxes were in good repair. There is potable water and a dump station. The availability of services at the service area are the same as any on the Ohio Turnpike. The problem here is the layout. The other service areas we have stayed at are pull through. This one is back in. If you are traveling without a towed vehicle, this is not a problem. A vehicle on a tow bar would be a bit of a pain. Using a tow dolly, as we do, makes this setup very inconvenient. Fortunately these facilities are rarely used to capacity, and there was a diesel pusher parked across 3 spots, so I only felt a little guilt parking cross ways and taking up 2 spots. Try to avoid sites 1 through 5 if you plan on accessing the potable water or dump station , as they are located across from site 5. Whether constrained by space requirements or wanting to try different idea, the design of this area is way less friendly than the pull through design used at other service areas. We camped at Ohio Turnpike - Vermilion Valley Service Plaze in a Motorhome.

Walnut Woods State Park, West Des Moines, Iowa

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

This is a great little state park in an area that is short on places to camp in an RV. There are about 24 sites total, all back in. About 1/3 of these are full hook-up, and the rest electric only. There are a half dozen electric only sites that are first come first served. The rest must be reserved at least 2 days in advance, and can only be reserved online. The sites are only 30 feet long, and the interior roads have some tight corners, so this is not the place for large rigs. Walnut Woods is very near the river, so if it has been raining excessively, you will see some water. After a whole night of rain, we awoke to some flooding. One or two of the concrete pads were half covered with water, but ours was not. The campground is well maintained and the "park ranger" in charge is very helpful and friendly. We camped at Walnut Woods State Park in a Motorhome.

Amana Colonies RV Park, Amana, Iowa

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

This is a well kept campground that hosts many different event through the year. We stayed on one of the few weekends without an event, so it was sparsely populated. All services were in excellent condition. The full service sites only have 20 and 50 amp outlets. An adapter for 30 amp is provided at check-in. Our main reason for staying here is that it is open in April and was fairly close to Cedar Rapids. Instead of following the GPS to get of I-80 at Tiffin and following US-6 to US-151 north. I would get on the I-380 to exit 10 (Swisher) and head west to US-151, the US-151 south to the campground. Much straigher, less hilly, and the hamlet of Swisher is unlikely to suffer from traffic congestion. We camped at Amana Colonies RV Park in a Motorhome.

Ohio Turnpike - Wyandot Service Plaza, Berea, Ohio

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

This is essentially a parking lot with electrical hook ups. I wish more states did this at rest areas. No need to exit the turnpike. Sites have no sewer or water hook up, but the dump station and potable water are easy access, and you are only supposed to stay one 24 hour period anyway. Fast food, toilets, and fuel are all available as part of the service area. Sites are only 40 feet long, so larger outfits may not find them as convenient as we did. There is a kiosk to pay the $20 and get the receipt that doubles as your pass, so there is no need to enter the main building. We camped at Ohio Turnpike - Wyandot Service Plaza in a Motorhome.

Cross Winds Family Campground, Linwood, North Carolina

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here again, only this time, opted for a wooded site instead of the transient sites right by the office. Definitely happy with that choice. Site was level and plenty long enough. The shade was a real benefit. The hookups all worked well. the Wi-Fi was excellent. There are trails through the woods for walking. The price was the only downside in my opinion. But it is not out of line with the prices encountered this summer. We would, and most likely will, stay here again. We camped at Cross Winds Family Campground in a Motorhome.

Scuffletown RV Park Inc. (formerly Scuffletown USA Campground), Simpsonville, South Carolina

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here for 2 nights while visiting friends in the Simpsonville area. Park is older, but nicely arranged and the utilities are in good, functional shape. Entrance might be a little tight for larger rigs. Interior road would be no problem. We were met at the check in point and quickly escorted to our site. Site was level and well drained, as we arrived shortly after Hurricane Michael went through the area, and there was no problem with water. The hookups, though obviously older, all worked well. The WiFi worked well, though they do not allow streaming video. We camped at Scuffletown RV Park Inc. (formerly Scuffletown USA Campground) in a Motorhome.

Cherry Grove Campground, Wolcott, New York

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here for 2 nights while attending the Sterling Renaissance Festival. $40 seems to be the going rate for a full hookup in this area. All utilities were in good condition and located in a logical manner. The park is majority seasonal sites with 20 "over night" pull through sites. Our site was quite level with just enough slope so that water would not pool. All the sites are quite close, but are well maintained and kept in order. The wi-fi worked well. There is a trail set aside for dog walking. A pool, miniature golf, and a large "jumping pillow" available. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Cherry Grove Campground in a Motorhome.

Caskeys Campground, Orrville, Ohio

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here for 2 nights while visiting Lehman's Hardware in Kidron. I think the campground was originally built to support attendance at the, now defunct, Wild West Show arena next door. Most of the sites appear to be occupied by seasonal campers, but sites are neat and well maintained. Our site was grass and fairly level with 30 amp electric and water. There is a dump station on the exit road and a pumping service is provided for a fee. The staff and fellow campers were courteous and friendly. There is a well maintained swimming pond and a pond for fishing. We would stay here again if we were in the area. We camped at Caskeys Campground in a Motorhome.

Ohio Turnpike - Tiffin River Service Plaza, West Unity, Ohio

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Essentially an RV parking lot with 20,30, and 50 amp electric hookups. Potable water and a dump station are easily accessible. Fast food, convenience store, bathrooms, and fuel are all available as part of the turnpike service area. I wish more rest areas were like this, as it allows you to spend the night without having to leave the highway. All the RV facilities were in excellent condition. I definitely plan to utilize this service when traveling through Ohio in the future. We camped at Ohio Turnpike - Tiffin River Service Plaza in a Motorhome.

Cherry Glen COE, Johnston, Iowa

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here 5 nights while visiting family in the greater Des Moines area. A great Corps of Engineers campground. The area itself is hilly, but the sites are all quite level. Our site had 20 and 30 amp electric, but 50 amp is available. No water or sewer at site, but there was a potable water spigot less than 50 feet from out site. Dump station and main potable water is at the entrance. Bathrooms and showers were all well maintained and very clean. Although there is no direct access to Saylorville Lake from the campground, access is just outside the campground entrance. We camped at Cherry Glen COE in a Motorhome.

Sandy Beach Camp, Solon, Iowa

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here 4 nights while visiting family in Swisher / Cedar Rapids. A great Corps of Engineers campground. Sites were level and well maintained. Bathrooms and showers were very well maintained and very clean. Interior road are well maintained and easy to navigate. Dump station and potable water are at the entrance. The road from I380 to the entrance is 2 lane, but plenty wide enough. Though it is a bit rough in spots. Park was pretty empty when we arrived on a Thursday evening, but filled up by Saturday morning. Fellow campers were friendly, courteous and respectful. Longer stays might find the lack of water, sewer, and wi-fi a negative. But, for $20 a night and being right on the lake, I feel it is a great value. We camped at Sandy Beach Camp in a Motorhome.

River's Edge Cottages & RV Park, Vergennes, Vermont

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

I was actually referred here by River Bend Campground in New Haven, as their one pull through site was being used. It really seems the campgrounds in this area are geared to seasonal resident. The staff was friendly and helpful. the campground is very well maintained and tended. Sites were level and in great shape. They have one site for non-seasonal campers, so it is hit and miss if they have an opening. We camped at River's Edge Cottages & RV Park in a Motorhome.
