Winter Haven Resort, Brownsville, Texas

Date of Stay: January, 2016 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

I agree with Morpauwe's review. Any type or age of RV is welcome. Some of the sites are unlevel, some have a dip-curb causing entry dragging. Also ask about side proximity to extend slides and trees with flocks of birds. There is a house behind the park where dogs are off their chains at night, pacing behind the RVs barking all night. Roosters crow all night. Three times I went to security between 1:30-3:30 a.m. who would not respond to the situation, so I was asked to call the police, who requested I contact animal control, which only work during the day. You know where that went. Since the resort is run by the permanent HOA, the office is closed after 4:30 p.m. and all weekend. On a Saturday morning the laundry was covered in long dog hair and it was in the dryer filter also. I went to security to inquire about cleaning, and of course, nothing could be done until Monday, so I had to launder in town. There are three nice, warm pools and a spa near the clubhouse. There are many activities, such as dances, shows, breakfasts, and dinners that are reasonably priced. Most activities require a ticket that goes on sale the 25th for the following month, with many activities sold out. There is a competition between activities, such as line dancing and cards, that compete for shared space (dancers can't hear music for card players' chatter, and vice versa), so you sign-in to show which activity is the most popular. Most people are nice and welcoming, although several off-the-wall comments were made to us. You will fit best, or it will be known, if you are between the ages of 70 to 97, white, married, straight, Christian, republican, nondrinkers and cost conscious. If they can't figure you out, they will ask! There were several ambulance calls, one was fatal. Another day the activities were cancelled for a memorial. They have well-attended chapel services, lead by a Baptist pastor. Baptisms are done in the swimming pool. We camped at Winter Haven Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Two days will cover South Padre Island. Entry into Matamoros is unsafe. As such, we will not return to the Brownsville area.

Bentsen Palm Village RV Park , Palmview, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2015 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

The best aspect of this park is the guests, mostly active, young retirees, and the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park bird sanctuary for hiking and biking. The park features a club house, craft room, wood shop and several palapas. The pool is heated well, and we enjoyed the hot tub. There are plenty of machines in the laundry, clean and reasonably priced. The park management also sponsors dinners, shows, and the favorite, Wednesday night margarita socials. Other activities included exercise, line dancing, cards and breakfasts. We also enjoyed the park-sponsored river cruise. There were many good restaurants in the area that we attended as a group. The site spacing is good, especially if you are in one of the "wheel hubs." We had a large patio with nice landscaping, including rose bushes. We were welcome to pick free citrus fruit from the trees behind our RV and could have utilized a garden plot if we were there longer. We camped at Bentsen Palm Village RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Besides the bird park, a butterfly park is within bicycle riding distance. A nearby firing range is also available to the resort gun club.
