El Chorro Regional Park Campground, San Luis Obispo, California

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

18 dry sites. Best I could tell they grossly underestimated the length of the pull throughs. I think ours was quoted as 50 foot and it fit our rig, 53 ft truck hooked up, plus easily enough length for another pickup . With all the rain, mud was a factor, off the graded gravel roads and sites, on gravel was fine. Pads were remarkably level side to side. Though mud was a gactor, there was also lots of wild grass and no dust, both due to the daily rains. We get half off at state parks so Morro Bay SP would have been cheaper, but this park is unique and right were we needed to be for the weekend. Nice picnic tables and solid fire rings. We camped at El Chorro Regional Park Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Check the size carefully if you go for the hookups in the upper loop. Many of those would be tough with our long bed crew cab and 30 ft toyhauler.

Doc and Al's, Bridgeport, California

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

The hookups were full, so they put us "in the meadow" a great grassy area with wide open access for the rig and parking two pickups. Older kace but we especially enjoyed the wide open area as we carry over 120 gal fw and solar, so we were sitting pretty. We will go there any time we are. In the bridgeport area. We camped at Doc and Al's in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Watch the overhead branches if you're in a big rig. Tight little park with cabins and rental tts but we were wide open. Remember, this is not a ultra modern park. It's a little old, year round fish camp. With RV s added and accessable during later spring through fall. Unless you drive an RV snow plow stay away in winter.

Emma Wood State Beach, Ventura, California

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Hey. It is what it is. Totally dry camping on beach front dirt. Sandwiched between a rocky beach and the railroad tracks on a piece of what's left from what was US Hwy 1, PCH. WE LOVE IT but it does lack alot that you get in the fancy places. Ranger checks daily to see that all vehicles have tags indicating that you are paid up and otherwise they leave you alone. We camped at Emma Wood State Beach in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Don't go there unless you are fully self contained, have plenty of water and holding capacity for you stay. GOD only knows where you would have to go for water or dump. Grocery and the West end of old Ventura just a couple miles walk and 3-4 miles to drive. Too many vagrants there but a modern Vons.

Lake Skinner Recreation Area, Winchester, California

Date of Stay: March, 2016 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed on site B. Nice spot with some shade but our solar still going strong. Backed up to the grass looking across at Site C. Nice little camp store. Snack bar. Play areas for kids but we could care less. Really nice level paved roads to ride bikes all over the park. We also stay there annually in a special area for out group during the Balloon and Wine Festival and that is really great as well. Week nights low level of folks and low level of noise. Generally nice quiet evenings. Weekends not so much quiet but still nice. We camped at Lake Skinner Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Great Southern California wine valley. Dozens of wineries and cute old town back several miles to the West in Temecula. Active hot air balloon companies roam the valley at sunrise but mostly not visible from the camp as they tend to launch from wineries to the West of Camp and land West of camp. Worth getting up early and driving to the area of Wilson Creek or Ponte wineries to see the balloons. Remember sunrise. They are done by two hours after the sun comes up.
