Newport Dunes Waterfront RV Resort, Newport Beach, California

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $222.00
Overall Rating:

This was our first visit. We stayed over Labor Day weekend. The row of RV spaces that face the bay are spacious with a great view. But we could not justify that cost (almost $500/night) so we stayed one row back (at $290/night). This web page would not allow me to input a price higher than $222. Yes it was Labor Day weekend. I suspect that prices are lower during quieter times. Our space was 40' by 20'. We were able to fit with our toad. Our space was separated by chain link fence from our neighbors so there was little privacy. We could not level our RV. We didn't have enough blocks with us to compensate for the back to front slope. The sewer drains are about a foot off the ground so they don't gravity feed. The RV spaces are decidedly less than memorable but there are several good qualities to this campground. The staff was always helpful. In particular, the activities department staff were stellar. They hosted a variety of kids events each day starting at 11am. Our grandkids loved them. Most were free but some, like the "ice cream social" had a small charge. To us, the activities staff were the best part of this campground. The beach area on Back Bay was kept clean and is attractive. They have non-powered watercraft for rent, at very high prices ($20 to rent a life preserver for example). The pool area and bathrooms were kept clean and were well maintained. We saw staff patrolling around. But they appeared to be reluctant to enforce rules. People routinely double parked their cars and the 10pm quiet hour was merely a suggestion. We had to ask 4 people to move their cars on the morning that we left. I don't know if we will return. The inability to level, especially at these prices, and the hassles of draining the water tanks are likely more trouble than they are worth. We camped at Newport Dunes Waterfront RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Pacific Shores Motorcoach Resort (Formerly Outdoor Resorts), Newport, Oregon

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $105.00
Overall Rating:

This is an ownership resort located on a bluff overlooking a beach 2 miles north of Newport Oregon. One rents an individually space from the HOA. As a result, each space has different amenities that the owner provided. As other reviewers pointed out, the resort has size and type restrictions for RVs. All common area facilities (2 pools, 2 spas and meeting rooms) are maintained to a very high standard. But one should expect this for such a high rate. The landscaping is very attractive. Its a very short walk down to the beach, which is very picturesque. Our space (#28) had an overlook view of the ocean. We had a stiff breeze out of the northeast for the 4 days that we were there. While it is on US 101, we didn't hear traffic. But were on the bluff, away from the road. There were no community activities while we there so we used this a base to visit the local area. In our space, we headed in so we had an ocean view out our front window. The utilities were conveniently located. The only unusual factor was that the resort was less than half full over Memorial Day weekend. Perhaps due to the rates. We met several owners while we were walking around the grounds. All were very pleasant. We enjoyed ourselves and will return. We camped at Pacific Shores Motorcoach Resort (Formerly Outdoor Resorts) in a Motorhome.

Crescent City / Redwoods KOA, Crescent City, California

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Located in the redwoods about 4 miles north of Crescent City. Staff was very helpful. The campground is well maintained. The road and site are gravel and are level. The bathrooms and showers are kept to a high standard. The RV sites are in a clearing and so are mostly satellite friendly. The tent sites are very unique, among the redwoods withs lots of space between sites. The RV sites are in a clearing, have shrubs between them but are rather close together. Parking our RV required planning and adjustment to be able to extend the slides on both sides. We camped at Crescent City / Redwoods KOA in a Motorhome.

Don Laughlin's Riverside Resort RV Park, Laughlin, Nevada

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This park is terraced into the hillside above the Riverside Casino. The RV pads are concrete and the surrounding area is crushed rock (its the Mojave Desert). There is virtually no vegetation but I wasn't expecting any. The utilities worked great. We didn't use the shower or bathrooms but the ones near us were being remodeled and will be quite nice when completed. The park is quite large, over 700 spaces.

The RV park provides easy access to hotels (free shuttle bus was running 24/7 over the weekend) and the Colorado River - good utilities and large spaces - very friendly employees. Excellent Verizon cell reception.

But this RV park is just that, a great place to park. One must go outside the park for activities / shows / restaurants. If you are someone who needs a lot of in-park activities, this park won't work for you. No shade since you're in the desert.

We spent our days on the river and had several nice dinners in the hotels. We were near the top of the hill and had a nice view of the river and the town lights at night.

A group near us was using it as a base for riding their motorcyles along Route 66.

We will return. We camped at Don Laughlin's Riverside Resort RV Park in a Motorhome.

Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, Lancaster, California

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This is a concrete lot on the north side of the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds with full hookups and 50 amp power for $25/night. We stayed here one night as a stopover on a trip. There are no services here other than hookups. The rv slots are painted lines on the ground.

If you are attending an event at the Fairgrounds, it is an ideal location. If there is no fairgrounds event, as for our night, this camp is quiet and isolated.

There were many longer term residents during our stay, working on the new solar panel farms outside of town according to our neighbor.

The camping slots are wide and easy to access. The power voltage was consistent as the water pressure. Be sure to check in with the RV park manager since they do take reservations. That wasn't clear to us when we used the self service check-in. We later saw it in their printed rules.

We didn't use the bathrooms or showers as we stayed in our unit. There was a consistent 20 knot west wind all night long so nobody was using awnings.

Basic services for a reasonable price. We camped at Antelope Valley Fairgrounds in a Motorhome.

Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground, Buellton, California

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $55.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here over the 4th of July weekend. Our first visit here. This park is really 2 parks in one. The older section has dirt/gravel spaces with large trees with wide shade. It appeared that there are many longer term residents in that section and a few of those units appeared to be in poor condition.

We stayed in the newer section which had concrete pads and no shade. This was just fine with us since we watch satellite TV. I don't think that would be possible in the older section.

The office / pool area / diner were in nearly new condition. The staff very friendly and helpful. There was a fenced off section in the newer area where the staff told us that a 2nd pool is under construction.

Power supply was consistently good as was the water pressure.

The staff were holding games & events throughout the weekend, mostly for kids. They also showed free movies in a grass area each evening. Lots of kids running around and riding their bikes. There are 2 nearly new playgrounds for the kids. Staff were around regularly and appeared to be enforcing the rules. The bathroom & shower facilities are in great condition. They are serviced once a day but could have used more frequent service on this very busy weekend. We had a great time here and will definitely return. We camped at Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground in a Motorhome.

Ocean Mesa Campground at El Capitan, Santa Barbara, California

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $94.00
Overall Rating:

This is a sister park to El Capitan Canyon, an adjacent "glamping" facility with common ownership. Ocean Mesa is on the north side of the 101 about 20 miles due west of downtown Santa Barbara. The park is set on a hillside above El Capitan State Beach. It is a half mile walk to the state beach. Free admission if you walk in.

The park is maintained to a high standard with a nice pool and the staff is very friendly. The power was consistent at 50 amps and the water pressure was adequate. This is an expensive park to visit but you get open space with a short walk to the beach. This is the only RV park that I know of that has an on-site massage therapist, with 3 hours notice.

El Capitan Canyon has a Saturday night summer concert series which we missed by a few weeks. Summer weekends have a 3 night minimum. We will return. We camped at Ocean Mesa Campground at El Capitan in a Motorhome.
