Soledad Canyon Park / Thousand Trails, Acton, California

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $3.00
Overall Rating:

Others have spelled out most of the good and bad about this park, but I notice that cell reception in section K has improved considerably since I visited in 2016. I'm getting very good speeds on both ATT & Verizon, ATT seems better. No booster, no extra antennas. But I think it's only good up toward the northeast end of the section, it might still be spotty farther down. Electricity usually works but use an outlet tester before settling on a site, I've found reversed polarity a couple of times. And keep an eye on the voltage, it's usually pretty low. We camped at Soledad Canyon Park / Thousand Trails in a Motorhome.

Afton Canyon Campground BLM, Barstow, California

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $6.00
Overall Rating:

Beautiful dry camping spot, EXCEPT... the road in. Washboarding and steepness are the two main problems, but rocks and ruts are also numerous. I had been here before in a car and had totally forgotten about that. So, not knowing any better, I headed down in my 33" Class A towing a car. There's no place to turn around anyway. I made it safely, and things actually didn't get smashed up too badly. Perhaps I should wait until I leave safely before posting this review. There are two very steep uphill sections awaiting. But, the campsites are nice, level, and fairly well-spaced. There seem to be about ten of them, all tent and van campers. Plenty of open sites on a weekday in April, but the weather is starting to get hot. If you have a Jeep or 4x4 truck, you should be able to ford the river just past the campground, and there seem to be more places to explore the next mile or two. This is the Mojave Road, and it becomes a challenging 4x4 route in places. Railroad tracks through the canyon, about 16 trains/day, but no horns. Some campsites are fairly far from the tracks if that's a bother. Decent cell service from Verizon and AT&T, AT&T seems better. Range of 4-25 Megabit. We camped at Afton Canyon Campground BLM in a Motorhome.

Mountain Valley RV Park, Tehachapi, California

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

I really enjoyed my stay here; four nights mid week. I didn't see anybody else staying more than 1-2 nights. In daytime the park was almost deserted.

Other reviews pretty much have it. Small park, water & electric only. Convenient to Tehachapi. Water pressure didn't seem as low as others described; electric was great at 119 volts with both AC's cranked.

Only downside was that my site was deceptively unlevel, front was about 6" low no matter how I parked, so I had to use some boards to get within the range of my jacks. I'm not sure all the sites are like that, but be prepared. It's pretty flat terrain (it's at an airstrip, after all), that's why it's deceptive.

Nice small laundry room, machines were in good shape and only $1 per load. Bring your own quarters. My best campground laundry experience to date.

Wi-Fi is available through a third party, and it's pretty costly, $10 a day, I think, so I didn't use it. If you drive over to the airfield, you can connect for free.

While I was there, they had to close the dump station because of bees. I assume it was just temporary. Love's Travel Stop is available up the street. We camped at Mountain Valley RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

When I was there, Love's on Tehachapi Blvd was the cheapest gas in town by about 30 cents. A town of prairie dogs on the airfield provided some mild amusement.

Viento State Park, Hood River, Oregon

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

Well, this is a nice little park with one big caveat, which is the railroad crossing on the river access road, and one small caveat, which is the lack of even a dump station. Traveling solo and male, I was able to stretch my tanks, but other should take note.

I spent 12 nights in the site nearest the railroad crossing and survived. I sort of like being near trains, but the horns are very loud. Nonetheless, I grew accustomed to it, and wasn't awakened more than once or twice. But that's me, everybody responds differently.

The park has two major advantages. One is actually the railroad crossing... because so many people dislike trains, it's possible to get a space on a summer weekend without booking far in advance. I was able to book summer weekends 3-4 weeks ahead. The other advantage is that it's one of the few parks that has Columbia River access, a nice little picnic area that's only a short walk away.

On an earlier 2-night visit, I arrived to find my site occupied. Just a trailer, no tow vehicle, hooked up but nobody around. The host was very helpful, and they moved me to a "reserve" site that they kept open for such things. So thumbs-up to the staff for handling it well. We camped at Viento State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Hood River is about 7-10 miles away, and has essential shopping plus a trendy main street. More types of beer than the whole country had in the 1980's. There's supposedly a public dump station there, but since I was coming/going from the Portland area, I used the Camping World in Troutdale en route.

Pony Express RV Park, Julesburg, Colorado

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This is okay for a 1-2 night stop, especially considering where it is. I stayed 2 nights, since the next available site with hookups is quite a distance.

The "park" is basically a loop of grass/gravel sites behind a store that never seems to be open. Call ahead and the owner will meet you. It's high plains country, sparsely populated, so don't expect "resort" maintenance. Hookups seem to work well, power is actually a full 120 volts. I was able to get level with a little back and forth. Not sure if the WiFi really works, but AT&T reception seems okay.

It looks like there are a couple of semi-permanent trailers, and 2-3 overnighters each day, but I rarely saw anybody, peaceful day and night. Owner is friendly. We camped at Pony Express RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If you need gas, drive into Julesburg, about 2 miles, where gas is about 25 cents a gallon cheaper than at the exit. There's not much else in town, but there is a grocer that I didn't check out.

Kanakadea Park, Hornell, New York

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $19.00
Overall Rating:

I had a last-minute change of route, and this park was located where I needed to stop. On a June Saturday night, they only had no-hookup spaces. The web site said they were $14, they charged me the $19 hookup rate, and didn't give me my 10% discount for being old. I was too tired to complain.

The grass site was almost impossible to get level on, but I was able to spill over into some empty space and park sideways on a hill and after 2-3 tries, found a spot that could level.

All that sounds awful, but it's such a nice park I didn't care, and after all, it was a last-minute thing. Friendly neighbors helped me level. Beautiful location on a lake or reservoir; other campers said the fishing was great. Seemed like a nice family-oriented crowd, well-maintained lawn. I would definitely recommend one of the hookup sites, which are on level ground and very reasonably priced. We camped at Kanakadea Park in a Motorhome.

St. Johnsville Campsite Marina, St. Johnsville, New York

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Nice municipal park and marina, beautiful location along the Erie Canal. Spacious site, I confess it was five parks ago so I can't remember many other details. All the riverfront spots were taken, presumably on seasonal leases. so they told me to pick any spot in the back row. On a June weekday, most of that row was empty.

It does abut a busy railroad, which may bother some but for me it's a plus. The trains are frequent but not especially loud; there are no crossings nearby, so they don't blast the horn as they come through. If you do like trains, this place is fantastic. We camped at St. Johnsville Campsite Marina in a Motorhome.

Easterlin Park Campground, Oakland Park, Florida

Date of Stay: April, 2016 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

I spent my first few weeks of motorhome ownership here, and it was excellent for my needs, being located close to the city. It's a well-kept park with helpful staff. The roads are tight, but I was able to navigate them in a 33 ft Class A on my first day driving it.

The higher-numbered spaces are closer to the railroad tracks, and mine was perhaps the closest of all. I generally enjoy being around the trains, but some would blast the horn right nearby. I slept with the window open one night and was awakened by the first commuter train in grand fashion.

The office received packages and called me when they arrived.

WiFi was a little spotty when I arrived, but as the park emptied through April, it became very good.

The discount for tri-county residents is being discontinued, so the new price ($40) is rather high for a public park. But it's an urban location in Florida. After May 1st, I believe the rate is lower. The winter dates fill up early.

It appears that a card access system is being installed, but I didn't ask. No charge for day visitors except on weekend daytimes, and then only $1.50. We camped at Easterlin Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Head east to US 1 for a full range of shopping/dining choices, plus Whole Food/Trader Joe's. Piola Italian restaurant on US 1 was a frequent stop when I lived nearby. I used Rainbow Laundry in Wilton Manors. It's a bit of a drive, but a nicer neighborhood.
