Ocean Lakes Family Campground, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

My review mimics others. Over 800 campsites, plus beach cottages. On average Summer day we were told around 35,000 folks in this park. Great service, very friendly campers. Great on site amenities for entire family. Off site services nearby, as this is Myrtle Beach. Ocean Lakes was one of the very first mega campsites in Myrtle Beach; started with 30 campsites, now we'll, over 800. We needed heater service and they took care of us on site within one day. Complete parts and service store and sales. Other commercial, franchise campgrounds are probably mirrored after this one. This campground has over 320 acres, so almost a mile wide by a mile long. The closer you are to the beach the higher your site fee. We were 224 feet from beach. The reviewer who mentioned golf carts was accurate. There are more golf carts in use here than at Fort Wilderness at Disney. Late at night the kids do tend to go a little crazy but I never felt bothered or threatened by them. Golf carts are as essential as one's camper in Myrtle Beach. We must have passed ten Golf Cart Retailers! We would come back her again just to enjoy the community of campers. All were friendly and inclusive! Ocean Lakes is their condo community! In Myrtle Beach. Plenty to do. Roads are narrow between rows, but adequate elsewhere. We camped at Ocean Lakes Family Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Wildwood Park, Appling, Georgia

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

12 miles north of I-20, just west of Augusta, Ga. This is a county park. This is a great one-nighter and a great destination park. Also know as Strom Thurmond lake on the maps this is the largest man made lake East of the Mississippi River. Great hiking and bike trails, frisbee golf, and boat access! Two separate boat ramps, totaling eight ramps, with boat rentals available. We spent one night. Roads are wide, easy to navigate. Staff very friendly and helpful. Cell service for AT&T and Verizon were strong, and WiFi actually worked better than most places we stay! Pads have been built up. We wanted to stay connected to our truck since it was for just one night. Site plenty big for truck and 30' trailer, however I did disconnect my pull behind camper boat trailer and all fit easily on site. No sewer. Sites need to be examined before reserving, as some are victim to runoff wash and can be very unlevel, front to back. Ours was perfectly level all four directions! We camped at Wildwood Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Rocks Pond Campground & Marina, Eutawville, South Carolina

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Really, a decent place to spend a night. Mostly long term residents. 10 sites reserved for transients. Called ahead to make reservations but could never get anyone to answer the phone. Left messages. Did get a call back. Had a reservation for site 35. Then day of I called to confirm and they said I had no reservation but come anyway. We did. Enjoyed the lot, view and quiet/peacefulness of the Campground. From the signs around I gather insects are a major concern in heat of summer. You have to want to come here to get here. It is really off the beaten path. 30-40 miles (?) off I 26 or I 95. It made a nice layover after coming out of north Alabama, headed to Charleston. My biggest issue was I could find nothing which indicated what the rates were. Nothing posted around office (which is closed Monday and Tuesdays.) I asked where I could and no one seemed to know, so I paid what I thought I had been quoted when I made initial reservation, of which I did not get a confirmation. We camped at Rocks Pond Campground & Marina in a Fifth Wheel.

Gun Creek Campground - COE, Whittington, Illinois

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

We spent one night here. We stopped here so we could see the George Harrison Billboard Guitar mural prepared by John Cerney in Benton. These are great murals all around the country. This one is on I-57 southbound side. A very nice COE Park. Had full hookups which is unusual for our experience with COE parks. Was very busy for a COE park. Staff and campers were very friendly. Lots were not real level side-to-side. Many were very steep front to back and many campers were almost on the ground in the front and way high in the back. Drive around to pick out your best choice. Our lot was on relatively level ground front-to-back, and off level side-to-side. We camped at Gun Creek Campground - COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Arrow Rock State Historic Site, Arrow Rock, Missouri

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

We came to middle Missouri to go see the Budweiser Clydesdale Foaling Ranch at Warm Springs, near Boonville. We visited several CGs in the area and Arrow Rock was the only one we felt best met our needs of services and security. Arrow Rock is as good a State Park as we have ever camped in. 13 easy miles off I-70. We were able to stay in the only site with full hookups. All others are electric only with a water spigot right on the road which you can actually hook your hose to to fill your fresh water tanks. Great host! We camped at Arrow Rock State Historic Site in a Fifth Wheel.

Turkey Point COE, Melvern, Kansas

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $11.00
Overall Rating:

Previous reviews go back to 2007. It is now August, 2018 and my review echos the others. You have to want to get here, but once here you could spend a day or a few days and enjoy your stay. Because of costs we always try to find a COE campground. This is tied with my favorite. Well kept, wide roads, large sites and great camp host. Park typically full on Summer weekends, but we arrived on Sunday evening and were the only rv in the Park. Cell service was strong for Verizon and AT&T. Electric and water only. We spent one night. On a large lake. We camped at Turkey Point COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Gunsmoke RV Park, Dodge City, Kansas

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

This CG exceeded my expectations. Priced higher than other CGs in Dodge City, but actually turned out to be the best option for us. Earlier reviews mentioned current owners had been here about a year. That have worked very hard to revitalize this CG and it shows. It is about two miles away from Boot Hill activities. The Kansas owned casino is just up the road, though. All sites are pull through. Good shade, which other parks in town did not have. Quiet, where other parks here were next to train tracks. We did not hear a night time train. Locked entry gate after 9:00 which I appreciated. What few permanent campers I could see were up front. All transients like me were in the back. We spent two nights and this would be my first choice upon return. Seemed to be the first choice of others as well, as the camp was full both nights. We camped at Gunsmoke RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Doge City has worked hard to provide a worthwhile experience for tourists. State Owned Casino. Fort Dodge. A farmer owned distillery right on the site of the original Boot Hill. Then there is original mock-up/ museum of Doge City, with Long Branch saloon. We attended evening activities of on-site dinner, cowboy shoot-out and variety show in the Long Branch. Take the trolly tour. Plus medallions to commemorate all the old Gunsmoke stars. Lots to see and do here.

Lathrop State Park, Walsenburg, Colorado

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

Park is at intersection of Hwy 160 and I25. Great little State Park. Golf, Lake, boating, restaurant, hiking. We spent one night here. Park is large and all sites are lateral to the road pull throughs. Sites have electric only with communal water spigots, or they have no utilities at all. We camped at Lathrop State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Morefield Campground (NPS), Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

If you can survive the 4 mile, right on the edge of a mountain, 7 degree slope up and down, this is a great park. Over 200 campsites, about ten with full hookups, the rest no utilities, so be prepared. Plenty of campsites, but they work for mostly rental, class C units and tents! My 30' fifth wheel would have fit on maybe five sites of the no utility loops. We drove around for about twenty minutes until we found one to try and even then we had to make it work. Very uneven, side to side. Lots of deer right on site. The Pueblo Cliff Dwellings are the draw of this park and they are great! We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Fifth Wheel.

Monument Valley KOA, Monument Valley, Utah

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $52.00
Overall Rating:

Other reviews acknowledge newness of this park, so I had no expectations beyond that. The issue for me was I did not get the extra perks one normally gets at KOA for the price I; hence it was not a good value for me. Secondly the staff was almost rude, unfriendly and unhelpful. Enough to turn me off to going back, which I won't. The one review acknowledged the placement of the power posts. The clerk drew on the map how we were to enter our site, but once we got there it was backwards. Everything is right if one enters from the opposite side of the pull through site. Several folks were having the same problem we did. Some figured it out while others did not. It is not clear which site is which by the numbering on the posts. Some folks were clearly not in the site assigned to them. My other issue was the bathrooms. This campground is about the only one in the valley with complete utilities so it draws lots of tent campers who rely on the bathrooms. There were four unisex bathrooms for the entire campground so folks had to wait a good while to get access to one. My photo shows location of campground in the valley and total lack of covering vegetation. We stayed one night. We camped at Monument Valley KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Country Rose RV Park, Fredonia, Arizona

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

We staged from here to go to the North Rim, Zion and Bryce. Could just as easily have taken in Horseshoe Bend and Lake Powell, but those two are on our way back East so just went there and camped. This camp is in Fredonia, Az, however, Kanab, Ut turned out to be a real surprise! It is only 7 miles away and in its hey-day was the Hollywood of Utah. Full range of services. This campground was the best option of all in the area. Small, quiet, clean, and easy to navigate. The owner runs everything himself and seems to be always available, even if sometimes by phone. I called ahead to make reservation to stay, not a reservation for a specific spot. First come, first pick. Good WiFi, good cell. Probably around 20 RV sites. One washer/dryer. One bathroom, and one separate shower. All new/ nice. About five permanent residents. We camped at Country Rose RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Lake Mead Recreational Area - Willow Beach, Lake Mead Recreational Area, Arizona

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

As I write this I have about 15 guinea hens running around my picnic table foraging for whatever and a jack rabbit about three sites down. I am also drinking my morning coffee watching the sun reflect off the Colorado river (just downside of the Hoover Dam) and watching the sun climb down the steep mountain sides. If you ever wanted to camp at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, this is as close as one could ever get! Some RV campgrounds are layovers for other destinations. This is a destination campground. One can take a motorized raft ride right up to the very foot of the dam, plus jet ski and kayak. Cell is spotty, if at all, but WiFi is slow but doable. Full hookups, and sites are almost spectacular in their own right. Concrete pads, borders, and tables. Did I mention you have to drive down 4 1/2 miles into the canyon to get here off of Hwy. 93. We camped at Lake Mead Recreational Area - Willow Beach in a Fifth Wheel.

Red Rock Park, Churchrock, New Mexico

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Basically agree with other reviews. After 4:30 a City worker drives around and collects the fee. I drove around several times trying to find a defined site. I wanted to stay connected with my Fifth wheel, so length was an issue. Electric meters are double sided, so half the lots would not work for standard left side water and electric. That is why most folks were parked any way they could be to get to electric. Plus the meter bases are way forward making disconnecting almost a necessity. Not a level lot in the park. Having said all that, this was a good value for the money and very scenic and very quiet. What interactions we did have with staff was very helpful and pleasant. We would camp here again any time. We camped at Red Rock Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Heyburn Park, Kellyville, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

We are traveling Route 66. This park was recommended by the Sallisaw Tourist Information Service. Very disappointed. Echo other reviews about roads.Worst entry roads I have traveled to get to any park. Called ahead, but recorded message said Park Attendant off Wed & Thurs, would call us back on Friday. We came anyway. There was a list of available sites and honor pay system. Problem was reserved cards were still on the posts from mid-July, making it very difficult to match up printed available sites to ones which appeared to be reserved. Most sites were very uneven. Second COE Park we have stayed at on this trip which seems unkempt. Less than ten other campers here. This COE is really off I-40, so you would really have to be looking for a place for the night in order to come here. We camped at Heyburn Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Springhill Park Campground COE, Barling, Arkansas

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

Very disappointed in the COE Park. Have stayed in several over the years and all have been better kept than this one. Arrived during lunch hour for volunteer attendant. Went to two Park Host RVs and neither would help me. Said I had to wait until lunch was over (1 hr). Drove around looking for suitable sites. Many were too short, most steeply sloped front to back. Park was generally unkept. Many permanent campers, but few passing through. We camped at Springhill Park Campground COE in a Fifth Wheel.
