Four Oaks RV Resort, Four Oaks, North Carolina

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Just an overnight stay on our way from Central Florida to Maryland. Passport America rate is $22.50 plus something called "tourism tax" of $.68, plus tax, which all totaled is $25. Very buggy and lots of gnats made it difficult to work outside during setup of our fifth wheel. But it seemed pretty quiet and our neighbors and other campers we chatted with were very friendly, so inside our camper we go to have some dinner. The first very long freight train of the evening came rumbling through about 40 yards from our site. Then another. And another. We looked at our watches to time the arrival of the next one. We didn't have to wait long - another train came thru within 10 minutes. All this between 7:30 pm and 8:25 PM. Train buffs will LOVE this place! We camped at Four Oaks RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Natchez Trace State Park / Pin Oak Lake, Lexington, Tennessee

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

I bit off the interstate, but a great place to rest, relax, and recharge. Check-in is by phone and cell service is pretty sketchy, so make reservations ahead of time. No WiFi and very limited TV channels unless you have satellite TV. Full hookups all worked very well. We've been on the road for about three months and just needed a place to chill for a few days. Lexington, TN is only 8 miles away and contains any services you may need. We camped at Natchez Trace State Park / Pin Oak Lake in a Fifth Wheel.

Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River Park, West Memphis, Arkansas

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here because of close proximity to Memphis without being in the city. Also liked the fact that the campground was actually on the Mississippi River. That being said, the staff here is all business, no warm and fuzzies here. Not exactly rude, just efficient and dismissive. We only stayed two nights and spent the majority of our time in Memphis.
Campground is close to I-40 and just over the river from Memphis so location was a plus. We camped at Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Started early with breakfast at The Peabody with the absolute best French Press coffee and cheese grits! Then promptly at 11 am, the ducks walk the red carpet to the fountain in the middle of the lobby. The Peabody is a grand old hotel steeped in tradition, and the ducks are an enjoyable part of that history.
Also visited Sun Studios, Graceland and Beale Street. All were enjoyable and worth seeing, but I must say our Peabody experience is what we will remember about Memphis.

Wes Watkins Lake Campground, McLoud, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Nice quiet campground that was rather sparsely inhabited during our visit. No attendants on duty, however the Mcloud PD does patrol the area and insure that the honor system is kept honorable. Decent water and 50 amp service, however, no sewer. We used their bathrooms for showers and used their dump station on the way out. Temps during the day very pleasant for August, and the evenings were cool, so we enjoyed a campfire most nights. No WiFi, but we did get a few decent TV channels with our antenna. Not many services close by, however we enjoyed being unplugged for a few days as we visited with an old high school friend. Would certainly return. We camped at Wes Watkins Lake Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

AOK Camper Park, Amarillo, Texas

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $13.00
Overall Rating:

If you don't expect much, you won't be disappointed. Self check-in, first come, first serve. Other residents of the park will guide you and the maintenance man, if on the premises, will point you in the right direction. There are dogs wandering around but not threatening.

We chose the last site in what was referred to as the new section. 50 amp and water (both worked well) but no sewer. (There is a dump station on site.) No other amenities, but for $13 we were not in a Walmart or truck stop parking lot.

This place served a purpose, easy on/off I-40, cheap and safe. You will hear traffic and trains, but we were too tired to care. We camped at AOK Camper Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Saw Cadillac Ranch and wondered why there was so much hype about it.

Also visited Jack Sizemore's RV Museum (free) and really enjoyed wandering through the old campers. Like a walk down memory lane, kind of hokey, but we enjoyed it.

Otherwise, this was just an overnight stop to grab groceries at Sam's Club and continue eastward.

Enchanted Trails RV Park & Trading Post, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed two nights to see Old Town and historic section of Route 66. We arrived early in the afternoon but the place really fills up in late afternoon as folks stop for an overnight.
Since we were early, we got to enjoy the pool for a couple of hours and as reported in other reviews, the hot tub was not in service. It's my impression that it never works and they just change the excuse.
Perfectly acceptable for a night or two during your travels, but unless you have a reason to be in Albuquerque, I would not say this place is a destination park. Close to I-40 but that is what we look for, so no complaints from about traffic noise. We camped at Enchanted Trails RV Park & Trading Post in a Fifth Wheel.

Go downtown at night and check out the Route 66 Diner on Central Avenue. Love the neon and retro look of the place. Also visit Old Town on the east end of Route 66. Lovely artisan shops, courtyards with live music, and a number of restaurants, mostly Mexican.

La Mesa RV Park, Cortez, Colorado

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

A good base camp and very convenient for the multiple sights in the surrounding area. Staff was very helpful in briefing us on what there was to do in the area as well as recommendations on places to eat and routs to take.

Didn't use the showers or bathrooms but we did use the washer and dryer and both were very clean.

Site was shaded and level, power was consistent and water pressure and quality was very good. Best of all, the WiFi was as good as promised. We camped at La Mesa RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Enjoyed our three day stay at this RV park which was very conveniently located for sightseeing. Our site (114) was level and shaded, office staff was very helpful. They even made a point of warning us about the water pressure to insure we used a regulator. We camped at Spanish Trail RV Park & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Paradise RV and Mobile Home Park, Panguitch, Utah

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Good location for Red Canyon, Bryce, and Cedar Breaks. Also good value for the price. We also met some lovely people who were also staying here who invited us to lunch the first day we arrived and gave us some good pointers about what to see in the area.

That's pretty much all I can say that is complimentary about this place. Pretty much the only interaction with the owners is when they take your money. The rest is up to you and the helpful people that are staying here who help you choose the best place to park your rig. Most sites are not very level and are very tight which puts your neighbor's sewer hookup less than 4 feet from your door. WiFi is so bad they should just say they don't offer it. Kind of sad because, this place could be a gold mine! We camped at Paradise RV and Mobile Home Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Sand Hollow State Park, Hurricane, Utah

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Scenic campground, full hook-ups, clean restrooms and showers with generous sized sites with good amount of space between. Lake area is beautiful as well with many day-use weekend visitors. Also very close to OHV area with ATV rentals available to zoom around the sand dunes.

We were here during monsoon season, and the weather can change in an instant! Of the three days were were here, we watched the storms brewing and got walloped on one of the three. The storms are a mix of wind (red sand) with torrential rain, thunder, and lightening with the added bonus of a rainbow or two! We are estimating the winds were about 30 mph with some stronger gusts. The temperature started at 97 degrees and within a half hour had plummeted to 66 degrees.

Pay attention to the weather! We camped at Sand Hollow State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We were having a cooling issue with our Dodge Diesel 3500 and stopped by K & W Auto & Collision in Hurricane (435-703-6835). The guys there really spoke the language of Dodge Diesel Cummins. They had some pretty tweaked-out trucks of their own, so they knew what they were talking about. Within minutes they had diagnosed the problem and within a couple of hours had us back on our way. Honest, hardworking bunch of guys!

Krazy K RV Park, Camp Verde, Arizona

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

Convenient to Route 17 and PPA accepted which is why we chose this place. Stayed two days and spent very little time in our camper. Convenient to Sedona, Cottonwood, and Jerome, as well as the Montezuma National Monument in Camp Verde.

Visited all the above and came back to our camper only to sleep.

Management was very accommodating, however WiFi not so good. We got our money's worth. We camped at Krazy K RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Don't miss the sights in this area. Montezuma National Monument is a wonder to see, Sedona is awesome, and Jerome, although quirky, is worth visiting.

Do not attempt to drive your RV to Jerome. Road has several S turns and is tricky to navigate in any vehicle larger than a pickup truck.

Phoenix Metro RV Park (55+ park), Phoenix, Arizona

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $19.00
Overall Rating:

Convenient to I-17 without the traffic noise. Near an airport, but all air traffic noted looked small and/or private and was not a bother.

Staff was very helpful making phone reservation and left an envelope with info directing us to our site. Very sparsely populated this time of the year so navigating the park was somewhat easier than it would have been if all sites were in use.

Temperatures were well over 100 degrees so we really enjoyed the pool and for the most part had the place to ourselves.

All permanent residents we encountered were very friendly and welcoming.

We stayed for two nights - the first to visit with a friend and the second to stock up on groceries before we continued north. Convenient shopping within minutes of the RV park.

For $18.50/night PPA rate - it was everything we needed - clean, convenient, and a good value. We camped at Phoenix Metro RV Park (55+ park) in a Fifth Wheel.

Cochise Terrace RV Resort, Benson, Arizona

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $19.00
Overall Rating:

A wonderful place to stay! Staff is great to deal with, the place is so clean, I think they must scrub the streets. Bathrooms are spotless, laundry room is too. We enjoyed the pool and locker room facilities and every person we met here was so nice.
Easy to maneuver, wide streets, large sites, beautiful views, and quiet and safe. We stayed nine days, which is 4 days longer than we planned, simply because it was so pleasant here.
WiFi iffy, but they are working on making it better, it works fine near the pool and in the clubhouses. They also offer a Cable hookup that works great. For the Passport America rate, this place is great. We highly recommend this park and would certainly stay here again. We camped at Cochise Terrace RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Western Sky's RV Park, Vado, New Mexico

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

My review is based on the fact that every place else we checked in the area was more expensive and not as convenient.
Since we have a self contained unit, all we need is water, electric and sewer and a safe place to park. Western Sky is at least that. Rosa is a sweetheart and very pleasant to deal with and, it appears, is single-handedly attempting to resurrect this place. Besides sleeping, we spent very little time here, so we were not looking for a resort setting. We would stay here again because Rosa was so accommodating. We camped at Western Sky's RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

One of our AC units died during our stay which resulted in us having to stay an extra week while we waited for a replacement AC.

Monahans Sandhills State Park, Monahans, Texas

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

Sandhills is a one-of-a-kind campground. We planned an overnight here because it was a mid-way point between stops for us. There is not a bit of shade anywhere, but the dunes and sand make it starkly beautiful. The park ranger was very helpful and suggested site number 12 for us, but also said if we found something else we liked better, to just call the office and let them know we switched sites. Easy to maneuver within the campground, but would probably be difficult if there was a lot of wind drifting the sand.
We'd stay here again. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
