Lake Catherine State Park, Hot Springs, Arkansas

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

This is a lovely spot with lots of shady sites next to a lake. The majority of sites are full hookups, though there are also some with just water and electric. The only problem that kept me from giving it a higher rating is that many of the campsites are very unlevel. We have a 40' motorhome, and we could not level it without getting blocks and chocks out in our reserved site. Luckily we were here in the off season and could move to another spot. However it took some looking before we found one we would fit into easily. A smaller rig or a tandem axle trailer would not have the same issues, and I suspect that is the market identified for this park. Still, the price is right (25% senior discount if you go to the visitor center and ask). Separate parking is available for roads or boats near the sites if you can't fit both in. We camped at Lake Catherine State Park in a Motorhome.

Van Horn RV Park (formerly Van Horn KOA), Van Horn, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Super clean, big sites, good interior roads. This place is a nice spot to stop over. They have a small fenced dog park and a cute playground that were nice too. The little cafe at the campground had decent food for a reasonable rate. This will definitely be on my list of preferred overnight stops. We camped at Van Horn RV Park (formerly Van Horn KOA) in a Motorhome.

Benson KOA, Benson, Arizona

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

This is an older KOA, and it shows. The place is very clean and quiet though. The sites are pretty short, and some rigs bigger than ours had trouble staying in their site. The interior roads are tight but doable for a big rig, just watch your real wheels. The biggest issue was the electrical system. It was cold when we were here, lows in the low 30s, and lots of rigs were obviously using their heat pumps of electrical heaters. Our EMS took us off line a number of times due to brownout conditions. If it did this with heaters, I would assume an issue could also occur with air conditioning in the summer. We camped at Benson KOA in a Motorhome.

White Tank Regional Park, Waddell, Arizona

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

I won't disagree with the many good reviews of this gorgeous park. Most sites are widely separated, though the ones on the interior of the loop are closer than those on the outside. The park attendants even rake the site after the occupant leaves, so the place is spotless. However some of the sites are very unlevel. We were in 35, and it took 6" of blocks plus maximumeztension of our levelers to get ourselves level. Also note the Verizon data service here is really quite poor. We camped at White Tank Regional Park in a Motorhome.

Quail Run RV Park, Quartzsite, Arizona

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This is an amazingly quiet campground. It is on the north end of town so outside the craziness that is Quartzsite during the RV season. The site we got was designated for overnights, and it was tight for my four slide 40' coach. The guy "directing" me was miserable at his job, but luckily my husband was much better and got in the site correctly. The seasonal sites are bigger and much nicer, but ours was ok for a 2 night stop over to do laundry and clean up,after 4 lovely weeks boondocking. Note they have only a paid Tengo internet which I have had bad luck with in the past. We were able to get decent (not good) access with our Verizon jetpack. No cable either, but this park is the definition of "satellite friendly" with only a few small trees. The site is well packed gravel with a small concrete patio right smack dab in the middle of it which complicated the parking. We camped at Quail Run RV Park in a Motorhome.

Meramec Springs Country Store and RV Park, Saint James, Missouri

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

First thing to note is our motorhome is 40'. They said we would have no problems getting into our spot; they were wrong. Very right turns, trees with low hanging branches, sites so small that other campers extended into the (already narrow) roadways. We finally got ourselves into the site, but it took a lot of back and forth work. Luckily we didn't leave until a weekday when the place was mostly empty since I had to got through the edges of other sites to get out. The road noise was also more than I anticipated. It wasn't heavily traveled, but it had enough traffic to make it very noticeable in our site. If you have a small unit and don't mind being crammed in like a sardine without enough room to open your awning, this would be fine. For us, it was a bad choice. We already had plans in the area or we would have left. We certainly won't go back. We camped at Meramec Springs Country Store and RV Park in a Motorhome.

Red Bay RV Park, Red Bay, Alabama

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This is a parking lot with gravel sites and full 50 amp hookups. It is really just an overflow for the Tiffin Service Center in town, but it is clean, easy to get in and out, and the utilities were well positioned and worked perfectly. All sites are back in, but roomy. It is a bit out of town and very quiet. It was hard to rate. For what it advertises itself - a parking lot - it is very nice. Then again, it is a parking lot. We camped at Red Bay RV Park in a Motorhome.

This place actually has bigger sites than the Tiffin Service Center, so if you are waiting for non-warranty work you might be better off doing it here. On,y warranty work qualifies you for a free site at the Tiffin campground.

Big Woods Lake Campground, Cedar Falls, Iowa

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This is a lovely county park situated on a small lake, just off Hwy 218 north of Cedar Falls. The sites are roomy with hard packed gravel for the full hook up sites. There are also grassy sites for tents or other units not using hookups. I would give it a solid 9 but the highway noise and the frequent trains right at the edge of the campground make it a less pleasant experience. It is still worth the low cost for full hookup 30\50 amp sites if you don't wake up easily. The campground is pretty new so the trees are very small and provide no shade. Lots of grass though. We were here during a period of prolonged rain, and the mosquitoes ate us alive. Bring repellent if you come during wet periods. Make sure your GPS routes you to the campground, not Big Woods Lake Park. The park is on the other side of the lake, and it is tedious to get to the campground from there. Take the Lone Tree Road exit off Hwy 218 and follow the signs. We camped at Big Woods Lake Campground in a Motorhome.

Heritage Acres RV Park, Tuscumbia, Alabama

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

This is a basic campground with most sites seemingly occupied by long term residents. It is clean, neat, and handy to the highway. The sites are large with small patches of grass next to the gravel sites. No trees, but the electric, water, and sewer worked well. The hookups in our pull thru site were toward the back so we needed an extra water hose. Amazingly quiet. We camped at Heritage Acres RV Park in a Motorhome.

Gorgeous site with lots of room. Very quiet. Very poor cell service, though we got a bar or two of 3G with our cell booster. The provided WiFi was pretty poor, but that was the only thing wrong. We camped at Lake Mead Recreational Area - Willow Beach in a Motorhome.

Mountain View RV Park, Huachuca City, Arizona

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This is a very nice place for long term residents, but not nearly as nice for short term. The short timers are out in sites back to back in an area that used to be used for park models (now removed). This means the utilities are in an odd spot. The first site they tried to put us in had the sewer line in the middle of the site, and the manager calmly said we could just climb under the trailer to connect. We said absolutely not, and she finally put us "in the only available site". That site did not have room to park the truck which had to go into overflow area due to landscaping. The entire time we were there other sites were available including a pull through. Laundry was very nice, and the place was very quiet though. We camped at Mountain View RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Golden Shores RV Park, Topock, Arizona

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

This is an older park that is showing its age. The facilities are barely average, but the people are very welcoming and nice. Everything is spotless too. There is a small clubhouse and a nice laundry (2 washers, 2 dryers). Their WiFi wasn't very good in our site, but Verizon gave me good data service. The price shown is the weekly discounted rate, $150 a week. We camped at Golden Shores RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Slip Bluff Campground, Davis City, Iowa

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

A lovely little park in Iowa close to the Missouri border. Lots of trees, a small fishing lake, ponds, and hiking trails. On a Friday night in mid October there were 3 campers here, though I bet it is more popular in the summer. The sites are long, but there are trees that make getting the right angle in a back in or pull through rather challenging. We managed it though, and we were rewarded with a nice patio area, fire pit, and picnic table. The sites were fairly level. Good Verizon cell service, but no broadcast TV available. We didn't put out the satellite for the one night stay. We camped at Slip Bluff Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Indian Creek COE, Monroe City, Missouri

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $9.00
Overall Rating:

An absolutely gorgeous campground with huge, widely separated sites. Lots of shade, and many of the asphalt pads are find for big rigs when toad is unhitched. The sites are very unlevel though, most sloping down significantly from the road. We were there in October and it was very quiet, but I would imagine it is very busy in the summer. Only a very few sites have a water view, and the lake it a good walk from the campground. All the sites have electric, and a few have sewer and water also. We had an electric only sites, but the dump station was close and convenient. We camped at Indian Creek COE in a Travel Trailer.

Pulltite Campground, Salem, Missouri

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $9.00
Overall Rating:

This is a lovely rustic campground in a beautiful area along the Current River. There are flush toilets and sort of warm showers though we didn't use them. The sites are grass with occasional patches of sand, and many have nice shade. Surprisingly for a rustic, NPS campground, many of the sites are big enough for large trailers and 5th wheels. A few sites would be ok for motorhomes too. Be aware of trees as you get into your site though. The campsites generally require a lot of leveling, but the end result is worth it. Note the campground fills completely during the summer boating season, and it fills weekends even in the spring and fall so reservations should be used if you really want to stay here. We like to spend a week here each fall. No cell service, no satellite view since you are in a deep river valley. We camped at Pulltite Campground in a Travel Trailer.
