Perrys RV Park and Tent Campground, Red Lodge, Montana

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $39.00
Overall Rating:

We were given a very, very small space with nary the room to even walk around our trailer in the lower area of this park for a 3-night stay. The park itself is quite nice with some sites backing up to a wonderful mountain stream. Most are of a very reasonable size with picnic tables and fire rings and plenty of room for lawn chairs, etc. Ours was the exception. To be fair, I think we were given the site we had as a last minute accommodation to our need to stay 3 nights instead of 2--or at least I am willing to give the owners that excuse. We will definitely stay here again when in the area, making sure to be more specific as to the size of space we would like to have. The restrooms and shower rooms were great, and the location of the park, right next to the Beartooth Highway, just west of the town of Red Lodge is very convenient. We camped at Perrys RV Park and Tent Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Don't miss visiting Bear Creek, Montana--an old mining town and today almost a ghost town about 7 miles to the east of Red Lodge on Highway 308--to attend the Pig Races and have a wonderful Prime Steak Dinner at the Bear Creek Saloon. Reservations required on Thurs., Fri., Sat. and Sun. evenings. Our evening there was the highlight of our 6 week vacation. Great food. Great fun. Great environment. Ask the RV Park owners for their phone number to make reservations.

Peter D's RV Park, Sheridan, Wyoming

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

Peter D's excelled in its location (close to Interstate), superb cleanliness, and friendliness (free veggies from his wife's garden) and overall value. There was not a weed or piece of trash in sight. The bathrooms and showers were amazing. The only negative we could identify was the narrowness of the sites. Many big rigs with multiple slides using the park yielding very little walk space between rigs--not even enough to set out lawn chairs in most cases. Otherwise, all of Peter's rules for parking, caring for grass, etc. have paid off in the form of a very neat, attractive park easy to get into and out of and at a reasonable price for a full service RV park. We camped at Peter D's RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

We enjoyed visiting the Trails End Historic Site--former home of large Wyoming Cattle Baron, banker and State Senator and Governor. Peter D's would also make a good base for visiting the Custer Battlefield to the north of Sheridan and exploring the Big Horn mountains to the west.

Oakland Mills - South Shore, Mount Pleasant, Iowa

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

Oakland Mills is a county park supervised by the local Conservation Department. The South Shore unit on on the banks of the Skunk River and does flood in some situations. Our campsite included electricity (30A) and a water hookup. Needed an extension cord to reach power outlet. We backed up to the river. Campsites were of a reasonable size, were clean from weeds and trash and at $15 per night for residents provide a good value. The campground was nearly full on the weekend and were quiet after dark. There were numerous people driving into the park to fish from an abandoned power dam and there is a nice walking path/bridge across the river with a very popular small restaurant just across the bridge. The park appeared to be safe and there were a number of young families spending the weekend at the park. We found the campground to be adequate for an overnight visit IF your unit is self-contained. The restrooms and shower house were some distance from the campsites, were open to the general public, and certainly weren't very well kept or well lit. We were in town for our Granddaughter's wedding for a 2-night stay and found the campground to be adequate for our purposes. The campground is just a few miles from intersection of US Route 34 and Route 218. Very convenient to get to. We camped at Oakland Mills - South Shore in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Visited Historic Front Street and Boot Hill. Very disappointing==as numerous shops were closed and all "entertainment" events had been shut down the end of Aug. Yet--we were still charged reg. entrance fee! The city fathers of Dodge City need to come up with some new tourist attractions--as most people no longer remember Marshall Dillon and Miss Kitty and the existing attractions are really showing their age.

Tips for other Campers:

Park is just a few miles from Council Grove, home to several Santa Fe Trail historic sites and home to the Hayes House--one of the oldest restaurants west of the Mississippi river. However, our Friday evening meal there certainly did not live up to the long standing reputation of the Hays House.Don't miss driving about 15 mi. south to visit the Cottonwood Falls Ranch and Tall Grass Prairie area. Beautiful old stone barn and house open for tours, along with many trails through the authentic tall grass prairie. The town of Cottonwood Falls, just a few miles south is also a great place to visit.

Lake of the Ozarks State Park, Kaiser, Missouri

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

We returned to this great MO state park for a 4 day stay in mid-June. Found the park to be very clean and busier than ever. Reservations are a must if you want electric. Or a site near the lake. Nice long, near level sites with plenty of room to relax under the many shade trees. No sites with water and sewer. Very clean and well kept shower rooms and bathrooms. Nice playgrounds. Great family spot. We camped at Lake of the Ozarks State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Iowa State Fairgrounds, Des Moines, Iowa

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Park is large, very hilly and heavily shaded. Park needed to be mowed. Obviously, doesn't seem to be very well cared for until Fair Time. Very hard to find a level spot. Some sites have sewer, as well as water and elec. Sites are not well marked. We stayed here while attending the National Antique Truck Association show. Price was higher for this event than is charged during the normal camping season. If you are simply looking for an overnight spot--probably would not recommend this site. But, if you are attending an event on the fairgrounds, it is convenient to be nearby. We camped at Iowa State Fairgrounds in a Travel Trailer.

Hickory Hill Campground, Secor, Illinois

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

Large RV Park, nearly filled with full-timers, many of whom have made significant additions to their sites. Clean grounds. Heavily wooded. Helpful, friendly staff. That said, BEWARE as a short term visitor, you will likely be placed on the east side of the RV park, just across the border with an actively used, busy shooting range with lots and lots of noise until nearly pitch dark. If you have a dog who hates noise, or are looking for a peaceful evening of enjoying nature--FORGET ABOUT IT! Such a shame to have noisy gun lovers destroy what would otherwise be a very nice RV Park. We camped at Hickory Hill Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Toledo East / Stony Ridge KOA, Perrysburg, Ohio

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

Not quite up to normal KOA expectations. Sites were gravel and many needed a new application of gravel. Entire park was level--interior roads pocked with mud holes. Perhaps later in the summer, when rainy season subsides, would be a more pleasant environment. Staff were friendly an helpful. Park about half-full. Satisfactory for an overnight stay. Sites big enough that we didn't have to un-hook. We camped at Toledo East / Stony Ridge KOA in a Travel Trailer.

AA Royal Motel & Campground, North Tonawanda, New York

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

Park is quite basic but all one really needs for an overnight visit to Niagara Falls. Very convenient to the falls. Helpful park attendant. We were given a site at the back of the park which was relatively quiet regarding street noise. RV Park is behind a motel that appears to be rather dated and run down. Park appeared to be busier than motel and provided basic services for two adults. No playground, pool or other entertainment for children. Excellent park-albeit a bit expensive. Immaculate, landscaped grounds, level sites that can be a bit of a challenge to get into with larger rigs. We stayed on a beautiful site at the top of the park. Great views of nearby Amish farms and lots of large shade trees. Extremely peaceful and relaxing. Made a perfect base for two days of exploring the nearby countryside. Overall Rating:

Very good, large RV Park conveniently located to Gettysburg Battlefield and Visitor's Center. Lots of shade. Flat. Large enough for most RV's with adequate space between sites. Management team led us to our site and assisted in set up. Our site was near a small stream rolling along side the campground. Very peaceful and pretty, considering we were in a very large park. Tips for other Campers:

RV Park is on SW side of downtown Gettysburg. Streets in and through Gettysburg are very busy, crowded and somewhat difficult to navigate with an RV. Seek directions that avoids the downtown area if possible. Park is well located for exploring the battlefield and the Eisenhower Farm. Allow at least 2/3 of a day and go to Eisenhower Farm if at all possible. Quite interesting. National Park service provides a shuttle bus from Visitor's Center to the farm, for a small fee.
