Castaic Lake RV Park, Castaic, California

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

We enjoyed the pool and Jacuzzi during our stay. The bathrooms and showers were great, as they were recently upgraded, clean and large. However, they close the bathrooms at night and open them back up in the morning. (Not good for late night bathroom runs while our bathroom is being refurbished).

Most of the people were fulltimers living there, with what appeared to be only a handful of sites available for camping. Many of the sites looked 'ghetto', dirty, junky, and messy with broken umbrellas, old furniture and lots of junk laying around. I was a bit uncomfortable. There wasn't much to do besides swim. We tried going for a walk, but there wasn't anything to see or do (besides walking across the street to the ARCO gas station). The pictures on the website made it look much nicer than it really was. Castaic Lake was not in walking distance, however the freeway was.

The on-site store was good sized and well stocked with a variety of supplies and necessities. The staff was friendly and very helpful. Someone patrolled the grounds in a golf cart regularly.

There was no built in campfire ring or place to cook outdoors, but they did provide a portable fire ring and brought it to our site. The camp sites were very close together so there wasn't much room between us and the guy next door to enjoy our campfire and meals outside. We camped at Castaic Lake RV Park in a Motorhome.

Gas is nearby. The freeway is nearby. There is a small market across the street with groceries and vegetables if you need to supplement your supplies.

Lilac Oaks Campground, Valley Center, California

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed for the July 4th weekend and had a great time. The staff was polite and responsive. The bathrooms were clean enough. There were 3 showers for the women but small with no benches or ledges for your things.

The pool was clean and refreshing. We had electricity and water at the campsite, but not septic.

When we made our reservations they said we had to bring our own fire pit, but when we got there, they had put one on our site. Then on the second day they installed a BBQ for cooking near our picnic table, which was nice as we did most of our cooking outdoors.

The only problem we had was with campers next to us. A large party on several sites, they were loud, drinking and using foul language late into the night. Despite having "quiet hour" at 10 PM, no one did a thing, as the office was closed. So we were up late, trying to enjoy our own fire, but had to listen to that late into the night. We especially didn't appreciate our young boys having to endure that kind of language, the topics, etc.

We complained the next day. They were given a warning. We were given a phone number to call/text if it happened again w the promise they'd be 'escorted' out. However the next night it happened again, lasting well past 3 AM. I texted the number they gave us at 1 AM, but once again no enforcement.

We complained the next day and they said they didn't have anyone to patrol the campgrounds at night or enforce the rules because their security guard wanted 40 hours (full time work) but they didn't have a need for that. I asked why they didn't have someone just for the holiday weekend.

All in all, it was a good time despite the lack of sleep due to the lack of enforcement of the rules. We camped at Lilac Oaks Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a small, on-site store for ice, firewood, candy for the kids, etc. However, if you need anything more than that there is a larger store about 2 miles away. The tent sites were very well shaded, but not near the lake/pond like we were.
