Kirtland AFB FamCamp , Kirtland AFB, New Mexico

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

We've been coming here every few years for 18 years or so and the same manager has been here all this time. We have 4 words for her - "It's time to retire." I'll refrain from specifics. That said, this place has almost tripled in size since our first years. They now seem to use a 30 day max stay and it is pretty full. There is a younger maintenance fellow taking care of some things. The older section is the most pleasant looking and the newer section has the most spacious sites. Wind seems more an issue in the new section. Watch your awning. Half the rigs have doors facing west, too. Ugh. No WiFi anymore but laundry room has been upgraded. All gates have changed in configuration from a few years ago. We used to use Eubanks gate nearby, but all gates have been narrowed and it is tight. Truman is the best bet now- it is a bit wider and has fewer obstacles. Check for open and close times. Those have changed greatly too. This is a busy base which is good to see. Commissary and BX area are good. There are Rec activities everyone can participate in. The golf course needs more TLC but is okay. It's restaurant is a busy place for breakfast and lunch, too. A great attraction is the Nuclear Energy Museum north several blocks on Eubanks. Very interesting. We camped at Kirtland AFB FamCamp in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit the National Museum of Nuclear Science, a short drive North on Eubanks. It's a Smithsonian museum and excellent. Allow 2 or more hours. Further N on Eubanks you'll find many favorite "box" stores. Recommend Gardunos in old town or Los Cuates for New Mexico / Mexican food. Smother in Green Chile....the best.

Nice place. We've stayed many times. Some traffic noise from 63. Sites are narrow but long enough for TT and truck at an angle. Pretty trees provide shade. We will stay again. We camped at Cottonwoods RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

St. Louis RV Park, St. Louis, Missouri

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $52.00
Overall Rating:

Surprising location close to city. Was quiet at night though, and much appreciated. It is basically a parking lot but sites are spacious. They are not particularly level. Restrooms and showers were clean and spacious also. Staff was very helpful. We were able to stay hooked up and walked across the street to a c-store at a gas station for a basic we had forgotten. We camped at St. Louis RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Our pull thru, number 2 was level and long. It had a dip as we entered however and our load leveling hitch drug a bit. There were a few OTA channels. Very shaded. Would stay again We camped at High Springs Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Made visiting Graceland a breeze. Good level sites a bit longer than our truck/tt combination. Satellite was easy and OTA was good. Used our own Verizon mifi w good signal. From Graceland you can get a free shuttle to Beale St etc. We camped at Graceland RV Park & Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Camp Lakewood Campground & RV Park, Effingham, Illinois

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $39.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed one night in a 50 amp pull thru. It was difficult to see site signs and the layout seems odd, but it made more sense when I walked around. The cable was okay and essential because it's doubtful one could find a satellite signal. We camped at Camp Lakewood Campground & RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Madison KOA, De Forest, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

This park was clean and run very efficiently. We didn't use the amenities but observed others enjoying what it has to offer. The sites were close and a bit short but all easy entry and exit. Ran 2 air conditioners on a very hot day, and when a big motor home pulled in that caused a whole row an electrical problem they were quick to fix it. They seemed to fill up on a Friday night. We camped at Madison KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Little Sand Bay Recreation Area, Bayfield, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This park was about 5 miles down a county road off Hwy 13. It is operated by the town of Russell. We almost didn't check it out, but we are very glad we did. All sites are electric only. Lake Superior is walking distance and visible from most sites which we loved. Sites are situated seemingly in a haphazard way, but the electric pedestals are shared by two sites making the spacing odd at times. Our spot was just long enough for us without unhooking, but the biggest motorhomes might struggle here. We had no internet or TV which also made it special - we had forgotten how nice it is being "unhooked." We were there midweek. Weekends require reservations I think. We camped at Little Sand Bay Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Camp Itasca, Park Rapids, Minnesota

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This park has many seasonal sites which seem packed in closely, perhaps because of the extra paraphernalia they tend to accumulate. We, however, had a roomy back-in with W/E near the office. Restrooms are dated and the dump station was in an awkward location, but otherwise we were pleased with choosing this park that is basically in the wilderness. The park is very close to the north entrance of the Itasca state park. The headwaters attraction is worthwhile and fun. We also used our spot as a take off point for touristy Bemidgi, Park Rapids, and Detroit Lakes, all about 30 miles away in different directions. We camped at Camp Itasca in a Travel Trailer.

Grand Forks Campground, Grand Forks, North Dakota

This place is fine. It has lots of level pull through sites and a good laundry. Not fancy like it's glory days as a KOA, but it definitely is a good stopover place. Recommend. We camped at Grand Forks Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Minot Air Force Base FamCamp (Military FamCamp), Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed in site 2, a 50 amp site. Some are only 30 amp. All concrete pads are about 30 feet long and unless very small you'll be unhooking. Parking is down the street. The base is small and pleasant with a very good commissary. (Closed Mondays). These are first come first serve sites with check-in at outdoor rec office. Minot was about 12 miles south on 83 and has an interesting and beautiful Scandinavian park near the downtown area. We camped at Minot Air Force Base FamCamp (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Red Trail Campground, Medora, North Dakota

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

This place is hard to rate. The sites themselves are fine, some better than others perhaps. (One review here about tight spots sounds like the park down the road, not this one.) The staff is friendly enough, and they have developed a parking system that works pretty well for them during busy season. We stayed in a back to back E/W site that required someone to tell us exactly where to put our rig so there would be room for those backing in behind us. There is plenty of room to get it done. The park itself needs some TLC - just basic stuff like cleaning and paint! A remodel here or there would be good too. They have a captive audience because of their location, and possibly that interferes with their motivation to make the place visually more appealing. We enjoyed the shows and Medora so much that the state of the campground seemed a minor inconvenience. We would stay here again. We camped at Red Trail Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Buy groceries on the way. RV Park is walking distance to town. Medora Musical and Gospel Brunch were well worth the cost. Cowboy Hall of Fame and Museum is very good. Bully Pulpit Golf Course had some fun and particularly scenic holes on the back 9. Restaurants abound - Ice cream too!

Governors' RV Park and Campground, Casselton, North Dakota

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

About 19 Miles W. of Fargo, we made this our 2 night stop to see the area. Our site was pull through with the sewer connection too tall to be usable. We had to use the dump station. Otherwise, the place was fine. Level, gravel, quiet. The hotel next door had lots of amenities and a good breakfast in the restaurant. We camped at Governors' RV Park and Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Fargo Visitor Center was interesting. If you haven't been in one before, Scheels sporting goods was fun with its inside Ferris wheel and amazing array of stuff. Moorhead, MN across the river from Fargo has a good Scandinavian museum, Hjemkomst Center, with a very interesting story about a Viking ship sailing from MN to Norway in 1982, a stave church, and other Scandinavian and WWI exhibits.
