Charlestown State Park, Charlestown, Indiana

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is a State Park not far from Louisville, KY. We did not spend a lot of time in the park as we were visiting family in Louisville. The sites were fine and spaced out nicely. Ours was a bit short and we had to drive up into the site to park our tow vehicle. We camped at Charlestown State Park in a Travel Trailer.

White River Campground, Cicero, Indiana

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is a gem! We parked right on the river and had full hookups. The only reason I did not give the park a 10 is that we had to park our tow vehicle across the road, but that was still very close. The host was super nice. Our lab enjoyed swimming in the river and our neighbors had been paddle boarding and kayaking in the river. Very nice. The concrete pads were a surprise in a county park. We could not have been more pleased. We have family in the Indianapolis area, and will definitely stay here again! We camped at White River Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Northpoint Shores RV Resort, New Baltimore, Michigan

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $64.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed at Northpoint Shores for 3 nights and drove down two days to Dearborn to tour the Ford Museums. We could have found a closer campground, but thought that Northpoint Shores would be very nice. And most aspects of it are nice. The campground is immaculate. Laundry area and rest rooms are new and impeccably clean. There is a gas powered "camp fire" if you can find someone who knows who to start it. The view of St. Clare Lake is lovely! But for the price per night I was expecting more. The campsites are very short and close together. The tow vehicles have to park on the driveway around the campground and are in the way when anyone pulls their rigs in or out of neighboring sites. Dogs are not allowed in the common area near the lake. The whole campground probably does not take up two acres. What is there is very nice; but it is shoehorned in and a little less than might be expected for the price. We camped at Northpoint Shores RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Roberts Landing Campground, Cheboygan, Michigan

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

The best thing about Roberts Landing was the location on Lake Huron. This is a small campground. We stayed after Labor Day so there were not many campers there and we had a great view of the lake. The woman who owns the campground was very helpful in letting us put our camper where we wanted seeing, as we were not in anyone else's way. The woman told me she has 50 sites. While we were there, there were maybe 10 other campers tops. I cannot imagine how packed it would be with 50 set ups, though many would be tents. The only problem we had was with the dump station. You have to drive straight in and then back out where you are finished. A little strange, but it worked. We camped at Roberts Landing Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Soo Locks Campground, Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

We made last minute reservations at Soo Locks Campground when we realized we had time for a visit to Sault Ste. Marie. This park is a little non-conventional, but it works. The first three lines of campers closest to the water are in a sort of parking lot, with curbs and 12 feet of a grass island dividing the rows where the picnic tables go. The sites are not roomy. As one reviewer said, you are there to see the ships go by, not spread out. We camped in site 25. We were not down on the water, but the first line of campers up on the hill can still see the river, and we would walk down to the water when we heard or saw a ship coming. There is a wonderful feeling of camaraderie in the campground as we all enjoyed the big ships together. Also there is a game room and free coffee all day in the office and little camp store. Folks worked puzzles in there and visited. It was very nice. We camped at Soo Locks Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Jack Pine Lodge Campground, Manistique, Michigan

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed at Jack Pine Lodge Campground for two nights while visiting the Pictured Rocks National Coastline in Munising, MI. The campground was clean and the hosts were very friendly and helpful. The ground in that part of the UP is sandy, and it was obvious that the campsite had been swept and cleaned before our arrival. I used the laundry facilities while at Jack Pine; everything was clean and worked well. The campground is not close to any shopping area, but they had a camp store with milk, eggs and several other things that might be needed. Very helpful! The only thing that was a little disappointing was the dog park. A couple of small dogs would be okay in the pen created by metal posts and plastic netting. It was not big enough for a large dog to work off any steam. However, there were some walking areas where the grass had been mowed short out around the campsite areas for walking. It was almost 30 minutes from the campground to Munising. We camped at Jack Pine Lodge Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The Pictured Rocks National Coast Line is absolutely gorgeous. Be sure to take the boat tour from Munising. While some folks like hiking and/or driving along the shore, the only way to really see the cliffs and rocks is from the water. Also, our experience on the UP is that things are very spread out and unless you are in a town, you will not see many small shops or groceries along the roadside. Make sure to buy what you need when you are in a town!

Overall Rating:

We stayed at the Elkhart Campground for two nights. We were very pleased with the campground. It is very clean. The campsites are a bit close to each others, but the campground was not packed full while we were there. Our dog loved the HUGE dog park. We enjoyed walking around the grounds and felt that the Elkhart Campground was a good value. We will stay there again if we are in the Elkhart area. Wild Cherry Resort, Lake Leelanau, Michigan

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $64.00
Overall Rating:

This is a gorgeous campground! We loved our stay here and, even though the price is more than many, we felt we received a quality place to camp. First of all, the sites are very roomy. All RV sites are full hookup. There are concrete pads, picnic tables and fire pits. Our trash was picked up every day and we were brought two local newspapers each morning. There are no restrooms for RV campers, but the clear expanse of land is part of the beauty of the layout. We used our bath facilities in our camper with no problem. By September, summer is cooling off on the Leelanau Peninsula. It may be that in July and August, we would have wished for more shade trees (Many are planted and will grow!), but we were very comfortable without shade. There are ponds with fountains in them. The grounds are meticulously manicured. The place is great for walking and being outside. There is also a driving range up on the hill where we enjoyed running our Labrador Retriever when no one else was around. We loved it here and would go back in a heartbeat! We camped at Wild Cherry Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Three Springs Campground, Corinth, Kentucky

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

This is small park that is very sufficient for camping. It is not fancy, but it it is very clean. The sites are grass with some gravel. The women who helped us get registered also made sure we got into the site. She was very nice. The bathrooms show signs of having been remodeled. We were there at the end of Labor Day weekend and there were many tent campers in another part of the park who used the restrooms, so things were a bit crowded there, but the facilities were kept very clean throughout our visit. There were also signs that the owners are expanding the campground and making improvements. It is very convenient to the Creation Museum Arc Encounter and we would stay here again to visit that. The only trouble we had was that those using the dump station also block the exit to the campground. This was the case the morning we left. The campers involved worked together to help move things along and work things out. A wider exit on that side of the drive would be helpful. There is a small stream that runs through the campground. It was a bit messy and mucked up with grass, but probably okay for kids to play in. We camped at Three Springs Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Buck Hill Campground, Plumtree, North Carolina

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

We camped at Buck Hill Campground for 3 nights with friends. We thought the campground was delightful. The majority of the sites are rented full time by retired/semi-retired seasonal campers, but to a person they were friendly, welcoming and helpful. Most keep gardens around their campers. It was lovely! This is not a rustic place at all, but was very relaxing and pleasant. There are not a lot of campsites available on the Toe River, but for sure ask for one if you are interested. The friends with whom we camped had a toy hauler with a patio and we thoroughly enjoyed sitting out listening to the sound of the river. We camped at a grassy, shady site across from them. Each site has a concrete pad and picnic table as well as a fire pit. Most sites in the campground had some shade. The whole place is neat as a pin. At the end of the main camp road there is access to a grassy area on the river bank. Our lab had the time of his life swimming in the river. There is a place with parking up river from the campground where tubers and kayaks can put in and float downriver to this grassy area. The campground is on a country road that has intermittent traffic. All was quiet at night. We found the owners of the campground to be very nice. If you choose to reserve a spot here, procure the number of the site before you arrive. When we arrived we had a few moments of confusion figuring out what we should do and where we should set up. But the seasonal campers knew how to contact the owner and she quickly came to help us out. We enjoyed a trip to Linville Falls, about 30 minutes away. There is a moderate hike to the falls. We would enjoy camping at Buck Hill again. It also looked like a great place to spend some retirement days! We camped at Buck Hill Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Virginia Beach KOA, Virginia Beach, Virginia

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $82.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed at this KOA at the last minute. I have avoided these large "parking lot" style campgrounds up to now. But this campground had bigger sites than I expected and many amenities for children and families. Of course we paid more to be this close to a major beach, but our destinations were close by, and we spent very little time driving once we got into VA Beach. There is a city shuttle that stops at KOA and takes campers to the beach and other attractions in VA Beach. Activities at the campground included 2 pools, a jumping pad, an inflatable slide, ping pong, life size chess game, large tricycles and golf carts for rent, 2 playgrounds, basketball, horseshoes and other games. Back in the middle center section (around the 120's) there was a seedy area with a camper or two that looked permanent and very run down. Other than that, things were clean and appeared well cared for. There were a lot of people there, yes; but folks were having fun. I would stay there again. We camped at Virginia Beach KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Walnut Hills Campground (formerly Staunton / Walnut Hills KOA), Staunton, Virginia

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful park. We stayed here only one night on our way home from an extensive camping trip, but we would gladly have stayed longer. The people in the office were very helpful and, when we asked to upgrade to another longer site so that we did not have to unhook, they were very accommodating. We walked around the campground in the evening and were very impressed with most of the sites. The sites up on the hill, 52 through 86, are lovely and the Patio Sites have patio swings as well as paving. There is nice shade up there also. Sites 24 through 33 and 87 through 98 by the lake are also very nice. T28 is a beautifully secluded tent site! We would have been disappointed to be assigned sites 107 through 111. All five of those sites have a steep bank out the camper door and very little flat area around the camper. For someone who just wants to sit outside their door, that might work well, but if there are more people who would like to sit together, pets, or children who need a little space, those sites would be a poor choice. We were in site 88, which has a retaining wall and lots of grass below. That was a lot better. Sites 99 through 126 are in a converted field. They are all pull through sites and would be great for folks travelling through, but during the hot months the only shady relief in that area is on the backside of sites 99 through 106. The pool and playground make this place very kid friendly, and several families seemed to be enjoying fishing in the lake. We camped at Walnut Hills Campground (formerly Staunton / Walnut Hills KOA) in a Travel Trailer.

Northwest River Park Campground, Chesapeake, Virginia

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

We made reservations at this park. We did arrive to camp there, but some of our plans had changed since reserving, and we realized we were further from VA Beach than we had hoped. We might have stayed at Northwest anyway, but then we discovered that there were only about 2 spigots of water for each 4 campsites. Since we were already not feeling positive about the location (our fault completely, NOT the park's fault) we decided to call another campground in VA Beach and were able to camp there instead. This camp seemed very nice and the people working there were helpful. We have no gripe with the camp EXCEPT that, upon making reservations, it should be made clear that each site does not have it's own water spigot. In our case we would have had to run a hose through someone else's site to fill up each day or so. We camped at Northwest River Park Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Colonial Pines Campground at Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center, Toano, Virginia

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center has camps for children and provides space for groups to worship, and for anyone to have a time of retreat and relaxation. While this is true, the campground is open to all and you may come and go as you like. The campground is separated from the area where the children are playing while at camp and is very quiet. There is a pool on site that is open to those camping there. The campground is very wooded and nice. The sites are not large, but are separated nicely from each other. We drove at least 20 minutes to get to Historic Willaimsburg, but did not mind being out of the tangle of roads around the more tourist oriented area. The people at Williamsburg Retreat Center are VERY helpful. We ran late arriving and they called us to make sure we knew where to find the papers with instructions, campsite information, and helpful phone numbers upon our arrival. They also shared with us very helpful information concerning visiting Williamsburg and the other attractions. Island Resort Family Campground & RV Park, Newark, Maryland

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $70.00
Overall Rating:

Island Resort Campground is a large campground, but sites are well spaced out for the most part. I think some of the sites would be more pleasant than others. In general the setting is lovely! We were there during the not part of summer, so I particularly noticed which sites had some shade and which sites did not. The "N" sites, N1 through N31, are in an area with no shade. Some of those sites do have concrete patios. They seemed close together to me as we rode around. Sites 1 through 17 are beside the lake. Beginning with #7 there are large evergreen trees between the sites and the lake. The trees give shade in the mornings, and can be a shady space for fishing or playing at any time of day. Spaces 94, 95, and 96 were tucked in among some trees. Site 23 through 30 have young trees beside each site that did provide some shade and will continue to do more as the trees grow. The river bank on that side is very steep. Sites 73 through 93 are prime as they have large evergreen trees that give great shade in the afternoons and all day if you are on the lake. 31 through 59 are out in the open. The area there on that side of the lake houses several more permanent campers with PVC sewer lines, etc. Pool and lake swimming facility are great at Island Resort. The lake is lovely and great for kayaking. Kids and adults alike enjoy riding bikes around the area. There is nothing real close to this park, but for campers looking for a quiet, away campground, with a day at Assateague as an option, this is a great option. We camped at Island Resort Family Campground & RV Park in a Travel Trailer.
