About Racer and Friend

Retired journalist...retired environmental specialist...retired government environmental regulator...retired truck and motorcoach operator (2 million safe driver miles)...retired auto mechanic. (Not in that order). Whew. No wonder I'm tired. But not worn out. My lovely wife (also retired) and I are embarking on our first major RVer/Truck Camper expedition. Found this website thanks to a veteran Truck Camper, who said this was the only one he needed. I think I see why.

Lamplight Lane RV Resort at Glen Oaks (formerly Glen Oaks RV Park), Waynesville, Missouri

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Owners were extremely friendly and accommodating. A small park, located close to I-44 but traffic noise was not an issue. Another yearly stop for us from now on. We camped at Lamplight Lane RV Resort at Glen Oaks (formerly Glen Oaks RV Park) in a Motorhome.

Fowler Park, Terre Haute, Indiana

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

A beautiful respite and not that far off I-70. Several loops to choose from. Camp Gatekeeper very friendly and accommodating. Selected a site from his map but when we located it, knew it wouldn't work for our motorhome. Called him on the phone and he advised just change the number on the windshield tag to the site we determined would work. Park was getting ready for their annual history event the following weekend so was filling up with campers. Had a very pleasant stay and definitely will put them on our map for next year. We camped at Fowler Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If coming off I-70, numerous opportunities to shop and/or eat before you turn off to the park. Cross the railroad tracks SLOWLY. Very rough. Otherwise, good road into the park.

Lyman KOA, Lyman, Wyoming

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

Almost missed this location due to construction on I-80. It would have been our misfortune. Couldn't have asked for a nicer staff. While it is not a "corporate owned" KOA location, it has everything you need and the owners are so genuine you hate to leave. Since we make this trip nearly every year, it is now one of our annual overnight stops. We camped at Lyman KOA in a Motorhome.

Farewell Bend State Recreation Area, Huntington, Oregon

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

A beautiful park. Lots of available spaces given the day of the week for an overnight stop. Both of us agreed we would love to be able to stay longer and we will on our next trip. All of the park rangers we encountered were very pleasant and professional. We chose a site close to the bend in the Snake River for a great view. We camped at Farewell Bend State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If eastbound, stop at the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center on Flagstaff Hill just east of Baker City, or if westbound, stop the next day. It's about an hour away from the park.

Lyman KOA, Lyman, Wyoming

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

What a find! About 60 miles West of Rock Springs, Wyoming on Interstate 80 (40 miles East of Evanston, WY), we had pretty much decided we were in for a night of boondocking and happened upon this gem in the desert. The owners and staff couldn't have been nicer nor more friendly and welcoming. While everything was grass and gravel/dirt, that part of the country is traditionally dry enough that mud is probably rarely a problem. The entire campground was nicely manicured and watered every day and, in additional to the expected KOA store, they also featured a kitchen in which they would prepare your ordered items and deliver them to your site. Not only would we stay there again, we have put them on our list of "must stop" locations. We camped at Lyman KOA in a Motorhome.

A Country RV Park, Bakersfield, California

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Spent an overnight on a trip home from Oregon. Were mainly looking for a strategic overnight stop and get an early start over the Tehachapi Summit the next day. Staff was extremely pleasant. Park was very easy to locate in spite of construction on Hwy 58. Very level concrete pad. Nice pet walking area. Fellow RVers very pleasant. Walmart within a couple of miles but don't trust your instincts to get you there. I thought I could just follow section line roads and avoid going back to Hwy 58. Drove eight miles then turned GPS on. Via highway 58, it's about two miles. Would also be a good spot for overnight parking. There were several RVs in the lot when we finally found it in the morning to do our shopping. We camped at A Country RV Park in a Motorhome.

Golden Shores RV Park, Topock, Arizona

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

While it took several phone calls for directions, this site was definitely worth the effort. And it wasn't their fault that I couldn't find them. Actually only five miles north of I-40 and Arizona exit 1, it was pitch dark and my headlights were doing a good job lighting up our front bumper and not much else. A family-owned campground with mostly seasonal campers but a few overnight locations available. And if the campground lacked anything--which it really didn't--The owners more than made up for it. And now that I know how to find them, day or night, we definitely will stay here again. We camped at Golden Shores RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Approximately 20 miles north of Golden Shores on Old 66 is the legendary "living ghost town" of Oatman, Az., where you can see wild burros meandering around town, along with a myriad of touristy stuff. While we were only laying over for one night, we definitely plan to make time the next time to visit Oatman.

Stayed here during the off-season. Water at sites not available (13 degree temps in the morning). Potable water available at drum station/entrance. Electric only during off-season. Heated restrooms and showers. Beautiful, rugged country. Definitely want to return during warmer weather and visit the Ruins, etc. We camped at Homolovi Ruins State Park in a Motorhome.

Wal-Mart within short driving distance, but get directions from staff. I decided to trust my own navigational skills and ended up going 10 miles+ out of the way when it should have been a five-minute driver.

Meadowlark RV Park, Creswell, Oregon

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Strategically, this park was located so we could schedule our southbound trip over Siskiyou Pass for midday when fog would be gone and any icy conditions melted. (Encountered both of those conditions on our southerly trip). While it was the rainy season and there were a few sites surrounded by water, staff gave us a high and dry location on both visits. We stayed at Meadowlark on our northbound trip to Portland as well as our return trip home. And we definitely will stay again. Also enjoyed the little community of Creswell. Be sure and check out the aerial video of the campground. Not sure why more locations aren't doing this. Really gives you a good look. We camped at Meadowlark RV Park in a Motorhome.

Redding RV Park, Redding, California

Overall Rating:

Great layover campground and a good location for your base camp if you're visiting the area. Easy on/off I-5 but you do need to pay attention to your GPS and/or directions. Campground is on a hillside (what else, considering the beautiful area?) but easy to get around and sites were very level. Stayed here on trip to Oregon and on return trip home. Courteous and anxious to please staff. Definitely will stay here again. We camped at Redding RV Park in a Motorhome.

Kit Fox RV Park, Patterson, California

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Kit Fox was an oasis in the desert, though it's not in the desert. I actually thought it was newer than it is (actually about 10 years old). Everything was well-maintained and the staff was eager to please. Within easy walking distance of several eateries, including a KFC, a pizza place and a sit-down restaurant. And a walk-in gate at the opposite end from the campground entry made it very convenient to try out the local food choices. In addition, there is local bus service into the town of Patterson, including a Wal-Mart. Although we missed our first return connection, we got to enjoy a 45-minute ride around the neighboring communities, thanks to a very gracious bus driver. We stayed at Kit Fox on a round-trip to Oregon. On the return trip, we decided to just "hang out" and enjoy a second night. Definitely a place to "hang out." We camped at Kit Fox RV Park in a Motorhome.

Good overnight layover location. Just west of Amarillo, easy on and off from I-40. FUH and pull through. Campground was clean and well organized. Laundry on-site. The owners are gracious hosts. Stayed first time on trip to Oregon, then on return trip. It is an older campground with vintage, heated restrooms/showers. We definitely will stay here on any occasion when we are passing through the area. We camped at Walnut RV Park in a Motorhome.

Railside RV Ranch, Williams, Arizona

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

We stopped at Railside for a one-night layover enroute to Portland, OR. And we were so sorry to be informed they wouldn't be open for our return trip. We were excited to learn, however, that they may start staying open later into the winter beginning in 2018. The park is extremely well-organized and the owners couldn't be nicer and more anxious to please. And their very capable shuttle bus driver is available from morning to night to get you into the business district of Williams (about 2 miles). We will definitely stay at Railside whenever we are in the area. We camped at Railside RV Ranch in a Motorhome.

Easy on/off, approximately 1 1/2 miles south of I-40 (paved county road a little rough but navigable). Owners very friendly and eager to please. Site was clean and well-organized. A nice layover location and, if you're going West over Tehachapi Pass, it's close enough that you can time your drive to get over the Pass during midday.
