Shenandoah Hills Campground, Madison, Virginia

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

I stayed here for 2 months during the off season for work. It was very quiet and the service was very friendly. The Campground is very natural which translates to shaded, unlevel and muddy. Some sites are better than others but I think I had one of the worst sites available. I had to use 3 2x8s to get the camper close enough to level to run the fridge. The water came out of the tap muddy so run it before you hook up. The cable was fine, water pressure was good, power was fine. The sewer hookup on my site was 2'from the road so I had to run nearly 25' of sewer hose and it was only about two inches below the bottom of my tank across the ground that sloped up to the road. I literally had to walk the sewerage to the drain everytime I dumped. Fortunately I was alone so I didn't have to dump often. Like I said, I think I had the worst site as the others looked fine. My site was 33 so I do not recommend that site. The best sites seemed to be the ones between the cabins. The pull troughs were very muddy when it rained. They require heated hoses for winter stays, otherwise you have to use tank/pump. They sold heated hoses for a reasonable cost. We camped at Shenandoah Hills Campground in a Travel Trailer.

James Island County Park, Charleston, South Carolina

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

This is a fantastic municipal park with tons of amenities and activities. The campground is very nice with large, level, shaded, full hookup sites. They are 30 minutes away from Historic Charleston. I would suggest reservations due to the attraction of the park activities. The dog park is very unique as it is a large island in the middle of a pond. There were tons of animals running around having the time of their lives. There is a huge community water park (seasonal), a rock wall, seemingly endless walkways, and at Christmas a fantastic light display like I've never seen. We will most definitely be staying here again very soon. We camped at James Island County Park in a Travel Trailer.

Skidaway Island State Park, Savannah, Georgia

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

This is a wonderful park with very private, natural sites. They're mostly all "pull through" though they're not listed as such. The sites along the perimeter of the loops offer the most privacy by the way they are setup. They are also pull through. The natural setting could be a problem for your vehicle or your camper if you're not careful though. There are plenty of trees and uneven roads to navigate to get you to your site. Once you get there though, you will be satisfied. The privacy and serenity if the natural setting will make you feel like you're the only people for miles. They only have a few full hookups so reserve one if you need it. There is a dump station though so not to worry. There are several convenience stations with bath houses and laundry as well as several nature trails. We camped at Skidaway Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Three Oaks and a Pine, New Orleans, Louisiana

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

There is nothing fancy about this campground. It is a very level lot for you to securely park your camper with full hookups. The sites were good sized with plenty of room for any sized rig. There is a dog park and a lounge, bath/shower rooms, and laundry facility on site. There is an active train track that runs right along the back of the property but, surprisingly, we were not disturbed by the train at all and never heard a horn. We stayed overnight and it is very convenient to The French Quarter. The host was very accommodating, they had great water pressure, and everything worked as expected. We camped at Three Oaks and a Pine in a Travel Trailer.

Dellanera RV Park , Galveston, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

This is an amazing campground. It is small so I imagine it fills up during the season. It is directly on the dunes of the Gulf of Mexico. The campsites position your camper so your front door faces nearly due east to take full advantage of the beautiful sunrises. The campground is very well maintained and had good water pressure. The only caveat is the sand spurs. They're horrible so stay off the grass if possible. If you're traveling with pets, walk theme along the sidewalk, across the boardwalk to the beach. Ours collected plenty of spurs before we realized they were going to be a problem. Other than that, we loved this camproud due to its location and cleanliness. We camped at Dellanera RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

San Antonio / Alamo KOA, San Antonio, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

This is a wonderful campground. It is very well laid out and maintained. It seems to be in a seedy/industrial area but is gated and we never gave it a second thought. It is very close to all that San Antonio has to offer. We will definitely stay here again. This is a destination campground with plenty of amenities on site. You don't need to go far if you don't want to. The roads are easily navigated to your very nice, level, good sized site, most of which are somewhat shaded. The hookups were modern, standard, and trouble free not requiring anything extra. It all worked just as expected. We just slept here while we weren't touring San Antonio but there would be much to do if you have time. There is a nice trail, not campground property, that goes by the campground along a stream that tend to be well used by campers and the community at large. We camped at San Antonio / Alamo KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

If you are going to The Alamo (and you MUST go to The Alamo!) Check out a movie called "The Price Of Freedom". It is worth the cost and is only a block away from the The Alamo front door. Also take the time to check out the Riverwalk. It us one of the most beautiful rivers I have ever seen. They have really capitalized on the waterfront within the hustle and bustle if the city life.

Texarkana RV Park & Event Center, Texarkana, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

We stopped off overnight and it was a quick and easy setup on a very level site with full hookups and great water pressure. It must be near a pulp mill because of smell in the air. It was not overpowering but just a faint familiar distinct odor. It may be worse on a warm rainy day as it is in the town near me that also has a pulp mill. We would definitely stay here again when we're through there again. We did not use any amenities but it is a well appointed and very well maintained park. We camped at Texarkana RV Park & Event Center in a Travel Trailer.

Be careful not to hit water hookup with drivers side slide. Some are high enough to interfere and from the looks, some already have been hit.

Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River Park, West Memphis, Arkansas

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here one night to visit Memphis. It was a great site with very accommodating management. We were on our way through but wanted to see Graceland and did not think we would have time. I inquired about late checkout but they were booked. They offered to let us stay a couple hours beyond checkout but if it were going to be any longer we could drop our camper in a lot near the office. Fortunately, we made it to Graceland and back in time to get checked out without any trouble. It is a little ways from the interstate through an industrial area but it was a beautiful campground right on the banks of the Mississippi and was very quiet. After a restful night we woke to a beautiful sunrise over Memphis TN across the Mississippi River. We will definitely stay here again. We camped at Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Check out the Bass Pro Shops and definitely tour Graceland. It only takes a couple of hours if you get there early enough and we did the "deluxe" tour of the his planes, automobiles, and archives. We did not do the VIP due to time constraints but believe it would be worth it.

Cape Charles / Chesapeake Bay KOA, Cape Charles, Virginia

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

Sunset Beach Resort is a very nice campground right on the Chesapeake Bay. The sites were fairly level and large enough for our 50' rig. There are lots of amenities that we did not use. They are pet friendly and have an off leash dog park and beach. The utilities worked just fine with no issues. The wifi worked all across the park and was very fast. They have a hotel and store with two restaurants onsite. You really could stay here for a week and never have to leave. We will likely be regular customers here. We camped at Cape Charles / Chesapeake Bay KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Raleigh Oaks RV Resort, Four Oaks, North Carolina

Date of Stay: November, 2016 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed at Raleigh Oaks because we chose it because of the reviews. This is a wonderful place to stay. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, it is close with easy access to interstate, nice amenities and very well kept. The roads are easily navigable and the sites are large and well maintained. All hookups were hassle free. We plan to stay here again. We camped at Raleigh Oaks RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Walnut Hills Campground (formerly Staunton / Walnut Hills KOA), Staunton, Virginia

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

Walnut Hills is a decent facility. Very dog friendly with an off leash dog park. They have decent sites, not too crowded, many of which are lakeside. We did not stay long and spent most of our days out but would recommend this as a good place to stay. The sewer hook up was not threaded so I suggest you have a donut and/or weights for the hose. Sites are gravel and well maintained though slightly out of level we did not use our levelers. They just installed a wifi upgrade with several new access points around the park so coverage should be sufficient park wide. This happened on October 15, 2016. We camped at Walnut Hills Campground (formerly Staunton / Walnut Hills KOA) in a Travel Trailer.

Asheville's Bear Creek RV Park & Campground, Asheville, North Carolina

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

We stopped in for an overnight stay on our way through. We did not use any amenities that may have been available. We chose this park for its reviews and ease of access. We were not disappointed. It was quick and easy with a great site and great hookups. The campground sites on a hill but it was easy to get in and out. The sites were a bit tight and too short to stay hooked. We had to park the truck along the road in front of the camper. Others have complained about the interstate noise, though we could hear the interstate while outside at 6:00 am, it was faint and was not troublesome or disturbing in any way. We would definitely stay again and would recommend it. We camped at Asheville's Bear Creek RV Park & Campground in a Travel Trailer.

OBX Campground, Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed a weekend at OBX Campground towards the end of the "Peak" Season for the Outer Banks. The reservation was made by phone and was easy enough. The check in was after hours and they had a nice package with all the information we needed at the office. The sites are long enough for our 31' TT and tow vehicle attached. They all appear to be back in but with plenty of room, in fact, there is enough room for another site in between the sites. Our site was gravel, level with a picnic table and full hookups towards the rear corner of the camper. Our site had a spectacular view of the river and was plenty private. It was quiet and well maintained by the friendly owners who were very gracious and even promptly returned our call after hours for check-in instructions. We will definitely stay again, though the price was a bit steep for the few amenities that we would not use, it was worth it for the location, peace, and quiet. We camped at OBX Campground in a Travel Trailer.
