Lake Park Campground, Rapid City, South Dakota

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

The best part about this campground -- for us -- is the location. Not a lot of traffic, 3 terrific parks within a mile including a 20-acre off-leash dog park, huge old trees for shade, and 5 minutes to grocery stores, hardware stores and other retailers. Electric is included. Water pressure a little low. $2/wash, $1 dry. They have a large number of rental cabins if you have friends or family who want to visit. Sites are close together but everyone has at least a patch of grass. We were able to maneuver our big rig between the trees without difficulty. Loads of deer & turkey in the area. Walk from your site to the creek or Canyon Lake for great trout fishing. We camped at Lake Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Dog owners: don't miss out on the HUGE Braeburn off-leash dog park a mile south on Jackson Rd. Be aware it is not fenced and does parallel the road. Rapid Creek runs through the park for water play. The lovely creek-lined Rushmore Lions park is directly across the street from the campground. Paved bike trails connect many of the parks on the west side of town. If you like to hike, visit the Skyline Wilderness Area!

Adrian Municipal Park, Adrian, Minnesota

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Very convenient stop along I-90. Not shown on the map, depending on which sites are in use you can use some of the outer ring spots as a pull-through into the inner ring, which we were allowed to do so that we didn't have to disconnect for a quick overnight. Roads are gravel, sites are grass only and include a picnic table and fire ring. There is a creek that rings the campground which may have been to blame for the musty/barnyard smell in the morning. Grass needed mowing but there was no trash and occupied sites were kept neat. There is a camp host on site although we didn't speak to them. We camped at Adrian Municipal Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Elkhart County Fairgrounds, Goshen, Indiana

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Not sure if rate is correct - we stayed here as part of a large rally with FHU. Parking varies -- some areas are all gravel, some are all grass, and are mostly level. Picnic tables are only provided in certain areas. No fires allowed. We had no difficulty navigating the interior roads in our big rig (43 ft. fifth wheel & semi truck). Keep in mind this is a 4H park with an equine race track and stables - you may see, smell, and hear them. Meeting space was large, well-lit and well-ventilated with sizable kitchen and bathrooms. There is lots of room to ride bikes or walk the property on a mix of asphalt and dirt roads. Downside - the south border of the park property has a very active rain line - every 10-15 minutes, day and night. I would not hesitate to stay here again. We camped at Elkhart County Fairgrounds in a Fifth Wheel.

Little River Casino Resort, Manistee, Michigan

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Quiet campground with 95% adult patrons. Half sites are W/E only, other half are FHU. Many folks also just dry camp for free in the casino parking lot for 1-2 nights. You get access to the hotel amenities - 3 pools & hot tubs, fitness room, sauna (all free), and spa ($$$). The buffet is a good value M-T, not sure it's worth $30/pp for the dinner seafood buffet on Friday & Saturday nights. Ample & convenient guest/overflow parking. Staff are friendly and competent. You can receive packages here - they even brought some to my door when they knew I was waiting on them. Only drawback is that there are only 2 washers/dryers for 100 sites. We camped at Little River Casino Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Be sure to check out the bargains at the Bargain Barn. Tubing/kayaking the Big Manistee River is not very scenic. Do a tour of the Arcadia & City of Milwaukee ships. The 2-mile hiking trail at Orchard Beach State Park is easy and scenic. FOR DOG OWNERS: 2 great dog-friendly beaches in the area - between the piers in downtown Manistee (next to 1st St. beach), and North Beach at the north end of Washington St. Parkdale Veterinary Hospital offers good-quality boarding.

Camp Lord Willing Management RV Park & Campground, Monroe, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

(Price reflects the monthly rate of $595 + electric.) This is an older, family-owned and operated park with many seasonal rentals. Navigating the park with our big rig (43-foot 5th wheel towed by a Volvo semi truck) was not a problem. Staff was friendly and quick to help. Bathrooms are dated but clean. Most sites back onto canals, so there are lots of geese and ducks to watch. Sites along the canals have nice trees (cottonwoods, mostly) for shade. There are also some pull-through sites available with no waterfront and no trees. There are 6 washers/dryers for $1.75/load. The "playground" is dinky and the "swimming beach" is not something I'd dip my toe in, mostly for the aforementioned waterfowl but also because it looks weedy and cloudy. Good place to stay for exploring the area or visiting with family (as we did). The park had a big BBQ and fireworks display to celebrate the Fourth of July. We camped at Camp Lord Willing Management RV Park & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Haas Lake Park RV Campground, New Hudson, Michigan

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful, peaceful park with 4 lakes and mature trees. The lakes are home to many ducks, geese, and swans, turtles, and fish. There is a high percentage of seasonal and park models throughout (many are families that have been coming here for decades) but all are well maintained. The roads are easily traveled by a big rig, and all sites around Lake #4 (Y & Z sites) will accommodate 45+ footers. AT&T signal is poor but acceptable (1-2 bars). We did not give it a higher rating because there are not enough laundry facilities for a park this size (2 laundry rooms with a total of 7 washers & 7 dryers). Also, despite nice long/deep sites, our fire ring is located 3 feet from a pine tree and 3 feet from a slope to the water, limiting use. Roads are dirt and frequently in need of grading, especially on the entrance road but also throughout the park. There was also a mixup with our reservation which couldn't be resolved. There's no off-leash dog park, but there's a county dog park just a couple of miles away (Lyon Oaks - $$). The Camp Store is only open on weekends during May/June until school gets out for the summer. Note that only about 1/3 of their sites have sewer hookups. There is a honey wagon that can be scheduled for something like $8-10 per trip. We camped at Haas Lake Park RV Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Honeysuckle Meadows RV Park (formerly Cove Mountain RV Park), Sevierville, Tennessee

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

***Park is now marketed as Honeysuckle Meadows, but signage still says Cove Mountain. We spent a very pleasant 2 weeks here. Sites are very large with good drainage, fire pits, and picnic tables. The park is built on a hill - there are no sharp turns in the road, but be aware that not all sites are level (mostly front/back). Most sites are gravel, a few have covered wooden structures for the patio. The drive is big rig friendly, and a number of spots can accommodate a Class A & toad. With our semi truck pulling a 43' 5th wheel, site #2 was perfect for us. Casual country hospitality here - no big rule book. Great place to stay to be away from the noise of Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. There are also rental cabins on the property. No laundry, but there are laundromats in Pigeon Forge, about 15 minutes away. There's a great grassy area just behind our site where we could play fetch with the dog (important for us). ***If you're driving anything larger than a Class B/C, make sure you drive in from the Northeast, from the Pigeon Forge area. Wears Valley Road (321) is very twisty but it's much worse if you come through Maryville and Townsend. We camped at Honeysuckle Meadows RV Park (formerly Cove Mountain RV Park) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Take an early morning drive to Cade's Cove. Visit the GSMNP Sugarland Visitor's Center. Buy a fresh loaf of bread from the Valley Bake Shoppe and Cafe just 2 miles to the east. The larger markets (Kroger, Publix) are 15 mins. away in Pigeon Forge, but there's a small country market just a half mile west on 321 for the basics. Propane is available about 6 miles to the east on 321.

Deer Run RV Resort, Crossville, Tennessee

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful, clean, peaceful park 10 minutes outside of Crossville. The only reason we didn't give it a 10 is because the majority of the temporary camping sites are a long 10-minute drive from the entrance. Big rig friendly - no problems getting our 43-foot 5th wheel in a back-in spot. All gravel roads & large campsites. Park is very large with mature trees & a large lake. Camp store is very well supplied with everything from food to bait to auto parts. We camped at Deer Run RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Nashville I-24 Campground, Smyrna, Tennessee

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

Big park with large portion of permanent/seasonal campers. Gravel streets & lots, little grass. Lots of mature trees, mostly on perimeter. Helpful staff. $1.25 wash/ $.25 dry. Overheard that this was formerly a KOA - small pool (closed for season) and playground reflect that. Trash pickup twice a day. Small dog walk, no offleash area. Joy O RV Park, Denmark, Tennessee

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

Clean and quiet! Fine for an overnight stop, but I wouldn't want to stay longer as there are no amenities beyond the laundry. Small mom-n-pop park, for sure. Entry is dirt and twisty, but we had no problems with our big rig. Small park, only about 30 spots on one looped road. All hookups worked fine, although the look of the electric pedestals was a little concerning at first. Mature evergreens line the park, next to a wheat field. Open grassy area to exercise the dog was a bonus. There were only 4 other rigs there, and 2 of them had "Rent is due" notices on the doors. We paid cash as the credit card machine was down, so not 100% sure of the accuracy of the "Amount Paid" field. We camped at Joy O RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Cloud Nine Park, Hot Springs, Arkansas

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

Rate was $185/week (Good Sam rate). 10 miles from downtown Hot Springs. Quiet, well-kept park with quite a few permanent residents. As others have mentioned, the driveway is steep and twisting, but safe - we used a semi to pull our 44-foot fifth wheel up the incline with no problem. Just swing wide and go slow. Asphalt road, gravel lots. Spring mornings here are beautiful -- lots of birds, mature trees, and a walking trail. $1.50/load to wash/day - nice commercial machines. No fire pits, but you can bring your own as long as it's covered. Manager/staff are nice and always working hard. We enjoyed our stay and would stop here again. La Hacienda RV Resort & Cottages, Austin, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Rate shown reflects monthly rate of $660 + electric. Books up very fast for winter months - taking reservations 2 years in advance. The only reason I did not give 5 stars for cleanliness is the dog park. There are persistent muddy areas that stink - I've been told that this is because the dog park was built over the former septic field. There is a free dog wash station. Everything else about this park is first-rate. On the plus side, the dog park is very large and grassy and my dog loved it. Park is big rig friendly. Laundry is $2 wash, $2 dry. Lots of planned social activities, friendly patrons and staff. Pool and hot tub are wonderful. This park also has a container for recycling - rare and appreciated! Pros: Location - Lovely park in a quiet area. Friendly visitors & staff, 90% retirees who are staying for a month or more. Wide streets with two rows of long, level pull-through sites - definitely big rig friendly. All concrete including large patio. 20 feet between sites. Hiking trail. Nice views of golf course. Cons: Location - Not a lot to do in the area if you aren't a golfer. Half hour drive to get to San Antonio, 45+ mins. to get to north side. Pool is not heated. Off-leash dog enclosure is small and not very accessible. NOTE - Price is based on $640 for a monthly stay. Electricity is metered & separate charge. $15 pet fee. Greenlake RV Resort, San Antonio, Texas

Date of Stay: January, 2017 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

NOTE: We paid $742.50 for a one-month stay, plus electric (which worked out to be about $60 for a chilly month where we ran the heat more then the A/C.) "Nightly Rate" reflects this monthly rate. Park is very new and thus amenities are in excellent condition. Sites are concrete & level. There's about 10 feet between spaces in the loop we were in. Park is clean with nice wide streets. Managers are knowledgeable about the area. On-site perks include a dog wash, propane station, and 24-hour laundry. This park is big rig friendly. Enforcement of rules is somewhat lax, but we only noted one major infraction. About half the park seemed to be monthly/seasonal stays for work or leisure. There's a new Tacqueria "La Tapatia" just outside the park which serves excellent & inexpensive Mexican food all day. If you have a dog that needs more exercise than just walking around the park, drive 3 miles north on Old Corpus Christie Road to Brooks Park where there are several soccer/football fields that are generally empty during the school day.
