Thousand Trails / Kenisee Lake RV Campground, Jefferson, Ohio

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here for two nites, as do not do one niter's. Not very far from RT 90 heading east. Gravel roads, some grading needed. Must have had rain, as many large puddles in roads. Nice level gravel site, surrounded with grass. Notice at office to be careful, as a picture of MH that had to be towed from grass area. No cable, OTA poor (2 channels that were clear). Open area, good for satellite dishes. Most sites are back-in, but there are 15 pull-thru sites. Water, el and dump easily accessible. Many outdoor and indoor activities. Quite a few seasonal sites with 5th wheeled RV's. Was told that last weekend (Memorial Day) park was full. (Hour east of Cincinnati). Did not un-hook toad, never left camp. Will stop here again when traveling on RT 90 thru this area. Flying J on way in. We were given a list of close restaurants, hardware and Walmart locations. We camped at Thousand Trails / Kenisee Lake RV Campground in a Motorhome.

Camp Perry Lodging & Conference Center, Port Clinton, Ohio

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Really nice campground. 40 sites with good road network. Sites are blacktop, level and long. Narrow, but usable for our 40 motor home. Water and electric standard park utilities (locked, given key at registration). Dump is somewhat unusual. There is a 6" opening in a 36" iron cap. When you remove the 6" opening, there is the standard piping for your dump hose, 8/10" below. I have a Sani-con system. Little difficult to get the end, into that space and secure it onto the dump pipe. There is a table and fire ring at each site. There is toilet/shower building located at the park. Didn't use, tho many folks did. OTA TV reception poor and no cable. When here last, (06) the trees were newly planted. Tree near our site is a Callory Pear, now 7-8" caliper. Nice lush lawn throughout. When entering Camp, signs direct you towards RV PARK. You pass the park road and end up at (the office) where you register. (There is a printable map on their web site that is useful) Didn't know that. Made U-turn there and went to park. Called office, they gave me site #, parked, and went back to office and registered. On their web site, lists a dining hall open to everyone, but when I inquired, told there was none. Their web site need updating. Camp was full (Memorial weekend) of young families. Thought that many were active guardsmen (no near military bases), until I found out park is open to public. There is no gate to the post. There is no security patrolling to insure rules are maintained. Rules ignored this weekend. No quiet hours, no dog rules (must be leashed) not running loose. Kids on skate boards, bikes and a not so new stand-on gizmo late into the nite. There were three large (separate) groups partying. Must have requested specific sites to be together. We have stayed at FamCamp's throughout 46 (??) states. Cost out of range for what you get. Other campground near-by, with various discounts, offers more. At $40/nite, (with military discount) doubt that we will return. Many campgrounds near. Check them out before booking here. We camped at Camp Perry Lodging & Conference Center in a Motorhome.

Thompson West End Campground, Washburn, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

This is a county park, one of two county parks in Washburn. This park was noted as better for large units. Park is on the Chequamegon Bay, connected to Lake Superior. When we arrived, only found lean-to with instructions. Pick site, fill out form, deposit check into container. No map, only packet for depositing money. Few sites left and few pull-thru, rest are back-ins. No water or dump at sites. There are two spigots with potable water, and a dump station. (Also Artesian well w/running water). Sites are mostly pretty level. Ours was not. Will try to re-level. Sites are dirt or gravel and grass with table. Most are sunny, few with shade from large trees. Electric post w/30/50 and a cable hook-up. Have to get box from camp host. OTA, there are 8 digital stations. There is plenty of room between sites, large playground for the kiddies. We camped at Thompson West End Campground in a Motorhome.

Lake DuBay Shores Campground, Mosinee, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

Here for 2 nites on our way North. Located on Lake Du Bay (central Wisconsin on Wisconsin River), with 200 sites and 78 boat slips on the lake. Open year round. Our site (P/T) was F/H, some gravel and dirt, and heavy shade if the trees had leafed out. Was able to level, but some sites might be hard to level. There are MANY seasonal units thru-out campground. Most units are empty at this time of year (some slightly (?) run down). Overall, park looks unkempt. O/A Digital TV was very good with 12 clear channels. Very few sites good for satellite dishes, as many trees and pines. There is free Wi-Fi, but not given code when checked in. Plenty of standard and non-standard rules. (Children must be at camp-site by 10:30) Our site was $50/nite. Did get a Good Sam discount, but thought the cost was excessive for an empty campground. There are charges for everything. (50 AMP - $2, Pet -$2, early/late arrivals $2/hour, boat fee $7, but slip is additional $25. During the summer season, this could be a destination camp for regional campers, who would make use the lake/river. We would not return if not for our route back to Long Island. We camped at Lake DuBay Shores Campground in a Motorhome.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park, Caledonia, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Here for three days on way to Washburn ('bout as far north before the lake) to visit relatives. 1st time staying at a Yogi Bear Campground. Located just south of Milwaukee county line. $40/nite on weekdays, $45/nite on weekends. Friendly management. They are adding a gate pass for RV's. Wife had exit RV to reach gate monitor, as low, only for autos. Too early for the season, few campers here on Thursday, but many came on Friday. 48 degrees and everyone is out, bundled up in front of the fire pits. I think that they had Cabin Fever over the cold and snowy-wet winter. Sites B/I, and pull thru. Ours is a standard pull through, Gravel w/ table and fire pit, F/H/S, OTA TV pretty good, no cable. Premium pull throughs are cement pads with a small (in ht) wall, surrounding the fire pit. pull through sites very level. Roads are gravel, and mostly groomed. Many cabins, including the "Glamping Loft Cabin". Some cabins are pet friendly. Military discounts' at varying times. The brochure shows many activities during warmer weather. Themed weekends, they will have 10 activities each day. Appears a great place to come with "young'uns". Will stop here on our way back to Long Island in 10 days. We camped at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in a Motorhome.

Located in Goshen IN., stayed 6 days. Here for a FMCA/Holiday Rambler/419 Maintenance Session. Some 240 Motor Homes here, with 35 (?) paid no-shows. All sites located throughout the fair grounds. All back-in with full hook-ups. Daily cost is $25.00. On some weekends, there are various functions from: 4H events, auctions and name music shows. Organized trips to MORryde and Precision Painting. Many vendor booths manned, when not giving a seminar. Also new and used motor homes for sale. Food set up by various vendors. Great meal on closing ceremonies nite. We camped at Elkhart County Fairgrounds in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

We went to a Amish theater and dinner in Nappanee. Very good show and dinner. Near is Shipshewana, lots of flea markets and shops. Elkhart is also close. This area of Indiana is called the "Capitol of the RV Industry". 90% of RV's are assembled here. There is also the RV Museum near-by. Have come to this rally 6 times and will be back.

Walden's Creek Campground, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

Here for 6 nites to see the attractions. Creek is more like a small river flowing fast. There are 34 back-in sites w/full hook-up. Some are long term, but all very friendly campers. Sites are close, gravel with concrete pad w/two chairs and table. Sites 1 thu 11 back up to road. But not much traffic. Had to come in exit to be able to back into site. Cars and p/u's parked in street as no other place to park. Parked toad next to MH. Could not log on to WiFi, used phone hot spot and our MiFi. Cable was good w/ some 15 (?) good channels. Attractions ½ mile away on main drag. Next door campground (Creekside) was larger and also had a trolley stop that went around the town. We camped at Walden's Creek Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Feuding Hatfield's and McCoy's dinner shows and Dolly Parton's Stampede dinner shows, are good family fun, meals were so so. Better food at the various restaurant's on main drag. We ate at Smokey Mountain Brewery. Good food and love the Cherokee Ale so much, bought a growler of it. Don't miss Gatlinburg, 7 miles. Found a good eatery/brewery at Marketplace. Tom and Earls Back Alley Grill. Music and good food. There are many places that are located off main road, thru an entrance way.

Weston Lake Recreation Area (Military FamCamp), Fort Jackson Army Post, South Carolina

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Office open at 10 AM. Very nice campground. All sites are back-in. Tall pine give sites shade, or there are sites in the open. My site backed into the woods overlooking the campground. All are full hook-up. There was cable in the electrical box. The channels were terrible. Tried OTA and received 27(?) HD channels, with very good reception from Columbia. Insure that your GPS has the address of 2420 Leesburg Road, Hopkins, SC 29060. Long way from Main Gate. There is one gate (#5) on Leesburg Road. Hours are 5-10 AM and 4-6 PM for outbound only. If you miss that time frame, find another gate. On my second trip to the camp office, (computer down when I arrived), asked for Jackson map. Be sure to get one with the gates and times. There was also a BBQ stand. Note that if going to post, gate on Leesburg Road closed during the day. Road to office says one way. I ignored sign as if you go the right way, hold on tight. Road need a lot of work. We camped at Weston Lake Recreation Area (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Hilton Head Island Motorcoach Resort, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $90.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here for six days visiting relatives. (The military discount covered the taxes, buy still ended up at $90/nite) You go to the web site, and you can review pictures of sites available. You pick the site and give a deposit. (had MH problems and had to change reservations 4 times. They were very nice, and all I wanted was any site at that point, so they just gave me a site). All sites are privately owned and rented when owner not here. Our site was very shady, with table and chairs on extended patio. Patio needed to be power washed. Chairs had lichens growing. The owners (not this site) plant nice shrubbery and flowers. Site maintenance is done by owners and the entire park is really nice, and manicured. Few sites are a little overgrown. Most sites have plantings that block your neighbors. Not the friendliest crowd. When walking our dog, we were lucky to get a wave hi! Gated with a pass card. Nice pool and clubhouse. Many tennis courts. There are no golf carts allowed, and only propane fire pit allowed. They do have a guide to your site and directs you in. All sites are back-in. There is shopping nearby (Publix, Walgreens, Staples, and such). Cannot count the number of nearby restaurants. We camped at Hilton Head Island Motorcoach Resort in a Motorhome.

John Prince Park Campground, Lake Worth, Florida

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

This is a County park. County residents pay less. We stop here when we are in the area to visit friends in Boynton. We like this park and the lake is beautiful. As previously noted, jet skis and boats are not annoying. Have kayaked here a few years ago. Waterfront sites are for 14 days or less. Longer term site are just across the road, or further back. I do not see any pull thru sites. They have a 90 day out booking. They will not book prior to 90 days out. Had to rearrange my plans as a "Garlick Festival" completely booked the campground. Congress (main thoroughfare) and the surrounding area have any restaurant or store that you ever visited. We camped at John Prince Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Publix in either direction on Congress. Publix is the only place to buy baked goods, as no bakeries. Home Depot near. Fuel stations and drug stores galore. My friend took us to Golden Coral (none on Long Island) and also to a chinese buffet. Both, the food was delicious. There are the normal ones (Chilies, Texas Roadhouse, Olive Garden and so on).

Holiday Travel Park, Holiday, Florida

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

This is an Encore park, so zero cost for our TT plan. Glad of that as we would be unhappy if the was costing us. Roads all blacktop, but some tight turns. Site numbers start at one and stop a 591. While driving around, I am guessing that there are 30 (??) sites for RV's. Those are all back-ins, and in one area. We are (not in that area) in between a single wide mobile home and the bathrooms & dumpster. Have not visited the bathrooms, but there are folks cleaning every day. I am surprised that many of the permanent residents use the bath house. Just about every mobile home has a carport. Took me 30 minutes to back into my site (with the help of worker and two residents). Very tight to put a 40' into designated site. I carry a second fresh water hose, as the 25' did not make it to the water spicket, shared with another mobile-home. The good news is that the over/air was good (ABC,NBC,CBS). Tampa towers not far. Long term residents can have Spectrum cable hooked up. Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, beer and liquor stores close. Plenty of restaurants on the main Hwy (Route 19). Route 19 has heavy traffic in the morning and afternoon. Nice pool and club house. Here during an 8 day heat wave, as daily temps above 80, up to 85 and humid. Plenty of 50 amp, as A/C's ran all day. Met many friendly neighbors. Parked car on side of MH, just enough room. We camped at Holiday Travel Park in a Motorhome.

Peace River RV & Camping Resort (Thousand Trails), Wauchula, Florida

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

Arrived at 3 PM. There is a "lottery" here at 1 PM every day (for full hook-ups) . If that is what you want, your name goes on a list. Our name was put on the list for full-hook ups, probably # 10. Parked in a w/e only, overnight, as no F/H available. Drove the park with list (given out daily after 12 noon) If there is a site open and you like, park in it and notify office. Next day, after some leave park, another list is given. Pick an empty spot, and wait for lottery at 1:00. As they call out names, when yours is called, pick a site you like (that has not been taken by a name on the list that is prior to yours). Move in. Really first come, first in. Little long wording, but be prepared. 460 sites, the bulk are W/E only. All are back in, with (usually) room for auto. Most F/H have fire ring, table and cement patio. Here during President Week, lot of kiddies. Area A on slope, so many kids on bikes cruising down road. Mostly shade, w/some full sun sites. W/D, pool, hot tub, shuffle board, pickle court, musicians on occasion, ice-cream socials ($1/bowl). Many activities. Boat ramp on the Peace River. Entered river at County Park up river, 2 hour kayak trip to Camp. Nice scenery, saw many crocks sunning on the sides. Saw many folks panning in the river for artifacts. Mostly found small sharks teeth. Office has other item found in river. Must go to Arcadia to the meat market!! We camped at Peace River RV & Camping Resort (Thousand Trails) in a Motorhome.

Orlando RV Resort (Thousand Trails), Clermont, Florida

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

Very large Campground w/845 sites. Here for 14 days as Thousand Trails member (membership works for us as we camp 6-7 months a year, but doubt for weekend campers). Some pull-thru, most back-in. Our site had cement slab for MH, grass w/picnic table. No fire ring, but many campers bring their own. Full hook-ups and basic tent sites. Boat launch on Lake Hancock (area D) and fishing from dock area. Nightly crowd there to watch fire-works from Disney. No swimming there as gators may be there also. During busy season, newcomers (with/without reservations) line up at noon at entrance. Before then, new campers are turned away, to come back at noon. We arrived at 3PM, went right to parking lot where you are met with golf cart person, and guided to a site. We were told by friends inside to ask for one of three sites that were open. We took one that was close to them. We use a Verizon MiFi. Reception was slooooow. Used phone hotspot and was somewhat better. Did not use the bath or w/d which was close. Usual camp store with food and camping gear. Fresh vegetable stand daily. Located on Route 27. Just south is Route 193 that takes you to Disney (World, Springs, Celebration and all else.) If you look for a restaurant or a gift store, they are along the route. Not sure if these gift stores are less costly than if in Disney. Retired military (DOD/VA disability, and a few more) go to "Shades of Green", ARMY owned hotel. There you can buy discounted tickets to any of the attractions. You can also stay there. Believe they charge by rank!! We camped at Orlando RV Resort (Thousand Trails) in a Motorhome.

Keep in mind that the entrance to Campground at noon is bumper to bumper for 45 minutes plus. Celebration is owned by Disney, and has many quaint shops.

The Oaks at Point South, Yemassee, South Carolina

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

Easy drive from main Hwy. GPS led us off by 1 block and into a museum. Large parking lot to make U turn so that was OK. Correct road (KOA sign, none for TT) leads into a "T". TT to left, KOA to right. Received site # and rules/map. Site was gravel, but muddy into and out of. Short stay, otherwise would request larger site (many unoccupied) where MH and toad would fit unhooked. Some tight turns, but navigable. Cable was good, some channels no good. OK for stop over. Probably good during warmer weather. We camped at The Oaks at Point South in a Motorhome.
