Lake Wood Recreation Area, Gonzales, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $19.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed first the end of December for several weeks and then came back again the middle of January and paid for a month which lowered the nightly rate down to $14 for a 30 amp full hookup site. The park is run by GBRA (Guadalupe/Blanco River Authority) which is a non-profit government system. We made our reservation less than a week ahead of our arrival and thus did not have to place a deposit. I communicated via email with the office attendant who was prompt in replying and accurate in his information. The reservation process was pretty painless. They don't however accept credit cards at the campground office, it's cash or check only. They even insured the same site on our return visit which was very nice. The roads are gravel/dirt and the site pads are gravel and level. Most of the RV sites are along the north edge of a Pecan grove with a few along the west end and a few also up near the office when you drive in. Utilities are all in good proximity to the sites, with water and electrical at the rear along a fence row which requires a 50 foot water hose minimum. The Guadalupe Rivers runs along the south border of the campground with access for paddling sports. The lake is dry as stated due to dam failure and our understanding is that there is no plans for repair in the near future. The restroom/shower house was adequately kept, but was a dark green which made it like a dungeon. We did use it. During our stays, the park was never full, with weekends being a bit more busy. We prefer public campgrounds for the quiet and natural settings and this park is one of our favorites. We never had issues with rowdy campers during our stays. The birds and deer were abundant. We didn't really fish the river so I cant comment on that. The current was quite swift as we had plenty of rain. We camped at Lake Wood Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Gonzales has a lot of history being the birthplace of the Texas revolution. There is a memorial museum that is free, several parks and city squares to enjoy, and numerous eateries. Baker Boys BBQ was our favorite. There is also a Walmart, H-E-B grocers, and a Tractor Supply, but they don't have propane so you need to go to Ferrelgas down the road. The office will accept packages for you.

Groveland Oaks, Holly, Michigan

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

This is a county park with many services and facilities besides the campground. We arrived on Sunday afternoon and had made reservations. It was Fathers Day weekend and hot, so there was a long line of cars to enter. There are two entry lanes with one being gated and requiring a pass which we didn't have until we registered, so we had to wait in the line for about 10 minutes. The campground and facilities were all very well kept and each site had a gravel pad for the RV plus a two slot parking space for vehicles, which was nice. The sites had nice fire rings and a picnic table. The interior roads are gravel and well kept. The sites were well spaced and navigating was very easy with a big rig of 42 foot. They have planted many varieties of trees throughout the park which makes it quite nice. There are paved paths for walking and biking throughout the park also. There is a small lake with row boat, paddle boats, kayak, and canoe rental. The beach was maintained well and has life guards on duty from 9am until 9pm daily. They have an arcade building, a putt-putt golf course, bike and peddle car rentals, and a water slide (it was closed for some reason while we were here). We had an issue with our 50 amp circuit, and I asked a staff person how to remedy that, and he said he would pass it along. The next morning an electrician was on site and replaced the breaker. We were pleased with the response. All the staff we came in contact with were friendly and helpful. We camped at Groveland Oaks in a Fifth Wheel.

Hardee Lakes County Park, Bowling Green, Florida

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

We prefer public parks that offer larger sites and Hardee Lakes does that. Some of the sites along Deer lake are pull through which are nice. Utilities were in good shape. Weekends get busy during the peak season, but weekdays the park quiets right down again. We managed to stay longer than the 14 day limit by swapping sites which the management was helpful in doing. The facilities were modern and clean. This is a great place to bring a golf cart or UTV as there are many trails to explore. Unfortunately, due to the alligator population, swimming in the lakes is prohibited. We had no issue navigating the gravel roads with our 42 foot fifth wheel, or spotting it in the sites. We camped at Hardee Lakes County Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Indian Springs State Park, Flovilla, Georgia

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

All sites were fairly level, and plenty deep with some shorter ones. 20/30 amp electric, water, and cable. Cable was not very clear. Park roads are a bit narrow, but our 42' rig was not a problem. Only one washer/dryer per bath house with two bath houses, so we didn't use. We didn't take advantage of the lake on this trip. The staff was very friendly and helpful. One note on entering. There are two park entrances, if you come in the north entrance where the sign is, you will find no place to stop at the office to register. We ended up finding an open site, as reservations are not site specific in Georgia, and then going up to register. This is a very old state park with some wonderful stone buildings dating back to FDR "New Deal" era, and has tons of history behind it. We camped 5 days which went through Thanksgiving weekend. The park got busy a couple days prior to Thanksgiving. I was told that it's full most of the summer also. We camped at Indian Springs State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Rose Lake Park Campground, Cadillac, Michigan

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Rose Lake is a quiet campground with a nice beach on Rose Lake. It is very wooded and all roads are dirt. Care is needed for larger rigs as some turns are tight. Sites are not paved and many are not level. There is a boat launch also. Facilities are clean, and staff is very polite and helpful. We camped at Rose Lake Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Metamora-Hadley State Recreation Area, Metamora, Michigan

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

The weekend we were here the park was having it's Halloween contest which was kind of fun to see how people set up their sites. The campground has two loops with paved roads. The older one which we didn't stay in has more trees and tighter sites which might be tough for bigger rigs. The loop we were in was closer to the entrance and held the bigger units. Sites were all grass with 20/30A electric. No sewer. Water spigots were located around the loops. Sites were pretty big with the ones along Lake Minnawanna a bit shorter so most with bigger rigs were parking parallel to the road. We had site 190 on the inside end of the loop which gave us plenty of space and we parked across the site. We didn't use the facilities so I can't comment on them. There is a nice big beach area across from the front camping loop. There is also a boat launch on the lake which is on the smaller side. I think it's "no wake". We like these quieter, smaller campgrounds and have already booked a waterfront site for August of 2017. We camped at Metamora-Hadley State Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Ionia Recreation Area - Modern, Ionia, Michigan

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We have stayed here many times as it is a little over an hour from home. The campground sits off Sessions Lake which is a small "no wake" lake making it great for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. There is a nice two-slot boat launch. They rent canoes and one person kayaks. The beach is nice, however the wild geese can sometimes make it a mess. There is a bath house located at the beach also. The recreation area also has a picnic area along the lake with a nice fishing pier. There are nice hiking trails that encompass the lake and surrounding area. Last year they finished resurfacing the main road which was terrible prior. The campground also has an equestrian camping loop. All sites are spaced well apart and have nice cover with the sites in the lower loop having more shade. There is a two-slot dump station at the campground entrance. All sites are paved, with 20 and 30A electric, fire rings, and picnic tables. There are central water spigots located around each loop. There is one bath house with (4) showers and (1) HCP shower. The water pressure is good also. The bath house is relatively clean and the rangers come mid day to tend to it. We were in site #12 this last visit, but have been in many different ones over the years. Some have more room than others. I haul a boat along and they are not concerned if you park vehicles or boats on the grass. Ionia is just six miles down the road where there is a Walmart, Meijers grocery, and many other establishments. Overall the recreation area is pretty quiet as it is five miles from I-96 and there are no large cities close by. We camped at Ionia Recreation Area - Modern in a Fifth Wheel.
