Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground, Swannanoa, North Carolina

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $64.00
Overall Rating:

Road into campground is 18 to 20% grade. Difficult for towing a vehicle. Suggest you unhitch before you get off the freeway or crossover to do it first. People were rude about it when we were surprised. Difficult to unhitch the jeep. Area in front of office for a check in is on a steep incline not easy to unhitch there either Even though they believe it is. Wi-Fi is good, worked all the time but not secure. Spaces while they may be level once you get into them are extremely difficult to enter and leave with the severe drop off on the hill. We scraped our front bumper and our back bumper and hitch while trying to get in and out of the spaces. Did not check mountain top ones but not sure how you get up there without a tow truck. Is convenient to Asheville and nearby sites if traveling during tornado season because the mountains block them. We camped at Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Lots of art galleries and studios to visit. Biltmore was very expensive so we did not. up to you. Lots of nice antique stores with some very reasonable prices. Blue Ridge Parkway nearby also a great drive and not too far from the smoky mountains. We would come back to the area but not to this campground.

Campground at Barnes Crossing, Tupelo, Mississippi

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Another park on the side of a hill. Steep interior roads. Unhitch before your tow car before you get there. Much easier to maneuver. Convenient to town and activities. Back spaces have freeway noise, but front ones are quiet. Satellite reception is sketchy due to trees. Most sites are level once you're in them. Large. Sign is hard to see from street. We camped at Campground at Barnes Crossing in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

All things Elvis and his early years. National battlefield park. Downtown is nice, small. Shiloh Military battlefield is a good daytrip. Natchez trace is nearby, great day trip drive without rig.

River Town Campground, Vicksburg, Mississippi

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

This park is on a slope. Big time. Don't go there if you have a coach. Not bad for trailers, easier to level. We had to block 5 blocks in front. Wi fi was lousy. Motorhomes know this, very few there. Lots of trailers. Some coaches found another park. Convenient to town and things to visit. Beware, to arrive you have to make a U-turn, but plenty of room. Also driveway is quite a slope. Heard management were tyrants, but didn't see them personally. Quiet. We camped at River Town Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Vicksburg National Military park is great. not much downtown. Don't bother with visitor's center. NO INFORMATION either state or town. River road isn't bad if you have time. Visit Windsor ruins. If you are into antiques, visit Monroe, LA west about an hour.

Pontchartrain Landing, New Orleans, Louisiana

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $59.00
Overall Rating:

Non existing internet, even though they say it's there. Access road to park is terrible, so be prepared. Spaces are level which is important. Onsite restaurant not willing to accommodate special needs. And no security at night. Trains and planes make noise, but not constantly. We camped at Pontchartrain Landing in a Motorhome.

Winn Dixie and fast foods just a few miles away. easy on, off freeway. Close to downtown NOLA, easy to access. Park at the Basin St. Visitor's center and walk, or take Hop on Hop off.
