Emerald Beach RV Park, Navarre, Florida

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $75.00
Overall Rating:

The reviews here are accurate so I will just add a few observations. We stayed in a beachfront site, and the deck at the back adds a lot of space. Our site (66) had a very tall tiki hut in front that was a little distracting so I would recommend a different site. The Premium Beach sites have no one on your patio side, which is nice, but we were always on our deck so these sites would have no advantage for us. This is a quiet stretch of the Panhandle, if you want action you will have to go to Destin or Pensacola Beach. They have some activities here, you have to watch the whiteboard at the entrance because they don't post them all on their website. They had free coffee and donuts, an ice cream social and a potluck breakfast. We missed the breakfast because we found out about it too late. You are allowed to wash your rig, they will bring you an extra long hose so you can use well water instead of the water supply at your site. We enjoyed Dewey Destin's very much. The food was great, and they are on a private beach so they allowed our dogs to play out there. We camped at Emerald Beach RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Nashville I-24 Campground, Smyrna, Tennessee

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

The reviews here are accurate, the place is fine for sightseeing in the area but not a campground to hang out. Cheapest commercial park in the area. I thought it would be closer to I-24 but it is over 3 miles from the interstate. We bought a Good Sam membership there for $25, she told us it was normally $35 - which I learned later was not true, it is only $29! No matter, it saved us $7 on this visit. We camped at Nashville I-24 Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Franklin has a nice downtown area, we ate at Merridee's Breadbasket and it was excellent. Street parking is non-existent but we found a lot with plenty of open spots on 3rd Ave., just north of the traffic circle at Franklin Square, $2/hour.

Marion Campground & RV Park, Marion, Illinois

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is ideal for your snowbird trip south. Close to the interstate, level, well-drained sites, very friendly and accommodating. After hours check in is easy, easy navigation to your site even after dark, very level sites so no messing around to get comfortable. Sites are tight so probably not great for a longer stay. Best bathhouse we've ever seen, your own immaculately clean private bathroom complete with shower, sink, toilet, shelves, hooks and even a chair. We used it because we had not de-winterized yet. We will definitely stay here when passing through again. We camped at Marion Campground & RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Lake Hawkins RV Park, Hawkins, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

After 6 weeks in West Texas, we were so happy to see real trees! Our site (17) faced woods, not another site so it was very nice and there was even a little bit of fall color. The other reviews are accurate so I will just comment on the gray water situation. I wasn't sure about draining our gray tank at the site but it was not a problem at all. There was a shallow "ravine" and the soil is very sandy so the water just percolates away. I thought my dogs would be in it but they didn't even seem to notice it. Overall, this is a great choice for the area. The famous rose garden in Tyler was still blooming in early November despite the cold snap. We camped at Lake Hawkins RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Yanawana Camp, San Antonio, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

I want to rate this place highly because the owners are so nice and accommodating. We don't need any amenities which is why we chose this place, and it was the lowest cost in San Antonio. It is perfect if you will be gone all day sightseeing. But it is not a pleasant environment for hanging at your campsite, so I thought the price was a little high for the conditions. A few dollars more would have gotten us into a resort (with the resort current discounts) and a much nicer setting. Still, I have to give them credit for the way they manage the property they have. The owners gave us local tourist brochures which were helpful and recommended local places to eat. They let us know that the city bus to downtown runs right past the property, the bus stops are close by. One is at Mission Espada which is only ½ mile away. There was plenty of room for walking my dogs but they warn you to watch for snakes. We did see one but it was tiny. There is no wifi but our T-Mobile hot spot worked well and we had a good AT&T cell signal. No cable but plenty of OTA channels. Park at Mission Espada and ride your bikes all the way to downtown (about 8 miles). Or, take city bus #40 right to the Alamo. Very convenient. We camped at Yanawana Camp in a Travel Trailer.

Johnson Creek RV Resort & Park, Kerrville, Texas

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here with a large group, and then stayed on a few more days to see the area. We thought the facilities were plenty large for our ice cream social for our group of 90+ people. It was a good base to visit many other attractions in the area. The owners were very nice about extending our stay on a day to day basis. There are 3 parallel rows, the last row (sites 61 to 72) back up to the deer feeder area. Deer sleep in the field at night so don't be startled by them! There is one row perpendicular to these 3 (sites 46 to 60), most of these back up to the goat pen. The goats can be noisy but they are so fun to watch! The entrance is impossible to miss coming from Ingram, very open and lots of flags. From Mountain Home, it's a little less obvious, slow down and watch for it. We camped at Johnson Creek RV Resort & Park in a Travel Trailer.

Wifi good but it does drop off frequently and It's hard to get the access page back. Try looking in your history for the page and click that. Check the Luckenbach website for music performances, we went on a Sunday afternoon and had a great time. The food there is surprisingly good and the people are friendly.

We were only there for one night. It had been raining for a week and the sites all had puddles and mud. But the wifi was pretty good. The hiking trail was nice for walking the dogs, and we saw the longhorn steers. We camped at Skyline Ranch RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

On Wednesday nights, the 11th Street Cowboy Bar has open grills. You bring your own meat to grill, they supply everything else for $7, and they have great live music. The O.S.T. (Old Spanish Trail) Restaurant has a cheap, good breakfast in an interesting setting.

Broke Mill RV Park, Del Rio, Texas

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

Things I love about this place: 1. The owners here are wonderful. We're told they are new, owners since Sept. 2018. They are always busy but are still so pleasant and accommodating. The previous owner stays here sometimes and he's very, very nice too. 2. The grounds are spotlessly clean and the buildings are even cleaner. 3. This is the only laundry room I've ever liked (I am very fussy about my laundry.) All new machines that clean AND rinse very well. 4. Thursday night dinner and music. This is a must, plan your visit to attend. There is a place to run your dogs east of the campground but one of my dogs was bitten by a fire ant just walking around in the designated dog walk area. She was miserable for a few days, one pad swelled up. So I didn't want to let them off leash. The fire ants were really bad because it had been raining a lot. There is a bike path that runs west out of the park, it is dirt/gravel/stone that is useful to get some mileage in but it is not very scenic. No real TV but we didn't care about that. We borrowed DVDs from the lending library instead, plus the internet is very good. They have Cowboy Church there on Sunday mornings. We camped at Broke Mill RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Abilene State Park, Tuscola, Texas

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

We were with a group in the Wagon Circle and it was perfect for us as we could all visit in the center grassy area and had our group supper in the hall, which is very well equipped. Our group moved on but we had to stay to take care of a medical emergency. It was a good place to be stuck, a pleasant environment and plenty of nature trails to walk our two dogs. It was fun to see families and friends enjoying all the park amenities. Plus, the rangers could not have been more accommodating, directing us to reputable medical care, helping us figure out the cheapest way to stay, even checking to make sure our air conditioner was running for our dogs when we were gone to the hospital all day. They have wifi, which is rare in a state park, but it is nearly useless. Of the three bathhouses, the one at Brushy Trail has the largest and cleanest showers. The water is hot and the pressure is good. We camped at Abilene State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The paper trail map is not accurate and does not have distances. Ask for a color trails map, it is much better. Almost all amenities are about 17 miles north in Abilene, although there is a small grocery store in Buffalo Gap. Don't miss the Frontier Texas Museum, even if you don't like museums.

San Angelo State Park, San Angelo, Texas

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We loved this place and wished we could stay longer. We stayed in Red Arroyo, which sits a little higher so it was windy! And the landscape is a bit harsh - but that's west Texas. You can see both horizons, watch both the sunrise and the sunset. And the sunrise when we were there was at 7:44 AM since you are very far west in the central time zone. So you don't even have to get up early. The sites are beyond spacious and ours was level, utilities were fine. We appreciated the shaded picnic table. We went searching for the longhorn herd but did not see them. Saw the buffalo herd, though and a lot of deer. We camped at San Angelo State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Hickory Hill Campground, Secor, Illinois

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

We just had an overnight and once we got there, we would have stayed longer. But it was Labor Day weekend, they were totally booked. The transient sites are wide and grassy with a lot of trees. The main thing is the friendliness of everyone there, the owners and the other campers. Made for a very pleasant experience. They had many, many activities planned for the holiday weekend including a benefit for an organization helping disabled veterans. We were sorry we could not stay longer. We did not hear any noise from the gun range, maybe they are closed on Thursdays? The owners feel bad about it but there is nothing they can do. They have a warning sign posted on their check-in desk about it, we stayed anyway because our dogs are not bothered by thunder or fireworks. Anyway, the only thing we heard was cows mooing in the middle of the night! We camped at Hickory Hill Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Veterans Memorial County Park & Campground, West Salem, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

What a find! There are not too many choices for a quick overnight in this area. No boondocking is allowed at the usual places and other campgrounds are either too expensive or too far off I-90. This place is easy to find, just minutes off the interstate, clean and friendly. The office is open until 8:00 (summer) and the place is huge, a lot of sites. There were a lot of rigs there but it was quiet. There seems to be a lot to do there and I'd stay an extra day next time to bicycle the state trail. I think there are many seasonals, especially along the riverfront. We camped at Veterans Memorial County Park & Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Dakota Sunsets RV Park and Campground, Salem, South Dakota

This place was perfect for us. After dry camping in the Badlands, we really wanted a full hook-up but not too far off our route home and not too expensive. This is literally only a mile and a half off I-90 and only $35. A very pretty, pleasant campground. We camped at Dakota Sunsets RV Park and Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Cedar Pass Campground (Concessionaire Operated), Badlands National Park, South Dakota

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $11.00
Overall Rating:

Ok, I did not do my research. First, I thought the view would be like the iconic pictures of the Badlands. So I was a tiny bit disappointed at first. BUT the view is still fabulous. Second, I did not realize there was a bathhouse (8 minutes for $1) or a dishwashing station. We are self-contained so we didn't need it, but we did fill up our water bottles and coffee pot at the water fountain/spigot. This is a quiet campground and the sites are well spaced. Sites are just a wide spot in the road, so you DO have to pull all the way off. Two rigs had their slides out across from each other and it was a tight squeeze to get through. Anyway, no partying, just everyone enjoying nature. The roads are one way so depending on which side you are on, your door might face the road. In site 81, our door faced the picnic table and the Badlands. It rained like crazy and some of the sites flooded, including ours. So the dogs splashed around in about 2" of water in the grass. Some of the other sites were muddy, though. Our neighbors came in after dark and had trouble finding a dry place to pitch their tent. We had AT&T service including slow internet. Our T-Mobile hot spot did not work. We did get some over the air channels late at night, did not try during the day. All said and done, this place is in my top 3 favorite campgrounds. We camped at Cedar Pass Campground (Concessionaire Operated) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Not all the sites face the Badlands. Looking at the site map (you have to initiate a reservation to see it), sites from about 24 to 41 have a view of the Badlands, some better than others. The rest of the outer sites face the plains. There are some rock formations but it's not the same. I would suggest calling for help in choosing a site. I called in February for a June reservation and the ranger's favorite site (41) was booked already but site 81 was available and very, very nice

Beaver Lake Campground, Custer, South Dakota

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $44.00
Overall Rating:

The staff is so friendly here, I really wanted to like this campground. And it was okay, a lot of green space around, places to run the dogs including a fenced dog park. But it appeared just a little run down, a lot of litter around and their free bicycles were abandoned all over the campground. The laundry and showers are pretty clean but they should pop for new shower curtains, very moldy. The showers are tiny but there is a bench and a shower caddy for your things. The breakfast specials at Our Place in Custer are dirt cheap and very tasty. Get to Mount Rushmore early - really. We thought it would not be crowded on a very rainy day but it was. We arrived at 7:30 and it was fine but jammed when we left a couple hours later.
