Shabbona Lake State Park, Shabbona, Illinois

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This is a nice state park only two hours away from Chicago. It is mainly a small (300 acre) fishing lake. We stayed in the Merganser Circle, the inside sites looked all deep enough for larger rigs and mostly shady. The center of the circle is all trees. Our site was 88 and those around us all looked level although the across the road, sites with numbers in the 60's, looked smaller and less level. It was all tents and small rigs on that side. The outside loop sites on the lake side did not have lake views, I think you will have to use Canvasback Cove if you want a lake view. They have water throughout the park but just water fountains and a faucet, the only water for filling your tank is near the entrance. The way it is situated, you will be blocking anyone trying to exit after using the dump stations, there doesn't seem to be enough room for another rig to go around. We camped at Shabbona Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

South Marcum Campground, Benton, Illinois

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

We were walk-ins, and they went above and beyond to get us in. We called ahead and she had two full hookup sites left - but then we were delayed because of a traffic accident. She was so nice about it and even left a map in her outside box so we could find our way to our site. We had a fabulous waterfront site from a last-minute cancellation. Only minor complaint is the traffic noise from I-57, which is quite noticeable at night. The circle on my picture shows where I-57 crosses Rend Lake, doesn't look close but it sounds close. We camped at South Marcum Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Bledsoe Creek State Park, Gallatin, Tennessee

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

We were walk-ins and while we didn't get a waterfront site, we still had a nice view of the water because our site was kind of elevated, plus the sites are staggered so no one was directly in front of us. On our curbside was a nice wooded area where we could walk our dogs. Overall a really nice campground. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Bledsoe Creek State Park in a Travel Trailer.

In February, TN State Parks had a 50% discount and in March it was 25%. Really a great deal because the weather was fine for camping. Gallatin is less than 15 minutes away, we had fun at Starr Ranch at their Tuesday Trivia contest.

Belle Ridge Retreat, Monterey, Tennessee

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

We like state parks for the natural setting, but we like the convenience of commercial parks. This place has it all: spacious sites, woods and fields, a lot of trails plus full hookups. We were walk-ins before the ATV trails opened and there were plenty of sites. We camped at Belle Ridge Retreat in a Travel Trailer.

Duvall in the Smokies RV Campground, Sevierville, Tennessee

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

I think what everyone is saying about this place and the owners is accurate. Things I really appreciated: they called the day of our arrival and gave us excellent directions. The campground is gated and very secure. It was relaxing sitting by the river after a busy day, although the bank was too steep for our dogs to play in the water. The laundry is really nice (just be careful - I did a "heavy" load and it took forever! Multiple people waiting! Best to stick with the "normal" load.). Follow the directions they give you, they are perfect. The campground is behind the Weigel's gas station, it does not directly border Dolly Parton Parkway. They will open the gate for you or just call them if they don't see you arrive. We camped at Duvall in the Smokies RV Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Yarberry Campground, Lenoir City, Tennessee

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

We were walk-ins and got a wonderful waterfront site. I think the other waterfront sites are even better. We were near the boat ramp and fishing pier and there was a working barge docked across the way - which did not bother us at all, we enjoyed watching the activity. Very clean, we saw them leaf blowing and raking moments after each rig left. Level gravel pad, fire pit, picnic table. Bathhouse clean but small with only one shower. No hooks or bench but a plastic chair. No wifi but our T-Mobile hot spot worked. Only negative is there is no sign for the dump station and we had to loop around again to get in line and it is a tight turn. No big deal. It looks like a lot of rigs are long-term, people have a lot of stuff! But everyone was nice enough. We camped at Yarberry Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Holiday Travel Park of Chattanooga, Rossville, Georgia

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $46.00
Overall Rating:

They were very nice on the phone and when we checked in. I guess I expected more for the price, the place is a little run down. Peeling paint and weeds, maybe it looks better in season. Dog park is solid gravel, we didn't even bother. Most sites have a gravel pad for the picnic table but ours did not and the "grass" was sunk below grade. So we had mud. They would not give us gravel or straw for that spot. The RV sites were well-drained but the tent area was under water. There was trash in the fire ring. I saw them checking sites after someone left, they just drive through and look around. We camped at Holiday Travel Park of Chattanooga in a Travel Trailer.

Pensacola Beach RV Resort, Pensacola Beach, Florida

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $82.00
Overall Rating:

Two things would keep us from staying here again. First, they should restrict the Tiki Bar and beach area to resort guests only. I don't mind little kids cutting through my site, which happens. I do mind adults who have been drinking cutting through my site all day and after dark. No wonder they send a special email to remind you to lock up your valuables, the place is not secure at all. Also did not care for loud, foul language right outside my rig. Also did not care for the trash on the beach, empty beer cans and cigarette butts that stayed there all day. By the end of the week I was tired of listening to someone else's choice of rock music. Second, they reserve the best waterfront sites for motor homes, and trailers are relegated to the crummier sites even though the price is the same for both. I understand they cannot control the construction on the adjacent property but they can control the clutter of tiki huts that block the view of the water. And they could adjust the price accordingly. Site 22 is bad, 23 is worse and 24 they have no business using at all but you cannot avoid them because the office assigns sites, you cannot reserve one. To be fair, we did have fun there, nice people around us and they had a meet-n-greet for resort guests one night. Our dogs liked swimming in the sound. But this really did not offset the negatives so we would not go back. We camped at Pensacola Beach RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

They charge $25 if you want to check in early. A nice way to kill time is to park in one of the beach access lots in the Gulf Island National Seashore east of Pensacola Beach. The largest close one is Lot H.

Emerald Beach RV Park, Navarre, Florida

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $75.00
Overall Rating:

The reviews here are accurate so I will just add a few observations. We stayed in a beachfront site, and the deck at the back adds a lot of space. Our site (66) had a very tall tiki hut in front that was a little distracting so I would recommend a different site. The Premium Beach sites have no one on your patio side, which is nice, but we were always on our deck so these sites would have no advantage for us. This is a quiet stretch of the Panhandle, if you want action you will have to go to Destin or Pensacola Beach. They have some activities here, you have to watch the whiteboard at the entrance because they don't post them all on their website. They had free coffee and donuts, an ice cream social and a potluck breakfast. We missed the breakfast because we found out about it too late. You are allowed to wash your rig, they will bring you an extra long hose so you can use well water instead of the water supply at your site. We enjoyed Dewey Destin's very much. The food was great, and they are on a private beach so they allowed our dogs to play out there. We camped at Emerald Beach RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Nashville I-24 Campground, Smyrna, Tennessee

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

The reviews here are accurate, the place is fine for sightseeing in the area but not a campground to hang out. Cheapest commercial park in the area. I thought it would be closer to I-24 but it is over 3 miles from the interstate. We bought a Good Sam membership there for $25, she told us it was normally $35 - which I learned later was not true, it is only $29! No matter, it saved us $7 on this visit. We camped at Nashville I-24 Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Franklin has a nice downtown area, we ate at Merridee's Breadbasket and it was excellent. Street parking is non-existent but we found a lot with plenty of open spots on 3rd Ave., just north of the traffic circle at Franklin Square, $2/hour.

Marion Campground & RV Park, Marion, Illinois

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is ideal for your snowbird trip south. Close to the interstate, level, well-drained sites, very friendly and accommodating. After hours check in is easy, easy navigation to your site even after dark, very level sites so no messing around to get comfortable. Sites are tight so probably not great for a longer stay. Best bathhouse we've ever seen, your own immaculately clean private bathroom complete with shower, sink, toilet, shelves, hooks and even a chair. We used it because we had not de-winterized yet. We will definitely stay here when passing through again. We camped at Marion Campground & RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Lake Hawkins RV Park, Hawkins, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

After 6 weeks in West Texas, we were so happy to see real trees! Our site (17) faced woods, not another site so it was very nice and there was even a little bit of fall color. The other reviews are accurate so I will just comment on the gray water situation. I wasn't sure about draining our gray tank at the site but it was not a problem at all. There was a shallow "ravine" and the soil is very sandy so the water just percolates away. I thought my dogs would be in it but they didn't even seem to notice it. Overall, this is a great choice for the area. The famous rose garden in Tyler was still blooming in early November despite the cold snap. We camped at Lake Hawkins RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Yanawana Camp, San Antonio, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

I want to rate this place highly because the owners are so nice and accommodating. We don't need any amenities which is why we chose this place, and it was the lowest cost in San Antonio. It is perfect if you will be gone all day sightseeing. But it is not a pleasant environment for hanging at your campsite, so I thought the price was a little high for the conditions. A few dollars more would have gotten us into a resort (with the resort current discounts) and a much nicer setting. Still, I have to give them credit for the way they manage the property they have. The owners gave us local tourist brochures which were helpful and recommended local places to eat. They let us know that the city bus to downtown runs right past the property, the bus stops are close by. One is at Mission Espada which is only ½ mile away. There was plenty of room for walking my dogs but they warn you to watch for snakes. We did see one but it was tiny. There is no wifi but our T-Mobile hot spot worked well and we had a good AT&T cell signal. No cable but plenty of OTA channels. Park at Mission Espada and ride your bikes all the way to downtown (about 8 miles). Or, take city bus #40 right to the Alamo. Very convenient. We camped at Yanawana Camp in a Travel Trailer.

Johnson Creek RV Resort & Park, Kerrville, Texas

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here with a large group, and then stayed on a few more days to see the area. We thought the facilities were plenty large for our ice cream social for our group of 90+ people. It was a good base to visit many other attractions in the area. The owners were very nice about extending our stay on a day to day basis. There are 3 parallel rows, the last row (sites 61 to 72) back up to the deer feeder area. Deer sleep in the field at night so don't be startled by them! There is one row perpendicular to these 3 (sites 46 to 60), most of these back up to the goat pen. The goats can be noisy but they are so fun to watch! The entrance is impossible to miss coming from Ingram, very open and lots of flags. From Mountain Home, it's a little less obvious, slow down and watch for it. We camped at Johnson Creek RV Resort & Park in a Travel Trailer.

On Wednesday nights, the 11th Street Cowboy Bar has open grills. You bring your own meat to grill, they supply everything else for $7, and they have great live music. The O.S.T. (Old Spanish Trail) Restaurant has a cheap, good breakfast in an interesting setting.
