Lake Anita State Park, Anita, Iowa

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $16.00
Overall Rating:

The lake is what brings water lovers and anglers from all over Iowa here. When you drive in there isn't an official check in gate, but signage points you towards the campground. Once you enter there is self check in kiosk as well as a printed sheet listing all the reserved sites. The campground has a mixture of full hook up sites, sites with only electric and a tent camping section. If you need to take on water like we did, you'll actually have to drive through the campground and follow the exit and then come to the dump station where there is a fresh water fill. Most of the sites for RVs are a bit tight but most all of them provide nice views of the lake. The lake has a great paved 4 mile trail around it, which we enjoyed on bike a couple times and in the morning you'll love watching the rabbits, deer and the amazing number of birds along the path. There is also a bike/hike trail that goes into the small town of Anita. The swimming area was well maintained and quite popular on the days we were there. We camped at Lake Anita State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Take a morning bike ride on the trail into the town of Anita and enjoy a great breakfast at the Weather Vane Cafe. There is also a good Iowa steakhouse in town called the Redwood that I would go back for just for the relish tray they bring out to every table. The campground is close enough for a day trip to Madison County too, where you can spend an afternoon exploring covered bridges.

Fairport Recreation Area, Muscatine, Iowa

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $16.00
Overall Rating:

This quaint campground is located right on the banks of the Mississippi. The sites are all well spaced, gravel and sites 37-42 have the best river views. The bathhouse is a bit dated, but adequate. There is a boat launch and most of the campers there all came for the river. There is another recreation area a little further up the road that we drove through and it seems to be a bit nicer, still on the river and has concrete pads. Both campgrounds are close to the town of historic town of Muscatine Iowa, which has everything a traveler could need. We camped at Fairport Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Elkhart County Fairgrounds, Goshen, Indiana

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

We were coming into the area for some RV Repairs and chose the fairgrounds due to their great location and also because they just wrote our name down when we called for reservations and asked if we would call if we needed to cancel. How nice is that. This is a large fairground and they have camping areas scattered all around. We chose their 50 amp full hook up area, which happened to be right next to a couple horse corrals. We had live entertainment each day. All the sites are large and easy to back in or pull thru. The staff was friendly and they provided a great packet of information that helped point us to a few fun adventures while we were in the area. $33 for full hookup 50 amp and $25 for 30 amp and water. We camped at Elkhart County Fairgrounds in a Fifth Wheel.

Charlestown State Park, Charlestown, Indiana

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We have really enjoyed our stay at Charlestown State Park. This campground is well laid out with an easy drive in and very private with lots of night stars and the sounds of silence. Most of the sites on the passenger side (outside) seem to be at the perfect angle for an easy back in. A good portion of the driver's side sites are straight to the road, and would require a bit of finesse to back in a larger 5th wheel like ours. We stayed in one of the two loops with full hook ups. Shortly after you enter the park, there is a dual lane fresh water tank fill station for all the other sites with no water hookups. The sites are all paved and offer 30/50 amp service. The 15 miles of trails here are beckoning us to explore, so as soon as the rain stops we'll slip on the boots. The area itself has everything you need for supplies, groceries and laundry and Louisville is just a short drive away too. We will definitely be back and stay a bit longer. We camped at Charlestown State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Cumberland Mountain State Park, Crossville, Tennessee

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

We enjoyed a great week at this park. Though we love the rustic charm of parts built by the CCC in the 30's, we are always a little nervous pulling in to these older parks with our 35' fifth wheel. It turns out the roads in the park are all very accommodating for our rig. There are a few places in the lower loop (where we stayed) that you'll need to drive slow and watch the trees. The upper loops are much wider and we would have stayed there, but they were still closed for the winter when we arrived. All the sites are paved and most have 50 amp and several in the lower loop have sewer. All the bathhouses except for one are a bit old, but just remember CCC charm, being grateful for warm water, and you'll find the good. We camped at Cumberland Mountain State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We hiked all the trails except for the overnight trail many times and you'll love how they meander beside the rivers and along bluffs. It's a given that you'll have to also enjoy the great food at the lodge at least once while you are there too and hopefully you'll get a table overlooking the lake like we did.

Rock Island State Park, Rock Island, Tennessee

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

The Rock Island campground is located up on the ridge and there are no waterfront sites. But almost every site is well laid out and each offer a bit of privacy. The campground was upgraded a few years ago and all the sites are paved and there are two modern bathhouses with $1 washer/dryers. Wi-fi is included and has worked great all the times we have been here and we do get 2 bars of 4G Verizon too. With booster it goes up to 4. Our favorite sites for larger rigs (35 ft.+) are 1,2,4,5,6,7, 11, 12, 23,24,33-sewer, 34-sewer, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 42, 44, 46. The park has one campground section that is open year-round, which was great for us this March, when all the COE campgrounds and other great Tennessee parks are still closed for the winter. We camped at Rock Island State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

You won't find too many conveniences close to the park. Yes, there is a Dollar General about 10 minutes away as well as the Rock Island Market that is known for the best catfish around and you"ll be hard pressed to find a parking spot there every Friday, Saturday or Sunday. However, if you are looking for something a little more unique you will be quite surprised and your taste buds will thank you when you stumble upon the Foglight Food House.

Gulpha Gorge Campground (NPS Campground), Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We arrived on a Thursday and there were about 15 sites to choose from. I think we got one of the best, right on the creek and by a little water fall too. The camp hosts call into the rangers at 10 and 4 and give them the number of open sites left. We called on our way in and got the good news, though I would recommend having a plan B just in case they are filled in. All the sites are full hook up and paved. The kiosk where you pay is simple to use and takes credit cards. The camp hosts saw us walking around looking at the available sites and gave us a lift and tour in the golf cart. We played in the creek. We hiked the 4 mile round trip trail into town several times. We had only planned to be in the area for 3 nights, but loved the campground and the hot springs area so much we kept extending our stay, which is a great advantage to a no reservation campground. We camped at Gulpha Gorge Campground (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

Start at the National Park visitors center and take ond of their free tours. Also the city's visitors center is worth stopping in for more local information too. Parking is free in town at sites with meters after 5:00 and on weekends. There is also a free parking garage in town too.

Cedars of Lebanon State Park, Lebanon, Tennessee

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

We like the park for the nature and hiking trails. If you are in a small or mid sized camper you would probably find the campground acceptable. We however travel in a 35 ft fifth wheel and found the campground very tight. We had to get out and trim trees just to make the circle and get into our site. We camped in Loop 1. Loop 2 was even tighter. Loop 3 had the best looking sites but it is only 20 amp service. They offer a code for use of wifi up to 200 mb but it was only good for one device but their wifi reception was very slow anyway so it didn't matter as we found it unusable. We had absolutely no cell signal with Verizon. There is a laundry room with 3 washers and 3 dryers. Washers were $1.50 each and Dryers $1.00. I had no problems with them. We would visit this park again for a day trip. We camped at Cedars of Lebanon State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Defeated Creek Park COE, Carthage, Tennessee

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

It's hard to beat America's Corp Of Engineer parks. So far Defeated Creek is one of our top five. Over half of the sites are water front with a shore line that is very welcoming. Many come with their boats and tie up right in front of their site. This park is very popular so if you want to get one of the water front spots with full hook up, you'll need to do a little planning and reserve early. We also enjoy the mountain bike trails and the Bear Waller Gap hiking trail that connect to the park. There is a marina next door where you can rent boats and the parks day use area has a great tennis court. You'll love the deer at night too! The sites are all well laid out and even the sites without a lake view are tucked away and offer something special. We camped at Defeated Creek Park COE in a Fifth Wheel.

River Plantation RV Park, Sevierville, Tennessee

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $44.00
Overall Rating:

We camped here for a week to attend a RV-Dreams rally. Typically this wouldn't be the type of campground we would search out, as we prefer state parks and more natural settings, but what they offered in other amenities quickly made us forget. Their new pool, hot tub and lazy river were very relaxing and most welcoming. The parks has cable as well as wifi though out. There's also an RV wash service on site. Their spots on the Little Pigeon river are worth the extra $$ if you want more privacy. Site 17 and 18 are probably my favorite but any on the 401-442 loop are great. We camped at River Plantation RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Reed Bingham State Park, Adel, Georgia

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Arriving on a Sunday gave us plenty of wonderful sites to choose from. The layout of the campground was very RV friendly and we had no problems getting in and pulling out. They do have a section of the campground with full hooks and sites that can be reserved. There really isn't any difference in the two sections except the fullhook up side has a newer bathhouse. We enjoyed all their trails and discovered a few of the geocaches hidden in the woods. The staff were very friendly. We love how most Georgia State parks offer cable to their guests as well as provide unique things like a put-put golf course. We camped at Reed Bingham State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Lithia Springs Park, Lithia, Florida

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

There are three parks in Hillsborough county that offer camping and this one is our favorite. It is perfectly located to everything Tampa has to offer and yet far enough away to feel tucked away from it all. Any full time or seasonal traveler will appreciate their no reservations - first come first serve policy. Arrive on a Sunday or early in the week and you are almost certain to get in. I would recommend calling the office the day before to check to see how many sites may become available. You can only arrive during business hours, though we've seen campers waiting to come in at 8:00 when the gate opens. The sites are all well laid out, all with power and water and a dozen or so with 50 amp. None of the sites have sewer connections, though a dump station is available. Our 36' fifth wheel would fit comfortably in 20 or so of the 45 sites. When you arrive you'll be able to drive through and see the sites available and then stop back in the office and pick the site you like best. When you are there you must experience a float down the Alafia River, which runs through the park. Here's a video we took going down the river. https://youtu.be/_NO4cpi02pw Bring your bikes too. They have a great bike/hike trail in the park as well as connect to the 20+ mile fishhawk preserve multi-path system. Bring your bathing suits too. You just have to take a dip in the clearest Florida spring, which the park is named for. We camped at Lithia Springs Park in a Fifth Wheel.
