Onapa RV Park and Campground, Checotah, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: August, 2019 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

This is a very basic, no frills campground that offers great value. It offers easy access from either Route 40 (15 minutes) or Route 69 (5 minutes). The park gives evidence of being well taken care of. It is neat, with no trash laying around. The road in and roads in the park are in good condition, no overhanging trees, and are easy to navigate. Registration is easy and straightforward. Customer service is excellent. There are about 9 pull through sites for transients. Our site like the other pull throughs was hard packed dirt. After a hard rain storm the site drained quickly with no ponding of water. Our site was reasonably level, all utilities were in close proximity to the wet bay and electrical locker. There is no site separation, nothing to separate you from your neighbor, not even a strip of green grass or a small bush. Point of fact, the sewer for the site next to ours was under the lip of our extended patio awning. Yet, we still had another space to move around our rig and access our lockers, etc. We had partial shade for most of the day. Other sites have similar or no shade at all. There is no road noise, but you will if you listen hard hear an occasional train. Other than that, this is a very quiet and peaceful place. We had two bars for OTA channels, 8 channels. Our Dish antenna was able to pick up all satellites on the western arc. Verizon cell and MiFi were good. Free WiFi is offered by the park which is secure and strong. There is a laundry with two each washer and dryer. This is an excellent campground for an overnight stay, or a couple of days. If coming through this area again we would consider staying here for a one to two night stay. We camped at Onapa RV Park and Campground in a Motorhome.

There is no gas station at the exit for the park so plan accordingly. There is a Walmart and other stores, gas stations and restaurants within a 15 minute ride north on Route 69 at exit for Route 266 and Checotah. Want a good breakfast go to the Boom-a-Rang Diner in Checotah

Lake Eufaula State Park, Checotah, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: August, 2019 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful state park. Site separation is excellent. Lots of green space and plenty of shade trees. We had a level site. But our overall experience was anything but pleasant. Months ago I booked a full hookup site with 50 amp. However, upon arriving I discovered we had been put in a 30 amp site. With temps going into the mid and high 90's we felt we would definitely need our AC. So we asked to be moved to what we had booked. Fine, if we were willing to take a site with only water and electric. I reminded them that I had booked my site months in advance and I felt I should be given a 50 amp site FHU site. Sorry, it's a holiday weekend so we are booked and cannot accommodate you. The attitude expressed was take it or leave. So we left. This is the reason for my low overall rating. My advice is beware and check constantly and ensure that what you booked is what you will get. Call, and call again and again to make sure before you arrive. Until their reservation system and customer service improves we would not stay here again. We camped at Lake Eufaula State Park in a Motorhome.

Pin Oak Creek RV Park, Villa Ridge, Missouri

Date of Stay: August, 2019 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

This is a great campground that has been family owned for years. The current owner and all the work campers take great pride in the campground and it is evident everywhere you look. The campground is neat, well taken care of, with no trash lying around. It is easy to get to and any up-to-date GPS will take you right there. The road leading in is paved, wide and in good condition. There is a parking lot to the right where you stop for registration. Customer service is excellent. Once registered you are escorted to your site. Make sure you have a reservation because the campground is usually full. The roads in the campground are narrow, in good condition, with no overhanging trees. There is plenty of green grass and lots of shade trees. Our site was hard packed dirt, level, FHU with 50 amp, with all utilities convenient to the wet bay. We had partial shade throughout the day. Site separation was minimal as is the case with most sites. If you are looking for spacious sites with lots of room between sites you'll generally not find it here. But don't let that put you off. Despite the tight quarters we never felt cramped. The site was long enough for my rig and my car across the front. OTA channels had three bars but did not try for stations. DISH antenna locked on to two of three satellites on the western arc. Pets were observed on a leash. Good general store with food, supplies and a game room. There is a nice pool which is well taken care of. While we were there the owner hosted a customer appreciation barbecue which was very much appreciated. There is a laundry room with six washers/dryers which accept credit cards. We met several people who have been coming here for a number of years and have always been pleased with the campground. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Pin Oak Creek RV Park in a Motorhome.

D & W Lake Camping and RV Park, Champaign, Illinois

Date of Stay: August, 2019 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This is a gem of a campground. It is family owned and has been for three generations. The pride taken in the campground is very apparent. It is small, no frills, but it has all that you need at a fair price. It is neat, clean, well taken care of with no trash lying around. It offers easy and quick access from Route 57 so it is an excellent place to stop for a night or two or longer. The road into the campground is paved and in excellent condition. The roads in the campground are gravel, no potholes, easy to navigate with no overhanging trees. Customer service is fantastic. After registration you are escorted to your site. If you plan on stopping here be sure and make reservations. There is a constant flow of rigs in and out each and every day. Usually by early evening the campground is full. If you can get a pull through site facing the lake it is well worth it. The view in the morning out our front windshield never got old. Just beautiful. Our site was hard packed gravel, level, adequate room for rig and car. All utilities were convenient to the wet bay. It was partially shaded. Site separation was adequate and I had ample room for my patio awning and other window awnings. All pets were observed on a leash. There is a small, very clean laundry with one washer and dryer, and each was reasonably priced. Verizon cell and MiFi were excellent. Our DISH antenna easily locked onto the western arc. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at D & W Lake Camping and RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Walmart is just a few minutes away. The town of Champaign is also just several minutes away. Our two favorites, Aldi for groceries and Culvers for ice cream were right there. Other than that if you can't find it in Champaign then you probably don't need it!

Elkhart Campground, Elkhart, Indiana

Date of Stay: August, 2019 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This is campground that is easy to get to from all major roads. The roads leading in are wide, paved and in good condition. Customer service was excellent. The roads in the park are a mix of paved and gravel, both in good condition. There are no overhanging trees. The campground in my opinion is made up of two very distinct sections. In the front there is a lot of green grass and all kinds of shade trees. This section appears to be for long time stays. Further in the back where we were put there is little grass and hardly any shade trees. It appears that the short timers are put back here. Back here there is some noise from the Interstate which is within sight. They are also putting in new sites in this section so during the day there was construction noise, dust and dirt. Our site was a pull-through with ample room for the car behind. It was hard packed gravel, level but with no shade. All utilities were convenient to the wet bay. All pets were observed on a leash. OTA channels were adequate. Our DISH antenna was easily able to pick up a signal on the western arch. Verizon cell and MiFi were excellent. There was a laundry room with several machines. It was one of the most expensive we had encountered in a campground. We would stay here again but would choose our site more carefully. We camped at Elkhart Campground in a Motorhome.

Duncan/Gerber Glass and Collision offers good repair services. If you can't find it in Elkhart you don't need it. Plan a visit to the RV Hall of Fame, take a Newmar Factory Tour, same with the Studebaker National Museum. Two places to avoid, The Flippin Cow Burger Joint, lackluster food; and, the Das Dutchman Essenhaus restaurant, the buffet is minimal and just so-so. If you have ever been to an Amish restaurant buffet in Lancaster county, PA this one will definitely disappoint.

Ives Run COE, Tioga, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

This is a nice COE park but campers beware. Aspen and Hawthorne are the only two loops with full hookups. The remaining loops have a variety of sites, some with FHU, some with distant hookups for only water and electric. In addition, it appears that the check-in station is permanently closed. Meaning, according to the sign you must have a reservation when you arrive and you must know what your site number is. If you are coming from the north or south the better route to get here is Route 15/99. Then it is only a short ride on Route 287 thru the town of Tioga - avoid if you can going through Wellsboro. The campground is neat and well taken care of. It is also peaceful and quiet. The road leading in from Route 287 is paved, in good condition, and with no overhanging trees. The roads in the park are also paved, in good condition, but there are some spots with overhanging trees. Our site was paved, back in, easy to get into. It was reasonably level, jacks needed only to stabilize the rig. Site separation was excellent with plenty of green space on either side. Our site was partially shaded. Throughout the campground there is lots of green space and a number of trees. All utilities were convenient to the wet bay. You must use a water pressure regulator since the normal water pressure runs in the area of 75/100 lbs. Verizon cell and MiFi were excellent. DISH antenna had a clear view of the southern sky. This is our second time here and we would return again. We camped at Ives Run COE in a Motorhome.

Wellsboro -grocery, CVS, restaurants, auto parts stores, movie theater, etc. On the way there are several gas stations that offer easy access for RV's of all sizes. Tony's Pizza and the Pen Wells Lounge and Restaurant. Harlan's is a fantastic restaurant for breakfast. Log Cabin has great food. In Mansfield for Chinese buffet, QQ Buffet. In Tioga there is a Citgo gas station which also offers easy access for RV's of all sizes. In terms of attractions, the Corning Glass Museum.

Spring Valley Campground, Cambridge, Ohio

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

This is a great stop when traveling east or west on I-70 since it is only a mile off the exit. The campground appears neat and there is no trash lying around. Customer service was excellent. Registration was no problem. The campground, at least the section I was in, is really in need of some TLC. The roads in the campground are really rough, anything more than an idle and you will empty your shelves. The sites are gravel, at least what's left of it. Weeds are growing up and the sites are no longer well defined. Our site was a pull through, reasonably level, jacks needed only for fine tuning. Site separation was OK, but there was nothing between you and your neighbor. Where I was it was completely open with absolutely no shade. The park, though, has other sections which appear to be shaded. We were in a FHU site but only made use of the electric since we only stayed one night. This was an excellent overnight stop for us and we are glad we stopped. We were near the entrance/exit of the park so in the morning we were on our way within minutes. If you need an overnight stop in this area this would be a great choice. We camped at Spring Valley Campground in a Motorhome.

East Fork State Park, Bethel, Ohio

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

This is a gem of a state park. However, that said for a FHU it is not as inexpensive as most state parks that we have stayed in. There are other electric/water sites that are less expensive and from what I observed they are always full. This is not a hard park to get to, however, make sure if you are using a GPS to enter the address of the campground and not the park administrative office. The two are miles apart and there is no direct road between the two. We found out the hard way. The park is neat and well groomed with no trash lying around. Every time a site is vacated someone is around within an hour to police it and tidy it up. The roads leading in and within the park are paved and in good condition. Customer service was so-so. If you didn't ask, no information was offered. Even when you asked it was hard getting more than a really basic, simple answer. Our site was paved, back in and easy to get in, and perfectly level. It was just wide enough for our rig and just long enough to park the car parallel to the rig in the front. All utilities were convenient to the wet bay. Our site was partially shaded. Verizon cell and MiFi worked well. DISH had a clear view of the southern sky. We would stay here again. We camped at East Fork State Park in a Motorhome.

Make time to visit the Cardboard Boat Museum and the Tri State Warbird Museum. There are several gas stations right outside the gate. Also a Dollar General. At the Sunoco Station is the Bullydog Laundromat that is excellent - clean, many machines all in good order, and inexpensive.

Whispering Hills RV Park, Georgetown, Kentucky

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

This is an easy RV Park to get to. Coming off I-75 follow your GPS or the Blue and White Campground Signs. Rodgers Gap Road is narrow, just take your time. The entrance into the park is well marked, paved and wide. Customer service is excellent. Everyone was very helpful and polite. After check in you are escorted to your site. The roads in the park are hard packed gravel, some small potholes, easy to navigate. There are no overhanging trees. The park appears to be well taken care of. There is no trash lying around. All pets were observed on a leash. There appear to be many full-time residents (owner said about 40%) here with most sites well taken care of. Sites are a mixed bag in terms of being level and convenience of utilities. Our site though a pull through had a bad slope to the right but I was able to get level. Really and truly, if they had just put as much effort in making their campsites level as they did with everything else in this park, it would be a 5-star resort. If you want a level spot with convenient utilities go for either a premium spot or try for a pull through in the range of 142 to 164. Utilities were convenient to the wet bay. Site separation was good. You must use a water pressure regulator! There was no shade but I had room to put out all my awnings. Excellent Verizon signal. Excellent DISH signal. We would stay here again. We camped at Whispering Hills RV Park in a Motorhome.

Baileys Point COE, Glasgow, Kentucky

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

This is another great COE park. The only negative is getting here. Campground is about 30 minutes off of I 65 and the ride in is OK until you get to Baily's Point Road. This is a 3-mile paved road that is narrow, has blind corners and hills, but if you take it slow you will be OK. The roads within the park are narrow, paved and in good condition, but there are a number of overhanging trees that you have to dodge. Make sure you know your site # before you come. Our site was a back in, easy to get into, hard packed gravel, and perfectly level. Site separation was excellent. Our site was partially shaded. We had 50 amp and water. The utilities were behind the rig but within a reasonable distance. All pets were observed on a leash. OTA channels, four bars but did not try. DISH antenna was able to lock on to satellites on the Western Arc. Verizon cell signal was good. MiFi was slow most of the time. This is not a convenient park for a quick stop. If you plan on being in the area for a couple of weeks it would be fine. With that in mind we would stay here again. We camped at Baileys Point COE in a Motorhome.

Two Rivers Campground, Nashville, Tennessee

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $54.00
Overall Rating:

The campground is easy to get to from major highways and our GPS had no problem taking us right to it. The campground is neat, well groomed, well taken care of and with no trash laying around. The campground is sandwiched between two RV dealers, one being Camping World. The roads within the park are paved and in good condition and there are no overhanging trees. Customer service was excellent. Our site was hard packed gravel, back in but with a slope to the right. Site separation was minimal, side to side; and, back to back. I did have enough room to open my patio and window awnings. Our site was FHU but only 30 amp which for the price you pay for the site is a big negative for me. In addition, there is no breaker at the box at the site so you can't turn the power off before you plug in and unplug - another negative in my book. These two negatives were what lowered my rating from a 9 to an 8. Our site had no shade but there are other sites that do offer complete shade. We were able to get a good DISH signal. All pets were observed on a leash. There were no bugs. Our Verizon cell phone and MiFi had good signals. The campground offers WiFi and it is secure and worked well. We would stay here again. We camped at Two Rivers Campground in a Motorhome.

This is Nashville. The Grand Old Opry, Nashville Nightlife Show and Supper, Country Music Hall of Fame, American Pickers at the Marathon Motor Works Building, and the list goes on. The Old Town Trolley tour was excellent and they have a free shuttle that picks up at the campground at 9 am and returns at 1 pm and 5 pm. This is the real reason we stayed here, it was much easier than driving in and trying to find and pay for parking.

Sharon Johnston Park, New Market, Alabama

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This park is an excellent county park for a short or extended stay. It is easy to get to and your GPS will have no problem finding it. There are signs directing you to the park and the entrance to the park is well marked. The roads in the park are paved, wide, and with no overhanging trees. The park appears well taken care of, it is well groomed, and neat and clean. There appear to be a number of those who are long term residents but every site is neat and tidy. I would strongly suggest making a reservation if you want to stay here since the park fills up quickly. When we arrived, we were immediately met by the camp host who took our payment and ensured that we were satisfied with our site. Our site was paved with a slight slope to the front but with some leveling blocks and our jacks we had no problem getting level. There is good site separation and our site was partially shaded. All utilities were convenient to the wet bay. We, however, had an issue with the water hookup in that the water spigot is down below ground level and is partially buried and hard to get to. I had to dig around the spigot handle in order to be able to turn it on and off. There were no bugs. We had no problem with either our Verizon cell phones or MiFi. We were able to get a clear view of the southern sky for our DISH antenna. We would stay here again. We camped at Sharon Johnston Park in a Motorhome.

Davis Lake Campground, Houlka, Mississippi

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

This Park is easy to get to either from Route 15 or The Natchez Trace. We came in from the Trace and the road was a typical rural road. The entrance to the Park is marked so you can't miss the turn in. The roads within the park are easy to navigate, paved and in good condition, and there are no overhanging trees. The Park appears well taken care of and it is well groomed. One big negative for us was the fact that our site was full of cigarette butts. This kept me from giving it a 9 or higher. Our site was paved, level, and all utilities convenient to the wet bay. Since we were right on the lake if we came back here and stayed longer we would pull straight in and run the water hose and electric under the coach. There were no bugs that we had to worry about. Our site had some shade. We had a good Verizon cell phone signal and our Verizon MiFi had good reception. We were able to get a clear view of the southern sky for our DISH antenna. We would stay here again. We camped at Davis Lake Campground in a Motorhome.

Timberlake Campground, Brandon, Mississippi

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This a campground that depending on how you come in can either be real easy to get to, or a real pain since you have to deal with city traffic. So pick your route in carefully. The section we stayed in is new and near the front of the park and appeared to be for short term occupancy. The road into and the roads in the section we stayed in were paved, wide, and with no overhanging trees. The campground is neat, well groomed, there is no trash lying around and it's appearance gives evidence of being well taken care of. The only big negative is the geese that roam freely throughout the park and you know what they leave behind. So, watch your step. We had a nice long, wide, concrete pad. However, it is not level. There is a slope to the front. We needed leveling blocks under our front wheels and our leveling jacks to get ourselves level without lifting the front wheels off the ground. Walking around I noticed that most of the sites in this area are unlevel to some degree. There is good site separation, but nothing between you and your neighbor to give a sense of privacy. Registration was smooth and efficient. In this section you are near the laundry which is a good size with all machines in working order. There is also a really nice pool close by. Verizon WiFi and MiFi was slow but adequate. DISH signal excellent. We would consider staying here again. We camped at Timberlake Campground in a Motorhome.

Natchez State Park, Natchez, Mississippi

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This is a great State Park about 10 miles north of Natchez. When you make the left turn onto Wickcliff Rd the entrance to the Park is half a mile on the right - your GPS will want to take your further down the road, don't. When you turn in to the park the campground is about two miles further in. The roads in and within the park are narrow, they twist and turn, there are some blind hills and there are overhanging trees. In a word, go slow coming in. If you have a reservation you go directly to your site. We never saw the Park Ranger nor the camp host the entire time we were there. The park is neat, well taken care of and there is no trash lying around. Our site was a concrete pad, perfectly level, long enough for the rig and the car but also very narrow. There is good site separation. Most sites are partial or completely shaded. However, we were able to get our DISH antenna to find the satellites on the Western arch with no issue. Our Verizon cell phones worked without an issue. Our Version MiFi was extremely slow at times. All utilities were convenient to the wet bay and worked without issue. The big problem are the bugs and the ticks. I picked up more ticks walking my dog then I have in the past two years traveling full time. Make sure you are well protected when you venture out. We would stay here again. We camped at Natchez State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

On Route 61 there is a Shell gas station 5 miles south of the Park entrance. In Natchez you will find all the stores you need. Visit the Natchez Visitor Reception Center. Take an Open Air Tour, you can book it at the Reception Center. Tour the Auburn House, the Melrose House, The William Johnson House and Forks of the Road. For lunch go to The Camp Restaurant located in the Under the Hill section of town. Their burgers are the best.
