WinStar RV Park, Thackerville, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Great sites, ALL of them. Concrete streets & pads. Shuttle to the casino but it takes to long. Need to put in a walkway to the casino (most campers like to take evening walks). Walking would take less time then the shuttle if there was a direct walkway. Watch out for the sprinklers if you have just washed your RV. They are not the little misters between sites, but big golf course heads. I was awakened during the night with the sprinklers hitting the side of our RV. (note, you are made aware of this upon checkin, which is nice). We camped at WinStar RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Catch the free shuttle to the casino to eat. Lots of choices. We went to the Italy restaurant and it was great. If the shuttle did not take so long would have gone back to the casino for breakfast (they have an IHOP).

Very nice park. Lots of trees for shade but low limbs all trimmed. Site was level & long. A very big & spacious site for a KOA. Would stay here again for sure. We camped at Salina KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Avoid the "Petrol" truck plaza as you come or go to the campground. I needed a few pounds of air in a tire. Filled up then looked for the air pump. Went inside to ask where it was and was told they don't have a air pump. A truck plaza / truck stop without a air pump, give me a break! Go to the other big stations across the street.

Devils Tower / Black Hills KOA, Devils Tower, Wyoming

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $70.00
Overall Rating:

Wonderful location, can't be beat. Huge nice area for tenters. Would stay here again no matter what the cost. Shortcommings: lots of flies, could not eat outside. Laundry - only 4 washers & dryers, with workcampers slowly folding their items on top of the dryer while 3 "paying guests" waiting for a dryer. Also have never seen so many flies inside a building. Trip hazzards - close to our site, belonging to the campground, lots of hoses & electric extension cords laying on the ground, a trip waiting to happen as guests walk to restrooms at night. Restaurant - one dinner, flies and the worst mashed potatoes & gravy have ever had in my life, one bite and unable to eat. A lady asked a server about going out the back door of the dining room. This was a clearly marked emergency exit.... a lit exit sign above it. Server replied that this door is always deadbolted. This is a huge life safety violation and a big libiality for the KOA campground. Do they really have that big a problem with RV'ers running out the back door without paying? Or are they just to lazy to unlock the door in the morning & lock it back upon closing. Movie. On our last night we looked forward to taking the grandkids to seeing the Close Encounters movie. It is on a TV outside with about 70 seats. One would think that watching the movie with Devil's Tower behind it would be a highlight, but the trees behind the TV block out the Tower completely. Worst thing -- about 3/4 into the movie, just as they were getting to Devil's Tower, the screen went blank except for a big Face Book logo. A "full house" of guests wondered what to do as the office was closed and no staff to be found. Everyone driffed away very disappointed. Bummer, bummer end to our stay at the campground. We camped at Devils Tower / Black Hills KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Go out at midnight to look at the stars. The campground had a decent supply of food & other items, at a reasonable price. Nothing else around.

Mount Rushmore KOA at Palmer Gulch, Hill City, South Dakota

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $80.00
Overall Rating:

The name says "gulch" and that is true--our site was mud & water. In many years of RVing this was the worst site ever had. Not cheap either! Although I had a reservation months ahead and they knew the size of our trailer, we were assigned a back-in where the gravel was very short & skinny. Tow vehicle blocked the road to unhook. A work-camper took us to the site & helped back in but he had our left tires off the gravel. I unhooked and then realized the tires were sinking in the mud. Had to hitch back up, (again blocking the road) and get left & right tires on the gravel with only inches to spare. The gravel was only about 9' wide & 18' long for my 28' trailer. The steps came down into the mud. Had to build up the rear jacks with wood blocks in the small ditch with standing water. There was nothing behind us but open area. It would be so easy to put in a small pipe in the ditch, cover it, add gravel and make this site longer. But a big company runs this KOA, at full occupancy, so looks like they have no reason to make the sites better. The site next to us had a lake under their class C the entire week we stayed. Two sites down a back hoe had to pull out a RV that was stuck in the mud. Three sites down many plywood sheets were laid down so the people could get to their steps. The streets were mud, the sites were mud, and they never drained & dried out even on sunny days. Traffic on the mud street in front of us was unbelievable. Not just RVs , ATVs, and the usual garbage trucks, but huge dump trucks the size of 18-wheelers (but with 26 wheels), with masses of little kids walking & on bikes in the mud streets. Restaurant - ate breakfast; flies & very hot in the dining room (guess that's why we were the only ones in the dining room). With zillions of kids walking around without parents, the pool gate self closer did not work. It was open all the time! But no employee could see this huge safety violation. We camped at Mount Rushmore KOA at Palmer Gulch in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

This KOA is the closest to Mt. Rushmore (5 miles) but would advise staying at a "normal" campground just a few miles further. This place was a muddy zoo. Enjoyed an afternoon it Hill City. Really nice train museum and easy free parking all around town. The Needles highway was great, but don't take an RV due to the one lane tunnels carved it the rocks.

River View RV Park & Resort, Vidalia, Louisiana

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Very nice park. Easy 5 minute drive into Natchez. Had a Prime site (first row from the river). Can't see the river from campsite due to a berm, bush growth, and a few trees, so save the $5 and take the next row. Nice walkway along the river on the berm. Felt safe walking even at night. Great place to ride bikes. We took our chairs and enjoyed sitting on the walkway in the evenings and just enjoying the river. Level cement site, perfect utilities. Would for sure stay here again. We camped at River View RV Park & Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Desert Willow RV Park, Van Horn, Texas

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

Arrived late afternoon. Had a pull through in center. Enjoyed drinks & dinner at the El Capitan hotel. It's only a 3 block walk and that is why we picked this overnight campground. Utilities were good and where they should be. All was well until shortly after we went to bed around 10pm. Around 10:30, with our shades closed, we were awakened by very bright lights lighting up our trailer. I though it must be just a camper pulling in and setting up. But the lights never went off. Our bedroom was lit up like a football stadium! I looked out the door and a big pickup was backed in the space right behind us with the bright headlights on, lighting up us and the trailer next to us. From the looks of the RV it must have been a permenent 5th wheel, perhaps they just came home from work. THEN the music started. The bright lights and music lasted several hours. What a jerk slug, rude rude rude. Of course, at this budget campground there is not resident manager or security, and I was not about to confront such a kncklehead. Upon pulling out at 9am the next day I stopped at the office to complain, but the office was closed. So if you do stay here keep far away from anything that looks like a permenant RV, or you may get a bad night of sleep. We camped at Desert Willow RV Park in a Travel Trailer.
