Manistique Lakeshore Campground, Manistique, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

This is a super clean, very new (opened four years ago) park. Nice sites with vegetation between, fancy schmancy utility hook up, and very nice staff. There's even amble parking for a towed vehicle. We had been at no hook up sites for a few days & looked forward to a loooong shower and air conditioning. I knocked a few points off for a couple of reasons. First, this is right on the shore of Lake Michigan. The beach was a sandy strip with heaps of drift wood on it. There wasn't really a way to get into the water or to set up a chair on the sand. Second was a small adjacent boardwalk area with a Kitschey beach shop, small restaurant, etc. All were deserted or closed, on a holiday weekend. The real boardwalk along Lake Michigan was another mile down the road from the campground. The campground is very nice, but the lack of anything nearby to see or do led us to depart after just one night. We'd stay here again as an overnight stop on the way to somewhere else. We camped at Manistique Lakeshore Campground in a Motorhome.

Prentice Park, Ashland, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $5.00
Overall Rating:

THIS REVIEW IS OF THE OVERFLOW LOT, NOT THE RV CAMPGROUND. We stopped in the early evening of a holiday weekend & all the sites were taken. The parks & rec people sent us over to the power plant overflow parking lot. No hookups, but it sure was cheap. We were on the shore of Lake Superior. Not near, but just 15' from the water. However, we were all alone in an industrial area. We checked the crime stats and Ashland has the number one worst crime rate in all of Wisconsin. A quick call to the local police wasn't reassuring. Without any other RVers there, we decided to bug out. We camped at Prentice Park in a Motorhome.

Makoshika State Park, Glendive, Montana

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

I'm from east of the Mississippi and I'm not accustomed to driving through a neighborhood, popping out into a large state park full of rock formations. Pretty cool rocks and tons of walking/biking paths. Nice, but difficult-looking, disc golf course, too. I'm not scoring it higher because $28 is a lot for no hookups, pit toilets, no dump station, and the only water was 1.5 miles away at the visitors center. The $28 is for a non-Montana resident. Our site looked like it had just been repaved. The whole park looked to be in excellent condition. Camp hosts were excellent, driving us to our site and then stopping by later to check on us. We camped at Makoshika State Park in a Motorhome.

Red River State Recreation Campground, East Grand Forks, Minnesota

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

What a great find! Although located in the city of East Grand Forks, it's quiet & very pleasant. There's a bit of road noise, but it drops off after 9 p.m. Within a 10 minute walk is a movie theatre and several restaurants along the river. There is a 20 mile bike/walking path adjacent to the park and right on the river, too. Most of the sites are very large and have a circular "driveway" to park on. There is a $7 access fee that you'll need to add the the $33 above. Even at $40, for a full hook up site, this is a great deal. We camped at Red River State Recreation Campground in a Motorhome.

Pine Creek Campground, Livingston, Montana

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

The only reason I'm not rating this a 10 is the steep 2.4 mile single lane road in. I made the drive in a 32' motorhome & wouldn't recommend anything longer due to all the twists & turns & having to move for oncoming traffic. Otherwise, this campground is awesome. The quietest we've stayed at in 15 years of RVing. Large, spacious sites with lots of vegetation between sites. The campground hosts were very friendly and keep the campground neat as a pin. It's a bit of a long drive from Gardiner/Yellowstone for daily visits to the park. However, it worked great for us since we were leaving the area for this trip. We camped at Pine Creek Campground in a Motorhome.

Gros Ventre Campground (Concessionaire Operated), Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This was our first attempt at camping in a national park. We were kinda scared of not having hook-ups, but we've been cured of that now! The price shown is the non-senior/non-accessible full price. For the convenience of being right in the park, you can't beat the cost. It's located at the south end of Grand Teton NP and about 5 miles off the main road. The trip from the campsite to the visitor's center was less than 15 minutes. Great wildlife viewing just outside the park and the famous Moulton Barn is less than 10 minutes away. We arrived after 6:30 p.m. & had to figure out the whole process without help from the office. We found a site, backed in, then discovered our neighbor had the world's loudest generator that he ran constantly. After dinner and during a stroll around the campground, we found several more sites that would fit our 32' MH. We decided to move to a non-loop site which was much larger, had no neighbors, and backed up to a huge meadow. Since we were using the MH as our touring car, we just stopped at the neat & tidy dump station at the CG entrance & dumped our gray water & refilled the fresh as needed. If you want electric-only hook-ups, they do have one loop that offers them. However, we thought the sites were a bit too cozy. If you want no generator noise at all, they offer a loop for smaller RVs and tents without generator use allowed. This was a great first experience and we're looking forward to booking more off-the-grid sites. We camped at Gros Ventre Campground (Concessionaire Operated) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If you bring your bicycle, there are trails that parallel most of the main roads. Photography of the mountains is great in the early morning, but remember to shoot some sunsets, too. Our portable solar panel was easy to place and could get full sun almost all day. If you're using a satellite receiver on this site, there is no trees to block the signal.

Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort, Hill City, South Dakota

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $72.00
Overall Rating:

This is our second stay here. This time, we were on the Line Camp area. Rafter J is more like five different campgrounds instead of a huge 200 site field. Lots of space between areas and between sites. Really nice grounds and facilities. One of the better camp stores we've seen in 15 years. The one complaint I have from this visit was being uphill from the four lane highway. You'll get a LOT of traffic noise. We camped at Rafter J Bar Ranch Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

Badlands / White River KOA, Interior, South Dakota

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $55.00
Overall Rating:

Well, it's a KOA in a national park so it's going to have tiny sites jammed in close. Having the neighbor's utility hook up less than four feet from our door and aligned with our firepit was a bit too close for us. You are paying for convenience of being 5 minutes outside of the Badlands. If you don't need hookups, there are no cost National Forest dispersed campsites nearby the entrance to the Badlands. We camped at Badlands / White River KOA in a Motorhome.

Oakwoods Trails Campground, Austin, Minnesota

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Really nice little campground behind a working farm. Super quiet and heavily wooded (on site 9). Awesome hosts. Sites 9 and 10 share a circular drive so they'd be good to share if camping with another family. They do not take credit cards so have some cash on hand. Roads were no problem for our 32' class C motorhome. A tiny bit pricey for a water/electric site, but the quiet was worth it. We camped at Oakwoods Trails Campground in a Motorhome.

Charles Mears State Park, Pentwater, Michigan

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

Even on a very busy Memorial Day weekend, lots of staff were present to keep the park in tip-top condition. Really nice park right on the shore of Lake Michigan so you're semi-guaranteed a beautiful sunset every night. Just a few minutes' walk to the small town of Pentwater for quaint shops and the mandatory ice cream stop. Immense beach area that has a segregated area for dogs (near the light house) so you can dip your dog. When I had a long trailer and big truck, I experienced a lot of "pucker factor" when navigating through the park. It's pretty darn tight on corners and backing into spots. With my tiny 32' motorhome, I have to trouble getting to my site and backing in. We camped at Charles Mears State Park in a Motorhome.

Twin Lakes Catfish Farm and Campground, Baxter, Tennessee

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Quite close to Tennessee Tech. We stayed there while rooting for our son's Miami University racing team at a SAE event at TTU. Very quiet, a lot of seasonals (but what park doesn't have those?), and a tiny bit seedy, but offers a good value for somewhere to stay for a night or two. I'm not a fisherman so the appeal of the catfish lakes is lost on me. We ate at the restaurant and I'd give them a B-. Just not our cup of tea, but a lot of value-priced choices on the menu. We camped at Twin Lakes Catfish Farm and Campground in a Motorhome.

William C. Sterling State Park, Monroe, Michigan

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Nice park just a stone's throw from the Detroit Metro area. Located on Lake Erie with all sorts of inlets and islands nearby. Lots of fishing opportunities and a generously sized boat launch. Usually there's a breeze off the lake to disperse a lot of the campfire smoke. Sites on outside loop are quite large, but have electric only. The full hookup sites are a bit tighter. A few years ago, Sterling lost most of their trees to Asian ash borers so there's not much shade yet. Sterling has one of the biggest dump stations I've seen in a state park so you shouldn't have to wait a long time on Sunday to hit the road. Really nice paved walking/biking trails throughout. These trails also connect to the Monroe Historic Trails so you can walk your feet off if you want to. We camped at William C. Sterling State Park in a Motorhome.

Sauder Village Campground, Archbold, Ohio

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

A very quiet, pleasant campground near Historic Sauder Village. Even from the far back portion of the campground, the village, restaurant, bakery were just a 10-15 walk. Site was pretty level, but we still used our leveling jacks to lift the front a bit. Utilities were in top notch condition and located on the driver's side of the rig. We had five bars with Verizon 4G, but the campground wifi was awesome. Even on a weekend, we had a pretty good connection that was suitable for email and light browsing. In between the two campground loops was a nice walking trail of about a mile through the cornfields. It had shade trees and benches every so often for resting. Evening walks are accompanied by fireflies. The restrooms/showers were clean and had ice available for a reasonable fee. Firewood is available on your way in from a self service shed. There is a train about a half mile away, but it wasn't loud enough to wake us up. The back loop has no mature trees, but they have young ones planted next to each site. In addition to the group firepits, each site has its own firering. Another thing we noticed was how wide the roads were. Big rigs should have no problem getting around, backing in, etc. We camped at Sauder Village Campground in a Motorhome.

Warwick Conservation Area, Lambton Shores, Ontario

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $52.00
Overall Rating:

When you exit the 401, follow your phone or GPS. There is signage that points to WARWICK CONSERVATION AREA in the opposite direction to the GPS, but the route is not well marked. We had to drive about 10 miles to find somewhere to turn around. When we arrived, the check in station was closed. We were assigned a site that does not appear on the campground map. Haven't had this happen in 15 years of RVing, but I thought we could figure this out. After lapping the campground three times in the dark, I decided to call the emergency number. Left a message that didn't get returned for over two hours after we were already asleep. I ended up backing into an empty spot and hoped it wasn't reserved already. 90% of the sites are seasonal RVs in a variety of conditions. Site was electric only which makes the $52 Canadian really expensive. Site was very short so we had to stuff our 32' motorhome in diagonally. Roads are very narrow and would be difficult in a larger rig. This is way out in the boonies so make sure you get provisions before setting up camp. Power pedestal had a single 30 Amp outlet, no breakers, no other outlets. We camped at Warwick Conservation Area in a Motorhome.

KOA in a semi-rural area about 30 minutes south of Montreal. Very quiet at night for such a large campground. Site was small, but mostly level. Hook ups were in good shape, but my site was 50 Amp only. The office loaned me an adapter for my 30 Amp RV. . Wifi is serviceable, but does boot you off often. Tips for other Campers:

We preferred going to the area adjacent to Old Montreal on the waterfront. Street performers, musicians, restaurants, and shopping aplenty here.

Gray Line offers pickup from the KOA to take you into Montreal for $65/person. This gives you two days of shuttling to/from Montreal. They pick you up at about 9:30 am. After a 30-40 minute ride into Montreal, you get unlimited use of Gray Line's doubledecker route. Guides onboard point out the sights for you. Down side of this offer is that the bus back to the KOA leaves PROMPTLY at 5 pm, so you end up with a time slot of about 10:15 to 5. Your other choices include a $40 taxi ride to the rail station or a $80 taxi ride into the city
