About Julie and Ray

We are full-time RVers since 10/2017. Once we get to an area, we do a lot of exploring. We don't do much sitting around in the park/socializing/using amenities. So, we love simple, inexpensive, quiet places to stay. Our reviews are based on those criteria.

Camp Lakewood Campground & RV Park, Effingham, Illinois

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $39.00
Overall Rating:

We really like this campground. So close to shopping, etc., but very little noise. That impressed us! Sites gravel and pretty level. Good water, power, sewer connections. Very nice wooded setting. There appears to be some long-termers, but sites were well kept. We were in a section with about 10 sites for short-timers and there was only one other rig. Where did they put him? Right next to us. Can't quite figure that one out. Site was very long. Our 26-footer fit and our toad could have been parked in front or in back of the rig. Didn't give the full 5 star rating due to being pricey. Our feeling is that they are about 15% too high - even with the Good Sam discount. We camped at Camp Lakewood Campground & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Bootheel RV Park and Event Center (formerly Hayti-Portageville RV Park, Portageville, Missouri

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

Nice, no-frills park. Good power and water. Spacious, level gravel sites with easily traversed interior roads. The only thing keeping this park from a 10 rating is the highway noise. It's pretty significant. I don't know who the Einstein is at MODOT that decided to put the shoulder growlers right on the shoulder lines instead of outside them, but he should be FIRED!! Constant traffic noise isn't bad, but those growlers are MUCH louder than regular traffic going by. Be prepared to run a fan or A/C to drown it out. We did have a ignorant dog owner right next door who ignored the "dogs must be on a leash" rule every single day, but that's not the park's fault. We camped at Bootheel RV Park and Event Center (formerly Hayti-Portageville RV Park in a Motorhome.

J.B.'s RV Park & Campground, Benton, Arkansas

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

(Nightly rate based on weekly rate). We love this park. We're all about no-frills, affordable parks and this one fits the bill perfectly. Right off the interstate but very little road noise. Nice level spots with good water and electric. There are only about nine nightly/weekly spots with all the permanent folks in the back. The spot was long enough that we could have parked the toad in front of or behind the MH. Owners/Managers are super nice and will give you tips on things to do in the area. We wish there was a place like this everywhere we stay. A+ We camped at J.B.'s RV Park & Campground in a Motorhome.

Marquee On The Bay RV Resort, Dickinson, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

(Rate based on monthly with gazebo, plus electricity). We love this place. The owner/manager is the nicest person you'll ever meet. The roads are easy to navigate, and the sites are concrete, level and huge - room enough for the longest rig and two vehicles. Good power and water, logically located. Cable TV on site and plenty of over-the-air channels too. The pool looked very nice and well maintained, but it never got warm enough to check it out. The only thing keeping them from a perfect rating is the internet, basically non-existent. We were there for four months and never once was able to connect, even right next to the office. The downside stuff is all out of their control. There are lots of local workers here and at the park next door. These guys must have some major compensation issues as they all seem to drive ridiculously big, loud vehicles. Our site was right next to the road leading to/from the park next door and they REALLY have the local workers over there as traffic was constant and loud. We can't forget the ever-present ignorant dog owners. Not here, but next door and in the neighborhood. We would definitely return here but would choose a spot away from the road next door. Three Walmarts within 15-20 minutes (closest north, also northwest and southwest). Easy, quick trip down to Galveston - south on 146. We camped at Marquee On The Bay RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Carthage RV Campground, Carthage, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

We liked this park. First impression is the staff and they were great. Showed us to our site in a golf cart. Hook ups are weirdly located at the rear of the site which causes you to park at the very back of the site in order to reach them. Huge, level concrete site with good separation between neighbors. Good Verizon and AT&T signals. Park wifi spotty, kept going in and out. We were in the back so not too much traffic noise but there were train whistles nearby, several per night, each whistling at a lot of crossings. Interior road navigation was super easy, again plenty of room. I do think they are WAY overpriced. They should be 10-20% cheaper. We stayed four nights but at this price, if we stayed again, it would only be for one night. We camped at Carthage RV Campground in a Motorhome.

Cedar Lake Bible Retreat & RV Park, Cedar Lake, Indiana

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This place is a hidden gem! The staff is the nicest we have ever encountered. We made somewhat last minute reservations as we unexpectedly needed to stay the entire summer. They went out of their way to accommodate us with a minimum of movement - even after extending for two extra weeks. Very reasonably priced (stated price was based on monthly rates - and INCLUDES electricity). Sites are back-in and roomy. Larger sites allow for toad parking on site while smaller sites have a spot right across the access road. Well laid out for the space. Some power only sites and some full hook-up. Power was good and clean and the Wifi was the absolute best we have ever experienced in an RV park. It was a little shaky when the weekend warriors were here, but M-F it was outstanding. The bathroom/shower building is nice and kept clean. What's keeping our rating from being a "10" is the water. It's pretty gross. If you can fill up with good water prior to arrival, I would recommend that. For three months, we had no choice but to suffer through smelly showers. Other than that, we couldn't be happier. We camped at Cedar Lake Bible Retreat & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort, Marengo, Illinois

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

(Rate based on a monthly stay and includes extra electricity charge.) There sure are a lot of negative reviews about this place. Thankfully our stay was apparently much better then most.

We stayed for a month and got a great spot with full hook-up and clean power. The water was well water and did smell, but all the water in the area is like that. On check-in day, we called to verify the time we could arrive. We were told the wrong time but the office staff went out of their way to get us checked in early so we wouldn't have to sit and wait for hours. We found the staff and groundskeepers to be very friendly.

We didn't use the bathrooms, showers or laundry, nor did we opt for the cable TV. The internet was typical for campgrounds, not very good. On-site propane is a HUGE plus!! Some of the roads are bad, but we simply avoided those.

If I could change one thing it would be that they don't accept credit cards. You also have to pay by cash or check and give a separate electric deposit upon arrival, from which they deduct your electricity use and mail you the balance in the form of a check. Our arrived a full month after we left. I'd love to see them move into the 80s and get a credit card machine. All in all, our stay was very pleasant!! We camped at Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Warren County Fairgrounds, Indianola, Iowa

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

We were very excited to try a fairground campground for the first time. $18/night for 30 amp and water only seemed a little high, but we decided to give it a go. The good points are that the site is very level and there was only one other RV (first come-first served u-pick-a-site, pay at the box). Now the bad...there was supposed to be water at the site. Mid-April and the water is still shut off. No mention of that on their website. Thankfully we had some water in the tank. There are also rest rooms, showers and garbage bins on site. All three, LOCKED UP. No mention of that on the website either. The noise from the road, which is very close, was constant. Coming into town there is a sign that reads "Noise Ordinance Enforced". Don't believe it! There must be no muffler shop in this town. Apparently the nearby neighbors leave their dogs out all night as there was almost constant barking - maybe it was strays, but regardless, barking all night. Power tripped our over-voltage breaker. As a bonus we were treated to a bum and his dog sleeping in the picnic shelter right behind our rig, in the morning leaving a big puddle of urine and tossing his trash on the ground next to the garbage bins (because they were locked up). One or two patrol car pass throughs a night would be welcome. We will not be staying here again. We camped at Warren County Fairgrounds in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Good no-frills park, a bit on the expensive side. Campground host lady was fantastic! She was always available via phone. We decided to stay an extra night and she accommodated us no sweat. There were many residents: their sites were very well kept. Site was easy in-easy out, level, good power & water. All, including sewer, were conveniently located. Length of site was a bit tight, but RV and car did barely fit. Right next to the airport but not a lot of noise. We camped at Forbes Landing RV Park in a Motorhome.

Cimarron RV Park, Stillwater, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

This is another of the inexpensive, "no-frills" RV Parks that we love so much. Once again, rating it for what it is - not comparing against "resorts". Left message when calling for reservation and owner/manager called me right back. Super nice folks!! We had a pull through site, gravel & grass. There was a bit of a slope to our site so we had to level. Well water, good pressure, tasted ok after going through our filter. Had a couple over-voltage trips. Good Verizon and AT&T cell signals. Looked like there were some residents - a schools bus picked up and dumped off a kid each day. That area appeared well kept. There was an above average level of road noise, but it was COLD so we didn't hear it at night. Wish we could find a park like this in every place we stay. We would DEFINITELY return here!! Overall Rating:

We LOVE this park!!!! Rating it for what it is - no frills, no crowds, no families, NO KIDS!!!!! You are not paying for extras that you don't need. PA discount makes this so affordable we couldn't pass it up. Big, level sites, good water, we had over-voltage issues the first day but the wind was gusting over 50mph so we can cut them some slack. When the winds died down, no electric issues (50 amp). Restrooms with showers are a little old but there. Self check-in/check-out, just put the envelope with your payment in the box. I wish there was a park like this in every city we visit and we would DEFINITELY stay here again and again. LOVE IT!!! We camped at Double D RV Park in a Motorhome.

Cactus RV Park (CLOSED), Tucumcari, New Mexico

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $29.00
Overall Rating:

Descent place to spend the night. PA discount wasn't much as they give a "discount" for just about everything. Neat and clean. Got a little attitude when I called to make the reservation, but they were very nice once we arrived. They escorted us to our site which was right in front - adjacent to the road. This was somewhat strange since the park was almost empty - and when the only two other RVs came in, they were put immediately to either side of us. Couldn't you space us out just a bit since there were so many empty sites? Power was just ok, breaker kept tripping so I plugged in next door and asked them to take a look. They did promptly, and he had me move my plug back to our site so it didn't "mess them up". Again, couldn't you have put the next guy in one of the many open spots and not right next to us? Anyway, we plugged back in and it only tripped three or four times the rest of the two-day stay. The heat pump was on most of the night as it was chilly, so the road noise didn't bother us much. For an over-nighter, it's sufficient. The layout of the front part is somewhat strange. Our site didn't allow for our toad behind the RV as that was access to the site next to us. We parked adjacent to the rig. We camped at Cactus RV Park (CLOSED) in a Motorhome.

Grand Canyon Railway RV Park, Williams, Arizona

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This is a really nice park in a cool little town. Large, level concrete sites with picnic table. Conveniently located full hookups (30/50). The water spigots had a funky little nodule attached which caused several that I saw (including ours) to leak a little, not seriously though. Clean rest rooms and nice laundry room, though a little pricey (1.75 wash/1.50 dry) but inline with the town laundromat. Conveniently located to just about everything, especially the namesake train. That's a double edged sword as the train whistles are quite close, but thankfully not too often at night. Park provided wifi was good most of the time. Slowed during the evening or when I was trying to upload photos to Facebook. Cell phone coverage was excellent. Check-in/check-out folks are very friendly!! They will give you a list of rules, several of which we saw being broken during our three night stay. If you are going to have rules, please enforce them!! That lack of enforcement keeps them from a perfect score. We camped at Grand Canyon Railway RV Park in a Motorhome.

After doing the usual things, check with the Park Service office in town for info on Bill William Mountain. There is a path that leads all the way tot he top. A GREAT hike for those who can make the 4½ mile, 2,000 ft elevation gain journey. If you can't, there's also a road that leads to the top. On the way to the mountain, stop at the Santa Fe Dam which you can walk across.
