Markin Glen County Park, Kalamazoo, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed over a hot July 4 holiday. Needed reservations early as most weekends the campground fills. Would describe as big rig friendly even though our neighbor across the road was happy to move a toad, so we could straighten our 40 foot fiver with long wheelbase truck. Nice large, level, patio width cement pads with firepit and modern picnic tables. 50/30 FHU utility pedestals located conveniently to each site and functioned well. Grass between sites and asphalt drives made for a clean experience. Both pull throughs and back ins available. Campground is part of a Kalamazoo County Park featuring a couple of large ponds with perimeter paved walking trails, a well maintained swimming beach, playgrounds, picnic pavilions, tennis courts, and open areas. Excellent leashed dog walk paths. A western annex to the park provides more short hiking trails and a well constructed, wooded, mountain biking trail system. Kalamazoo Nature Center, a couple of miles north of the park, can make an excellent day trip for families. We camped at Markin Glen County Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Leake County Water Park, Lena, Mississippi

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Our first RV experience in Mississippi, partially selected on previous reviews. We were directed by gps, from southeast of the park, across some county roads not suitable for a big rig. Too narrow, without shoulders. Try to approach the park from either east or west on Hwy 25. Much better. We arrived to a soggy campground due to unusually heavy rain, flooding the adjacent river and other area campgrounds. Upon arrival on a Sunday PM, we found only one open site long enough fo a 40 foot fifth wheel. No reservations accepted. Half the sites were taken with monthly rentals with very few campers on site. Self service check in OK, with cash or check, and the price was right. Never saw any park personnel although grounds are obviously well cared for. Biking, fishing and campfires appeared to be the primary recreation. A beautiful swimming pool was maintained for the busy season. Walking was limited to the park roads. No good trails for hiking or dog walking found. Utilities worked well but be certain to use a water pressure regulator for high pressure. Beautiful bathouse and laundry facility. Unfortunately the wahers and dryers were in need of maintenance or replacement. They ate quarters and performed poorly. Cozy park with very friendly neighboring campers to make you feel welcome. We camped at Leake County Water Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Deer Run RV Resort, Crossville, Tennessee

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Arrived during an unusual cold spell. Was assigned a large, beautiful drive through, fhu site overlooking a lake complete with a large wood deck/patio. $41 daily rate included taxes and Good Sam discount. Grounds were clean and park roads were well maintained with considerable space for safe dog walking. Only a handful of campers in rest of park, mostly longer term patrons. Most sites were nearby adjacent sites, level and of crushed limestone. Some were separated by low fences as part of terracing to help maintain level. Utility hookups were positioned well for our large fifth wheel. We lost power for a few hours and later a water shutoff for repair of an underground leak, possibly freeze related. Fortunately we had filled our onboard tank since we had to unhook water hose for extreme cold in evening. Was checked in and well taken care of by manager who was wearing many hats while owners were away, including maintenance, propane fill, water line repair, etc. Looks like a popular summer destination with many activities. Will definitely return for short stopovers between our north - south travels. We camped at Deer Run RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Lake Snowden, Albany, Ohio

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

Visited late October for a long weekend. Convenient to grandkids in Athens. A few transient spots appear to be set aside for large rigs, mostly in the wooded Hilltop loop. Most large sites were occupied by seasonal units. Many smaller sites were available in other loops. There are many water supply hydrants located through the camp so several sites are within a 100 foot hose reach. Nice dog walk trail along east side of lake. Sites are primarily sharp crushed stone, closely spaced, most with a slight to moderate grade. Our site was featured with hickory and oak trees with falling nuts pounding the roof. Bath house functional but poorly maintained, windows open with cranks removed during cold temps, no toilet paper, infrequent cleaning. Close to US-50 so expect highway noise. Will probably return again to visit family since we are fully contained, based only on convenience to Athens. We camped at Lake Snowden in a Fifth Wheel.

Summit Lake State Park, New Castle, Indiana

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Visited mid October for a two day stop off. Camp is remote, quiet with a good boat launch into a no wake fishing lake. Wooded sites are primarily crushed rock, moderate spacing with water and 50 amp service. Water stations are shared between sites so a longer hose is recommended. Wooded lots have slight to moderate grade, several with direct lake access. There are also many level, full sun sites in grassy area. Bath house was freshly painted with even fresher spider webs that are not routinely removed. Otherwise functional. Several well maintained easy walking trails to wear out dogs and their owners. Our wooded site was frequently dropping hickory nuts on the roof for added excitement. Probably limited to this time of year. Overall a nice state park that we will return to for future leisurely stop offs. We camped at Summit Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Summer Breeze Campground, Iron Mountain, Michigan

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Husband and wife team. Wife checked my husband and I in. She was very unprofessional. I smiled and said hi and she would not even say hi to me or give me even half a glance. But she was quite friendly with my husband. Sites are gravel and clean. I felt as though I was camping in someone's back yard. Not really a real campground atmosphere. There's one trail that is nice. Has a pool but at the time we were there it was to cold to swim. Laundry is 2 small washers and 2 dryers, new and very nice. Will I stay here again? No! We have stayed at many campgrounds and I have never been treated this bad any where else. Beware also lots of ticks! We camped at Summer Breeze Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Gulf State Park Campground, Gulf Shores, Alabama

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Huge state park including a golf course, nature center and a long pier into the ocean. Approximately 500 camp sites, easily accessible and many that can accommodate our 41 foot fifth wheel. Many campers are long term and seasonal snowbirds and reserve a year in advance. Park boasts of many miles of trails. Unfortunately most are not in easy access by walking. A bicycle is almost a must and can be rented. There is considerable local advice and warnings about alligator and snake activity in the park. Many park sponsored activities. Nice laundry facility, however expensive. Many wifi antennas observed but apparently not functional. Only wifi access was noted to be in golf clubhouse. Very touristy area with 10 percent sales tax. We will probably not return as this was not a peaceful or private campground to relax in. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Hocking Hills State Park, Logan, Ohio

Date of Stay: February, 2017 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Beautiful state park. Plenty of sites available this time of year even for our 41' fifth wheel. Site was level and spacious enough for an easy setup. Water fill at bath house since it is turned off at site. Plenty of room for our newfoundlands to explore. We stayed 4 days during which we experienced 2 days of drenching thunderstorms. However, site and park drained well. Will return again and enjoy more of the excellent trail system, hopefully under drier conditions. We camped at Hocking Hills State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
