Sand Creek Campground, Chesterton, Indiana

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

This park is definitely weird, but doesn't deserve the terrible reviews it has. We gambled on staying here because another park was full. There are lots of low hanging branches at the entrance that smacked our RV - this should be a basic maintenance thing that RV parks do, so no excuses. Shabby sign at the entrance too, doesn't give the best impression. There are also some religious overtones including a large metal cross and religious pamphlets in the office. There is hardly anyone here, the poor reviews probably scare most people away. $41 a night for a W&E only site...very expensive IMO for the area (cornfields). All of that said, this isn't a bad place to stay. We didn't use the bathrooms or the pool so we can't comment on that. Our electric and water have been fine, although the hookups are old. The park has been quiet and feels safe. Property manager is polite, but not friendly. I suspect cultural differences, I don't think she's trying to be rude. This is a strange place, but not a bad place. We camped at Sand Creek Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Sunny's Campground, Wauseon, Ohio

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is a good deal with Passport America, but it is only valid M-T. They wanted to charge us extra if we used our air conditioner. Why not just raise rates by 1 or 2 dollars overall and let people use their A/Cs? Was warned that this is strictly enforced. Nickel and diming your campers is not cool. Other than that, this place was good for an overnight stop. We had no problems with any of the utilities and our daughter liked the playground and lake. Lots of perm sites but most of them were very well kept, just some were very old. We camped at Sunny's Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Distant Drums RV Resort, Camp Verde, Arizona

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This place could only accommodate us for 6 days (we wanted a week) so we got stuck paying the daily rate, making for a very expensive stay. We were parked in Site 66 which is EXTREMELY tight - even the camp host told us he doubted we'd fit with a 36' fifth wheel and he told the office not to put any fifth wheels there - but alas, they told us Site 66 or we had to leave because they had no other spots. We managed to get in after a stressful time backing up about 20 times. The host was helpful backing us in. The pool, hot tub, fitness center, and laundry room were all nice. Only 4 washers and constantly a line for the laundry room - they could use more washers. I will echo everyone else when I say the spots are VERY small. Between our truck and our fifth wheel we had about 5 square feet of room for our daughter to play outside. We literally had other RV's feet from ours on all sides. Water, electric, sewer - all fine. Didn't try the cable. Office staff exceptionally nice and helpful. Overall we did not like the cramped quarters and having to pay such a high rate for 6 days. It would have been nice if they gave us weekly and just let us stay 6, it would have saved us $$. No playground for kids was a slight negative for us - we did see other kids there too. Otherwise the park itself was clean and well managed. We camped at Distant Drums RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Lake Pleasant Regional Park, Morristown, Arizona

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

This rating is for dry camping on the shoreline. There are no rules here - it's the Wild Wild West! We were told by the camp host that no one patrols the area but the Sheriff, so things get out of control. Loud music at all hours of the night, people going 50MPH through the parking lot with kids on the driver's lap, people getting drunk and driving their car into the water. This place is beautiful but the staff is not helpful and the sheriff clearly doesn't care to ensure a safe, peaceful environment. We camped at Lake Pleasant Regional Park in a Motorhome.

The Ranch - Escapees Park (members only), Lakewood, New Mexico

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

Great hookups here. No problems with the water, sewer, or power. Laundry facilities clean and reasonably priced but I did not like that you had to sign up for a time slot to do your laundry. The residents here are very, very nice - but there is nothing to do at the park or in the area without a long drive. Even WalMart is far away. We are Xscapers and were very ready to move on after a week here - just nothing to do - but some people could see this as a good thing. The air quality was also noticeably bad from the oil refinery up the highway in Artesia. Again not a fault of the park but beware. We camped at The Ranch - Escapees Park (members only) in a Motorhome.

Willcox / Cochise, AZ KOA, Willcox, Arizona

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This one was hard for me to rate, because they are trying. I'll give them that. The WiFi was really good and we appreciate that. The dryers did not dry - I spent $35 to do 4 loads of laundry and it took me over 4 hours. Maybe put a sign on the dryers if they don't work so people don't waste their time? The management was apologetic and did try to make it right. Also one night, one of the staff members turned our water off and pulled too hard and caused the water to spray out of the hookup and flood under our RV. And we didn't have water hookup for about 12 hours. This resulted in people working 1 foot away from our RV for hours, not exactly peaceful. Like I said this place does try but during our stay the mark was missed for $90 for 2 nights. Road noise is very loud but easy in/out on the highway...pros and cons. We camped at Willcox / Cochise, AZ KOA in a Motorhome.

Fairview Riverside State Park, Madisonville, Louisiana

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

It rained a lot while we were here, not the fault of the park obviously, but the park has very poor drainage and it was impossible to make it from the car to the motorhome without stepping in puddles. The park is well-kept and beautiful, but seemed understaffed. No one to check us in despite it being office hours (office was locked) and I noticed the entry gate was never down even when I came in late. The walkway along the river was pretty. I think it's worth it to pay more to stay in the "premiere" section as the sites are bigger. Washer/dryer is free, but dryer was broken our entire stay (6 days). Nice playground for kids. Good proximity to stores/restaurants/etc. We camped at Fairview Riverside State Park in a Motorhome.

McKinney Falls State Park, Austin, Texas

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

This is a great place to stay when visiting Austin because the location is so good. We were never more than 15-20 minutes from all of the cool stuff to do in Austin. The park itself is very wooded, which is really nice. We loved our spot, #33. We were originally assigned another site but there was no way our 38 foot motorhome would have been able to be level. That would be my main complaint about this park - the sites are very unlevel. I saw a lot of people way up on blocks or with their tires off the ground. The branches are also not trimmed well enough, we had a close call with our motorhome roof and a branch. We stayed for 12 days, so buying the TX state parks pass was worth it for us, but I agree with others that the daily use fee on top of camping fees is annoying. I went for some walks at night and saw more wildlife than I wanted to, including some crazy coyote pack howling. Breaker at our site was on the fritz so we called and it was fixed within a half hour. We camped at McKinney Falls State Park in a Motorhome.

Stuart Recreation Area - Monongahela National Forest, Elkins, West Virginia

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Beautiful, wooded campground. We had some trouble finding it once we got up the mountain so be sure to scout using Google satellite view. We found the turns a bit tight in our 38 foot motorhome and the first site we got was so unlevel that we had to move. After that, no issues. We camped at Stuart Recreation Area - Monongahela National Forest in a Motorhome.

Ocala North RV Resort, Reddick, Florida

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Awful value for price paid. Super narrow site next to a dilapidated perm site (window AC's, flat tires, sagging roof). Cracked concrete pad that was never blown off or cleaned, so tons of pine straw. Very, very loud highway noise from 70. Cable did not work and when we brought it up all we got was that someone hit the pole and it had been like that forever. We got put in the pull through section (which was not maintained enough on the other side to ACTUALLY pull through so we had to back out) right at the front. Avoid this area if possible, too many dumpy perms. We camped at Ocala North RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Fort De Soto Campground, Tierra Verde, Florida

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

We liked this park a lot. Great water views, great biking, nice beaches - what more can you ask for? Price was high for not having sewer. If you can swing it, a water view is worth it. And their reservation website is extremely frustrating. We camped at Fort De Soto Campground in a Motorhome.

Hilton Head Island Motorcoach Resort, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $70.00
Overall Rating:

This place is a class act. Beautiful. Loved the fitness center and the pool. Beach is about 10-15 min bike ride away. You have to cross a couple busy intersections but there are sidewalks. We loved our stay here and felt it was worth the (expensive) price tag. We camped at Hilton Head Island Motorcoach Resort in a Motorhome.

This state park is the gold standard. Beautiful large sites, well maintained, clean bath houses. Laundry was good and inexpensive. A lot to do, bike or car ride over to the springs and see the monkeys and take a glass bottom boat ride! We camped at Silver Springs State Park (formerly Silver River State Park) in a Motorhome.
