Peaks-Kenny State Park, Dover-Foxcroft, Maine

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

Nice camping area with fabulous beach and hiking trails. Sites have enough buffer between them to ensure privacy. Long drive in, but worth the trip. Most sites are level, restrooms are clean. Easy trails to walk to beach. There are a handful of sites with water/electric, but most are primitive. Great scenery, and very peaceful. We plan to come back for a longer stay. We camped at Peaks-Kenny State Park in a Motorhome.

Arndt's Aroostook River Lodge & Campground, Presque Isle, Maine

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

We LOVED it here! The staff is friendly and helpful, the sites are large and well maintained, the restrooms are spotless, the grounds are well-kept and the views are magnificent. Sites on the hillside are terraced, most of the campground is mowed grass. There is a nice network of hiking trails behind the campground. Easy access to Presque Isle, Fort Fairfield, Caribou and points beyond. We will definitely be back. We camped at Arndt's Aroostook River Lodge & Campground in a Motorhome.

West Thompson Lake COE, North Grosvenordale, Connecticut

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

Small hidden gem of a campground, quiet and peaceful. Most campers were in motorhomes, including several full-timers. This is one of the few Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds in New England, and full-timers know what a great value the Army Corps campgrounds are. We set up our screen room on the site and parked our towed vehicle in the nearby parking lot. Hosts were very friendly and helpful. Our site (2) was easy to back into, and hookups worked well. Dual water connections. Very nice hiking paths all around. Easy access from route 395. We will likely stay here again. We camped at West Thompson Lake COE in a Motorhome.

Assateague Island National Seashore Campground, Berlin, Maryland

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

We love the natural beauty here, this is our second stay. We prefer the Bayside loop B, where generators are not allowed. Lots of sun for our solar panels. Great biking all around, interpretive trails, and abundant wildlife. The wild horses are fun, though they hardly seem wild! There is a friendly, out-going vibe here, including the on-site hosts. The Bayside loops are roomy and we had no problems with bugs in mid-May. We camped at Assateague Island National Seashore Campground in a Motorhome.

Bolding Mill COE, Gainesville, Georgia

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

One of the nicest Army Corps campgrounds we've stayed in, and we've stayed in a lot of of them. Every site was well-engineered, well-maintained, and simply beautiful. It was like camping at the botanical gardens. Most sites are either on the water, or have a great view. Staff came to clean up sites almost immediately after they were vacated. A lot of boaters used the campground and keep their boats near their sites. Even in the busy areas though, it didn't seem crowded. Very large site. We camped at Bolding Mill COE in a Motorhome.

Oconee Point COE, Seneca, South Carolina

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

Great Army Corps campground on Hartwell Lake. The site we had reserved ahead of time turned out to be very hot, with no shade. The staff could not have been more helpful, and changed us to a nice shady spot right by the water. Big, level sites, easy to find, easy to park. 4 dump station lanes. We camped at Oconee Point COE in a Motorhome.

Great COE campground. We stayed in the first loop on the left, which was quieter than the other two loops. Easy to navigate, great staff, site was huge. We liked it so much we extended our stay from 3 nights to 6. We camped at Piney Grove COE in a Motorhome.

Monte Sano State Park, Huntsville, Alabama

Great State Park - exceeded expectations. Our site was large, level and private. Easy to back in. Lots of shade, lots of nice hiking trails on the grounds, lots to do and see without leaving the park, and lots to do in Huntsville as well. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Smuggler's Den Campground, Southwest Harbor, Maine

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

This campground was the last of our 3-month trip. We stayed at 56 different campgrounds, and this was one of the best. Very clean and well-managed, helpful staff and friendly vibe. They have a large tenting area, and that was full, even in late October. The RV area, where we stayed was also nearly full. That said, the campground didn't feel overrun or crowded. Our site was level and easy to back into with our Class C motor home. The sites on our side of the road were open and sunny. It was shadier on the other side of the road. We were able to access on foot several of the hiking trails of Acadia National Park, handy because we were traveling without a towed vehicle. The owners have invested in solid infrastructure, including a recently updated WiFi system. Easily the best WiFi of our trip. Kudos to Smuggler's Den - I wish more campgrounds took WiFi as seriously. We will definitely be back! We camped at Smuggler's Den Campground in a Motorhome.

Townsite Campground (Parks Canada), Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

The campground is well-maintained. It could have been cleaner, but given that they were at full capacity, the staff was doing as good a job as possible. Sites are close together, but we lucked out with site A25 at the end of a row, giving us more lawn room. Beauty abounds, with views of the lakes and mountains on all sides. We enjoyed the interpretive programs, especially from the Blackfoot people. Our site had full hookups, which is beyond what we expected in a National Park. Smoke from the nearby wildfires was a factor, but not a deal breaker. We camped at Townsite Campground (Parks Canada) in a Travel Trailer.

Glacier Mist RV Park, Cut Bank, Montana

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We were a little wary when we drove in, because parts of the campground seem run down and there are several shabby mobile homes on the premises. However, appearances are deceiving and we wound up with a nice level site that was easy to back into, full hookups, clean showers and convenient laundry facility. The staff here were very friendly and helpful. We met several other campers and found them friendly as well. The vibe here is laid back and friendly. There are a fair number of people living here that work in the area. We camped at Glacier Mist RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Laura Lake Nicolet National Forest Campground, Armstrong Creek, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $8.00
Overall Rating:

This is a scenic and quiet campground with lovely, well-situated sites. A 5-mile access road led us to believe we might be getting a little further off the beaten path than we wanted, but our fears were put to rest when we arrived. We found a picturesque setting with large, level sites, and an friendly and helpful camp host. Warning: there is no dump station, and the fresh water spigot is not threaded, preventing the attachment of a hose to fill your fresh water tank. We happen to carry a rubber adaptor for just this kind of situation and so were able to fill our tank, though we got a little wet in the process! A wide, mossy footpath lies between all the lakeside sites and the lake, allowing a very pleasant promenade along the water and the opportunity to greet your fellow campers. A lovely campground, and we're sorry we can only stay one night. We camped at Laura Lake Nicolet National Forest Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Au Train Lake Campground, Au Train, Michigan

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed for two nights with another couple, who had the adjacent site. Our site was HUGE, level and easy to get into. The roads leading to and into the campground were easy to navigate. Our site was away from the water, and we were happy to be were we were. The sites on the water were much busier and noisier. It's a very popular campground and were happy to have the "quiet corner." The campground hosts greeted us and chatted with us for a good half hour - very pleasant and helpful. We swam in the lake. The water was clean, though very shallow at the beach so you have to walk out a way to get to deep water. There is no dump station. The hosts told us we could dump at the Bay Furnace campground, 10 miles away, which we did. This was in the opposite direction from our next destination so a bit of a nuisance. We camped at Au Train Lake Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Morning Mist Resort, Stonecliffe, Ontario

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

The camp operators have done an outstanding job with this campground. one of them met us at the gate and immediately got us settled into our campground with excellent back-in instructions. The sites are level and spacious. There are trees and shrubs between sites for privacy. The comfort station has individual bathrooms, each with its own shower. Laundry facilities are in the same building. We loved the layout of the campground with a very large common area that leads down to and includes the beach on the Ottawa River. Other operators would have packed in as many campsites as possible close to the water, but the camp operators chose to keep it more park-like and maximized the common area. The end result is a lovely resort. We thought that if we ever become seasonal rentals, this place would top the list. There are motor boats available to rent, and were allowed to use the canoes and kayaks for no charge. We had planned to stay just one night, but extended our stay because we found it so lovely here and hope to return. We camped at Morning Mist Resort in a Travel Trailer.
