Sylvan Park COE, Sylvan Grove, Kansas

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

Small COE park behind the dam at Wilson Lake. Sites are level, trees for shade. Breezy/windy most of the time. Quiet during the week; full on weekends. Boating and fishing are the draws here. Wilson Lake campgrounds were flooded during our stay with only a few sites open in some areas. We stayed at the Sylvan Park COE area. Limited OTA stations but excellent Verizon signal. We camped at Sylvan Park COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Fishing and boating are the attractions here. Small towns of Wilson (home of the largest Czech egg) and Lucas (interesting public restroom, Brandt's Meat Market-delicious smoked sausages) are interesting but nothing much to see. Small grocery store in Wilson. Major shopping in either Salina or Hays about 60 miles away.

Riverside COE, Marquette, Kansas

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

Lovely, small park behind the dam on Kanopolis Lake. We spent 11 days here in June and enjoyed the peace and quiet. Not many campers during the week, park filled up on weekends. Fishing is the big draw. Most campgrounds around the lake were closed due to the flooding from all the recent rains. Slightly annoyed by the ever-present black flies. Beautiful birds, especially the hummingbirds and Orioles. Decent OTA TV and good Verizon signal. We camped at Riverside COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The nearest town is Marquette; not much there though it has a small grocery store. Mushroom Rock State Park is a few miles away and interesting. Kanopolis Lake is lovely and would provide water sports fun had it been accessible. We didn't get to Ellsworth or Kanopolis but saw a Kansas PBS program which showed some interesting things to see there.

Covered Wagon Campground, Abilene, Kansas

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

This place is a small, private 'park' as opposed to a campground. Owner is a very nice, helpful young man. The area was expected to be flooded from all the storms coming through and the bathhouse/laundry was sandbagged so we didn't get inside. The sites are plenty long enough but narrow with a bit of grassy area for a picnic table. However, your neighbor's sewer connection is right outside your door. Moving the table is an option but the connection is still outside your door. No storm shelter on site; nearest is at the courthouse 2 miles into town. The transient camper area is clean and on the high side of the campground; no trees. Most other sites are occupied by long term residents. A safe, clean place to stop for a day or two to visit historic Abilene. Cable TV on some sites; decent Verizon signal. We camped at Covered Wagon Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Abilene is a historic town with a few shops and restaurants. The biggest draw is the Eisenhower Library & Museum which is very interesting. Be sure to visit the Greyhound Museum where two retired Greyhound racers greet visitors. One small grocery store in town. Salina, about 30 minutes away, has all the usual big stores. Old Town Abilene is interesting but no activities when we were there due to the weather and time of year.

Small, privately owned RV park with FHU on level, gravel sites. On-site laundry with large machines and clean room ($1.50w/$2.00d). Wifi and OTA TV. Good Verizon signal. Meeting room with full kitchen available for groups. Lovely, pleasant, helpful hosts/owners who do not live on site but are in and out and available by phone. Wildwood Acre RV Park, Stillwater, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

Small, privately owned park outside of Stillwater OK. Park could use a little TLC and the owner indicated he was working on upgrading the sites. Good laundry room ($1 w/d). Level gravel sites, no shade, no amenities such as picnic table or fire ring. Able to use Verizon data package for streaming. This is just a safe, comfortable stopover place. Some permanent residents, college students. Owner on site and pays attention to who comes and goes. He was helpful, available if you needed something, and we enjoyed talking with him. I would stay here again. We camped at Wildwood Acre RV Park in a Motorhome.

Chickasaw NRA (The Point Campground), Sulphur, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $11.00
Overall Rating:

Beautiful park on Lake Arbuckle. The reservable sites are on a loop in the woods. No place to 'check-in' if you have online reservations. Ranger will come by now and again and they have a list of who reserved. Walk-in have pay at the kiosk, credit card only. Quiet, dark, camping in the woods - lovely. Sites may not be level front to back depending on the length of the rig. OTA TV had major channels. Decent Verizon wifi/cell signals. Sites are spacious and have room for the additional vehicle. Lake Arrowhead State Park, Wichita Falls, Texas

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

Lovely park with W/E sites with dump station. About 6 sites in each loop, well spaced. The bathhouse is old but clean and is also the storm shelter. Dark at night so awesome stargazing. Flat, paved roadways good for biking. Lots of folks fishing off the docks and boats. Prairie Dogs delightful to watch; lots of birds. Heard what we think were coyotes howling in the evening. Site 36 is nice as you open to the trees, no one on that side. Very strong Verizon service, streaming worked. We camped at Lake Arrowhead State Park in a Motorhome.

Lake Brownwood State Park, Brownwood, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

We camped in the Council Bluffs loop which had full hookups on all sites. Most sites are not level to some degree; ours required five inches of wood under the front tires and front jack. No laundry facility. A few OTA TV channels. The trails and some features need a little TLC. The grass was not mowed in the 2 weeks we were here; tall in some places. Park has wifi which we didn't use and other campers indicated was very weak. Weak Verizon cell signal. Our Verizon wifi varied from 3MG to 0. Dump station also available near the bathhouse. Summit Vacation Resort, New Braunfels, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Level, graveled sites. Most sites are very close. Beautiful grounds behind our site. Clean laundry area, $1.50 per load. Beautiful pool area with gym and hot tub on the RV side, though small which may make it crowded during high peak use. Guests also may use amenities at the Resort across the road. Close to Guadalupe River. Staff friendly and helpful. Very weak Verizon signal; slow wifi and dropped phone calls. This park is in the Texas hill country which is a beautiful area. Note: you check in at the Resort office which necessitates a U-turn to get across the road to the campground. Large area in which to turn around. We camped at Summit Vacation Resort in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Sites are lovely, level. We camped in the pull through area and sites are long blacktop pad but they are narrow. Lovely view of the lake. Would be very hot on the sunnier days. The loops have trees offering shade and lovely views of the water as well. Staff in the office very friendly and helpful. This is a recreation are so has ball fields and a rodeo arena on site. Sister park, Texana park, is very nice but older and needs a little TLC. Very nice park ranger in the Nature Center. Gated park, campers are given gate code. Overall Rating:

Sites are level back-ins. Roads need some attention and overall park needs some TLC. Nature Center closed until March; ranger-led walks listed on the website but not taking place. Overall, a lovely small park overlooking the bay. Staff at registration helpful and pleasant. Fishing, kayaking, boating, hiking trails available. We camped on the bayside which has communal picnic pavilion and firepits in the center of the loop. Dump station nearby as well as on the beachside. Beachside sites are narrow but have a permanent structure over a picnic table at each site and individual fire rings. Galveston is 12 miles away. Krogers and Walmart (small lots not suitable for RVs to move easily). Laundry in nearby Jamaica Beach. We were here during the first Mardi Gras weekend, enjoyed the free parade on Seawall Blvd. Festivities in The Strand required tickets. Many RVs boondock Thurs-Sun along the seawall (inexpensive). The historic district, The Strand and Oil Rig Museum interesting; parking fees. Beaches are lovely and 'beach access' means drive your car out there; RVs on the beach.

Overall Rating:

Level sites with water and electric. Dump station is off site but close by and easy in/out. Can drive and/or camp on the beach, the sand is hard packed and will hold big rigs. It was chilly and windy most days that we camped here for a week in early February 2019, but that kept the mosquitoes away for the most part. Site 15 allows great views of the Gulf from the front windows of the motorhome. Enjoy the beach, bring bug spray. Overall Rating:

Small park across the street from Ameristar Casino. FHU, mostly level pull throughs, wifi, cable. Mostly a 'stop-over' park with folks staying one night; some campers staying a couple of days to explore the area and visit casinos. Appear to be several long-term residents but the park is clean and well kept. Free 24 hour shuttle to casino. No gate but roving security 24 hrs. Laundry available ($1.50/$1.00) although both washers were out of order during our stay. Walmart, grocery store, restaurants and such nearby. We camped here for a week. Easy access to historic Vicksburg and Nat'l Military Park. Despite the gov't shutdown, park ($15 car) was open although there were no ranger-led discussions or tours (no fees collected).
