Summit Vacation Resort, New Braunfels, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Level, graveled sites. Most sites are very close. Beautiful grounds behind our site. Clean laundry area, $1.50 per load. Beautiful pool area with gym and hot tub on the RV side, though small which may make it crowded during high peak use. Guests also may use amenities at the Resort across the road. Close to Guadalupe River. Staff friendly and helpful. Very weak Verizon signal; slow wifi and dropped phone calls. This park is in the Texas hill country which is a beautiful area. Note: you check in at the Resort office which necessitates a U-turn to get across the road to the campground. Large area in which to turn around. We camped at Summit Vacation Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

All the major stores are available in New Braunfels about 15 miles away. The historic town of Gruene is a lovely place to wander through shops, listen to music and enjoy a drink or meal. The River Road scenic drive along the Guadalupe River is highly suggested. San Antonio and all the attractions are about 50 miles away.

Brackenridge Park & Campground, Edna, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Sites are lovely, level. We camped in the pull through area and sites are long blacktop pad but they are narrow. Lovely view of the lake. Would be very hot on the sunnier days. The loops have trees offering shade and lovely views of the water as well. Staff in the office very friendly and helpful. This is a recreation are so has ball fields and a rodeo arena on site. Sister park, Texana park, is very nice but older and needs a little TLC. Very nice park ranger in the Nature Center. Gated park, campers are given gate code. Weak Verizon signal making for slow over air wifi and dropped phone calls. We camped at Brackenridge Park & Campground in a Motorhome.

Galveston Island State Park, Galveston, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Sites are level back-ins. Roads need some attention and overall park needs some TLC. Nature Center closed until March; ranger-led walks listed on the website but not taking place. Overall, a lovely small park overlooking the bay. Staff at registration helpful and pleasant. Fishing, kayaking, boating, hiking trails available. We camped on the bayside which has communal picnic pavilion and firepits in the center of the loop. Dump station nearby as well as on the beachside. Beachside sites are narrow but have a permanent structure over a picnic table at each site and individual fire rings. Texas State Park Pass useful otherwise you are charged pp/per day in addition to the camping fees. We camped at Galveston Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Galveston is 12 miles away. Krogers and Walmart (small lots not suitable for RVs to move easily). Laundry in nearby Jamaica Beach. We were here during the first Mardi Gras weekend, enjoyed the free parade on Seawall Blvd. Festivities in The Strand required tickets. Many RVs boondock Thurs-Sun along the seawall (inexpensive). The historic district, The Strand and Oil Rig Museum interesting; parking fees. Beaches are lovely and 'beach access' means drive your car out there; RVs on the beach.

Sea Rim State Park, Sabine Pass, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Level sites with water and electric. Dump station is off site but close by and easy in/out. Can drive and/or camp on the beach, the sand is hard packed and will hold big rigs. It was chilly and windy most days that we camped here for a week in early February 2019, but that kept the mosquitoes away for the most part. Site 15 allows great views of the Gulf from the front windows of the motorhome. Enjoy the beach, bring bug spray. Nearest town for stores, etc., is Port Arthur a good 45 minutes to an hour drive away. We camped at Sea Rim State Park in a Motorhome.

Frenchman's Wilderness Campground, Breaux Bridge, Louisiana

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Very nice campground right off X121 on Interstate 10 in Louisiana. FHU, OTA TV was decent; no wifi. Clean, nicely spaced sites. Escorted to site by staff. Laundry available but didn't use it. Keypad bathhouse and laundry. Nice pool, on the small side. Awesome sounds from the bayou at night. We camped at Frenchman's Wilderness Campground in a Motorhome.

Ameristar Vicksburg RV Park, Vicksburg, Mississippi

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Small park across the street from Ameristar Casino. FHU, mostly level pull throughs, wifi, cable. Mostly a 'stop-over' park with folks staying one night; some campers staying a couple of days to explore the area and visit casinos. Appear to be several long-term residents but the park is clean and well kept. Free 24 hour shuttle to casino. No gate but roving security 24 hrs. Laundry available ($1.50/$1.00) although both washers were out of order during our stay. Walmart, grocery store, restaurants and such nearby. We camped here for a week. Easy access to historic Vicksburg and Nat'l Military Park. Despite the gov't shutdown, park ($15 car) was open although there were no ranger-led discussions or tours (no fees collected). Lower MS River (donation) and Coca-Cola ($3.50pp) We camped at Ameristar Vicksburg RV Park in a Motorhome.

Benchmark RV Park, Meridian, Mississippi

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Clean, easily accessible for big rigs. Level paved pull-through sites, FHU, wifi, cable. Very nice laundry ($1.50/$1.00). Nothing much here, mostly just a stopover from Interstate 20. The owner is very nice, helpful. Easy access to Meridian though nothing much there that can't be seen in a day or so. Not a 'campground' more of a stopover on the journey. There are several 'permanent campers' residing here but the park is very well kept. We camped at Benchmark RV Park in a Motorhome.

Lovely small park about 10 miles outside of Huntsville AL. We stayed here for two months (Nov 2018 thru early January 2019). Level sites, FHU, no wifi or cable; OTA channels were fine. Note: water pressure extremely high; regulator required. Biking/hiking trails, lake. Holiday tree trail (free) and village ($5pp) in December. Gated park; key provided with deposit that is returned when key is returned. We camped at Sharon Johnston Park in a Motorhome.

Huntsville has restaurants and shops downtown. We camped during the Christmas holiday season. Holiday tinsel trail around the Big Spring Lake, skating in the park, tree lighting at the mall outside the city. Toured US Space and Rocket Center, Marshall Flight Center and enjoyed both. Visited Monte Sano Mountain, hiking trails; nice campground. Very nice, helpful clerks at the Visitors Center in Huntsville.

Kendall COE, Jamestown, Kentucky

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

We experienced difficulty with the reservations system which had recently been upgraded. The camp host could not 'see' our reservations; fortunately, he called and they were able to confirm so we did not have to move sites. Some sites are not level. Well kept park where sites are being added. Some sites need a little TLC. Host rode through several times a day but saw no other security. No information on where to go for registration upon arrival (hut is at the Kendall CG, nothing at the annex). No OTA TV signal. Dump station at Kendall Annex was under water and at max capacity after a heavy rain. We dumped at the other campground before we left. We camped at Kendall COE in a Motorhome.

76 Falls is a nice place to hike. Creelsboro Rockhouse very interesting though tricky to find as no signs at the entrance. Jamestown and Russell Springs are nearby small towns with a few eateries. Linda's Diner has good food, reasonable prices. Visitors Center has info and helpful staff. Wolf Creek Fish Hatchery interesting to visit, on grounds of the campground. Trout fishing is the main event at the dam.

Overall Rating:

Small RV park across the street from the casino. Shuttle to the casino. Bathhouse with individual bathrooms with showers. Laundry (w/d $1.50). Full hookups, level. Spotty cable and weak wifi. No fire unless you bring a covered stand. Parking for a towed vehicle on the site. We spent 5 days here and enjoyed exploring the town and the casino. Clean, well kept newer campground. Very reasonable rates due to October special and Rewards card. We camped at RV Park at Rising Star Casino in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Rising Sun is a small, historic town on the Ohio River. A few shops and restaurants along main street. Pretty park along the river. Biggest draw is the Rising Star Casino. Seniors (50+) get half price at the buffets on Monday/Tuesday. Decent food for the price; friendly, helpful wait staff. The casino is an old riverboat. Pretty lobby, was being decorated for the Christmas season when we were there.

Ceraland Campground, Columbus, Indiana

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

Beautiful county campground. We camped here in the fall (lots of hickory nuts and acorns falling on the RV). Busy on weekends at this time of year. Lots to do in campground/park; Halloween Haunted Trail on weekends. They do charge $2pp at the entry gate; at check-in, you get a hang-tag for the car so you don't have to pay each time you enter the park. Staff friendly and helpful. Lakeside sites are lovely but no sewer. We camped at Ceraland Campground in a Motorhome.

Columbus IN is close by and downtown is very interesting. Mill Race Park is lovely for hiking or picnicking. City is known for architecture and tours are available through the visitor's center. We enjoyed the Ethnic Expo, lots of 'international' food choices. Grocery and usual stores, chain restaurants are in Columbus. It was quiet and peaceful while we were here. Enjoyed campfires (wood $6 a bundle in camp office).

Warrensburg Travel Park, Warrensburg, New York

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Interesting little park about 5 miles outside of Lake George. Very nice owner and staff. We were there off season and they were getting ready to close the park on 10/8 so no activities. Mostly seasonals; we just lucked out with a very large, FHU, shaded site near the entrance for our 2-week stay. As this site is near the playground and pool and it was out of season, very quiet. In season it would be very busy/noisy. No charge for visitors or pets. Has a nice pool which is being refurbished and access to the river for swimming, fishing, boating. Some sites were available in the seasonals area but the roads are narrow as are the sites and they are not level. Our 40' motorhome would not have been a comfortable fit for a short stay in those areas. Good cable and wifi connections. We camped at Warrensburg Travel Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Nice park, clean, safe. We stayed five weeks and got a very decent rate for the long stay. Owner is a very nice gentleman and helpful. Park filled up on weekends. No pool. Clean clubhouse with pool table, ping pong; can be used for group meals. Full Hookups with wifi and cable. Two each of showers and restrooms, clean (didn't use). Very reasonable laundry on site. Rates a 7 because there is nothing to do in the park, especially for kids. Mostly adults coming and going while enjoying the surrounding areas. Our site was fine although it had very little shade. George's Seafood and Harts Turkey Farm Restaurant provided excellent food at reasonable pricing.
