Lake Thunderbird State Park, Norman, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Passing through, we only needed a one night stay. Decided to get away fro I-40. Lakeside sounded good. It was Tuesday and the park had emptied out after a busy weekend. We found a shady spot with a lake view. Then, the bad stuff after we backed in. Trash was everywhere. Dog crap was literally at our doorstep--many other spots around our sight as well. Cigarette butts were everywhere. The fire can was full of litter. Despite being two days removed from a busy weekend, the trash bins were spilling onto the ground. The lake was muddy enough to plow. We found out later the locals call it Lake Dirtybird. Should have stayed on I-40 and found something else. We camped at Lake Thunderbird State Park in a Travel Trailer.

St. George / Hurricane KOA, Hurricane, Utah

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $46.00
Overall Rating:

I read all the reviews about the poor wi-fi, but I couldn't find anything open closer to Zion. Upon check-in the receptionist said, "The wi-fi is not giod. You will have to keep trying to connect." We parked set up on site that took 4 inches to level. I did not like the sharing of utilities with the neighbor, which put my front door 20 feet from the other neighbor's front door. The wi-fi, though a strong signal, did not connect. My verizon was too weak to use. We took a drive and found a new park down the road a bit. It had large level spaces and a great internet. We moved there. The KOA people refunded us without complaint. That was good of them. But I heard one of them say, "We can't do anything about the internet." Yet they can. They can call the provider and get it fixed. We camped at St. George / Hurricane KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Santa Fe Skies RV Park, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

Good views from my site. The park is on a hillside but is nicely terraced si that every site has some view. Mine was at the bottom so I had a full range view from my beautiful patio. We spent three nights here. Would come again. We camped at Santa Fe Skies RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Ancient Cedars Mesa Verde RV Park, Mancos, Colorado

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed two nights so that we would have a full day to explore Mesa Verde NP, the entrance to which is just across the highway from the park. The facilities are very good. It has a good, modern, clean pool and hot tub, both with a fantastic view of the nearby mountains. The mini golf course looked interesting. The fenced dog run was good also. I would cone here again. We camped at Ancient Cedars Mesa Verde RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

ACT Campground & Environmental Learning Center, Moab, Utah

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

The park is small, packed and difficult to maneuver in. No shade. Extremely noisy from highways. There is no where to walk your dog except for a trashy area used by OHVs across the road. That said, it is s modern facility with a friendly, cooperative staff. The views from the campground are fabulous. If you don't plan on staying at the campsite during the day, this is a good spot to roost. We camped at ACT Campground & Environmental Learning Center in a Travel Trailer.

Duke's Slickrock Grill, Campground and RV Park, Hanksville, Utah

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This park appears to be new. It is basically a big flat piece of dirt, as are most in Utah, but they have made a admirable attempt to landscape it. There are three large grassy areas for tents and walking dogs but no off-leash dog area. The utilities are modern and well laid out. The spots are easy to maneuver in and out of, but if you want to stay hitched you will be limited to the back (north) side. The facility is fenced with good views to east and north. The view to north though is marred by a junk trailer sitting outside the fence. View to west is literally a junk yard. The staff is friendly. The laundry was clean. The on site restaurant is decent. We highly recommend it for an overnight stay. Not much of a draw though for multiple days. We camped at Duke's Slickrock Grill, Campground and RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson State Historic Site, Wetumpka, Alabama

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed one night while passing through area. Called ahead. No reservations but they say they are never more than 3/4 full. Check in was easy. Friendly office staff. The campground is a gigantic circular road with the bath house and a huge grassy lawn in the middle. You just drive through a pick one. Some not long enough for big rigs but we saw many big rigs. Ours was tight between trees but manageable. Lots of shade. Some sites with no fire ring. Waterfronts have views but too steep to get to river. Very quiet except for occasional F-16s from the ANG. Feels like you are very remote but the drive to US 231 and shopping is less than 10 min. We camped at Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson State Historic Site in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

If you want a fire be careful to choose a site that has a fire ring. Build in some time to tour Forts Toulouse and Jackson, both an easy walk from the campground. Beyond Fort Jackson beautiful trails lead down to the confluence of the Coosa and Talapoosa Rivers to form the Alabama River. Great hike.

Meaher State Park, Spanish Fort, Alabama

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

Would have given it a 10 if not for highway noise. Loved the spacious grass between sites. It is so spread out that nearly every camp site has a bay view. Nice trees too. The pads are level asphalt. Hookups are modern and well engineered. Might need your sewer hose props. The park staff was friendly. Stunning sunrises and sunsets. Saw no ants. Call before you arrive early. I got lectured. Good fences around park and night security. We camped at Meaher State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

USS Alabama battleship park 10 minutes west. Must see. Five Rivers ecological park across highway with great trails and gift shop. Blakeley historical park 15 minutes-last major battle of the Civil War. Gulf beaches 40 minutes. Three seafood houses within three miles west on US 98. Watch for heavy traffic on US 98 during rush hours.

Maxwell-Gunter AFB FamCamp (Military FamCamp), Maxwell Gunter AFB, Alabama

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

The only reason I did not give it a 10 is the closeness of the sites. I was not comfortable with that. Otherwise this is a wonderful campground. Great pull through pads with level concrete and well planned hookups. An older section has shade. The manager was kind and helpful. The walking path around the lake is peaceful and pretty. The lake looks like a great fishing hole but I didn't wet a hook. There are grassy open areas to let your dog run, but officially must be on lease. The camp is isloated on the west side of the base but the BX and Shopette are minutes away. The camp stays mostly full. There are a lot of TDY and contractors camped here. Reserve early. We camped at Maxwell-Gunter AFB FamCamp (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Four Mile Creek State Park, Youngstown, New York

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here four nights while visiting the local attractions and friends. The park met my expectations marvelously from its website. After weeks of camping in the dark Canadian forrests it was a pleasure to enjoy the openness of Four-Mile Creek. Beautiful grass lawns stretch everywhere with giant shade trees on almost every campsite. Ours had a windbreak of cedars on one side that gave us complete privacy on that side. We had a view of Lake Ontario also. The park is only 15 minutes from Niagara Falls and fine minutes from historic Fort Niagara. We camped at Four Mile Creek State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Lands End Park, Tobermory, Ontario

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

The park has a good office, store and helpful staff. It is close to Tobermory. The sites are spacious, quiet and deeply hidden in the forest. But be cautious about what you read in their brochure. You cannot see stars except for straight up. You will not see sunsets and there are no views. You will not hear loons on the bay. The "beach" front area is about 30 ft wide and is on a small creek. The interior layout is very confusing and the campground map doesn't help much. They have made an effort to put up signs indicating traffic direction but that could be improved on. I met another camper that was so confused he said he searched for his site for an hour. But that was at night. Don't dare come in here for your initial set-up after dark unless you are very familiar. The roads are winding, narrow, pot-holed, muddy and closely lined with trees. I had to be extremely careful and even then could not avoid brushing with tree limbs against my 30' trailer. There are no ponds in the park, as the brochure allows, only some swamps. But it does have a lot of family oriented sites like volleyball and playgrounds. They want $10 a bundle of firewood. You can easily get it for $4-7 outside. Most disappointing was the dump station. It is in back of the park, on a slope and blocks the loop road. There is a small go-around road but if more than one RV is lined up waiting the entire loop is blocked off. I think I would investigate other parks near Tobermory before coming back here. We camped at Lands End Park in a Travel Trailer.

Castle Rock Campark, Saint Ignace, Michigan

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here four nights while visiting the local attractions. We got a site near the beach with an outstanding view across Lake Huron toward Mackinac Island. It was far enough from I-75 to be mostly quiet. But it is a muddy place when it rains, which it did most of our time there. The roads are dirt/mud and the pads are dirt/mud. The park was mostly deserted, as it was late in the season, yet a Class C came in and parked a few feet from our back bumper. Didn't care though as we were gone mostly. I did get in some fine kayacking out in front of the park. We camped at Castle Rock Campark in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed one night while passing through the area. Didn't unhitch. The pads were excellent, level, clean and spacious. There were lots of trees and greenways.
