Crabtree Falls Campground, Tyro, Virginia

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

This is a lovely spot with a friendly staff. Campsites are shaded and our site was very level. However, the campground is overcrowded with sites and most of them are tent sites with only 3 very small RV sites with full hookups. The gravel road through the campground is one way, very narrow, with tight turns and ruts. The RV sites are too small and crowded making it a challenge to park your Travel Trailer and your Tow vehicle. All sites come with fire rings and management maintains a large stockpile of wood for sale which encourages fires. The sites are so small that the fire rings are only 10 to 15 feet away from your neighbor at best. The abundance of tent sites and fire rings makes smoke a problem, impacting the ability to enjoy the local trails and the river. You could not escape the smoke. If you are the least bit smoke smoke sensitive, this is not the place to camp. Best access to campground is from the east (route 29) as the West Access (From US 11 or I-81) has tighter and steeper turns. We camped at Crabtree Falls Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Crabtree Falls is just a half mile up the road and worth the trip. $3 to access the falls. Excellent trail up the mountain with many rest benches and scenic stops for pictures. Some parts are very vertical with steps.
