Magnolia Ridge COE, Woodville, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $8.00
Overall Rating:

Review would have been much better except for restroom problems. There are 2 restroom buildings and 2 shower/restroom buildings. We used 1 restroom and both showers. The contractor who cleans the restrooms gives them a quick mopping, and goes on. Toilets had mold in them and were not cleaned in the 5 days we were there. Trash was not emptied and was left of the restroom floors. The toilets in the shower houses were stainless steel with no seats and looked as though they came from a prison. Stalls (men's and women's in the shower in the center of the CG had no latches (and no door, in one shower). The North shower was in better shape, but still dirty. Aside from the restroom problems, this is a wonderful place. The sites are spread out along the lake for a mile or so. Most are 30 amp but some near the boat ramp are 50. A few, like site 8, are several hundred feet from their neighbor. In early February, most are vacant. Most back to the water or the cypress swamp that borders the lake. There are well marked trails in the interior of the CG loop plus fire roads to walk. The nearby state park has additional trails and canoe rentals. There is a kids' fishing pond stocked with rainbow trout. On Thursday - Sunday, there was a truck selling some of the best shrimp I have ever had at the US190/TX92 intersection a few miles from the CG. We camped at Magnolia Ridge COE in a Motorhome.

Get shrimp from the truck at US190/TX92 if he is there. Shopping is about 15 mi in either direction (Woodville, Jasper). Laundromat in Jasper. The nearby Texas State Park has additional trails launching ramps and canoe rental.

Yegua Creek COE, Somerville, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $13.00
Overall Rating:

Passing through and stayed 2 nights in chilly weather. Sites in our loop are very close together, but mostly empty so it did not matter. Nice views over the lake which was quite high so docks were underwater. Restrooms were almost too cold to use at all. They have expanded metal mesh at the ends. At one time, these had been covered with plastic sheeting, but it was mostly torn away. There is a nice nature trail, but 2 of it's 3 bridges were under water. We camped at Yegua Creek COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

We went down to Brenham for groceries, etc. A visit to the Blue Bell Ice Cream factory is definitely in order, even in winter. A large scoop in a cup for only $1.

Guadalupe River State Park, Spring Branch, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful place. There are lots of trails to walk through wonderful woods and prairie. When we arrived, the park was nearly empty. It filed up Friday and Saturday, emptied again on Sunday. The river is clear except just after a rain. The park staff were friendly and helpful. Two highlights of the visit were a visit to the Bauer unit on the North side of the river and a guided hike through the adjoining Honey Creek State Natural Area. This area is closed except for the Saturday morning hikes. We camped at Guadalupe River State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

HEB (major grocery store) about 5 miles East. Also Wal Mart, etc in same area. Laundromat in Boerne, 15 miles or so West. Most trails in the park are closed when muddy, so try for dry weather. The guided walk into the Honey Creek SNA, only available on Saturday mornings, is definitely worthwhile. We did a day trip to The Government Canyon State Natural Area (SNA) and had a very nice brunch at the Back Yard Bistro on TX 16 in Pipe Creek more or less on the way.

Cranes Mill Park COE, Canyon Lake, Texas

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $13.00
Overall Rating:

Nice smaller CG on Canyon Lake. Our site was at the end of the loop with a large live oak providing late day shade. Like many COE facilities, this one focuses on water activities with a fishing dock and launching ramp. There is also a tent only loop that was closed for the season and which provided a good walk for the dog and me. We used this as a base of operations to visit with family in San Antonio and to explore the area. Based on an earlier review, we chose site 14 giving us direct access to the fishing dock and the wooded areas beyond it. The tables have covered shelters over them making it easy to use them for cooking, even in the rain. We camped at Cranes Mill Park COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Blanco State Park is just north of here, Johnson City and LBJ country a bit further. Guadalupe River State Park is just to the West. Some shopping is within a few miles and there is a major shopping center around the intersection of US 281 and TX 46, about 15 miles.

Shiloh RV Park, Richmond, Texas

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed 3 nights having been evacuated from Brazos Bend St. Pk. due to flooding and we are grateful that they found room for us. Like many commercial RV parks in TX and LA, this one seems to have a majority of full time residents. The sites are very close together and many of the units have lots of stuff around them including work vehicles and storage trailers. Many of the units will never move, e.g. the Katrina era FEMA trailer next to us and units with window ACs in slideout sidewalls. That said, the park was OK and convenient for visiting family in Houston, but it is not a place with many amenities of its own and trains pass just across the highway many times per night. We camped at Shiloh RV Park in a Motorhome.

Shopping center with Kroger and Specs Liquor between CG and freeway. Easy access to and from I69/US59 into downtown Houston. As of early 2019, The road West is under reconstruction and you travel mostly on the access roads going West.

Brazos Bend State Park, Needville, Texas

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

What was to be a 4 day stay was cut short after 1 day when the park was evacuated due to flooding on the Brazos. In spite of that, we got in a nice hike and looked over much of the park. We will be back on another trip. We camped at Brazos Bend State Park in a Motorhome.

High Island RV Park, High Island, Texas

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

One night stop on the way to Brazos Bend St. Park, using the Bolivar Ferry to avoid driving in Houston. Nice little park, clean and quiet. Most sites are occupied by long term residents, but several pull throughs are reserved for transients. Even in January, beware of the mosquitos. They appear in huge clouds at dusk and we spent the early part of the evening eliminating the ones that managed to get in when I took the dog out. We camped at High Island RV Park in a Motorhome.

Abbeville RV Park, Abbeville, Louisiana

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

This is a nice, quiet, park on the outskirts of a small town. The lack of restroom and shower facilities is partially mitigated by full hookups, but not when it is pouring rain as you set up and break camp. I'm sure that the trail through the woods around the park is nice, but it is largely under water at the moment. While we were told that the park does not flood, the same cannot be said about the access road. The area is an interesting one, the people we met friendly, and it merits a return visit in better weather. We camped at Abbeville RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Locals that we met at the laundromat on Charity Street noted that there was "nothing to do" at this park and recommended Palmetto Is. State Park. Robie's Food Center on S State St. has an amazing selection, good quality and reasonable prices. They make a variety of sausages.

Shepard State Park, Gautier, Mississippi

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $13.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed for 3 nights over New Years. Sites are gravel, generally well separated and fairly level, but have some roots and rocks in the case of site 22. Restrooms are old, but clean. Park staff helpful but noted that the maintenance budget is not adequate. Had a dead branch fall on my awning but no damage done. The park has an extensive trail system, but rain made some of the trails unusable. The area is typical Gulf coast marsh and forest. Would definitely come back, preferably in drier weather. We camped at Shepard State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Groceries at Jimmy Lees across the street. Got good shrimp at Bozo's in Pascagoula to cook at camp. Went back for lunch at Bozo's Too next door. Food was very good, but took way too long for a simple order. There is a disc golf course and a couple of primitive camp grounds as well.

Lake Tobesofkee Claystone Park, Macon, Georgia

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Spent 2 nights here on our way south. At this time of year, the park is lightly used, mostly by transients like us. We walked the interior roads of the park and had no traffic to contend with. The park facilities (pavilions, restrooms, entrance station, etc.) appear to date from the 1970s when the park was created. They are formed from one or more hexagonal modules with spaces between the poured concrete pillars filled in where exterior walls are needed. The roofs appear to be concrete, as well. It is worth walking through the park to see how this was done. Sites 40 - 45 have level concrete pads and are reserved for RVs with a 7 day limit. Many of the other sites have substantial front to back slopes that make leveling a motor home difficult. While the sites are on the side of the hill so that most have lake views, a unit on 45 blocks the lake view for 44 and a similar blockage occurs in the 40 - 43 group. We camped at Lake Tobesofkee Claystone Park in a Motorhome.

Sherling Lake Park, Greenville, Alabama

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Nice park a mile or so outside Greenville, AL. Spent 2 nights. Heavy rain the day we arrived made lakes too muddy for fishing. Nice walking trail along lakes. Park seems to have a number of full time residents who leave for work between 5AM and 6AM returning after dark. If you are a golfer, the nearby course appears to be a good one. We camped at Sherling Lake Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Super Foods grocery store next to I-65 adds a 10% "service charge" to the posted prices, e.g. 50 cent bananas become 55 cent bananas at checkout. In many cases, the posted prices are not particularly good.

Waitsboro Campground COE, Somerset, Kentucky

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $13.00
Overall Rating:

Finding the campground is complicated by the fact that the address given on RV Trip Wizard, 500 Waitsboro Dr. is wrong. Waitsboro Dr. is a road at the top of the bluff lined with a mix of McMansions and vacant lots. The correct address is Waitsboro Rd. We followed the Google directions provided by RVTW and turned from State Hwy 2301 onto Waitsboro Dr. then turned around and came back out (Fortunately, some of the houses have circular drives). Coming from the S on US-27, there is no sign that indicates that State Hwy. 2301 is Waitsboro Rd. and we spent some time trying to find the campground. Finally spotted a Waitsboro Rd. and COE sign on US-27 as we came from the N and went past the Dr. and down the hill to the campground. We had site 22, up on the hill near the showers. Nice campground, sandwiched in between the bluffs and the lake. Mostly unoccupied in early September. Primarily caters to boaters and fishermen. The shore is rocky and muddy, but the DB National Forest nearby offers lots of hiking opportunities and woods full of chiggers. We camped at Waitsboro Campground COE in a Motorhome.
