St. Louis N.E. / I-270 / Granite City KOA, Granite City, Illinois

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Read a lot of negative reviews about this place. Happy to say I was pleasantly surprised by the campground. We stayed a couple of days while exploring St. Louis. This campground is close to the city (20 minutes) and that is exactly what you are paying for - close access to St. Louis. It is probably the smallest KOA I have ever seen one, but it had a jumping pillow and playground, pool, laundry, and store. Kids enjoyed it just fine. Staff were mostly teenagers but pleasant and polite. This KOA is in an industrial area (hard to find; no signs en route!) but you wouldn’t really know it once you get here. Bathrooms were clean and laundry room was as well. Trees surrounded the property. Temper expectations people...this is a great campground for a quick stay in the St. Louis area - sure beats hotel prices! We camped at St. Louis N.E. / I-270 / Granite City KOA in a Travel Trailer.

East Harbor State Park, Lakeside-Marblehead, Ohio

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

East Harbor is a very large park near Port Clinton and Lake Erie. Most sites are out in the open with little shade. Sites are close together too. Compared to the sites at other Ohio state parks, I was disappointed at East Harbor. Easy to navigate the park though. Showers and restrooms were clean though which appeased the family. Went swimming at the beach and it was ok. Could have used some more picnic tables there. Also, we stayed over a weekend and some people were partying and loud until 1 am. This campground strikes me as more of a party place in general; if you want peace and quiet (and shade), I’d look elsewhere. We camped at East Harbor State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Maumee Bay State Park, Oregon, Ohio

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

Maumee Bay State Park is one of the nicer state parks in Ohio that we've stayed at - and we've camped at roughly a dozen of them. Cannot stress how nice the sites are; easy in/out because of the cul-de-sac format. Grown vegetation/hedgerows provide privacy between all sites. Grass mowed; the grounds are maintained well. Paved pads that are level and plenty long (we have a 26 ft trailer). Paved bicycle trails throughout the park with several ponds; runs parallel to Lake Erie. Nice nature center for the kids with a boardwalk. You can fish in a pond at the nature center; rangers (very helpful) will provide bait and reels if you need them. Very active park hosts that provide ice cream socials and donut breakfasts on weekends. Shower houses/restrooms are clean but not immaculate - good by state park standards. The park is just minutes from a drive-in movie theatre, restaurants, Walmart, etc.; about 25 minutes to the Toledo Zoo and shopping. Give this place a try if you are in the area, you won't be disappointed! We camped at Maumee Bay State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Mohican State Park, Loudonville, Ohio

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

We live an hour from Mohican so we camp there all the time. Kids love it. This is a very kid friendly park. Biking, gem mining, nature center, pool and splash pad, tubing on the river, etc. Staff are all very nice. Showers and restrooms are pretty clean, especially the new one by the pool. Fishing in the Mohican River is decent so long as the river isn’t high and running too fast; we caught bass, carp, and bluegill. Some things to improve on - as noted in other posts, this campground is no fun in the rain. It gets muddy and flooded quick...seriously. Also, compared to other state parks, Mohican lacks activities like Bingo, ice cream socials, movie nights, etc. I think the staff expects people to just lounge by the pool or go hiking - which most do. Lastly, this park is always full. Book early (6 months out) or else you may not get a site. Overall, a nice place for a weekend getaway with the family. We camped at Mohican State Park in a Travel Trailer.
