Mackinaw Mill Creek Camping, Mackinaw City, Michigan

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $86.00
Overall Rating:

We have stayed here a number of years but this trip will most likely be our last. They have changed the way they do their reservations for Holidays (speaking of Labor Day in this case) and they have no respect for long time campers. In years past everyone would wait in line on Sunday before Labor Day and submit your site request form with your 3 top choices. If you wanted a specific site you knew to be there early, have some comradeship with fellow campers and wait for the windows to open for reservations. It was part of the Labor Day experience. You could have some control over what site you had the following year. No longer! Now you must wait until the weekend following Labor Day and do it on the Internet. To make matters worse, if you have a group of 6 (sites) or more you can reserve on Saturday if you are a group of 5 (sites) or less you must wait until Sunday to reserve. Theoretically, all BridgeView sites could be taken by Saturday and someone who has been there for years could be locked out. I brought my concerns to the attention of the management with little response. They don't think that is "likely" to happen. Now you reserve your site by type (BridgeView etc) and it's supposedly pot luck where you wind up. Also the rates this year were $86 a night. 30 Amp service, NO cable TV and OTA tv is sketchy at best. Internet connections are essentially non-existent. We stayed in 610 this year and it was so unlevel it took all the blocking I had to get "close". $86 a night doesn't have to be concrete or asphalt but run a box blade over it and level it occasionally. Again, we've stayed there 4 of the last 6 years and won't be back. Also if you go place close attention to the map and then you'll still get lost. The map they have is very rudimentary. We sat at our campsite and had to help several people figure out where they were supposed to be. They don't help you, they give you a general map. We camped at Mackinaw Mill Creek Camping in a Motorhome.

Weston Lake Recreation Area (Military FamCamp), Fort Jackson Army Post, South Carolina

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

This was our second stay at this FamCamp. Both times were one night stays. This time we stayed in #4, backed up to the treeline. One of the most level cement pads we have ever been on in all of our years camping. Hookups were in excellent shape, although the water tap being next to the ground was inconvenient. Cable hookup in the power pedestal was next to useless. It is DirecTV but all the channels were static and poor quality. Got 31 channels with the Digital OTA antenna. Bath house was clean but no ventilation and hot. You won't linger in there. Each site had a metal picnic table in nearly new condition as well as a pedestal grill and fire ring that also had a cooking grate. The interior road need a lot of work, they are pot hole ravaged. The lake is off limits as the area has found Flesh Eating Bacteria in the water, but they say NOT in their lake but it is still undergoing testing to be sure. Don't count on access from Fort Jackson! The FamCamp is NOT on property. The post gate closest to the camp is sporadically open. We will stay here when in the area again. We camped at Weston Lake Recreation Area (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Natural Springs Resort, New Paris, Ohio

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $56.00
Overall Rating:

We wanted to do one last weekend before our motorhome went in for service and a family member left the country for a military obligation. We booked Natural Springs Resort as we have been there a couple of times prior. We were so disappointed that we won't ever be back. The place is dated and it is obvious they are not putting any money into the common structures of the campground. The bathrooms and shower stalls were always grungy and one without toilet paper. I never saw them being attended to and didn't notice a change all weekend. The hookups are oddly layed out and the spots are tight....really tight. That didn't stop the people directly behind us and a couple of rows back from walking through our campsite, even while we were sitting out under the awning. They were kind enough to try to engage in conversation though. I agree with the last poster, this is a party place with cornhole bags incessantly banging against the boards and kids running amok all hours of the day and night with little to no respect for their fellow campers. I try to not deduct points from a campground based on the behavior of the campers, but there was no effort from any "staff" to make anyone adhere to any rules set forth in the pamphlet. I have never felt scared to leave stuff out in a campground before, but we did at this place. Now if you were a seasonal, those spots are spacious with paved pads and green grass. This place seems to cater to the seasonal camper and the day use fee payers from the community nearby. It could be pretty good if they put forth the money and time to bring it up to snuff. We camped at Natural Springs Resort in a Motorhome.

Anchor Down RV Resort, Dandridge, Tennessee

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

We stay here every Memorial Day with family in a second unit. We love it here and have the next 2 Memorial Days already booked so we can have our buddy sites. They are continually adding to this park. They upgraded the "beach" area this past season and added two awesome water slides. You may want to rent or bring your golf cart as it can be a hike up hill to some places in the park. Always spotless and the staff are always friendly. Excellent dog park and tennis/basketball/pickleball courts. Also a pretty decent pool. We camped at Anchor Down RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Wytheville KOA, Wytheville, Virginia

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $53.00
Overall Rating:

We always stay here on the way to Myrtle Beach each year. Each year it is always the same. The site is plenty long enough that we do not have to disconnect for an overnight stay (we stay in the new area down below the activity center). The only gripe is that the bathrooms are always dirty. We see staff sitting around and dirty bathrooms are unacceptable. This KOA, like others, clean their bathrooms once a day. Cleaning hours are posted on the wall near the door. If someone destroys the stall shortly after that cleaning time, it stays dirty until the next day. Other than the dirty bathrooms (we use the one in our coach) it's a good/decent halfway stop for us. We camped at Wytheville KOA in a Motorhome.

Ocean Lakes Family Campground, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $65.00
Overall Rating:

Bath houses are always immaculate. Staff cleaning them several times daily. No matter what time of the day or night the stalls are always clean. Staff is also paying more attention to the golf carts. We saw two pulled over being issued violations while there for a week. Kudos for making people adhere to the rules, but within reason. Spots are a little tight but you spend most of your time on the beach anyway. If you want shade, try staying back in the 4000 section. You can't have shade and a concrete pad though as they can't excavate and pour concrete without harming the existing trees. We usually stay up near the ocean, but next year we are staying back in the 4000's. As we have a golf cart proximity to the beach is not that critical. We stay here every year and make the following years reservations before leaving the current year. Always a great time at Ocean Lakes. We camped at Ocean Lakes Family Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Speak with the staff in the office. They can offer tips on best way to enjoy the ocean, like going after dark and seeing the glowing creatures in the water. Stay out of the water though, as that is feeding time for those that call the ocean home. Also, if you have a private cart, WALMART across the street is accessible by your personal golf cart (they don't allow rentals outside the gate).

Pole Position Campground, Bluff City, Tennessee

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $70.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here for the Spring race in 2018. The place was 1/4 full. Speaking with the super nice folks there working they stated its always that way for spring race due to people fearing the weather but the pace picks up for the fall race. The spots were level, plenty big enough and clearly marked. I have camped at/near many Nascar tracks and this is one of the better ones. The Bristol shuttle wouldn't service this campground but another vendor did. We would have been back this year but my spouse is deployed with the U.S Air Force. We will be back next year and most likely will do the Spring/Fall package. Highly recommend this place. You can take the shuttle or its a nice walk to the track. We camped at Pole Position Campground in a Motorhome.

Richmond KOA, Richmond, Indiana

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here over a birthday weekend just to get away before the weather gets too bad. The site was long enough and pretty level. The road coming into the campground could use some improvement. It is a long lane with "chips and dust" down. No matter how slow you seemed to go 5-7 MPH is still stirred up a huge dust cloud. As they are winding down the season there was not a lot of the amenities running so I can't comment on those, but the people seemed nice enough. The cable worked OK, didn't use the internet and the sewer and electric were fine. The water pressure seemed to fluctuate however. We would probably stay here again for a getaway weekend. We camped at Richmond KOA in a Motorhome.

Take your bikes and go get on the "Cardinal Greenway" it is an excellent gem. 65+ miles of paved bike/walk path. Well maintained and facilities along the way. We did 10 miles on it (5 out and back) and were impressed.

Sauder Village Campground, Archbold, Ohio

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed two nights and toured the village one day. Very nice campground with clean bathrooms/showers. The firewood and ice are on the honor system. The only complaint is the lack of cable TV. They have sketchy Wi-Fi, but think they should have put cable in when they did the new campsites. The village is a really neat experience if you don't try to rush it. We liked it so much we are headed back in two weeks to finish the village and pay more time and attention in the areas we felt we rushed thru. We camped at Sauder Village Campground in a Motorhome.

Camp LeConte Luxury Outdoor Resort, Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $69.00
Overall Rating:

We booked in July of 2016 for a July 4th 2017 stay. We were told a 4 night minimum due to the 4th falling on Tuesday. This was commensurate with others in the area including the one we stayed at in 2016. We are long time campers and understand minimum stays etc. During our stay we noticed several other campers coming and going. A couple of overnight stays and a few two-night stays. We questioned the owner about minimum stay requirement and why we were mandated to have a 4 day minimum, yet others were not. We got 4 different answers from the male owner, to include denying their ever saying that, and saying we should have looked at their policies when we booked on-line. We didnt book on line, we spoke with his wife/co-owner by phone on the way home from Gatlingburg in July 2016. The kicker is there were two parties in our group and both talked to the wife/co-owner and were told the same thing. We mentioned to the male/co-owner that we would be making a review on RV Park Reviews. He told us "everytime I have a disgruntled customer they threaten to do that....knock yourself out." The campground is decent, but there are many better options in the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area, moreso when you get hoodwinked when making reservations only to find that others were not held to that standard. We camped at Camp LeConte Luxury Outdoor Resort in a Motorhome.

Ocean Lakes Family Campground, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $85.00
Overall Rating:

We have come to Myrtle Beach 3 times in the last 4 years. Twice here and once at another competitor. Prefer Ocean Lakes by a ton. Yes it is big, yes there are lots of golf cars running around, but at the quiet time it gets quiet. Steps from the beach and never had a problem with anything coming up missing. We are going back in June 0f 2018. Nothing beats toes in the sand and a beverage in the hand. The water park is superb, but get there early if you want a chair in the shade. Overall Rating:

We last stayed here in July of 2013 on the way to Myrtle Beach. I was pretty hard on them in that review. We once again were headed to Myrtle Beach and tried them again. What a difference 4 years make. We stayed in one of their newest pull-thru sites below the activity center and along side the fishing pond. Sites were plenty long enough to not have to un-hook for our overnight stay and pretty level. Lots of activities for all ages, some cost extra, some included in the price. We would have no qualms about coming her again. If I had to pick out something to complain about, it would be the exterior roads getting to the campground, but they can't help that. We camped at Wytheville KOA in a Motorhome.

Anchor Down RV Resort, Dandridge, Tennessee

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $68.00
Overall Rating:

This is an annual Memorial Day Tradition with our family. We meet family from Georgia every Memorial Day and we stay here. Last year we stayed in 85-86 and this year we stayed in buddy sites 58-59. Park is always immaculate, the staff always helpful. The new additions of an additional bath house, dog park and pickleball/basketball courts are all welcome additions. Beware the facilities are all at the front of the park but terrain dictated it. It is a hilly park so nearly everywhere you walk will be uphill, some pretty steep. We enjoy it though for exercise. You can rent a golf cart for $30/day. Next year we will so we have the option of walking or riding. Only 4 miles to a Food City. This place takes reservations farther in advance than you think and it is necessary. We are already booked for 2018 & 2019. Required if you want a certain site (fireplace/buddy etc.) We camped at Anchor Down RV Resort in a Motorhome.

We only stayed here overnight on the way back from the OBX, but did walk around and look the place over. We arrived after closing and called the "Emergency Number" asking if they could accommodate some road weary travelers. The lady on the phone was very pleasant and accommodating. Got a pull thru site that handled our MH and Toad without having to unhook. They bathrooms were clean, the store looked well stocked and there was plenty to do, corn hole, jump pillow, pool, etc. We would stay here again. Cape Hatteras KOA, Rodanthe, North Carolina

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $110.00
Overall Rating:

We are KOA members and use them frequently. We know they are not all Taj Mahal's but they usually have a standard. Kind of like McDonald's. Not the best burger in the world, but you know what you get when you order. This one is Good but NOT great. Overpriced for what it is. They had a big display in the office/store with an article about this being the "First Company Owned KOA Resort" and it talked about how KOA moved to the tiers and how this one was NOT franchised, etc. I told my wife I would expect much better from the Company's flagship. The wi-fi was sketchy at best, and non-existant in most of the park. At check in they tell you, if you really need internet, come sit in the office or cafe. Also the cable is horrendous, snowy and would quit daily around the noon hour. Some people like to come back to their campers and get a break from the heat, watch a little TV and have lunch, you won't do it here. Most disturbing was the lack of security. Others in the area have attendants and the entrance making sure people coming in belong there, not so here. At check-in we were told "the locals come in here and steal stuff. They really like Yeti coolers." I also noted that there was not security at the beach access and essentially you are paying for all the people on the beach to have a really nice bathroom to use as you can watch them come into the park from the beach, use the bathroom and then leave. The locals all use the main road as their main access to the beach as well. It is not uncommon to see people riding bikes and walking in from Route 12 unchallenged. It would not cost much to have a gate at the beach with a code or swipe card access. We left a day early and lost the days rental rate and didn't feel that bad about it. We did have problems with some people from India in a rented RV who didn't understand personal space, etc. They responded immediately and tried to help. We camped at Cape Hatteras KOA in a Motorhome.

This is the "quiet side" of the OBX. If you want shopping close at hand, stay on the North side of the 64 bridge. The Food Lion 14 miles south is reasonably priced and well stocked.
