Claytor Lake State Park, Dublin, Virginia

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Beautiful park just 2 miles off the interstate - which makes it idea for both weekend or longer trips and also overnight stays while traveling (which we did). We stayed in a newer part of the campground (loop D) with many pull thrus and nice wide back ins. These sites are closer together than the more wooded older parts of the campground but are ideal for an overnight - site was so level I didn't have to unhook. We camped at Claytor Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Brialee Family Camping, Ashford, Connecticut

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This looks like a fantastic park for an extended stay. Lots of activities and facilities during the season. We were just overnighting on our way home and it's a bit far from the expressway for an overnight stop. But it's also one of the few campgrounds in the area that says open year round. The roads in/out are fine and it's really is a lovely family run campground. We camped at Brialee Family Camping in a Fifth Wheel.

Lancaster / New Holland KOA , New Holland, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $58.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed two nights while exploring Lancaster County. This is a very nice, clean campground located on the side of the valley overlooking beautiful farmland. Like most commercial campgrounds, the sites are side by side with few trees, but the sites are relatively level, well graveled and the facilities are clean. The park is central to Amish country and close enough to Hersey and other sites of interest. We enjoyed out stay there. We camped at Lancaster / New Holland KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

We were disappointed in Yeoder's Buffet - it was "off season" but most of the vegetables were canned or frozen with nothing special done to them. We've had better at a Sizzler.

Narrows Too Camping Resort - Thousand Trails, Trenton, Maine

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $63.00
Overall Rating:

We got bumped from the National Park campground due to extreme weather. Narrows Two took us in. There isn't a lot of trees at this campground so it was an ideal place to be in high wind. The sites are easy to get in/out of. All the roads are great and the sites level gravel. There are some very nice, semi wooded, bay side sites. Ours was in the section that is just some side/by/side pull throughs but suited out needs perfectly. Hookups were great - power and water strong. Staff is helpful. Laundry room was great, clean and new machines. We camped at Narrows Too Camping Resort - Thousand Trails in a Fifth Wheel.

Cedar Haven Campground, Freeport, Maine

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $58.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed just one night on the way to Acadia so that we could shop at L.L. Bean. Very attractive and clean campground. Owner/host is extremely nice. They do shuttle service to L.L. Bean if you don't want to unhook. Lots of things to do at the park including a small lake and kayaks, basketball, horseshoes, etc. If you look at it on Google Maps Satellite view, don't be put off by the fact that it backs up to an apartment complex. You'll hardly notice it and feel like you're out in the woods. We camped at Cedar Haven Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

The Ammonoosuc Campground, Twin Mountain, New Hampshire

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $57.00
Overall Rating:

Owner is very nice and helpful. Park is nicely wooded and sites are separated by a strip of trees which is nice. Roads are a little tight but we didn't have a problem. Sites are all pretty flat and easy to get in/out of. Fire pits are extra nice. Didn't visit the shower or rest room facilities. This Campground is in a great location to explore the area. Much less crowded than farther south. WiFi is very spotty - the routers appear to be older technology and drop in/out. Bandwidth is only fair when you are connected. ATT had one bar with dropped in/out depending on where we stood. But then - we don't come camping to use our computers. We camped at The Ammonoosuc Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Pine Grove Furnace State Park, Gardners, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

Would love to write a more detailed review but we pulled in after dark in the rain for an overnight stop. The roads are a bit tight but I didn't have a problem even at night in the rain. The site was large, long and easy to back into. I didn't care but there was NO ATT cell service for those of you that do care. We camped at Pine Grove Furnace State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Watkins Glen State Park, Watkins Glen, New York

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $29.00
Overall Rating:

This is a nice campground but just to reinterate things said by many other reviewers: 1) There is quite a hill to climb to get into the campground. 2) many of the campsites are muddy or dirt that gets pretty messy when it rains. Site 90 was OK, others looked like you would need waders. 3) If you have a tow-behind you better be really good at backing it because whoever laid out this campground never drove an RV. Most of the sites go off the road at 90 degrees with trees on both sides. Others actually go off at the wrong angle - like you would need to come in the wrong way on the one-way loop to back into them. No water at the campsites but a stand pipe every 6 campsites or so and an easy place to fill up on the way in. New multi lane dump station on the way out of the park looks really nice. Overall, a great place to camp, quiet, shaded beautiful. We camped at Watkins Glen State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Have lunch at the Elf in the Oak restaurant on N. 141 just outside town on the wine loop. This small, unassuming soup/sandwich and ice cream shop has a world class chef and creates some of the most amazing sandwiches and soups. They hand make everything from the pickles to the bread!

Byrd's Branch Campground, Elkin, North Carolina

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This would be an excellent campground for visiting the area OR for a quick one night stop while on the road (which is what we did). The owner was so nice and helpful both on the phone and in person. The sites are amazingly level - it's a bit of an optical illusion, you think you'll need blocks then discover that you are zero bubble in both directions. The backin campsites on the creek are shaded and have really nice fire areas next to the creek. The pull throughs are perfect for a quick, no unhook, overnight stay. We camped at Byrd's Branch Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Fall Creek Falls State Park, Spencer, Tennessee

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Tennessee state parks are some of the best funded, best run, cleanest in the U.S. and this park is a shining example. There is a LOT to do in this part hiking, kayaking, fishing, swimming, creek wading and more. The campground is large, clean and well maintained (see comment below). The staff is super friendly. We spent 5 days here and enjoyed every one! When I hooked up - the 50 amp circuit breaker was having problems - one side wasn't delivering power and it was making a crackling sound. I hooked up to 30amp and on a Sunday night, reported it to the office. On Monday morning, at 7:45am (LOL) the electrician showed up to replace the breaker!!!! I've NEVER seen that kind of service in a state park before. The only down side - which seem to apply to many Tennessee parks is the "levelness" of the RV sites. I had a Sr. Ranger tell me proudly (and defensively) that none of their sites were over 5 degrees of slope. Anything over 2 or 3 degrees is VERY hard to level a mid to large RV. We had all our blocks under one side and still couldn't get to within 2 bubbles of level. But that's my only complaint - everything else was perfect. Just be prepared if you're in an RV. We camped at Fall Creek Falls State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Camp Lake Jasper RV Resort, Hardeeville, South Carolina

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $55.00
Overall Rating:

I prefer State Parks over private campgrounds but all state parks were booked (too close to St. Patricks Day in Savannah). This park was a pleasant surprise. ALMOST as good as a State park. Clean, well laid out, not a bad camping site in the park and very friendly staff. Best feature is that the camp backs up to a lake and is connected to a County park with 2 more lakes and lots of hiking and fishing. Only reason I didn't rate it a 10 was the sites are close, not a parking lot, but not a state park either. But that's to be expected in a private campground that pays property taxes - you have to pack em in. Another nice thing - no long term residents or tradesmen that I could see. It seemed to be about 1/2 people pulling off I95 for the night and 1/2 people staying longer to play golf on Hilton Head, visit Savannah or just fish and relax for a few days. We camped at Camp Lake Jasper RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

About 20 minutes easy drive to Savannah for great sightseeing and seafood - make sure to eat at Mrs. Wilkes Dining room but get there at 10am for a noon seating (yes the wait is that long and it's worth it.) Also, if you drive to Hunting Island, eat at the Shrimp Shack between Beauford and Hunting Island. And look for Dempsy Farms on that road as well - u-pick strawberries in season.

Blanton Creek Park, Hamilton, Georgia

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed 3 days. The park is right beside the lake. About 1/2 the sites are lakeside and the other 1/2 have lake view. All sites are level with crushed gravel pads and great hookups. It's one of the cleanest campgrounds I've seen and the staff was extremely helpful. We camped at Blanton Creek Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Columbus Georgia is amazing! Civil War Maritime Museum, Infantry Museum -both amazing. The Riverfront has wonderful hiking and a zip line across the river. You can rent rafts, kayaks and more. Broadway street downtown has some really cool restaurants and shops. Then of course you're also within driving range of Wild Animal Safari, Little White House, FDR State Park, and Callaway Gardens. SO much to do near the park.

Pine Log State Forest Recreation Area, Ebro, Florida

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

So . . . we made a last minute decision to head to the Panama Beach area around Spring Break (although we're retired so SB is meaningless to us). Couldn't find any campground, public or commercial anywhere on the beach. Then I found the Sand Pond Campground at Pine Log State Forest. In many states, the State and National Forest campgrounds are pretty basic with no hookups, pit toilets, etc. NOT this one! It beats many State Parks I've been in. The campsites are arranged around a beautiful lake under pine trees. They all have cement pads and full hookups. Only negatives is the navigation - the road is narrow, winds through a fore mentioned pine trees and was OK for even the biggest motor home BUT will make you nervous. The road in is sand but was well graded, wide and in great shape so don't be afraid of it as you turn off the highway. Note that, other than some boring hiking through flat pine tickets there isn't much to do here. BUT, it's only 15 quick minutes from the beach and Panama City. Lets face it, even at most of the beach front state parks the campgrounds are far enough from the beach that you have to ride to the beach. I stumbled across this place but I'd stay here again in a heartbeat to visit the Panhandle beaches. We camped at Pine Log State Forest Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Florida Caverns State Park, Marianna, Florida

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Lovely campground. We were there in late March and there were already some skeeters but not bad given that we were camped right next to water. Had a nice view of a cypress swamp right out our back window. Site was level and long enough but VERY hard to back into given that it was at a right angle to the narrow road. Most of the backin sites seem to be at 90 degrees to the road. We were only there for the cave and some hiking but the spring and swimming hole looked fun too - just too cool while we were there. My only real complaint is the entry to the park - the posts on either side of the electric gate and the gap to go past the checking booth were both so narrow that I was really nervous going in. No reason for them to be that tight except that whoever laid this out has never pulled an RV or driven a big truck. We camped at Florida Caverns State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground, Swannanoa, North Carolina

Date of Stay: December, 2016 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

We visited Ashville to tour the Biltmore Estate during Christmas. Outstanding. And Mama Gertie's was a great place to stay - just about 10 minutes away but much nicer than the closer RV parks.

It is on a hill and it can look a little imposing when you first arrive. But the staff is so helpful and friendly and will help you get into your site. The roads are plenty wide and recently repaved. Turns require some care but are good for even the largest rigs.

Views are amazing especially from the upper parts of the campground. We camped at Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground in a Fifth Wheel.
