Lake Corpus Christi State Park, Mathis, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Nice park. Friendly staff. Nice loop pull through site. Like other Texas State Parks, camping fees are on top of a per day admission per adult. $25.00 camping + $10.00 for two adults per day. We were on the move, so did little exploring, but would plan to spend more time on our next visit to see more of the park. We camped at Lake Corpus Christi State Park in a Motorhome.

Seminole Canyon State Park, Comstock, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

First thing to know is, approaching from the north, the park is very poorly signed. The entrance is a couple of miles past the Pecos river bridge, but the sign is not the usual large state park format, and by the time you see it, at 60+ MPH in a big rig, you are not going to make the entrance. We waited for the unhelpful park employee to eventually shuffle out of her office hideaway to check us in. Later, visiting the excellent museum/interpretive center, we noted other visitors having the same experience. One was peering around the counter, asking if anyone was there. The park itself is lovely, though a bit buggy. Showers were modern, but cobwebs looked like they had been there forever. We would probably not stay here again. We camped at Seminole Canyon State Park in a Motorhome.

Fort Stockton RV Park, Fort Stockton, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Have stayed here before. A satisfactory pit stop when traversing West Texas. Quieter than one would expect being so close to the interstate. Not fancy, but we like the place. Really nice breakfast at the on site cafe. To our annoyance, main building showers and laundry were out of service, and looked like they had been for some time, based on the faded signs. When we entered the office, towels and gear in hand, office staff apologized, but did not mention that there was a bathhouse at the other end of the park with working showers. Found that out from the park map. Left us wondering if this park was starting to slide. Major facilities out of service, disinterested staff. It would be too bad, as we really like this place. We camped at Fort Stockton RV Park in a Motorhome.

Las Cruces KOA, Las Cruces, New Mexico

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This a very nice smaller park. Meticulously cared for. Gravel is raked and wetted down daily to reduce dust. Everything is well maintained and clean. Although handy to the I-10, there is no traffic noise. (Nor noise from trains or planes.) the park is part way up a hill, and overlooks the city and the mountains, which is spectacular at night. Location is handy to shopping etc. We loved this park. Our one complaint was the internet. As is often the case, it is provided by a third party. When connected, speed and performance are quite reasonable. But the connection was always being reset, forcing us back to the provider gateway page to reread the conditions of use and click to continue. We were doing email, a little banking, and reading news, trip planning research, etc. Nothing heavy on bandwidth. We would return again, but would be inquiring about the state of their internet connection first. We camped at Las Cruces KOA in a Motorhome.

Van Horn RV Park (formerly Van Horn KOA), Van Horn, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

There is limited eye appeal in this large flat crushed gravel park, but obvious effort has been made to make the best of what it is. A few trees, metal sculptures, etc. It has the feel of a place that is well cared for. Site was generous and fairly level. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Showers/washrooms are a little dated, but in good shape, well maintained, and clean. They are in the process of being renovated, and the first step was a new floor. Looks like some sort of acrylic with a gray background, and colored flecking. Very attractive, durable, moisture proof, and easy to clean. New counters and fixtures on on order, and all should be spectacular when completed. Van Horn is a stopping point when crossing the huge empty expanse of West Texas, but this place has made itself into much more than a pit stop. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Van Horn RV Park (formerly Van Horn KOA) in a Motorhome.

Caverns of Sonora RV Park, Sonora, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

We had stayed here before, so knew what to expect. The park is small, but neatly kept. Our site was gravel, not a generous space, but reasonable, and fairly level. Services all worked fine. We always enjoy watching the antics of the semi-tame deer here. The park is isolated, so bring all that you need. For the same reason, cell reception is patchy, so be aware you may be out of contact. The caverns themselves are a must see if you come here. They are spectacular. We would certainly come here again if we were by this way. We camped at Caverns of Sonora RV Park in a Motorhome.

Bayou Bend RV Resort, Baytown, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Very modern and well laid out park. Nice fairly level sights. Concrete pads and patios, grass between sites. Showers, washrooms and laundry top notch. (One shower stall needed the curtain laundered due to mold, but it was the exception.) WIFI was the best of any park we have ever stayed in. Cable also good. Very close to the I10, so there is constant road noise, but mostly rolling tire background. Not really an issue, unless you demand absolute silence. Office staff very friendly and helpful. Passport America discount was nearly 50%. We camped at Bayou Bend RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Bayou Segnette State Park, Westwego, Louisiana

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

Beautiful park. Lovely mostly large sites. Showers and washrooms are quite tired. Cleaning does not appear to be daily. Maintenance is wanting. Laundry facilities are free, but machines are in poor shape. Park location is handy to New Orleans. Reasonable value for the money, but would be willing to pay more to support fixing the place up. Staff were friendly and helpful. All in all, we would still stay here again. We camped at Bayou Segnette State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Don't miss the fresh fish market just down the road as you exit the park to the right towards New Orleans. Open seven days a week, fresh catch, oysters, shrimp, blue crab, etc. Really good, and very reasonable prices.

Pensacola RV Park, Pensacola, Florida

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Nice smaller park. Lots of open green space. Gravel sites, not too bad for level. Good wifi and cable. Quiet. Good laundry facilities. We were on the move, so our short stay did not allow for much exploration, but looked like lots of things to do and see near by. We would stay here again, hopefully for longer to allow more visiting. Charleston KOA, Ladson, South Carolina

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

KOA is on the one side of the property, and a mobile home park on the other. Neighbors in the park had their rig broken into, and sadly lost their cat. Park itself was very nice. Mature trees, reasonably generous site space, very attractive park. Staff were very helpful, as in "anything you need, just ask" sort of way. Some aircraft noise, mostly military, but not bad, not frequent, and mostly day and evening. No impact on sleeping. Park is about 25 minutes out of the downtown of Charleston, but an easy commute. Camping World and other major shopping within less than five miles. Site was pretty close to level. We would certainly stay here again. We camped at Charleston KOA in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

South Carolina Aquarium was worth the visit and cost. (Also, it's a non-profit, so happy to support their mission.) Patriot's Point also worth a visit if you have any interest in WW2 in particular, and the service in general. The scale of the Yorktown, her crew, and the support required to keep her operating at sea is amazing.

Flamingo Lake RV Resort, Jacksonville, Florida

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

The park is very beautiful, set on a recreational lake. Reasonably quiet, well landscaped. Shower stalls are a little small, and like many places, the shower heads are too low for anyone over six feet. On the down side, the internal roads were very narrow, therefore designated one way. Our angled pull through would have required an impossible hairpin turn to exit in the correct direction. Also, despite booking ahead, our pull through was not long enough to park off the road without unhooking, and tucking our tow vehicle up close to the coach. Others clearly had the same problem, resulting in their vehicles being near or on the road, further limiting maneuvering room in the park. Obviously this area was built in an earlier day when RVs were much smaller. There is a newer area we did not explore which is probably better laid out. If coming here again, we would request it. We camped at Flamingo Lake RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Wilson's Riverfront RV Park, Asheville, North Carolina

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

Access is difficult. Coming off the 240 N onto Amboy Rd, you have already passed the park. Access requires a hairpin turn, or a U-turn somewhere up the road. BTW, getting back onto the highway on departure is an equally difficult task requiring a left turn which leaves most of your rig stuck out in traffic. The park is small, perhaps 25 sites, right on the French Broad River, with access to the riverfront trail (runs down the middle of the park) which is a lovely walk or cycle. Showers were clean, but dated and tired. The floor outside the one men's shower stall was so badly rotted, I nearly went through it. Sagged a good two inches under foot, with ceramic tiles all split and broken. Looks to be many full timers, mostly well kept, with notable exceptions. We considered it very over priced for what it offered. Between that and the difficult access, we would not stay here again. We camped at Wilson's Riverfront RV Park in a Motorhome.

Do not miss Biltmore House. It's a bit pricey, but was utterly amazing. As well as the 255 room chateau, there is a winery, farm, etc. on 8000 acres. It is most impressive.

Whispering Hills RV Park, Georgetown, Kentucky

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful park. Very well laid out and maintained. Many sites have a view of a pretty man made pond. Sites are packed gravel, but are only large enough for most RVs. There are, however vehicles parking areas convenient to most sites. The last section of the access road to the park north of I75 is very narrow, with no shoulders to speak of. (Sloped and muddy, which I wouldn't trust.) Not sure how two RVs would get past each other. Park wifi at our site was OK. At times slow, probably due to high demand during peak use hours. About average for RV parks Staff are very friendly and helpful. Clearly they take pride in this lovely park. Showers/washrooms are clean, modern, spacious, and heated. We did have trouble with water pressure in one shower, but the rest were fine. We camped at Whispering Hills RV Park in a Motorhome.

Port Huron KOA, Kimball, Michigan

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $55.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here only one night on route south. Very pretty and well kept park. Very family oriented. The night we stayed, they closed the park roads for 2 hours for Trick or Treating. Lots of great decorating, lots of happy costumed kids, very festive, and obviously supported and encourage by the park. Very impressive. Didn't get a chance to use any of the facilities during our short stay. We found the nightly rate pricey, but that has been common in our experience of KOAs. Still, if your budget can take it, and especially if you're family camping, we would recommend this park. We camped at Port Huron KOA in a Motorhome.

Grand Ole RV Resort, Goodlettsville, Tennessee

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Limped in here with a coach chassis battery charging issue. (Called the RV service guy Neal, which the park recommended. He was great, and got us all fixed up the next day. And it was NO easy job.) Park people were eager to help and boosted us to restart the coach to get to our site. I swear, they would have towed it or pushed if need be. You could not find kinder or more helpful people. After a long and difficult day, that warm southern hospitality was medicine for the soul. Smaller park, mostly gravel sites, reasonably level. Park is very well maintained. WiFi is good near the office, but you will need a booster if you are farther away. Music and food provided most nights at the office/restaurant. Near a rail line and busy road, but surprisingly not too noisy. Owing to the size and location of the park, reservations are strongly recommended. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Grand Ole RV Resort in a Motorhome.
