San Angelo KOA, San Angelo, Texas

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Reasonably level, partially shaded site with excellent hookups, concrete patio with wire bistro table, two chairs and loveseat under a small outdoor light, separated from other sites by a privacy fence. Good cable, best WiFi connection on this trip. As our site was one of the most distant from the recreational facilities, we did not walk over in 106 degree heat, so cannot address them. Would happily stay here again. We camped at San Angelo KOA in a Motorhome.

Fort Amarillo RV Resort, Amarillo, Texas

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

Well-established park with shaded or open level sites that can handle any size rig. Inner roads are old asphalt or gravel. Sites are separated by fences. Good hookups, cable TV, but WiFi never let us in. Our personal hotspot worked just fine. Indoor swimming pool heater was broken, but in this excessive heat, it meant the pool was deliciously cool. Hot tub is not presently working. Toilets and showers in Rec Hall (where pool is) were pristine. Located near one of the main shopping/dining areas. Office is closed on Sunday, but reservation packets were posted on the wall just inside the doors. Because online reservations incur a $3.50 fee, our Good Sam discount came to 30 cents. Even so, we would happily stay here again. We camped at Fort Amarillo RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Hoffbrau Steak & Grillhouse for prime rib. Beef Burger Barrel, 3102 Plains Blvd, serves old style burgers, fries, tater tots, etc. Don't expect fast service, as it's a one very friendly person operation, but it's absolutely delicious. The tater tots and cherry limeade are the best in town, too.

Capulin RV Park & Camp, Capulin, New Mexico

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $29.00
Overall Rating:

Small, family-owned and operated, very friendly and helpful. Escorted to site and guided into the back-in site beside the washroom/laundry. Level gravel sites are tight, but big rigs still fit. Very quiet at night, even though it's right beside the highway. We'd happily stay here again. We camped at Capulin RV Park & Camp in a Motorhome.

Pueblo South / Colorado City KOA, Pueblo, Colorado

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

Long, level pull-throughs with lovely views of the mountains and prairie, with grassy areas between. Hookups worked perfectly. WiFi was strong and reasonably fast. Entry is asphalt, inner roads are gravel and easy to maneuver with a big rig. First time I've seen a pool table at an RV park. The social hall has handicap showers and restrooms. Recreation includes Frisbee golf, miniature golf, tether ball, basketball, horseshoes, and volleyball. There are also a nice swimming pool, fitness center and a hot tub. With the burn ban in place, the group campfire was not in use. Propane is available near the dump and water station. Staff was friendly and very helpful, offering cookies upon check-in. We would happily stay here again. We camped at Pueblo South / Colorado City KOA in a Motorhome.

AB Camping & RV Park, Cheyenne, Wyoming

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

They fit us in despite the Frontier Days being on. During the reservation call, he made sure we didn't need a satellite-ready site. Camp store has ice cream, some groceries, and RV items. Friendly staff is happy to help with whatever you need. Cable TV has a variety of stations. WiFi worked well. The entry and exit were being re-asphalted as we arrived; interior roads are gravel and easy to maneuver. We've stayed here before and are happy to have returned. We camped at AB Camping & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Casper KOA, Bar Nunn, Wyoming

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

An older KOA, true, but it's clean, everything works, and it can handle any size rig. This is an overnight KOA, not a "holiday KOA." The indoor swimming pool was lovely, as one could swim and cool off without being in the hot sun. Didn't use the hot tub. Camp store was nice, staff extremely friendly and helpful. WiFi was excellent. Over the air TV was okay, if you like TV. The sites are nearby, but not so close that one feels crowded. As a staging area for visiting the Casper region, this is an excellent location. We camped at Casper KOA in a Motorhome.

7th Ranch RV Camp, Garryowen, Montana

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

A dramatic view from each site, superb facilities, good WiFi, several over the air TV channels -- great location. The day we arrived, the county road was being graded to remove the washboarding, so that last half mile of dirt is pretty smooth now. All roads in the CG are gravel and easy to maneuver. Some sites have trees; most are still sunny, as the trees are young. Free ice cream bars upon check-in, and the office also has ice and quarters. You can wash your rig at your site, using minimum soap/water. Recycle cans at the shower house. It's a working ranch, so you'll see cattle and horses nearby. We'd happily stay here again. We camped at 7th Ranch RV Camp in a Motorhome.

Sunrise Campground, Bozeman, Montana

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Small, tree-filled park sandwiched between I-90 and the railroad tracks, our site was ideal for trainspotting. There is road and rail noise, but with RV air conditioners running, one can't hear it. The shade was lovely and no limbs were anywhere near our RV. Good WiFi and over the air TV, good cell phone service if you choose to use hot spot. Owner was friendly and very helpful, led us to the site and guided the back in. We'd stay here again. We camped at Sunrise Campground in a Motorhome.

Great Falls KOA, Great Falls, Montana

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $70.00
Overall Rating:

Greatly expanded from its original size, this campground can easily handle big rigs of all sizes. The big rig area has a 15' wide grassy area between each site, with picnic table and fire ring, and you'll be escorted to your site, which has a view of the countryside. The power and water are mid-site, and three sewer connections enable most any rig to hook up easily. Over the air TV was clear. The WiFi didn't work at all, due to the number of rigs at the campground, but the cell phone signal was strong enough to use my hot spot. The swimming pool has small water park features, and two steel hot tubs greatly eased tired, achy muscles. Inside the office, there's a camp store and ice cream by the scoop. The camp kitchen provides a pancake breakfast, and free music at night. There's also a hay ride. On the down side, there's only one location for dropping off garbage, across from the office in the entry. The entry is, frankly, dangerous, with pedestrians and vehicles alike moving about as if they are the only ones there. Still, I'd stay here again. We camped at Great Falls KOA in a Motorhome.

Centennial Park Campground, Claresholm, Alberta

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Tiny little park in the middle of town. Still, it can handle big rigs. When backing into a site, pay attention to the power pole near the front of the site. Sites 1-11 are full hookups, with picnic tables, and are wide enough to park a vehicle next to it. All had shade trees. Other sites were in the open. WiFi worked great until about 7:20 pm, when the other sites filled up. Office was open in the morning until noon, then closed until 4:00 pm, when it re-opened until 8:00 pm. Next to the community ball fields and mini-water park, yet it was not at all noisy. No fires were permitted. We camped at Centennial Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Devon Lions Campground, Devon, Alberta

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

One of the loveliest parks we've stayed in on this trip. Our pull-through was easy to get to, level, and faced a treed and grassy picnic area. Lovely walks around this city park and down to the river was very relaxing. Although busy during the day, it wasn't particularly noisy; after hours it was very quiet. WiFi was free and excellent. Having 50 amps was a real luxury after so many weeks of 30 amp or less. Very friendly and helpful staff. We camped at Devon Lions Campground in a Motorhome.

Country Roads RV Park, Grande Prairie, Alberta

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Quiet, out of the way campground, with long, level pull-through sites and 50 amp service! It's currently surrounded by road improvements, so the access is by dirt/gravel road, but it's a short drive. Do mind the potholes on the right side of the entry lane. Campground is gated at all times; one is issued a gate card, which must be returned upon departure or it will cost you $50. Friendly and super helpful staff, very nice small camp store with ice cream and pie, an indoor RV/car wash, and a pay WiFi that was fast and so much cheaper than my ATT international "service." Our site was immediately beside one of the WiFi repeaters. Spacious interior roads. The pull-through site we had was not terribly wide, but we fit just fine and there was enough maneuvering room around the picnic table to work under our awnings. Trees and grass separate the sites, so one still feels private. A number of upgrades were evident. The owner died a couple days before we arrived, so this campground's future is up in the air. If new owners keep the same business model and the staff, it will be a great location in future, as it is today. We camped at Country Roads RV Park in a Motorhome.

Hot Springs Campground & Hostel, Whitehorse, Yukon

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

Deep in the woods where it's so very quiet, it's one of the loveliest campgrounds in Canada. Do ignore your GPS when it tries to send you off Takhini Hot Springs Road and left onto the dirt Takhini River Road. Just stay on the paved road until you see the Hot Springs straight ahead. The campground (very small sign on the right) is on a dirt road to the right just before the hot springs. Wind your way through the woods and stop at the hostel, where you register and get directions to your site. No, you don't have water or sewer at your site, but both are easily available at the hot springs itself, just outside the campground. The pull-through sites are longer than any normal big rig setup; some may require a bit of maneuvering around the trees to enter, though. We had no trouble getting into site 24 with a 36' motorhome. Site 25 was only 20 feet away, yet we felt utterly private, as there are trees and undergrowth separating each site. The power was on the wrong side, but with our extension cord, hookup was easy. How refreshing it is to have 50 amps so far north... We would happily stay here again. We camped at Hot Springs Campground & Hostel in a Motorhome.

River's Edge Resort, Fairbanks, Alaska

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $58.00
Overall Rating:

Our site (H-2) was so tight that the neighboring (H-1) Fifth Wheel's awning was only inches from our port slide, and our door opened into trees and huge prickly rose bushes that are clearly never pruned. Electric post gave 30 or 50 amp power. Water pressure seemed a bit low, but was still more than adequate for needs. No room for a picnic table. WiFi worked well, when one could gain access, and that seemed to depend on time of day. Cable TV was bad; campground's package was the worst the satellite company offers. Some were pictures with no sound, some the reverse, some just snowy noise. The few clear ones were not worth watching. Car/RV wash on site. Camp store nicely stocked with souvenirs, but not much else. Wasn't necessary, as a Fred Meyer grocery, Autozone, and Walgreens Pharmacy were about a half mile away. Walking path along river goes past the resort's cabins to Chena's Alaskan Grill. Very friendly and helpful staff will sign you up for a variety of tours, and provide transportation to some. We would stay here again, preferably not in H-2, as it was not good value for the money charged. We camped at River's Edge Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Great Alaskan Bowl Company and Alaska Raw Fur Company are just outside the campground, both well worth the visit. Chena's Alaskan Grill is very expensive, even for Alaska, and while the food was good and there was a lot of it, it wasn't worth those prices. Don't miss the Gold Dredge No. 8 tour, both for the Alaska Pipeline and the dredge tour and gold panning.

Denali RV Park & Motel (Privately Owned), Denali National Park, Alaska

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

Tight slots and narrow roads made maneuvering in and out challenging, as other patrons parked vehicles very close to or directly in the roads. Sites are very narrow; the bushes on one side made using the picnic table impossible. Big rigs can get into the park, but be patient and prepared to request others move their vehicles out of the way. Camp store is quite nice. Sites are mostly level; if sloped as ours was, they slope to the front; we backed in uphill. The cable connection is on a pole that one must share with four other sites; you'll have to search for it. However, at our site we had only 4 channels, none worth watching. Wireless is generally good, but like all other Tengointernet connections, slows way down as the park fills up. When I really needed internet, I used my hotspot. Cell phone coverage was very good. We camped at Denali RV Park & Motel (Privately Owned) in a Motorhome.
