Patoka Lake State Park, Birdseye, Indiana

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here two nights and wish we could have stayed longer. Because we our stay was early in the season and on weeknights, there were no other campers in our loop of the campground. However, the morning we left a couple with a travel trailer arrived early and wanted our site - 117 other available sites in that loop but they were quite adamant about having our spot so they waited until we pulled out. Based on the number of campsites available throughout the park - weekends and summers must be busier. The sites in the campground are at all different angles and are of varying lengths and few are entirely level - ours had a slight downhill tilt. The bathhouses were extremely clean as was the campground in general. The park itself was fabulous - lots of hiking opportunities and great birding. There appear to be lots of park amenities & recreational activities - though we were there too early for any. We would like to return again to so some kayaking and other water activities. Not overly far from I-64. We camped at Patoka Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Huntington / Fox Fire KOA, Milton, West Virginia

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is a fairly easy-on-easy-off of I-70 near Huntington, WV, though the access road is a bit tricky. Because of the proximity to the Interstate there is a fair amount of traffic noise as well as sounds from occasional nearby freight trains. The campground seemed very well maintained with a few seasonal residents. One of the laundry rooms was being used for several hours by a woman who apparently provided a washing & drying service for other campers - though she did let me use two of the machines when requested. A good place for an overnight. We would stay here again if our travels took us through the area. We camped at Huntington / Fox Fire KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Hagerstown / Antietam Battlefield KOA, Williamsport, Maryland

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

The campground appears to be in a flood area as noted by several signs on the roads leading to it and evidence of prior flooding; this could be a problem depending on the time of year and the weather during your visit. Site was long enough to leave the trailer attached to the tow vehicle and was mostly level with only a slight tilt. Spaces were a bit close but were well maintained except for those closest to the creek (probably affected by flooding). The registration building, store, restaurant, laundry room, pool & maintenance buildings are tightly squeezed into one area. A few seasonal spots are located throughout the campground. There is an onsite restaurant that was not yet open during our visit except for pizza which was yummy - the pizza can be delivered to your site, though we opted to pick it up. There are chickens, ducks, lambs, and goats in a petting zoo of sorts in the campground - fresh eggs are available for purchase. A dairy farm sits adjacent to the campground property; depending on the direction of the wind, the smell from the barn and/or manure pile can be quite noticeable. Not a bad place for an overnight stay (though I wouldn't stay longer) and fairly close to I-81 & 1-70. We camped at Hagerstown / Antietam Battlefield KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Mounds State Park, Anderson, Indiana

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here for 3 nights - 1 weekday and 2 weekend nights. Sites were well spaced and nicely maintained. The toilets in the bathhouse were not particularly clean, especially the bottom portion of the base. Several of the toilets seemed to be leaking at the base - the wax rings probably need to be re-seated or replaced. There was a problem with the hot water in the showers during our stay - there wasn't any, which made for a very quick and bracing shower experience. The park has some very nice trails, though they are heavily used. If you are a birder there are a lot of different species in the park. There is a small airport adjacent to the campground - several small planes were taking off and landing on Saturday but not so much on Thursday & Friday. There is a very active railroad line nearby so train whistles might be a problem for tent campers. We camped at Mounds State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Salt Fork State Park, Lore City, Ohio

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed in a full hook-up site on loop C that was a back-in. It had a slight slope towards the back but nothing major. The restroom was very clean which was probably because we were there on a weeknight instead of weekend. The park has many amenities though all were closed because of the time of year. Lots of nice hiking trails. Would definitely return again. We camped at Salt Fork State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Killens Pond State Park, Felton, Delaware

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

The camping loops are oddly configured like gears in a cog so some of the sites are very close together. The sites are all back-in and heavily wooded which could create issues for wider trailers and vehicles. Because of the closeness of the sites and the heavy tree cover, campfire smoke can be thick. Campfires are supposed to be for cooking only, but that rule did not seem to be enforced during our stays. There is only one bath facility and it is closest to loops C & D. If you are in loop F or in any of the walk-in tent sites it is a bit of walk to the bath house. There is no parking at the bathhouse so you have to walk to get there. Like most campgrounds, the cleanliness of the bathhouse is dependent on the number and age of campers and whether or not it has rained recently. We stayed here twice in June for 3 nights each time; on weeknights the bathhouse was very clean - weekends when the water park was open, things were not so tidy in the bathhouse. The lakeside hiking trail is very nice. We camped at Killens Pond State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Delaware Seashore State Park, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $54.00
Overall Rating:

The main attraction to this park is that it is just a short walk to the beach and has full hook-ups. However, it is pretty much a big parking lot with very few trees and a lot of wind. There are two sections - one north of the bridge and one south of the bridge. The southern section, where we were, has more sites and is closer to the beach pavilion which has a restaurant and bar. The northern section appears to be somewhat newer and may have a tiny bit more space between the campsites. We camped at Delaware Seashore State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Bull Run Regional Park, Centreville, Virginia

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

This is a heavily used community park. The road to get to the park is narrow and has an unusual tight 10-mph turn off of Bull Run Post Office Road. The sites are inconsistent as far as levelness and have unusual hook-up arrangements. At our site the electric hook-up was on the wrong side and in a very odd location relative to the actual parking area. Our site was listed as a pull-through, but it was really just a pull-off adjacent to the road with some leveling issues. We camped at Bull Run Regional Park in a Travel Trailer.

Lums Pond State Park, Bear, Delaware

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

We had camped here some years ago and the camping area seems to have been renovated since then. The park is not too far from I-95. Our site was level and appeared to have been very recently paved with asphalt. Bath facilities were clean. Nice small pond in the park. We camped at Lums Pond State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Lake Erie State Park, Brocton, New York

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

This campground sits on the shore of Lake Erie - several sites have a view of the lake. The nearest larger city is Dunkirk; it is a trek to find a grocery store. The sunsets over the lake each evening were beautiful. There are very active rail lines nearby, so the sound of train whistles might be a problem for tent campers. It was a bit difficult to maneuver into our back-in site - we had to remove the sign post on the campsite opposite us to make the turn. The site itself featured a raised gravel driveway that was somewhat narrow and higher than the rest of the site, which also added to the backing in difficulty. The grounds throughout the campground were a bit uneven particularly around the bathhouse and on the dirt road in our loop. The showers and bathrooms were dated but very clean and the water pressure was great. There were no water hook-ups at the sites but a faucets were nearby and we were able to use two hoses to fill up when needed. The layout in our loop was like a wheel - the side-spacing between sites was good but there was not a great deal of space between the back-in ends of the sites. We camped at Lake Erie State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Seven Points Campground , Hesston, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

There are six separate camping areas in this park - several on the edge of the lake. We stayed in the Meadow Camp which is at the top of a hill and is supposed to be for larger groups of people (up to 15 on a site) though there were only 2 of us. The sites are quite large and level with a connected tent pad area. None of the sites have water hook-up but faucets are nearby, though they could have been better marked. The park has a very large beach area with a snack bar and a huge marina with a restaurant. There were many many boats on the lake. There is a substantial hill on the road to get into the park. Most of the camping areas, particularly Ridge & Meadow, are quite a distance from the beach and marina areas. It is possible to walk or bike to those areas however there are is a large hill to go up and down. The dump station was very large, level, and could accommodate more than one camping unit at a time, though there was a line to dump when we left. We camped at Seven Points Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Rocky Gap State Park, Flintstone, Maryland

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

We had camped at Rocky Gap many years ago before the Casino was added to the park. The park is still lovely and the Casino crowd doesn't seem to use the hiking trails too much. The campground is quite a distance from the Casino, lodge, & restaurants (about 2.5 miles away via the lake trail) and has it's own beach and boat rental facilities along with a small snack bar. Our campsite was spacious and heavily wooded with electric hook-up only. Water faucets are available throughout the campground. The site was a bit sloped but not too bad. Swimming was very refreshing after a 5-mile hike around the lake. We camped at Rocky Gap State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This campground is now a KOA facility. It is very convenient to I-40 and I-85. If you are in the area to visit the furniture stores in Highpoint or to shop at Replacements, Ltd., the location of this campground is great. We camped at Greensboro KOA in a Motorhome.

Delaware Water Gap / Pocono Mountain KOA, East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: September, 2012 - $57.00
Overall Rating:

The full hook-up sites are very close together - I could hear someone in the next RV snoring even with the windows closed. Some of the sites seem to be in low-lying areas where water accumulation might be a problem. The night we were there, quiet hours were not enforced - there was a loud unruly group who kept everyone else awake until almost 1 am, when the campground hosts finally shut them down. Would not stay here again. We camped at Delaware Water Gap / Pocono Mountain KOA in a Motorhome.

Champlain Adult Campground, Grand Isle, Vermont

Date of Stay: September, 2012 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Awesome location on the shores of Lake Champlain. Gorgeous sunsets. The campground is beautifully maintained and very quiet. The sites are grass-covered (no mats allowed), spacious, and most have views of the lake. Some seasonals, but they keep their sites clean and very neat. The owners are very friendly and extremely helpful. Highly recommend this campground. We camped at Champlain Adult Campground in a Motorhome.
