Flintlock Campground, Boone, North Carolina

Date of Stay: July, 2019 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

Flintlock is an older campground still operated by descendants of the founder. The Boone area is a roosting place for Florida snowbirds escaping the southern heat, as the mountainous terrain does provide some relief. The campground is no exception, with many of the sites occupied by seasonal campers who will migrate south in the fall. The campground is well maintained by owners and staff, all of whom are very friendly and helpful. The road through the campground is gravel. Sites are gravel and asphalt. Most sites are well shaded. As with most older campgrounds, sites are generally fairly narrow. The restrooms & showers are older but well maintained. WiFi was good, as was TV cable. Verizon cell service was also good. The only downside was the highway. The campground is located on Rte. 105, which has heavy car and truck traffic and attendant traffic noise. The campground entrance is not well marked. It would be wise to preview the entrance on Google maps prior to arrival. The campground entry road is steep and has a speed bump near the top, so slow speed on entry is good. Leaving the campground provides another exciting experience, as one must be extremely patient with the high speed heavy traffic. Despite the highway entry/exit experiences, our stay at Flintlock Campground was very pleasant and we would return again. We camped at Flintlock Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park, Limestone, Tennessee

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

This Tennessee state park is well maintained and pleasantly located along the Nolichucky River, midway between Jonesborough and Greeneville, the two oldest towns in Tennessee. The park is very well maintained, and unusual for a state park, comprises mostly FHU pull-through sites. A few E/W sites are available. Campfire pits are not provided at individual sites. Campers who must have a campfire must bring their own portable fire pits, or use the community fire pits provided. Roads and sites are paved. The sites in the first row along the river are considered "premium" sites with no discount. Sites in the second and third rows are not premium sites but are just as convenient to the river. The park has a swimming pool open in the summer season. Park staff are very friendly and helpful. The park has a replica of the Crockett home place, complete with gardens, fruit trees, and a variety of animals. There is no cable and no OTA TV reception, but WiFi is good. Many of the original trees in the campground have succumbed to disease, so most sites are open and sunny. The nearby towns of Jonesborough and Greeneville offer an abundance of sightseeing opportunities. This is an exceptional park and we will definitely return. We camped at Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Travelers Rest / N Greenville KOA, Travelers Rest, South Carolina

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $58.00
Overall Rating:

Stopped at this park for a very pleasant overnight stay on our way home from Florida. This campground is conveniently located on Rt. 25, in a ravine along Johnson Creek. All sites are located on a single gravel road along the creek. All but two sites are back-in. Sites are gravel and level. There was no noticeable noise from the highway. Note to all southbound travelers: The median on Rt. 25 cannot be crossed to enter the campground. Southbound travelers must pass by the entrance, then make a U-turn and enter the campground from the northbound lanes. When leaving the campground, southbound travelers must first turn north, then make a U-turn to go south. Large rigs will find it difficult and very unsafe to make this U-turn near the campground entrance. It is better to go on a bit and find a safe place to turn around. The campground is extremely well maintained, but the price and southbound accessibility are deterrents. We camped at Travelers Rest / N Greenville KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Cecil Bay RV Park, Cecil, Georgia

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Stopped at this park for an overnight stay on our way home from Florida. This campground is conveniently located alongside I-75, but there is a fair amount of road noise. Roads and sites are gravel. Sites are FHU plus cable and WiFi. Longer term residents are located further back from the interstate, while overnight sites are closer. This is a convenient overnight stop and we would stay here again. We camped at Cecil Bay RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Camp Florida Resort, Lake Placid, Florida

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed at Camp Florida for five weeks in late January through February, as we had done in the past two years. The rate shown is the monthly rate. Sites are back-in, mostly arranged in a series of circles, with a very clean restroom/shower/laundry building in the center of each circle. Campers with pets are limited to two of these circles; pets must not be larger than 20 lbs. A majority of sites are owned by permanent or seasonal residents, while some sites are available for rental. Roads are paved and the grounds are well maintained. Sites are all FHU and range from grass/sand surface to concrete paving with concrete patios. The rate shown is a monthly rate. There is no cable TV but major networks are available OTA. WiFi is available only at the community center and the pool house. Verizon cell service is very good. The community center is busy with bingo and other games in the evenings, concerts, exercise classes, and many other activities. A beautiful saltwater pool overlooks the lake. Outdoor activities include bocce, shuffleboard, tennis/pickleball courts, horseshoes, and a putting green. A boat ramp and dock are available for boating enthusiasts. Park residents are very active and extremely friendly. Camp Florida is a gated community; a supermarket and Dollar General store are conveniently located just outside the gate. We plan to stay at Camp Florida again. We camped at Camp Florida Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Blueberry Hill RV Resort, Bushnell, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

Stopped at this park for an overnight stay on our way to southern Florida. This campground is a Sun RV Resorts property. Of the 404 sites, 96 are FHU pull through. Roadways and sites are paved and level. CG is very convenient to I-75. We did not hook up water or sewer or use any other amenities. Price was far too high for an overnight stop, so we will not stop here again. We camped at Blueberry Hill RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Country Boy RV Park, Madison, Georgia

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Stopped at this park for an overnight stay on our way to Florida. Most sites are occupied by long term residents, but there are about ten pull through sites for transients. Roads in the park are paved, sites are gravel/mud. Sites are FHU plus cable and WiFi. We did not use water or sewer as our trailer was still winterized and temperatures were below freezing. Only one other transient site was occupied during our stay, but demand is higher in warmer months, so call ahead. We usually go to the McDonalds for breakfast a few miles north at the I-20 interchange, as they have a large convenient area for truck & trailer parking. We would stop here again for an overnighter. Roan Mountain State Park, Roan Mountain, Tennessee

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

Visited this park again to enjoy the cooler mountain temperatures. The park is extremely well maintained. Roads and sites are paved, although tent site pads are pea gravel. Sites are level side-to-side. Sites 1 to 20 are premium RV sites, not eligible for any discounts. There is one pull-through site; the remainder are back-ins. These sites have a paved living area with a picnic table. Sites 21 to 40 are tent sites, perhaps the nicest tent sites we have ever seen. Sites 41 to 90 are located across the river and up the hill. Big rigs should not attempt these sites. All these sites are back-in, and most will require backing in uphill. The pictures do not really show how steep the grades are. Our site was a barely 12 foot wide strip of pavement with a gravel slope down to a picnic table. We had just enough room alongside the trailer under the awning for two small camp chairs. There is no cable or OTA TV and no cell service. However, there is very excellent WiFi throughout the campground. The staff have a Verizon network extender in the campground office, which provides a Verizon cell signal within a few feet of the office. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Beware the speed bumps! Crossing the speed bumps at more than creep speed will scramble the inside of your rig! There is a single dump station where the line is long as check-out time approaches on busy weekends. The park includes a nice swimming pool, amphitheater, and tennis and volleyball courts. This is a very popular park, so advance reservations are necessary for the more desirable sites. We will visit this park again. We camped at Roan Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

Stopped here for overnight on way east. Campground is convenient to I-40, but far enough that there was no traffic noise. Road and sites are gravel. Sites are level and provide ample space for awnings and slides. Unisex restrooms and showers were new and very clean. WiFi worked well. It is best to call ahead for a reservation. This is a very pleasant and convenient overnight stop. We would return again. We camped at Ivy's Cove RV Retreat in a Travel Trailer.

Woody Mountain Campground & RV Park, Flagstaff, Arizona

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed at this campground for nearly a week. Campground is nestled in a mature pine forest, so there is lots of shade and wind whistling through the pines. Many sites are occupied by longer term campers seeking the cooler weather. The campground is located on the western side of town on old Route 66. They do not have a city water connection and must truck in all their water. Roads are gravel, and sites are gravel and crushed lava rock. Some leveling may be required. Sites are reasonably spaced, given that they are located in between the trees. Electrical breakers were located at a central panel, not at the individual site. Restroom and showers were old but clean. Campground staff were friendly and very helpful. A small laundry is open during office hours. There is a café in the office popular for breakfast and lunch. There is no cable TV, but major networks and PBS are available OTA. WiFi worked well, except in evenings when the campground was full. We enjoyed our stay at Woody Mountain and would return again. Williams / Exit 167 / Circle Pines KOA, Williams, Arizona

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

We took our granddaughter to this CG for a few days just before she started 1st grade. With lots of activities, this is a great place for kids. The bounce pad, mini-golf, gem mining, swimming pool, "train" ride, and other activities keep the kids delightfully busy. The main entry road is paved, while other roads and sites are gravel. The CG is situated on the side of a gentle hill and the sites, all pull-thrus, are cut into the grade. The sites are not entirely level and leveling blocks are necessary. Check-in is easy and quick. Staff are friendly and provide an escort to the assigned site. Restrooms and showers are clean and well maintained. There is a large, well-stocked campground store and a grill serving meals on selected days. This is a large, very busy CG with high turnover and lots of children. Be aware that not all the activities are included in the price. Considering this CG was awarded the KOA President's Award, there were some glaring issues. There was a large pothole right at the intersection of the entry drive and the county road. During our stay that pothole was never filled, even though it would have taken only a couple of bags of asphalt patch to fill it. That was surprising for such a busy and high priced campground. The swimming pool had a cloudy appearance as if the filtration system was not working correctly. Other KOAs we have visited recently had sparkling clear pool water. Perhaps the issue was related to the fact that this CG has no local source of water; all water for the CG is trucked in daily. If we were traveling with children, we would stop at this campground again. No children, we would pass on by. We camped at Williams / Exit 167 / Circle Pines KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $39.00
Overall Rating:

Overnight stay on our way west. Roadways are paved, while sites are generally gravel. This is an older park but well maintained. There is adequate space between sites for slides and awnings. The campground is very close to I-40, although the traffic noise was not bothersome. There is a nice sparkling clear pool that looked inviting on a hot day. We stayed at this CG when eastbound two weeks later, and learned that after our earlier departure the area was struck by a severe storm. The office and restroom roofs were badly damaged and repairs were underway. There are no nearby services but the CG operates a café with good pizza and salads. This is a convenient overnight stop, and we would stay here again. We camped at Elk City / Clinton KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Overnight stay on our way west. We arrived after dark due to a delay with a tire blowout. We were met by one of the staff who was working late in the office that night. She directed us to our site, and also provided directions to a local store to replace our spare tire the following morning. This was a very pleasant overnight stay at a well-maintained campground. Parkers Crossroads RV Park and Campground, Yuma, Tennessee

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

On our way west we had planned to stop overnight at Parker's Crossroads, having had good experience there previously. This time, we experienced a blowout of a trailer tire which punctured a hole in the trailer floor. Finally arriving late in the evening after the office had closed, we were met by campground co-owner who explained that we were in luck, as the campground also offered RV repairs. True to his word, at 8 the following morning, he and another employee started work to patch the hole in the floor of our trailer and had us set to leave in less than an hour. We were certainly delighted with this pleasant and prompt service. You don't find such delightful and helpful folks very often. The campground is about a mile north of I-40, far enough to mute traffic noise yet not inconvenient. Most sites are gravel, although there are a few concrete pull-thrus. Water pressure is high, so be sure to use a pressure regulator. The campground staff are friendly and helpful. There is a very inviting crystal clear swimming pool. Parker's Crossroads is a very pleasant campground and we will undoubtedly stay there again. We camped at Parkers Crossroads RV Park and Campground in a Travel Trailer.
