Icelandic State Park, Cavalier, North Dakota

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Just west of Calvalier, ND is the Gunlogson State Nature Preserve and dammed up Tongue river with a nice visit-nature-history-office, with five historic buildings including the beautiful Hallson Icelandic Lutheran church, all you can enter. The Icelandic State park CG cost is $25/day plus $7/each day fee, so $32/day actually. The CG has three loops, plus a primitive cg area. the bathhouses in two of the loops were already closed in mid-September. All three looked externally very nice. All the mostly gravel sites are pull through arcs by the paved roads with electricity. Most sites are slanted side to side some. There are scattered water faucets by the roads, all most all needing about a 20 foot plus hose to get to. There is a entrance area dump. Lots of bass and bur oaks trees. There is the large Renwick lake with rental boats in season. Easy biking about. We camped at Icelandic State Park in a Motorhome.

Bifrost-Riverton campground, Riverton, Manitoba

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Brand new city park just opened several months. Fourteen well graveled flat pull through sites with EWS with well grassed wide space between sites. Each grassed interspace has 4 flowering bushes and one small tree planted. Several blocks away is the Icelandic river with a beautiful arc bridge, boat dock and park with monuments to the Icelandic pioneers that settled here in the 1840s. The park manager we met was most pleasant and helpful. At mid September at the main highway by Riverton, there was only a icon park sign; no campground name. Manager said they have a fuller Bifrost-Riverton cg sign planned. The city of Riverton is the joining together of the towns of Bifrost and Riverton, hence the park's Bifrost-Riverton campground name. We camped at Bifrost-Riverton campground in a Motorhome.

Cottonwood COE, Crofton, Nebraska

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $8.00
Overall Rating:

One of two COE CGs at the base of the Gavins point dam on the Missouri river/ Lewis and Clark lake. Cottonwood CG has 73 paved back-in, and 4 curved pull-through, mostly not quite level sites with 30/20/50 electricity, but only 4 water faucets, only one close to one of the loop roads. Lots of huge cottonwood trees. A half mile north up the entrance road is a multiple dump and potable water facility. Cottonwood is at the base of the dam and Nebraska tailwaters CG is on the south side of the Missouri river. There is a nice COE visitor center overlooks the south side of the dam. There is a Pierson ranch CG north of the dam, and a state Chief White Crane CG one the east side of Lake Yankton. Lots of biking along the paved roads. The spillways were spectacularly wide open roaring while we were there. A very beautiful historic area. We camped at Cottonwood COE in a Motorhome.

Fort Massac State Park, Metropolis, Illinois

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Labor day holiday fee was $30 plus $5 reservation fee. Usual fee $20. The campground is two loops with back in packed small gravel level sites with generous well grassed spacing and scattered trees. No water at sites, but several faucets by the loop's road. Well designed dump by cg entrance. The park is about 5 miles east of I 24, on the edge of Metropolis, and right by and on high bluffs of the wide Ohio river. The park is large with excellent paved roads, extensive lush grass and many trees, with disc golf baskets, terrain both level and with ravines. There is a nice small well done history/office, a multi buildings replica of one of the early forts, and the outline ditching of an even earlier fort, and a large boat put in at the base of the bluffs. Lots of roads for biking. A really nice park, one of my all time favorites. We camped at Fort Massac State Park in a Motorhome.

New River State Park, Laurel Springs, North Carolina

Date of Stay: August, 2019 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

The New River 12 years earlier was saved from being damned up, and instead designated as a State Scenic River keeping the River wild and natural. There is hiking and river canoeing and kayaking. The park has a large nice wooded ecological teaching center with exhibits and a ranger station in a very nice brown wooden building with a covered walkway around it overlooking the hill side into the forest. The campground has paved loop road with 20 large and wide mostly level packed gravel sites, varying with E and full hookups. Two paved handicapped sites by nice modern clean bathhouse with hot showers. Sites have mowed grass and wild plants between, and the whole park is very well kept. It is Hilly. A hiking path leads down to the river some distance away. No play grounds. A nice get away park. We camped at New River State Park in a Motorhome.

4 Aces RV Park, Kinsley, Kansas

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Just off US 50, but quite and peaceful with 37 spaces, 7 apparently kept for transients. All very neat and clean with level pull through concrete pads for half of the sites including transient sites, with gravel back ins for the rest. All with EWS and nice metal tables. Well kept grass between sites. Bath house and laundry in an attractive very clean building. Borrow DVD's and book exchange. A large metal pavilion with cooking/bar area, tables, chairs, and swing. Horse shoe pit, path by Creek, one horse and two large monkey metal sculptures add interest. Owner was very pleasant. Takes cash or check. Wi Fi slow. Nice RV park. We camped at 4 Aces RV Park in a Motorhome.

Valley of Fires Recreation Area (BLM), Carrizozo, New Mexico

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $9.00
Overall Rating:

Campground 0n a long ridge line of a sandstone ridge surrounded on all sides by black Lava fields with all around views of the lava and far mountains. Northern section RV sites with E,W, and variable level asphalt sites with a sturdy roofed shelter and metal table/benches. The more southern section for tenters with water faucets scattered about and pit toilets huts. A large beautifully tiled bath house is in the RV section with an information/bookstore next to it. A guard railed switchback asphalt path leads in to a long loop through the lava field with it's flows, collapsed tubes and crevasse pits with all sorts of desert flora growing any where it can. Signs with information and pictures unfortunately are badly weathered and hardly legible. There is a central rugged ridge knoll you can climb with a 360 view. This is a beautiful peaceful campground. There is often lots of slope winds. We camped at Valley of Fires Recreation Area (BLM) in a Motorhome.

Elk City Lake Park Campground, Elk City, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

Agree entirely with previous reviewer, a beautiful site by the lake. It is at the end of the park past the boat put in and picnic tables. There were 2 RV/tenters who came after the 5 sites were taken and they overnighted at the side of the tarmac apron by the turnaround loop. There is a water faucet by the first picnic shelter that an RV can reach with a 30 foot hose to fill a fresh water tank. Thank you Elk City parks for providing such a nice facility. We camped at Elk City Lake Park Campground in a Motorhome.

PJ Hoffmaster State Park, Muskegon, Michigan

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

Large cg with 3 large loops of sandy dirt more or less level sites, 14 being pull throughs with 50 30 20 amps, rest 30 20 amps. Variable size sites many poorly defined. Lots of large trees. Small play ground. A dump toward the entrance. Three standard clean Michigan park bath house for 293 sites. CG tarmac roads rough with potholes, some being repaired presently. There is a trail to the lake I didn't take. Office lady was very helpful and pleasant. An overnite stay. I was not impressed with the CG itself. The park includes a further away beach area and a Sand Dunes nature center with trails and stairways in the impressive dunes which are the attraction. I would not care to use this cg again. We camped at PJ Hoffmaster State Park in a Motorhome.

South Marcum Campground, Benton, Illinois

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $8.00
Overall Rating:

Our 3d overnite stay in Owl's Roost section in 7 years. Well kept COE park with paved roads and sites. Extensive biking and hiking paths, lots of forest with deer, squirrels seen. Other sections have sites by the large lake. At Owl Roost electric only at 11 of 18 sites. a toilet/sink hut only with a water faucet close by in center of Owl Roost loop. Dump near entrance. My main complaint is almost all sites in the park are unlevel as seen from a biking around, many badly. Overall, the park is a great public resource. We camped at South Marcum Campground in a Motorhome.

Markin Glen County Park, Kalamazoo, Michigan

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

This is one of the best CGs I ever have been. Paved roads and large wide level paved sites with large patios, widely separated with good mowed grass, few small trees, EWS. Huge park with tennis court, playground, an extensive 8ft wide paved bike/hiking path surrounding 2 lakes with a sandy swimming beach, all very well maintained, and a entrance dump. Across the highway is another large wooded section of the park. All this for $28. Reservations available. Kalamazoo county parks deserves applause for a great job. We camped at Markin Glen County Park in a Motorhome.

Woodland Park Campground, Grand Marais, Michigan

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

First come, first served, and almost full Sept 21 and 22d. At this time the western half of the CG is closed because of new utilities being placed in a long deep trenches. The eastern side is open but with the lake side sites taken mostly by longer stayers. Grass mostly level sites with lots of trees. The day we arrived there was a fierce wind storm coming off the lake; you could hardly stand up on the edge of the bluffs overlooking the sandy beach and the wind driven waves. And, the power to the whole town and CG went out. Bathhouse - no lights. Next day power back and walked the soft sand beach accessed by two stairways. The town is nice to walk about. A narrow very winding road goes west to Pictured Rocks. I liked this CG and its high bluffs and sandy beach overlooking lake Michigan. We camped at Woodland Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Ludington State Park, Ludington, Michigan

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

I divide my review as a poor cg, but a most excellent park. I had the $32 MI annual pass but still $37/ nite. There are 3 separate cgs, Pine, Cedar and Beechwood, along a paved road by the short Sable river running between Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake. The cgs are in three narrow valleys with very close central sites fairly level, with peripheral sites short and unlevel dirt slooping up the sides of the valley/ravines. Bathhouses standard MI, clean with hot showers. (I had a paved handicapped site; others dirt.) The park itself is great with paved meandering walking/biking trails on both sides of the road and the river. Lots of hiking trails. a 2 mile gravel road to the lighthouse you can bike, the dam impounding the river, and signs about the vanished little town of Hamlin. Beautiful forest trees. I didn't get to the Lake beach. We camped at Ludington State Park in a Motorhome.

Merrick State Park, Fountain City, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

Overnite stay. The out of stater price was an $11 fee plus $31/ nite so price wise $42, much over priced. The north cg was itself a nice paved loop with gravel mostly level sites well spaced with electric post at back side of site. Lots of nice grass and trees. Only 2 water non threaded water faucets. Didn't use the bath house. A short trail to a lake inlet. A close by train track. There is a dump between the 2 campgrounds we didn't use. We drove through the south cg long loop which is a distance away and is mostly small short sites for tents, without electricity. The middle of the south loop is basically a swamp. We camped at Merrick State Park in a Motorhome.

Ontonagon Township Park and Campground, Ontonagon, Michigan

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Overnighted Sept 24, a Monday, so there were many vacant sites to choose from. We were on a sandy site facing Lake Superior just 3 sites west of the little office. Adequate site width. The water faucet was a shared one a distance away, the electric post right there. The narrow sandy beach had lots of logs washed up, one a beautiful cedar stripped of bark. The bath house was clean but showers 75 cents for 6 minutes. The camp road was paved. Sites varied for levelness. Scattered areas of trees. The campground attendant friendly helpful and very talkative. A nice stay. We camped at Ontonagon Township Park and Campground in a Motorhome.
