Little Crater Lake USFS campground, Estacada, Oregon

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

A little too expensive for what you get, but still a lovely, wooded campground with nearly-level sites for small to medium-sized RVs just off a paved road. Near Timothy Lake and a lot quieter. The main attraction is a geological curiosity: a large, crystal-clear spring. If you walk around in the nearby meadows, you can get glimpses of Mt. Hood. Mostly sightseeing and a little bit of hiking. Access to the Pacific Crest Trail. Other activities (boating, fishing, etc.) at nearby Timothy Lake. We camped at Little Crater Lake USFS campground in a Motorhome.

Lost Lake USFS Campground, Mckenzie Bridge, Oregon

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $8.00
Overall Rating:

A "hidden" campground -- no sign, you have to use GPS or know just where to turn off the highway. 15 sites, most wildly off-level. Tight turnaround means this isn't really big rig friendly but there are 1 or 2 sites at the end that are long enough if you can get to them. This is right below Santiam Pass and because the lake disappears most of the year it is more of a large meadow, ringed with cottonwoods, than a lake. There is decent cell service from a tower at the ski area on top of the pass. Most of the year this campground is empty, unlike the campgrounds downriver at Detroit Lake which fill every weekend, so it can make an overflow campground although it's 30 miles away from Detroit. Trailheads into two wilderness areas are just up the highway. No views of the famous snowcapped peaks from the campground itself but there are nice views of several of them just up and down the highway. This campground has remained untouched by the numerous forest fires that have ravaged the Santiam Pass area. Not much to do in camp. This campground is used mostly by hunters in the fall. It would probably make a decent base camp for backpackers using the Pacific Crest Trail, which is a few miles away, or for photographers shooting the nearby volcanos, some of which are snowcapped. We camped at Lost Lake USFS Campground in a Motorhome.

Deep Creek Campground USFS, Prineville, Oregon

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $8.00
Overall Rating:

A long drive in on Forest Service road 42 but it's paved all the way. Ample sites, many of which can take a big rig with a creek (actually the N. Fork of the Crooked River) coming right next to camp. Not much to do in camp; this is mostly used by hunters. Summit Meadow, a huge grassy area you'll pass on your way in, reportedly is full of wildflowers in spring. Main activities in the area are deer hunting and rock-hounding. We camped at Deep Creek Campground USFS in a Motorhome.

Hideaway Lake USFS campground, Estacada, Oregon

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $19.00
Overall Rating:

A nice high-elevation campground that is "away from it all" and a little too popular. This is for smaller trailers only; officially 16 feet or shorter but you can probably squeeze in a 20. Gravel road in is not bad. Fishing, swimming, hiking. Shellrock Lake, in a Wilderness area, is about a 2-mile hike from the campground. We camped at Hideaway Lake USFS campground in a Motorhome.

Olallie Meadow USFS campground, Estacada, Oregon

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

This is truly Roughing It. Along the road on the way in to Olallie Lake Resort, the last 2-3 miles of the road are unbelievably rough. You will be driving at walking speed. Beautiful high-elevation meadow in a designated scenic area with dozens of alpine lakes nearby, most of which require a short hike. There is a historic cabin in the campground that you can stay in for an additional fee. There is no cell service here and not even any radio stations. You are literally away from everything and everyone. Very peaceful and quiet and you will never want to leave. The main things to do here are fishing and hiking. Also spectacular views if you're a photog. Tons of alpine lakes in the area. A few are next to a road but most require a short hike. We camped at Olallie Meadow USFS campground in a Motorhome.

East Bay Campground USFS, Silver Lake, Oregon

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $5.00
Overall Rating:

Of the three campgrounds on or near Thompson Reservoir, this is hands-down the best. Paved, almost pothole-free road all the way in, plus paved loop and sites. At least two sites that can take a big rig. Beautiful sunsets. Fish in the lake. Geese and pelicans in abundance. Very weak cell signal, but some camp neighbors were getting calls. We camped at East Bay Campground USFS in a Motorhome.

Antelope Island State Park - Bridger Bay Campground, Syracuse, Utah

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

This campground's main asset is: QUIET. No trees, but the picnic tables are shaded with pavilions. Paved all the way through, including the almost-perfectly-level sites. And the price is darned decent for a state park. Rate reflects 2018 First Night rate; 2nd and later nights are $12. Cell signal is adequate for voice but you need a router or "booster" to do Internet. We camped at Antelope Island State Park - Bridger Bay Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

On the island, it's mostly hiking and watching the bison herd that roams free. It's a few miles to town (8? 12?) but but if you go there make sure you get back before they lock the gates at night. I would definitely stay here again.

Junction West RV Park, Grand Junction, Colorado

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Rate reflects monthly rate. Grand Junction has gotten to be an expensive town. This park is no worse than the others; everyone in this town is way too expensive. You will never find nicer and more helpful staff in any RV park in the country. I see noise complaints from other reviewers but frankly, this park is quieter than most if not all of the others in town. Far enough from the freeway & major highways that you don't hear them. The only drawback is the electricity. I and one other tenant were severely overcharged. If you're a monthly be sure to read your meter yourself when you move in. We camped at Junction West RV Park in a Motorhome.

Green Trees Crazy Woman Campground, Gillette, Wyoming

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is much nicer than the prior reviewers are saying. First of all, anyone who can't go up the mild little hill on the way in should stay out of the Western US and its mountains. If that hill is too much for you you're not going to like the Tetons or Idaho or Utah or Oregon and you certainly won't like Colorado! I picked a pull-through in the expensive row, which is the nicest, but getting level is definitely a problem. Owners were out of town but answered the phone on the second try. I didn't see much trash, or trashy people. It was a fine spot with beautiful mature cottonwood trees. We camped at Green Trees Crazy Woman Campground in a Motorhome.

High Plains Campground, Gillette, Wyoming

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Went there because all the reviews said the other RV park in town is worse. No. This one is worse. Office was locked up with a sign on the door with instructions to self-register -- cash or money order only. They don't take checks. No one answered the phone # given, and no one ever called back. I didn't have cash on me and wasn't going to drive into town, get money order, and drive back. I went to the other RV park. It is nice. This one is dry & dusty, no shade, nothing that is level. We camped at High Plains Campground in a Motorhome.

Laramie KOA, Laramie, Wyoming

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Water was shut off for the season, so I presume price reflects winter rate. OK. Just OK, nothing special, nothing terrible. Gravel lot with hookups within sight (and sound) of the freeway. Best signage for finding the place I've ever seen. We camped at Laramie KOA in a Motorhome.

Red Desert Rose Campground (formerly RV World Campground), Rawlins, Wyoming

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

Price probably reflects winter rate, as they had shut off the water for the season. It's OK. Nothing special, nothing bad, just OK. Basically a gravel lot with hookups, just like the RV park next door. We camped at Red Desert Rose Campground (formerly RV World Campground) in a Motorhome.

River Camp RV Park, Meeker, Colorado

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

NOTE: Map location is wrong!! Park entrance is about 1/2 mile SW of the pin. From Kum & Go (gas station), go south on SR 13 and take a right immediately at the end of the bridge over White River. Correct GPS coords is: 40.019761, -107.964401 A nice, pleasant, reasonably-priced, no-frills spot to spend a night or a week. Mature cottonwoods give plenty of shade for some sites; others are in the open. My site was dead-level. I would stay here again. We camped at River Camp RV Park in a Motorhome.

Hittle Bottom Campground - BLM, Moab, Utah

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $8.00
Overall Rating:

Of the 13 BLM campgrounds on this stretch of the Colorado River, this one isn't great but better than some. Right off the paved highway; no rough roads and all of the RV sites are nearly level - but a literal stone's throw from the highway so watch your pets. Spectacular views that you've seen in several Western movies. River is muddy and the wind blows constantly. Closest water is 20+ miles away in town so come with your fresh tank full. Don't count on getting cell service even with a booster -- it's very weak and fades in & out. Busy season for this area is spring and fall. We camped at Hittle Bottom Campground - BLM in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Most of the area activity involves 4WD, ATV and dirt bike riding. There are a few mediocre hiking trails and one awesome one at Fisher Towers, and dude ranches nearby that offer horse trail rides. Rock climbers flock here. And of course there is river rafting. The river is exceedingly muddy; I'd be surprised if there are any fish in it. Ample photography opportunities, which many movie studios have taken advantage of over the decades: John Wayne has been here several times.
