Anthony/El Paso West KOA (formerly American RV & Marine Resort & Rally, Anthony, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

A very simple park (hence the "Journey" category) and perfect for a 1 or 2 night stay. 80-foot pull thrus with very wide interior roads make navigation very very easy, even at night. There is construction on the frontage roads next to I-10, so make sure you check with staff for proper directions. A bit steep in price for what is essentially a large gravel lot with a fenced in tot lot and K-9 play area, but convenience comes at a price in this area. When passing through this area, we will be back. We camped at Anthony/El Paso West KOA (formerly American RV & Marine Resort & Rally in a Motorhome.

Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, Fredericksburg, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Our second stay and better than the first! We once again stayed in the upper sites next to the airport fence line. The planes are fun to watch and only the occasional jet is an annoyance. The park renovations from earlier in 2018 are completed and were primarily focused on the lower sites. The addition of new power pedestals allows for back-to-back parking in some sites and the choice to face either direction in the pull-thrus. However, the lower sites are not nearly as level as the upper sites, so choose carefully. The addition of the community dog park along the airport fence line is a major plus for us and while it gets moderate use, I never recall hearing dogs barking or noticing the increase in traffic from folks parking outside. The space is huge (nearly 1.5 acres each for big AND small dogs), so there is plenty of room to play. So much to do in the park and in the area. We will definitely be back. We camped at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park in a Motorhome.

Hilltop RV Park, Fort Stockton, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

Price reflects a 10% cash discount. Simple but dusty park full of mostly long-term workers. A few pull-through sites are kept for overnighters like us, but so few as to sell out seemingly every night so call to reserve if interested. While I-10 is very close, you can also hear it all night long. Pool looked nice, but closed for the winter season. Doggie area was a nice touch as well. Park staff were friendly on the phone and during check-in. We did not have to disconnect our tow. Wi-Fi was so slow as to be unusable even for just checking email. We will most likely not return. We camped at Hilltop RV Park in a Motorhome.

City of Rocks State Park, Faywood, New Mexico

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Great find off the beaten path! About 30 minutes north of Deming, but totally worth the drive. The road to the park is completely paved and the interior roads are dirt and mostly (mostly) passable. For those wondering, there are 2 reservable electric/water sites (E-7 and E-8). E-7 is a bit narrow, so E-8 is preferable. There are 10 total electric sites all in the same area, so the rest are first come/first served. E-1 through E-4 are back ins while E-5 through E-10 are pull throughs. Every site has a covered patio table and trash can. They were all full when we stayed. The Pegasus North sites (15-19) are all boondocking, but also reservable. Site 15 is quite unlevel, but the rest are very level and can accommodate any size rig (18 is *gigantic*). The road to Pegasus North is passable, just drive slowly if you have a big(ger) rig. The rest of the sites in the park are also first come/first served and vary in size and grade from small to large and level to quite unlevel. Choose carefully before paying the iron ranger. The darkness is hard to describe, unfortunately the cloud cover didn't allow for stargazing....but it must be amazing. We'll be back for sure... We camped at City of Rocks State Park in a Motorhome.

Tucson / Lazydays KOA, Tucson, Arizona

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $46.00
Overall Rating:

This park is worthy of the "Resort" designation. All the amenities, easy in/out for big rigs, and a wide variety of sites for all desires and budgets. Price listed reflects 10% KOA discount. Some train noise can be heard overnight in the distance. However, park is very safe as it's completely walled/fenced in and there is on-site security manning the entry gate after dark. We will definitely be back. We camped at Tucson / Lazydays KOA in a Motorhome.

The Canyon Motel & RV Park, Williams, Arizona

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

As the other reviews mention, this park has a lot of rules. However....the reason for the rules is clearly posted on the documentation (foreign visitors who are first-timers in a USA RV park). None of the rules seem unreasonable either. Park is dirt and gravel, which makes for a dusty stay. Many of the sites are sloped to the patio side, which makes sitting outside either uncomfortable or impossible. These sites need to be graded properly and posts/framing installed to make them truly level and terraced (as some already are...) The most level sites are the pull-throughs up front (Sites 0-5) and the sites on the west perimeter (6-14). The rest are hit and miss for being level. Not a deal-breaker in our view, but be aware. Staff are friendly and escort you to your site. I didn't care much for the actual parking guidance but that may be helpful to others. Location is easy access to/from I-40 and only minimal noise from trains at night. We will be back. We camped at The Canyon Motel & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Ouray RV Park & Cabins, Ouray, Colorado

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $55.00
Overall Rating:

Great location and amazing views from all around the park. Our site backed up to the river, but was a bit narrow when the neighbor showed up. There are wider riverfront sites which would be our preference for next time. Staff are extremely helpful and are genuinely interested in making sure you have a good time and your stay is fun. I was amazed that no matter the time you arrive, someone from the staff will come to greet you and show you to your site. Parking assistance is available should you need/want it. The onsite cafe is great and the city's hot springs pool complex is a short riverfront walk away. I only wish the park were a bit more than just gravel. There are a few trees on south side of the park. However, the rest is open and all gravel. Upside is that maneuvering is easy, even for the largest of rigs. We will definitely come back. We camped at Ouray RV Park & Cabins in a Motorhome.

Winding River RV Resort, Grand Lake, Colorado

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $51.00
Overall Rating:

Outstanding resort! Located just outside the west entrance to RMNP, this location provides beautiful vistas, fun days, and quiet nights. Staff were extremely helpful at all times and constantly work to maintain the park's pristine condition. As mentioned earlier, there are 3 distinct sections to the park. Up "front", there are more secluded sites that are laid out similar to a county park. These sites vary from FHU, partial hook-up and primitive. In the center, there are equestrian sites with horse corrals. These are partial hook-up, but staff indicated they are looking at the possibility of adding sewer as well. In the "back" are the sites described in a prior review as "KOA" style. Well, I've never been to a KOA that had views like this one! All these sites are FHU and offer great views in every direction. The horses in the corrals at back are friendly and fun to watch. Nights are quiet in back as well. Overall, there are sites to fit everyone's needs and wants. All access roads are easy to navigate, even with the largest of rigs. Horseback and ATV riding are available on site as well. The resort also offers hayrides, an ice cream social, and full pancake breakfast once a week....all for reasonable prices. We will definitely be back and have already made reservations for next year. We camped at Winding River RV Resort in a Motorhome.

ACT Campground & Environmental Learning Center, Moab, Utah

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Very dusty and tight campground with many unlevel sites. The interior roads are easy to navigate, but the sites need work. The crown in the center of some sites also makes parking and leveling difficult. We were careful to advise staff about our requirements for our large (43') rig and were told, "No problem." Staff were very accomodating upon arrival, even late at night, in helping us move to a site that would at least barely fit our rig. The original site we were assigned would not work due to the excessive crown in the center. The next problem was the unlevel nature of the second site. Some blocks, manual leveling, and a portable stair step resolved that issue. There is not much room to sit outside your site or let your dog do their business. Many of the sites also have broken down wooden picnic benches. Some have new(er) looking aluminum benches. The dog and bicycle wash are great. The community kitchen and eating area are nice for those interested in such things. Staff assured that they were working on the crown and leveling issues as well as the overall condition of the campground. Evidence of construction is all over the place as well. I presume with the busy season starting that won't happen anytime soon. We won't return. We camped at ACT Campground & Environmental Learning Center in a Motorhome.

Coachlight Inn & RV Park, Las Cruces, New Mexico

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

Dusty park next to motel. Nearly empty at the time we stayed. Friendly check-in staff, but patience is required. Sites are wide and access roads are easy to navigate. Location is just off freeway. If your motorhome is shorter than 40', you can probably get away without disconnecting. Otherwise, plan to disconnect your tow vehicle. For fifth wheel, only the shortest could avoid disconnecting. However, sites are wide enough so you can park next to your RV. Biggest concerns were sewer connections above curb level, water connection very close to the ground, and stray dogs wandering throughout park (don't leave your shoes outside or they may disappear). Highway noise was minimal. Price reflects Passport America. City tax brings total nightly rate to just under $25. Not a destination type of park, but decent for an overnight stay. Given no other option, we would return. We camped at Coachlight Inn & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Copper Mountain RV Park, Tacna, Arizona

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

Expansive park with lots of room to maneuver. Some road noise and the occasional passing train (no horns, just a low hum). The excellent on-site manager, was very diligent in making sure we were satisfied with our stay, even though we were only 1 of 5 guests in the park at that time (it was a hot weekend). Most sites are terraced back-in with your neighbor (if any) behind you. There are 13 sites along the North wall (closer to I-8) that allow pull-throughs. We were able to park our 43' MH and towed vehicle without disconnecting. I did have to use our 50A extension cord since the pedestals all seem to be spaced towards the front of all the sites. No big deal. Young trees do not yet provide much of any shade. The frequent wind causes problems for awnings. Price reflects Passport America discount. We will definitely stay again when passing through. We camped at Copper Mountain RV Park in a Motorhome.

Desert Willow RV Park, Van Horn, Texas

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $13.00
Overall Rating:

Rate listed is PA. Very simple gravel and dirt park with some trees. Main park has longer pull-throughs on the south side. Across the street on east side of the main park is a larger open dirt area with FHU that is very flat. With our 43' MH and towed vehicle, we elected to use this area rather than navigate the main park turn-ins and trees. Did not have to unhook at all. Road noise from I-10 is minimal, but be prepared for the freight trains that pass nearby all night long. They blow their horns when passing through and it can be quite loud. Great simple park for an overnight stay. Reliable 50A power. Will use again if passing through area. We camped at Desert Willow RV Park in a Motorhome.

Angels Camp RV & Camping Resort, Angels Camp, California

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

Great park. Advertised as having level pull-thru sites, but it seems we were assigned the only non-level pull-thru site which created leveling problems for our 40'+ MH. The site was sloped excessively side to side, which also made for uncomfortable seating outside. Not worth moving as we were only there a few days. Sites are terraced and separated from each other usually by vegetation. Facility was very clean and well maintained. We stayed on the "back side" of the park and except for the one night music festival at the nearby fairgrounds (all over by 10pm), nights were very peaceful. We'll be back again. Laguna Seca Recreation Area, Salinas, California

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

We have stayed here before with a 36' 5th wheel, but this was our first time in our 43' tag axle MH. The entry road is steep but perfectly possible to navigate. The roads in the campground loops are more difficult to navigate. There are lots of trees that are now overgrown and need trimming, the roadways are narrow, and there are numerous obstacles and drop-offs waiting for you if you don't pay attention. Many of the sites that are reasonably accessible for a 40'+ Class A are not level. I had to level manually and leave the coach slightly rear-down to prevent the rear tires from being lifted off the ground (a big safety no-no because of the parking brake) Apparently there is now a problem with the old water pipes in the campground, causing the arsenic levels to exceed the federal standard for potable water. Between the overgrown trees, narrow roads, and now non-potable water, we won't be back. It's too bad because it's really quiet here at night and the starry skies are beautiful. We camped at Laguna Seca Recreation Area in a Motorhome.
