Walnut Hills Campground (formerly Staunton / Walnut Hills KOA), Staunton, Virginia

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

We really liked this CG. It is extremely well maintained and so pleasant to walk around. There are the usual amenities. The sites are varied so pay attention to where you reserve. The sites down by the lake are very closely spaced and there are 2 rows across a thin road - it feels like a little town with kids riding their bikes and everyone visiting. We had site 108 which we liked because it was away from all the activity and had a picnic table/patio behind the rv in the woods. The wi-fi did not work at all and the cable was fuzzy. Other hook-ups were fine. There are plenty of places to stroll. This CG is convenient to both I-81 and I-64 (I think). We camped at Walnut Hills Campground (formerly Staunton / Walnut Hills KOA) in a Motorhome.

Warriors Path State Park, Kingsport, Tennessee

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is a nice park if you like outdoor activities. There is a huge lake, many roads and paths, play areas for kids, etc. The maintenance is adequate but not great - like many state facilities, I'm sure they don't get enough funding or staff to keep things pristine but it was ok. The site spacing is very generous. Very convenient from the interstate, too. We camped at Warriors Path State Park in a Motorhome.

Austin East KOA Holiday, Austin, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

This is a fairly new CG that is thoughtfully designed and perfectly kept. The staff is friendly and helpful and there is always someone around. It is 20-25 min to downtown Austin which may seem distant, but it's really not bad and there are no nice CGs closer in. The CG offers a lovely pool and play area although we did not see many kids. All the sites seem spacious and there are oversized sites with grills and firepits and pretty nice furniture. We did not use the bathhouse but we did look at it, and it was very clean. The laundry was great. All in all this is one of the best KOAs we have ever visited. There is an adequate amount of green space for dog walking and a large dog park. We camped at Austin East KOA Holiday in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There are some fantastic state parks in Texas. Our favorite was Pedernales, which is in the hill country. McKinney Falls, which is convenient from this CG, is pretty and has nice walks. Even in-town Zilker Park has good green space. If you like healthy food, try Vinagrette in Austin, just off S. Congress. They specialize in amazing sandwiches and salads. I am still regretting the carrot cake that I didn't have time to eat.

Frog City RV Park, Duson, Louisiana

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

This is a fine CG for an overnight stay. It is just off I-10 and there is a little road noise but not bad, and it is very convenient. This small CG is beautifully maintained, very clean and the grass is mowed. It does not have a lot to offer unless you are visiting the area - there is a pool and a small (but nice) playground. The people who work at the CG are helpful and friendly with the exception of the check-in person. We camped at Frog City RV Park in a Motorhome.

Peach Country RV Park, Stonewall, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

Peach County is a fine CG if you are in the area to try the wineries (dozens of them) or see the LBJ sights. It is well-maintained. The interior roads are dirt/gravel and so are the sites but everything is level and well-planned. There is some shade but the trees are not big. There are on-site manager/campers who are very nice. FHUs work and the wi-fi is actually good. There is little or no tv reception and no cable. Not a charming CG but well-located and fine for a visit. We camped at Peach Country RV Park in a Motorhome.

Cedar Grove Park RV Resort, Baytown, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

This rv park is really more of a permanent home for workers in the area. The CG itself is new and immaculate. It is completely fenced and very secure, and all of the interior roads and pads are brand-new concrete. Most of the rvs are large fifth wheels. There are a few families (from what I could tell walking around) but most "campers" are guys. The trees are only about 2 feet tall because they were just planted, and it will be very hot here in the summer. It was cold during our stay so the lack of shade was no problem. The people who work here (owners?) are very helpful and nice. This was a fine CG for an overnight stay; it is close to the interstate but not too close and all the full hook-ups worked. Wi-fi works but is slow. Personally I prefer campgrounds with a little charm, large trees, etc. but Cedar Grove suits the use of the people who live here. We camped at Cedar Grove Park RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Montgomery South RV Park, Hope Hull, Alabama

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

There is nothing wrong with this CG except the kind of CG it is - a big field next to the interstate with no shade. The hook-ups work fine (even the wi-fi, which almost never works at campgrounds). The guy who owns it is incredibly pleasant and helpful. But it's not charming. There is no reason to stay here other than if you need a CG for the night. We camped at Montgomery South RV Park in a Motorhome.

Chattanooga North / Cleveland KOA, Cleveland, Tennessee

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This is a better-than-usual KOA. It is conveniently close to the interstate but not noisy. It has the usual choices of hook-ups and sites. Unlike some of the previous reviews, I didn't find the interior roads too bad - they were gravel and in good condition. Also, we had no trouble getting level in our gravel site. Driving around the CG is confusing because all the roads are one-way and curvy, but they bring you to your site. Sites are close together but not too close for comfort. The office people are extremely nice and helpful. There is a very well-stocked camp store. We would happily stay at this KOA again. We camped at Chattanooga North / Cleveland KOA in a Motorhome.

Hungry Mother State Park, Marion, Virginia

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Hungry Mother is a wonderful state park with many recreational opportunities - hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, cycling, etc. We stayed at Burson campground, which is a mile before the main part of the park. It is a large, flat CG with a variety of hook-ups and 2 yurts. We found it very comfortable, with friendly rangers and camp hosts. The CG itself is not very interesting but the location is ideal for exploring the area. There are a couple of other CGs in Hungry Mother but we were told that Burson is better for larger RVs. The cost is discounted if you are a Virginia resident. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

Twin Grove RV Resort & Cottages, Pine Grove, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

We only stayed one night at this CG so did not really explore it very well. Easy on and off the interstate (5 miles). Large CG with a variety of different sites - some back-in, some pull-thru, some full hook-up and some not, etc. Lots of seasonal sites. Very well kept and maintained. Lots of amenities, especially for kids - large pool with slides, dog parks, restaurant, even an arcade! (I think some of this is only open in the summer.) Plenty of room to walk your dog. We would definitely stay here on a future trip. We camped at Twin Grove RV Resort & Cottages in a Motorhome.

Candy Hill Campground, Winchester, Virginia

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

We have stayed at Candy Hill many times but this may be the last. Every time we stay here the park is a bit shabbier and the road a bit noisier. Candy Hill is very convenient from I-81 which must partly account for the fact that there are always lots of RVs here. (Short-term, long-term, and storage which really looks terrible.) The people who check you in are rude although the maintenance guys are nice. They charge an extra $10 if you want a premium site which has a grill and some cheap patio furniture. The large grassy areas which used to be immaculate are now ragged and weedy. The hook-ups work fine but the wi-fi is poor and the cable tv is terrible (it works but has few channels and the picture quality is poor). Really what used to be a pretty good rv campground is now a mediocre rv cg and they overcharge, IMHO. We camped at Candy Hill Campground in a Motorhome.

Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground, Swannanoa, North Carolina

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $54.00
Overall Rating:

Mama Gertie's is a fantastic campground. It is in a fairly convenient location just off I-40 near Asheville and you can easily get to a huge number of attractions in less than an hour. (Asheville is less than 15 minutes.) It is built on a sloping mountainside property and at the very top there are premium sites with decks and amazing views. The regular sites lack the views but the CG itself is immaculate, attractive, and perfectly maintained. Even the washing machines in the laundry are new. The sites are level gravel and all the interior roads are paved. There are full hook-up sites and some E/W only. There are tent sites and cabins in their own little area and these do not seem to be as popular as the main CG. This is not a huge CG but there are enough different areas to be ok for walking dogs (and of course there are thousands of parks and trails nearby). Mama Gerties is not the kind of CG where there are a lot of kids - instead we saw a lot of older people with pets and upscale motorhomes. The landscaping is exceptional - lots of trees and birds and two different streams running through the property. Very enjoyable stay! We camped at Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Less than 5 minutes away (in Swannona) is an excellent restaurant/bar called Native with a creative menu. There are also excellent dining options in Black Mountain which is slightly closer than Asheville and much easier to park.

R Shaefer Heard COE, West Point, Georgia

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is a huge COE campground. There are several camping loops and they have a different look depending on whether they are in the woods or on the water. There are no full hook-up sites but I think every site has electricity and water. The lake is beautiful and the mornings are full of birdsong. My only complaint was that we had accidentally chosen a site in the midst of a large family get-together and there were a dozen young kids running around having a great noisy time. We would have been happier in one of the more isolated sites. This CG is great for walks, jogging, dog-walking, and water activities like fishing and kayaking. It is very clean and well-maintained. We camped at R Shaefer Heard COE in a Motorhome.

Sarasota Lakes RV Resort , Sarasota, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

This is not really an rv park. It is more of a park model community with a few rv spaces to rent. It is incredibly clean and has many amenities, such as a heated pool, shuffleboard, movie night, tennis, coffee & donuts, etc. It is right next to the airport and you do hear plenty of planes taking off and landing. The people who live here (mostly for the winter) love the place and are very friendly. We were here for a week to visit friends who live nearby and it was ideal. The cable hook-ups are weird but there are plenty of regular channels. We camped at Sarasota Lakes RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Ringling museums and house are very close, about a mile and a half away. There are 2 circus museums, an art museum, a performing arts space, and the former house itself which is worth touring. (look at the view from the porch even if you don't tour the house) The restaurant at the Ringling, called Muse, is excellent.

Triple C's Campground & RV Park, Chattahoochee, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This is a very minimal rv park. It is located about 2 easy miles from I-10, so it is very convenient and yet far enough away not to hear the highway. It is small and has lots of trees, a pool, and a dog park. I think there might have been a kids' playground too. The interior roads are poor. The sites are not completely level but are good enough. The people who work here are helpful and pleasant. OK for an overnight stop. We camped at Triple C's Campground & RV Park in a Motorhome.
